      I think it is "How many times are you planning to survive the roll" vs "How many times are you planning on rolling". I think he plans to roll all the way down. Unless Matt pulls the banana in the way to stop him!

      There's a lot of weight in the drivetrain so if it lands upside-down it won't crush. Worst case survival.

      @@jakep5121 I have no doubt that you're correct about that, and most of this cage does serve a genuine purpose in a worst case scenario. but things like those 2 extra angles behind the front seats and a lot of what's on the roof are superfluous. I would say redundancy is the only purpose for a lot of them.

  • @ljoffe

    The cage looks awesome. You have to include a bar behind the front seats that goes from behind drivers head to behind passenger seat. Then a bar straight across between the B pillar bars. You can also do a complete X behind the front seats. These bars will stop the cage from collapsing if rolled over. Look at any race car and you will see what I am talking about.

  • @j1m3by
    @j1m3by 3 роки тому +1

    My only cage building experience is for race cars so I guess you're doing it right for a rock truck. I watched both you and Matt end your cage half way down the B pillar in front and on top of the wheel wells on the back. With all that effort to build in triangulation and stuff, why do you not tie the cage tubes into the frame?

    • @alyssadavison752
      @alyssadavison752 3 роки тому

      Two schools of thought for recreational wheeling rigs. You already know the benefits of running the cage to frame stand offs. And the increased noise and vibration solid mounting the body to do that causes. Sandwiching the floorboard with big hunks of plate is adequate for most low speed rollovers a wheeling rig would see, but you don’t get the negatives of a frame mounted cage. You’re building the body into a self contained unit, that in theory would hold up to a roll over even if the body separated from the chassis. Low speed rock crawlers don’t need nearly the strength that a nascar cage or a ultra4 4400 car would need. I do see a lot of unnecessary tubing used in this cage, and would much rather see x bracing being used in all the large spans instead of the corner gussets. It will fold up if impacted on one of the long straight spans, such as the c pillar, but for their intended usage it should hold up fine. It will crush, but only so far before it stops. And it only needs to work once.

      I roughly calculated the added weight from the estimated lengths of the tubing in the roll cage. I won’t disclose it so as not to embarrass myself; but, Papa Dar better not be planning on taking that beastie out into the sand here in Utah. (Yes, I am a native) He will sink like a rock tossed into quicksand. The more he fights against it and the faster his wheels spin the quicker he will sink. As a rock crawler he would be advised to add several hundred pounds of lead to the bottom half of his Jeep to redefine and to relocate the centroid of his Jeep so he DOESN’T roll over. LOOKS GOOD, though.

Clever people working with metal to me Is an art form, I done stuff making things from Hi Tech metals and alloys for years, it was my job, I enjoyed it, but I too come from motor sport on the Ovals so made things that worked well also/ well retired from both, but, just love watching you work making art forms Into functionality (ohh thats a big word)..
