My family in Texas has pecan farms. My Grandfather was what you would call a “gentleman farmer” but some of his family caught the “bug” and now are actual farmers. My grandmother use to climb the trees and jump up and down to shake the pecans down! She did that until her late 70’s when she fell out of the tree and broke her hip. My grandfather had to take her to the emergency room and the Dr told him in no certain terms that she would no longer be climbing trees!

My grandfather had a smaller shaker that he had built that he used on his own trees(he had 3- he always invented created his own things) and shook them down onto a tarp and we’d collect them up. He had a hand crank shelled that would crack and remove most of shell and we would go through and clean them up in evenings while watching tv. Then they went in freezer (or bellies) for grandma and family to bake with. Miss those days. No pecans trees now. That land is long been sold but the memories last me forever.

in Australia, we have moved on from shaking to the ground then coming back with either a vacuum collector or a sweep collector. we now use a shaker that has what is like an upside-down umbrella that surrounds the base of the tree prior to shaking, this is then fed into a hopper.
good luck in this new venture with Carl and his family.

Hi guys Kaz from Scotland you should tell your friend the dried out husks can be used in fish and shrimp tanks they have tannins in them once soaked and put in the tank they leave a brown tinge to the water, its called Blackwater tank, for shrimp and fish that live in brackish water, as long as they are not sprayed with any chemicals. That could be another way of selling the dried out husks I buy what they call botanicals all the time for my shrimp tanks.
Hope all of you are good 😊x

This is fantastic. I love the idea of being able to order direct from the farm. A lot of the produce that you buy at the retail stores have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere, sometimes for months. I did security a few times, for a food manufacturer that would have their building tinted and sprayed for pest, (spray that would kill a person if they walked into the building while it was tinted) while they had food products in the building. And I'm sorry you can't convince me, that some of that spray doesn't leech into the food.

Our Lions Club works with a pecan grower in our state to offer the freshly harvested pecans, every fall. It's been a great fund-raiser for our club for our service projects. The grower sets the price and we add a little bit onto it which is our profit. They also let us know how many cases we have to order to get free shipping. For example, this year, it's 30 cases. We adverse that they are Georgia Grown and this year's harvest. We take preorders. This year, since we have so many who ask if we have more for sale after we make the deliveries when they come in that we're ordering a few extra cases. Other Lions Clubs in Georgia do the same, as well as ones that sell Vidalia Onions (also grown in Georgia). It's a win-win for the farmer and for us plus it funds eye exams and eyeglasses for those that cannot otherwise afford it.

Spicy/hot pecans, candied, cinnamon hint of coffee spicied. We have 3-4 huge pecan trees probably 50-60 years old in our yard my mom planted not long after they built our house on 1958! Dad would walk the yard with a handheld nut picker and get his exercise. But nothing beats a fresh picked pecan. Mmmmm. The cold brew pecan infused coffee sounds good, especially if you make a mocha flavored one too…love iced mocha coffee from Jack’s Hamburgers, a fast food restaurant here in Alabama, Tennessee etc.

In this day and age, people don’t want to go to a person’s home the way they used to. We recognized that as we created a way to sell farm fresh eggs to the public without creating events, or hiring employees. We built an egg hut at the end of our driveway were people can purchase eggs at their leisure. Our egg hut is equipped with a refrigerator to keep the eggs fresh, since we are in Texas. It has a drop box for purchase and has a security camera inside so we can verify payment, as well as how many cartons purchased. We know how many are in the egg hut, so when it is sold out, we close it.
We have a pipe entry with an automatic gate where we’ve installed an additional camera that records license plate, vehicle description, and activity. In four years since we built it, we’ve only had one that didn’t pay. After posting his photo on our local community FB page, he was back at our driveway and left the money in the drop box with an apology.
If you’d like to see photos to give this farmer an idea of what he could build without having to babysit it, please let me know.

His machine couldn’t shake my pecan trees. Most are hitting 75 years. I can’t believe they survived hurricane Ida now the drought 🤷🏼‍♀️. Hopefully we’ll have a harvest time will tell if not I’ll definitely be buying from your friend

I would like to put my order in right now for 2- 5lb bags. One to be shipped here, to Voorheesville, NY and the second bag to be shipped to Grove, Oklahoma. With each order I would like an XXL hoodie sweatshirt, with your "Arms Family Homestead" on the front and "Do your Best" on the back!

I know I've said it before, but you two are just so cute together!! ❤😂😊 I've had fresh Georgia pecans one time in my life. But I've never eaten any fresh Oklahoma pecans! I sure would love to try them, they look so good!! ❤

I used to live in Ponca city OKlahoma in a tiny shot gun house. The next door vacant home had a gigantic pecan tree that hung over my yard too. One year it rained pecans for a month. Just by picking them off the ground filled a big blue tote about 3/4 full. I never weighed it but it was at least 20 lbs. I should of sold them on the corner but I ate most of them and gave some away.

My brother has my Mums property has a pecan tree and it is a massive tree and it didn’t fruit for 21 years the cockatoos love eating them, I have one in my yard and it has been there 20 years and hasn’t fruited yet. Mine and my mums old tree are the hard shell . We used to get buckets full off mums even after the birds had raided. My mum used to give them some other times of the year. My brother still does.

@Arms Family Homestead, what a smart business decision and move! Waiting for the word.. Go! Now, you mentioned maybe Chocolate Covered Pecans, forget that.. Bourbon Balls are HUGE sellers during the Holidays. How to make that happen I really don’t know. My daughter and I have made Bourbon Balls for the Holidays for years and they’re always gone before the Holiday season is over. They make awesome gifts. Just a suggestion to think about. Congratulations on your new business venture. God Bless! ✝️🙏🏻🇺🇸🥰

Where i lived in Cali they grew walnuts, just a small walnut field, they paid my kids $1.00 a bucket to pick them up and of course they did it…they got all excited when they finished and then they would call in the tree shakers and my sons would say…MOM…lol was so funny then they had to start over.

Our church sells one pound bags of pecans and I have purchased 6 pounds. So hopefully we will have enough for the holiday season. If we run out, I know where I can get some more.

You don’t have to sell me on it. Pecan pies have become few and far between since our access to fresh pecans has dwindled through the years. Used to be my favorite, but not so much now. Never realized could be the store bought pecans aren’t as good.
But I want some of that pecan infused cold brew too! Love it!

My grandparents used to have a couple walnut trees. When it came time to harvest, they would put down tarps under the trees. These tarps would catch all the walnuts that fell so they would be easier to gather and not have to pick between the fall leaves and grass. When I saw the tree shaker, i immediately thought about it.

Growing up in East Texas. There is a pecan orchard not far from me that my mom and I would go to and get fresh pecans. They are amazing! The place is still there but they no longer sale the pecans. It's sad.
