Guys, this is a BuzzFeed video, what did you expect? ... and to be honest, Trader's Joe Asian food is just ok, not top stuff, but clearly not among the worsts.
I noticed that in many different channels reaction videos. There are rarely pairs where one likes things and the other doesn't. If someone says they think something is bad the other always agrees with them.
The girl girl duo is a more realistic representation of how asians feel about trader Ming's food. Like it's good college Asian food. The Michelle girl seemed like she was trying hard. She didn't even know what nori is in the Japanese fried rice
Michelle & Stanley grew up in areas with a large Asian population - they had easy availability of good Asian food. She isn't trying too hard, she has standards. If somebody went to college in Japan, Taiwan, or HK then this stuff would be cr@p too - even their 7-11's would kick TJ's @$$. Now if you're like me, spending most their life in cities without many Asians then it's fine.
@@christineteng980 Even Asia is the largest continent, Asians share most of their culture with each other for a long gone centuries so being entirely uncultured hog isnt an excuse. ...but nori is one of the most popular and stereotypical Asian food, eh.
So. I'm Asian. Vietnamese American. Personally, I actually really like a lot of Trader Joe's Asian products and I feel like maybe these items weren't described well enough/cooked as well as they could've been. Firstly, Michelle was judging the JAPANESE fried rice as if it a Chinese one. Idk if they were told what they were eating, but it's a pretty important thing to do, in my opinion, if you're going to do a taste test and compare it to authentic products. There was edamame and nori in it, and for goodness sake, not all fried rice is the same. Vietnamese fried rice is different from Chinese fried rice. Japanese fried rice is as well. Every culture has its own variation. Secondly, homeboy needs to make his own opinion instead of waiting for her to answer and then just nodding and agreeing. At least, that what it looked like to me. Not trying to be rude, it just seemed like he was just echoing what she was saying and looking for a reaction from her first before responding. Thirdly, I've tried all the products they've had (and more). Best results are to wrap the baos in a damp paper towel and microwave to achieve the fluffy texture they were talking about. Fry the orange chicken a little hard to get some crunchy bits. Also, try the Chicken Soup Dumplings and Thai Tea Mochi. They're not half bad. Great price and very easy and quick to make. Not super authentic but will satisfy cravings.
Fried rice is something you shouldn't be buying, it should be something you make yourself. All my life I've never really met anyone who really likes the same fried rice, they kinda like their own things in it whether it be ingredients or texture of the rice.
She represents the majority of self proclaimed foodies. If she was truly an expert she'd know that real Chinese fried rice has no peas or carrots in it.
We all need to agree that these are American Asian dishes. When you go to Panda Express do they claim to be authentic Chinese food? No they proudly announcing their food as American Chinese. You can’t compare apples and oranges. Like Taco Bell. It isn’t Mexican food.
How were they snobs? They literally their honest opinion about it and even said the last item was good. If anything it's the 2 girls that are. One of those girls loved everything and clearly swayed the opinion of the Indian girl. No honest opinion there, just "oh I ate these throughout college so im gonna love them no matter what".
Jenny and Jasmine are like a breath of fresh air. They’re pretty open minded unlike the other two... pretty stuck up for someone who also eats westernized Asian food ie Panda Express
We all already know their Indian food is good already anyway. Let's be real here, there's a good chance Trader Joes picked what they would eat, they were probably trying to promote their less popular options to even out sales more. Also even if it's not exactly correct a lot of the time people are speaking of Southeast Asia when they say "Asia" because a lot of people don't know the names of all of those smaller countries... Everyone knows the names of India and Russia so think of them on their own. We're not taking anything away from non SE-Asian Asians by specifying separately. We all still love you. Content creators could definitely do a lot to improve their label useage to keep things clear though
I love Trader's Joe. Practically I do my groceries there. I mean c'mon, you know it's not practially authentically Asian cuisines they serve, but whoever premade put the meals together, I got to admit it tastes good and healthy.
I think I would go with the two girls’ opinions. What they said are so relatable to me, as a Taiwanese student. I basically get bao and fried rice like those at my campus cafeteria.
I was hoping they’d try the pork potstickers, I’ve been eating them so much and they’re amazing to me but I’m American and I’d like to know how authenticity they rate
As a Chinese-American who lives in a city without good Chinese dumplings but has had decent ones in their life - For frozen ones they really aren't bad. The meat lacks some flavor that you'd get in a good Chinese restaurant, but that's true of even the Asian frozen brands. As far as the wrapper, that is entirely a matter of taste. Chinese pot stickers have thicker skins, which I feel give a better meat/starch balance. So from that perspective it isn't good - but no Japanese gyoza are. The Japanese prefer a thinner won ton style skin. The other benefit of a thicker skin is that you can get good browning and a nice crust, giving flavor and a texture difference. But again, this is how most frozen brands are. So compared to authentic fresh ones, C or C-. Compared to frozen Asian brands, a solid B/B+.
Wait sorry I'm not American so it's the first time hearing trader Joe's. Is it like a 711 but Asian version that's just easily accessible with like express style food? :O it seems like it's pretty popular
I don't because I have had those dishes and they are good. No not restaurant quality but for something you can make on a weeknight in twenty minutes and not have to deal with a pile of dishes they are pretty good.
I just learned that Trader Joe's sells different Asian foods. I loved the great unbiased job done by the boys and girls in this video. I will certainly try Asian foods at Trader Joe's going forwards.

We make the orange chicken from TJ for a quick dinner and it doesn’t look like that. I feel like they skimped on the sauce and maybe microwaved it. I like it with some chopped green onions on top.

Microwaved bread is microwaved bread. Bao tastes fine but yeah it's going to be tough and chewy. You could steam them if you don't mind taking a lot more time but...…...
From the videos I've watched on Battle Trip that went to the PH, Koreans tend to like the flavors of Filipino cooking... So it makes me believe that is why the two girls tended to agree with each other
Okay listen for grocery store frozen foods these are damn good... it’s not what you’ll get in a restaurant. The girl duo is not overly critical and I also think they’re more realistic
I like how after this one, BuzzFeed decided to do the rest on a country basis rather than like "Europeans try TJs European food." Though the Italian one seems like Italians can more easily get away with being snobby about food.
I’m a college student and I would say I’m not a fan of Asian Trader Joe’s food. Except for the orange chicken cause it’s so cheap and it tastes good if you cook it right.
It's kind of weird to see people use sticks as utensils in the current year. Forks and spoons have been a thing for a long time and they're far better for eating.
The boa bun should have been microwave with a wet paper towel. Bun would have came out nice and soft. Not hard like in the video. But those buns are pretty good and I usually get them when I go to Trader Joes.
As an Asian, I can’t claim knowing all kinds of Asian food, they are way too diverse. Asia is huge! It’s like asking a guy from Indiana judging Texan food only because he is an American.
