I am a narrator for acx. And have completed 5 books. PLEASE, do your research before jumping into this it can take 100+ hours to complete one book due to the time it takes to record, re record and edit. Not only that but you have to make sure you have absolute silence and decent equipment. It's not as easy as you think, I made the mistake of thinking so. AND you can run into some shady people that decide they don't want to pay you for your time after completion. ALSO, if you do royalty share and your book isn't selling then you don't make money honey. Not saying it's impossible to do well here but it's not easy or fast money, and you will be sacrificing a lot of time, proceed with caution!!!

And the depression is creeping in. Sounds like you have a good insider’s view of all of this. So I guess ACX doesn’t guarantee payment? Entrei Nuer I just signed the contract. I have not yet done the job. It is going to be quite long. I recorded the audition using QuickTime audio recording and submitted it on the website. I will be talking about my process on my channel once I get going.

Ana Carolina Assis I used the built in microphone. But I ordered a professional microphone to use during the project. I used QuickTime to record.

Please let your subscribers know that your total voice over time is calculated at 2-3 real hours for every finished hours of work. 9 finished hours would take you 18 to 27 work hours. You would need to read the book, record your voice, edit, and fix any mistakes.
Suddenly voiceovers doesn't seem so hot anymore.
You also have to have a high quality recording software, a good mic, a recording space and know how to narrate and edit the entire project. It's not as easy as it sounds.

I've honestly never done a book that long to know the actual work time but I did mention that a nine hour book would take more than nine hours to account for mistakes and editing.

Getting a way to make income without having to leave home isn’t exactly as easy as you all think it is , talk is cheap and it’s sure easier said than done , I have my source , and I would rather stick to that, it pays well, even my stepdad quickly joined before it’s too late

I have read aloud to seniors in their homes, in senior facilities, to patients in hospitals, and to children (including teenagers). I have done this for a very long time and recently start searching about reading aloud and your youtube appeared. Thank you for the great inspiration. I am a senior now-but still reading aloud.
I love to read aloud to at the daycare. And I read the KJV bible a loud on the conference line.
I am a senior also 57. Do you remember our parents telling us to "not read out loud". Who knew that what we were doing "reading out loud" can earn us money now. Wow. my parents and teachers were wrong there. It was actually preparing us for our future!.

Tips in selecting royalty share projects:
1) Sales rank below 100,000 (the lower the number the better)
2) At least 30 CERTIFIED Amazon user reviews (certified means people who have actually bought the book)
3) Books 3 hours or less in length. If the book doesn't sell, you didn't invest too much time.
Thanks. How do you tell what the sales are? Do you only choose royalty share projects? If so, why?
@@thebrinksf69 @the brink You can check on your units sold at any time on ACX. The royalty share earnings show up at the end of each month. ACX also e-mails you a notification link to your previous month's earnings report. I've done both flat-rate and royalty share projects. I prefer flat-rate. It's been difficult for me to land flat-rate projects that pay more than $100 per finished hour.

Im definitely interested in doing this. I use to do over the phone customer service work and people would tell me i had a soothing voice, or would mistake me for the automated machine. 😆
My experience is very similar to yours. If you were getting that type of feedback IVR (on hold messaging) and audiobooks just may be your wheelhouse. I am 8 years into the profession now and I can't imagine life without it! Invest in your craft and clients will invest in your voice.

You demystify the process & knock down the excuses of those, who like me, may very well have the goods, but lack the chutzpah to toot their horn.
I just want to note that the example you gave said "royalty" OR "royalty plus" (whatever that means) OR "$200 - $400." Read carefully folks so you won't be unpleasantly surprised.

I just came across this, I haven't been on line much for the last year........I lost my job after 25 years (customer service mgr.) 2 mths later my husband got sick and is now disabled. My unemployment is now done and I am desperately looking for a job. I've already had to surrender my vehicle. You know a lot of people say, well just go out and get a job but it isn't as cut and dry as that. We have a 17 year old severely autistic son that needs to be taken care of 24-7. So now, it's 2 people I need to take care of. I would NEVER put them into a care facility, not as long as I have air in my lungs. What I am trying to say is THANK YOU for these videos. It gives me hope that I will be able to work from home and take care of my family but most of all keep our home. Again, thank you!

@@low-carbcrazy1336 ... yeah i can see how sound issues can be a problem. We live right next to a railroad, plus the county recycling center, plus noisy neighbors downstairs . No amount of insulation is going to block out all that.
I'll be looking around for a sound studio to rent occasionally.

