I’m currently enrolled in a Cisco networking class to learn more about the networking side of things, so this video couldn’t come at a better time. Thanks
Being a IT network admin throwing my foot over the PLC fence this is good stuff. Networking like PLC’s is a whole world of acronyms, methods and functionalities. Switches are my favorite! VLANS are essential in segregating networks and cutting down broadcast domains. Discussing layer 2 unmanaged / managed and layer 3 switches managed switches is a great idea. And not to get into the weeds but talking about tagged, untagged and trunking is great. Also getting into LAGS In this industry is a great idea for a resilient reliable network for mission critical applications.
BTW our company Honeyville should be ordering a trainer kit from you Guys. Thanks for the very helpful videos. Your training style is spot on and something I grasp very well.!
Tim Wilborne you did fantastic and your analogies are super helpful in why VLANS are used. PLC networks especially multi plc system should all be using vlans and in their own subnet. Having a layer 3 stratus that can route between those networks is super important and should help keep the layout simple. Otherwise your always at the mercy of the IT guys.
Hi Tim, really enjoyed this video and look forward to future networking content. It has recently become more relevant to me and my PLC team. We find ourselves now expected to have greater knowledge and capability in this area as cyber-security becomes ever more important in industry and the utility services. Keep up the great videos!
Hey Tim, I am using the EN2TP module with four Satrix 5700 switches for parallel communication. How can I communicate between two switches, and what needs to be configured in the web interface?.
We have Stratix devices all over at least 20 of them in the plant it is very important for us to be able to talk to any plc quickly from the office instead walking around also configuration of ports, troubleshooting I have your device it is very useful thanks Tim.not sure do you have a video on configuration of ports on stratix or other ones?
I'm glad our SIM-IPE is helpful. I haven't done a video on configuring a Stratix because there is a lot of background information that needs videos first but it is on the list.
Hi Tim, I've started getting more advanced use of this switch, and would love to see more videos. Just bumped into you site. This may not be the place to ask, but I'm going to any way because I am having trouble getting an answer. I am setting up a Compact with two separate I.P.s; .30 & .107. The VLan .107 for PLC & Panelview, the other for .30 for Private VLan, i.e. drives. This setup is for security and ability to get into network from any place and make PLC & Panelview changes. First attempt at networking. Thanks
Hi Tim, I'm finding myself in an environment with an increasing number of vendors and integrators and the networking is getting more complex. Have you figured out whether recent SIM-IPE instruments will be able to be upgraded to these new features ??
The features in this video aren't new. The DHCP client and updated change static IP menus are still in testing. Let us know you serial number and current firmware at the following link. twcontrols.com/contact
@@TimWilborne Ok Tim, I'll' check my newest one tomorrow. Question on your BOOTP, I used it to replace the address on a RIO block. After it accepted the address, I tried to confirm that it would remain static but I'm still not sure. I never got a clear cut yes or no on whether BOOTP / DHCP was disabled. That is a useful function but was not able to make that happen. Any thoughts?
VLANs can also be used to improve network security by separating the broadcast domain of the IT and PLC equipment, and using routing rules to control access between them.
I always enjoy every vid I was wondering if you could do an indepth on sink and source and how they are interchangeable on some plc and some photo sensors and other types of sensors/switches if u already did I'm sorry and can u point me to that one or others u found useful thanks and again really appreciate all u do
Hello Tim, I'm currently working on a site in California that uses a similar model of Stratix switches. I was trying to understand more details of the advanced configurations on these. I was browsing through each section via the web interface by typing in the IP address on my web browser. There are a lot of details that would be amazing if you made videos for it.
both your networks are 192.168. but what if I have 2 completely different networks like 172.24.128.x and 192.168.25.x, can i still route and communicate with these networks?
Yes. 192.168.0.X and 192.168.1.X are completely different networks the same as 172.24.X.X and 192.168.25.X are. Note how I left your 128 out. That was a class B address where 192 is a class C address. Google "ip address classes" for more information.
Tim's Network explanation is awesome ! Please, I'v a question regarding the configuration of the stratix, when it comes Brandy new, all ports come with a default network i guess, and what's the way to modify or assign each Port of segment following our own configuration or material as shown, i.e, is there any software or webpage that allows to connect with the device. Thank you 😊
If I need connect a tooling with different ip addresss than plc . Let's say tooling have scanner, cameras, sensors ,pneumatic block ,ios everything with ip 192.20.20.xx but the plc is 192.168.1.1 with Gateway 192.168.1.2 I cannot change ip addresses tooling because should run in different lines. What can I do for plc 192.168.1.xx be able to recognize the tooling with devices 192.20.20.xx?
Something with inter-vlan routing may help. I'm actually learning about this right now myself. Hoping to do a series on it in the future but don't have an answer today.
So I'm bringing in a new line at my plant and doing things a bit different each machine has its own Statix which will then run to a panduit panel which then runs to the idf... normally I've run equipment straight to the idf.... I'm afraid I'm going to create a network loop
Tim it's obvious you know your stuff but when communicating with IT people, terminology is important. You called the netmask the subnet. Oops. Why don't you explain that the netmask determines how much of the 4 octet address forms the subnet address and the remainder is the node address on that subnet? You also didn't really explain your routing table in the Stratix that you setup that lets you ping other devices on other VLANs which is important because just because you set up separate VLANs, they won't communicate unless you route them properly. More advanced topics would greatly explain many of these items that were skipped over. Thanks for all the time you take creating thess videos. Networks are a mystery to a great many control electricians.
Good video! Another video that includes replacing an existing switch and matching configuration would be useful. Thanks for all the great content
That’s a good idea! I don't work for the stratix switches much but have been learning a lot about networking lately.
I’m currently enrolled in a Cisco networking class to learn more about the networking side of things, so this video couldn’t come at a better time.
Thanks
Glad to hear it Anthony. I might do a few more, just hitting the basics.
Hi, Tim. I would like to see "more advanced videos" on networking too)) This Stratix switch looks very interesting.
The Stratix switch is a really neat product. Let me see how much feedback I get on this one. It is a little out of the realm of our typical video.
graduating engineer here- i enjoy watching your channel since i learn something practical
Glad to hear it! We try to keep them down to earth.

