  • LEBANON: "The escalation is progressing!" Expert reveals! This would be the horror scenario in the Middle East
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is escalating and putting the pro-Iranian militia under increasing pressure. While Israel reported nightly air strikes on the militia's "terrorist infrastructure" on Thursday, Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad put the number of people killed by exploding Hezbollah communications equipment at 37, and at least 2,931 people were injured in the explosions on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Abiad. The Foreign Office "urgently" called on German citizens to leave the country.
Hundreds of walkie-talkie radios exploded in Lebanon on Wednesday, after hundreds of radio receivers, so-called pagers, belonging to Hezbollah members exploded the day before. According to Health Minister Abiad, 12 people were killed in the first wave of explosions, and 25 people died in the second wave on Wednesday. At least 20 of them are said to be Hezbollah members. The Shiite militia blames Israel and threatens retaliation.
Israel has not yet commented on the explosions. On Wednesday, however, Defense Minister Joav Gallant said that for Israel, the focus of the war was shifting northward - towards Lebanon. Israel is at the beginning of a new phase of the war, Gallant stressed.
On Thursday night, the Israeli army said it attacked several targets in southern Lebanon from the air in order to destroy Hezbollah's "terrorist infrastructure" and a weapons depot. The armed forces also announced that two drones from Lebanon entered Israeli territory on Thursday and crashed. No one was injured, but the drones started a fire that Israeli firefighters put out.
The Foreign Office expressed concern on Thursday and renewed its travel warning for Lebanon. Further security-related incidents cannot be ruled out following the "large number of small explosions of communication devices in various parts of the country". These could "also pose a significant danger to bystanders", it said.
"There are also increasing signs of a possible further deterioration of the situation and expansion of the conflict," the Foreign Office continued. A further escalation could also lead to the closure of Beirut airport due to the associated threat to civil air traffic.
Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on the conflicting parties to exercise restraint in the online service X. "I warn all sides against further escalation," she warned. Strike and counterstrike would not bring the region "one millimeter" closer to peace.
Turkey accused Israel of wanting to expand the war in the Gaza Strip to Lebanon. "We have reached a point where these Israeli operations are becoming more and more provocative," said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Turkish state broadcaster TRT. "And in return, Iran, Hezbollah and elements close to them have no choice but to react," he added. Turkey is a staunch critic of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip in the war with Hamas, which the radical Islamic Palestinian organization triggered with an unprecedented major attack on Israel on October 7 last year.
Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on the United Nations to oppose Israel's "technological war" against his country. He called on the UN Security Council to "take a firm stance" on this issue. The body will meet for an emergency session on Friday.