I have always had comments on my phone voice, especially when I did surveys for radio stations over the phone. People thought I was an actual disc-jockey...so flattering! Anyway, thanks! Now's my chance to Branch out and do something different. I am 58 years old and ready for and easier job, one I would enjoy doing on a daily basis. Plus, I noticed you have a video helping those over 50 (like myself) who desire to work from home. Thanks Kat, Kudos to ya, Jim
You gave an estimate of time on a nine-hour book as needing an extra hour of work - 10 hours work in total. I do voice over work and the time spent is way longer than the time it takes to record. Unless someone else is doing all the editing and post-production then you have to do that. If your audio was perfect and needed no editing, that makes the time spent at least double the finished time, since you have to listen through, but recording, editing, and post-production; depending on how good you are and the complexity of the script could be three, four or even five times the finished time. The quality of the audio has to be perfect too - no hiss, pops or background sounds. Character voices have to be consistent throughout.

i also went to check it out they want u to complete all of the publishing as per their requirements. smh seems like a scam to get ppl to do a professional's work with a small pay not worth it at all.
I was thinking the same thing. I do transcriptions and it always takes way longer than the audio time, and I’m sure that much is true for this job as well!

Children's audiobooks may just be your calling. There are a plethora of facebook groups geared towards children's book authors. Get familiar in the space and you may find success before you know it due to many of the titles being under an hour to narrate.

I just wanted to add a positive comment here and say thank you for the recommendation. You've just delivered on exactly what you said you would: recommending ways to make money that are outside of the norm.
People with a limited mindset will say, "I can't do that. It's too time consuming. I have to spend too much money on recording equipment." etc. People with a growth mindset will look at this and say, "_How_ can I do this? I have more free hours now to figure this out. How can I make this happen at a low cost?"

And I think when the person has special, unique voice, they might even pay more. There was one woman at the airport announcing all the flights for many years until she got retired. All the travelers from all the world got crazy about her voice, some travelers asked the airport to see the lady face. The woman's voice is very nice and unique.

I think taking some responsibility here should be priority. I've seen a few videos of yours and I don't see where you give cons or warnings to people. You also are getting kick backs for people clicking your links. So...by you telling us this stuff, you get money no matter any of us run into any issues and I think that should be mentioned as a disclaimer. You have commenters providing more honest info than you, so while we appreciate it...I just wish you were truly honest about the caveats to this stuff.
Kat gives advice on places you can earn. It is not her responsibility to hold your hand and guarantee you an income. She is giving possibilities. It is up to you to get off your duff and do the work.
It's all about the click throughs. I've seen other UA-camrs and actually spoke to someone that does that.

Reading through the reviews for ACX from people who've done work on it in just this comment section as well as elsewhere, her recap of how it all works is definitely misleading. Understanding how she gets paid to do this makes how she's presenting it rather dishonest.
In the vein of taking responsibility... if someone is looking into a side hustle or any type of employment really, it is THAT adults responsibility to be well informed.

Just took a look at ACX Techniques and Critiques. Sounds like they want someone with some form of studio where the audition can be edited before its sent in. The guy said they don’t consider any laptop unedited recordings

Correct. Laptop mics sound like shit and will pick up the sound of the laptop whirring. You need a decent quality unidirectional mic with 50-16,000hz frequency response (I use the $89 CAD Audio D90 supercardioid), a quiet, noise-dampened room like a bedroom closet, mic stand, pop stop filter and some type of dedicated audio recorder to record high quality sound (I use the $229 Tascam DR-70D), then get audio editing software in your computer to edit and master the audio, convert from .wav to .mp3 (I use the $49.95 Sound Forge Audio Studio 10). If you already have a computer, great, almost all modern computers are more than capable of working with audio. Get 2 external hard drives to save audio files in 2 separate folders on both hard drives.
@@kthx1138 That's quite an investment which I would be prepared to make if I knew I had the skills to narrate well enough to win paid work. Can you tell me what kind of skills are required to be a voice over artist. I mean I'm sure you have to be able to do more then just "READ" which is all Kat Theo seems to think is required. In my personal case I think I'd be best at reading books which are non fiction, more along the lines of science and technology (as I have a degree in science); health and fitness; religion and spirituality. I don't think I'll require acting skills for these kind of books. Anyway you seem to have some experience in this profession love to hear your opinion on the skills required. I think Kat made it sound sooo easy and attractive!

Voice acting has always been a passion I never thought I'd be able to peruse due to my in ability to find resources and opportunities. I started looking when I was still in high school but after seeing this I have a glimmer of hope that I might still be up to it, and if not I can at least offer it to my nieces and nephews who used to love when I would read for them.

Yea I can too, but speaking out loud, it goes down to about 200, once u get used to reading aloud. I practiced a bit, so after about 2 weeks, I could get to about 200bpages a day, 8-10 hr days. I did record it but it was just for my daughter while I was working. Lol. So not perfect. Just my 2 cents.