Hi Chris! Thank you for you comments! I was a little nervous stepping into the IT realm with this video 😀
Thanks, look forward to your trainer order!

Good to hear Dave. I'm going to do some "light" cyber security videos in the future.
yes, more of this please. Show us how to setup produced/consumed tags between these 2 plcs that exist on different subnets
That would make a good video
Best video I have seen out there! Amazing!
Thank you!
Hi, Tim !
Thanks for ALL !
Congratulations ...
You are welcome!
Awesome thank you Tim!!
You're welcome!
These videos are extremely helpful, thank u so much
Glad you like them!
At 3:45 was there any specific reason you used 1, 10, 20 & 30? Wouldn't you want more room in each subnet?
I randomly chose them just to explain Inter-VLAN routing.
Nicely explained, many thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great Topic, Enjoyed it!!
Glad you enjoyed it Manny!
It's really cool stuff. The Redundant Star Topology
Hey Tim, I am using the EN2TP module with four Satrix 5700 switches for parallel communication. How can I communicate between two switches, and what needs to be configured in the web interface?.
Haven't played much with the Stratix
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it John!

I'm First... lol ..Very good video Tim i've configured them before it would be a good video for you to put out in your style of teaching .
Let me think about how I can do that. Thanks for the feedback!
For sure...more advanced networking class
Could you do a video intercconecting VLAN I mean with the procedure for example a 3 segment network

I'm in the learning stage on the Stratix switch too Mark
what if we have more than two device to communicate on the network 192.168.20.xx with network 192.168.1.xx since we do only have one gateway?

We are thinking about it Collin. It is right on the edge of our typical video topic.
sdm templates option not showing in 5700 stratix 1783 BMS20CL
Tim.. a really easy way to set up the Stratix 5700, is the video from A/B. Express set up of 5700 switch.

Can you make a video on how to backup and restore a servo drive on rslogix5000? I can't find such tutorial anywhere online. Thanks!
We plan on making a few more servo videos and we can probably cover that. It will depend on which hardware we end up using.
I would enjoy more complex networking videos
kindly share the instrument used for chek the network in this video pls
It is the PLC Tools SIM-IPE. plctools.com/plc-tools-sim-ipe-ethernet-ip-address-explorer-dhcp-and-bootp-server/
Thank you very much
You are welcome

Yes it is configured via a web interface but know that there are several different Stratix switches and many do not have these features.
As I recall, ports 15/16 are the default DLR ports. 17/18 xor 19/20 may be configured DLR per Table 38 of 1783-UM007N-EN-P.
We use a IACS with DLR (Device Level Ring) for the network system as a whole.

I think in this case I might consult a qualified industrial network designer.
thanks tim
You are welcome!
Thank you

I have always felt that the Ethernet (IIOT), is the cake part of Industrial Automation.
I would really enjoy some more advanced networking lessons, its all about communicating and I personally need to better understand this stuff.
Let me see what I can do Michael. I think I'll try to tackle subnets next.
