As a Spaniard, I really liked the fountains of silence and I'm glad more people get to know our history. The dictatorship of Spain is a period that it's not often discussed even among Spaniards but lately there have been more effort to uncover this past that, although it's not pretty, it's part of us so we need to know about it. The "niños robados" (kidnapped children) issue was a big deal in our country a few years ago and since then there have been a lot of documentaries and TV shows exploring the issue as the people who werd kidnapped are trying to find their biological families. I'm glad you got to learn more about our history. I also would like to clarify that although this story takes place after world War II, the dictatorship started before, after a Civil War in the 30s and Spain was neutral during both World War I and II.

I’m always buying books with a good deal, and then realize too late that the only reason I bought them was because that they were cheap (and not because I wanted to read them )😭

call down the hawk made me realize that you can love a character without wanting a whole book/series about them...I loved Ronan in the raven cycle but you have to admit, his interactions with the other characters in that series and the general group dynamic was what made him so likable. Still loved him in cdth but not as interested to know more about him as I was before. She could've written this with the new characters only imo

Same but I also think it's just because we grew up. I've accepted that I gotta let younger readers have their fun and I have to move on from YA if I want something compelling

Hidden Illusion is one of my favorite of Nora Roberts older books. I probably listen to the audio book version of this book once every couple years.

I bought The Fountains of Silence for my dad for father's day last year because he loves historical books (for context, we're also Spanish, and he was born not long after WW2), and he was hesitant to read it because he thought it wouldn't be accurate and he wouldn't like it. Well, he LOVED IT, he's obsessed with it and the level of detail and accuracy of the story, he keeps going back to it time and time again and has started reading more books by the author.

I have only read 1 Ruta Sepetys but it was amazing. I feel like it is historical fiction for people who don't love historical fiction and she does time periods that aren't the usual in her work.

Honestly, it's just nice to even hear about Call Down the Hawk, because I'm fully onboard with the series and see nothing about it, lol. I will say the second book ends with a bang, but the final book is coming out this year and I'm just happy to see the series around.

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender gets much worse. Towards the end of the novel there is a sa and mutilation scene. I remember reading it in shock. It's marketed as ya but as far as I remember there was no warning in the synopsis about this being a component of the story. I wish I had dnf'ed.

Over the years I've accumulated a few books I don't have an interest in. Either through gifts, people pressuring me, or me wanting to try different genres. 2 years ago I set myself the rule that for every 1 book I buy I have to read 2 books before I can buy another until I have no books on my tbr. It's really helped to get those books I don't have an interest in off my shelf. I give them a try but if I'm really not feeling it I dnf them and move on

I’m here for this concept. I used to work at Walmart and I perused the book section way too often and now I own way too many books I don’t need. 🙃 Also I totally admire you for wearing black pjs with three white cats. I have the same/very similar pjs and my gray tabby’s hair is 1000% the only thing visible on them when I have them on.

No one talks about how Ava Lavender has child abandonment. Sa and mutilation. I didn’t hear any trigger warnings and it was so damaging to me. I HATE that book. I wish I had never read. I immediately got rid of it after reading it. No one. Absolutely no one should read that book. That book should be trashed all over

HATED Ava Lavender, I finished it and was so horrified that it was so widely loved and revered. It felt really gross and not magical at all. You've definitely given me the encouragement to read some of Ruta Supetys books, I'm not usually a historical fiction fan either so you liking it makes me think I might enjoy it!

I'm actually like 60% into There Will Come a Darkness and I'm honestly enjoying it, not in love with it as of yet, but enjoying it. My favorite character is Anton, I just want Anton to be okay. I really like Hassan too and Jude is finally growing on me. I don't have a problem with Ephyra and Beru but I'm not that attached to them yet.

I think that, personally, my life was greatly improved by releasing the guilt I get about unhauling books without having read them. I am a very slow physical reader at this point, so I would keep books that I was never going to read for far too long and just getting rid of those has made it much easier to read the books that I actually want to get to.

Not only am I watching this video in my pj's -- I am wearing the exact same pj's that you are. Which shouldn't seem surreal, but after the past 2.5 years largely spent in pj's perhaps I should be more surprised it hasn't happened before now. 🤣😸

if you liked the fountains of silence, you should try “i must betray you”! it’s about the communist regime in romania and it’s sooo interesting to learn about that (also a really gripping and quick read) 🤍
