They needed to make it into the serum. Just his blood without the other chemicals in the serum wouldn't have worked also it needs to be injected and he wouldn't have had a needle.

Uhm, actually, Newt has some of Thomas’s blood. In film Newt during his "fight" with Thomas made like, a cut with his knife. So there was Thomas’s blood on knife, which Newt successfully pierced into himself. So we still have chances to see Newt alive and happy with Thomas :)
