H B Centex Its called pidjin AKA broken English.. its been made an official language... our official language... who said any of us want to go to Texas anyway... we live in Hawai'i one of the most beautiful places on earth.. you can keep your Texas.. Aloha.
Protesting what many claim is the illegal annexation of Hawaii is one thing, but scapegoating some scientists and a non profit corp. seems counterproductive.. Furthermore dropping the word 'sacred' as defense is doing more harm than good in my opinion. Gives this all the same flavor as so many other conflicts between science and old religious traditions and myths.
Ian Ryan Dude OHA gets at least 2mill simply leasing the building every year (over however long the contract says) Who's gonna work there Ian? You? I don't care what you have to say in a youtube comment because in real life...you are the minority and you are one of the few expressing strange behavior.
Not sure why you're responding to me if you really don't care about UA-cam comments.. And seems like something worth caring about given how much of the anti-TMT movement has taken place through social media like this. Where did you read they'll be paid $2 million per yr? Sorry but unless you can provide sources for your claims it's hard to trust the accuracy. There has been a lot of misinformation spread by those opposing this. Also not sure what you mean by 'you are the minority'. If you mean those supporting the TMT, then I'm not sure how you gathered those numbers either.
i hate to break it to yas, but it is getting built no matter what they would do. There is no shrines, or bodies buried at the site of construction. whatever they told you is misinformed just because they do not want it there. The islands need to move with the times(im no talkin about another honolulu no way), a stagnant economy offers your future generations and ours no hope in means to live or a worse off future, a mountain can not provide you with these means, it is sacred yes , but spots have been chosen wisely to honor the astronomy and advance mankind and your future generations in providing economic stimulus support for the islands. Most of all my colleagues have moved to the mainland and they are from the islands (more than half) because of jobs. It would of been nice for them to stay. As for me the job market is tough even with a doctorate here in hawaii, cause there isnt simply not enough for the graduates who want to live here and practice here because we like the diversity of people and the islands, but sadly the economy is not moving in that direction for the islands. Change is not easy , and i dont expect no one to take it easy cause it is hard depending how attached you are to the land, but given time things will make sense and healing will make us grow together, this thing is too big to pass up for hawaii.
epicxel Bunch of stone aged thinking regressives. Science must go on, its really just that plain and simple. And as you said there has been no desecration of lands etc. What I see is just some last minute money grabbing and them hoping for a signed check to make them go away.
at 21:37 she talks about that they come from here..so is that mean finders keepers losers wheepers? no person or culture originated here , we all came by boat, different times yes but ALL the land was made for everyone to share and there is still plenty of room to practice on the mountain after the TMT is built. It is sad to me that some people can not fess up and get with the times.
Fundamentalism of any flavor is dangerous.. Seems like a bad plan to adopt the Hawaiian genesis story as factual.. Look at those who believe the word of the bible (or any other 'sacred' text) as factual and read it literally instead of interpreting it as metaphor.. Leads to bad and strange behavior..
Ian Ryan Geeeeeeeet a GRIP! You don't have any business on the Big Island and the BIG ISLAND is better off without your 2 cents!... or billion dollars...whatever!!
I couldn't hear some of what he said, but not sure what your point is anyways.. you don't like the Mayor, therefore you're opposed to a telescope being built? Seems all you are interested in doing is assassinating the character of anyone who disagrees with you.. maybe try focus on the argument and not the person.
Ian Ryan Your xenophobia assumption is true! Like, everything I stand for! I don't judge you for your behavior... I judge how you present yourself! We can agree to disagree but understand ...If I was to agree with you? We would both be wrong! hahaha just stay where your at and leave the decisions about Mauna O Wakea to the pure/good intentioned locals.
Yet again barbaric fools stand in the way of science and progress. The mountain is "sacred", but how many times do you actually go up that mountain? When I lived in Hilo I would always photograph Mauna Kea in it's glory on a clear day when it wasn't covered by clouds. It's a beautiful sight and it is interesting to see the tiny telescopes up there. I have NEVER seen any locals even glance in the direction of the mountain, for them it was to common to pay attention to. If they build one more telescope up there nobody is even going to notice, but the tremendous advances in science and astronomy will be vast. So let's see on one hand we will have one more dot on Mauna Kea that will provide us with tremendous knowledge about our universe on the other we will have the same amount of dots and NO scientific discoveries what so ever. Hmmmmm..... tough choice. What a pitiful display of ignorance.
Several things you better understand before you start to talk and throw the ignorant finger around, yea cool you use to take picture of Mauna Kea on clear days but where were you on the not so nice days when the Ohana would clean up the opala and do what we could when allowed ah!?! Also if you was paying attention it's not because of the telescope it's self that is the problem, it's how these people are going about building it, no permits, documents still in court transactions etc...and why build another scope at a different site when there already is a broken scope up there being used for storage and lastly if we talking money, the U.S. Government pays the state of hawaii $1 a year per telescope on Mauna Kea but charges $80,000 to whom ever wants to use it?!?!
n seikravchik The "knowledge" you seek shall never be revealed in a telescope, no matter how great, THAT is a pity. BTW, I NOTICE because it's my backyard as well as 18 STORIES! I am for advancing science with a telescope, there are other places that are just as good to build it, now in Chile, another more advanced telescope is being built already! Your idea about these "choices" this way of "seeing" are obsolete; if we want to truly to advance humanity, look closely at your "self" and please tell me what is so important to YOU about the telescope being on Mauna Kea? I can say what is important to me about the mountain is the beautiful peaceful spirit (the feeling of connectedness) as well as the people who stand for it (who would stand for my sacred space or yours') how will it be peaceful with a 18 story building and construction for 10 years? Maybe you have never known this peace and I ask you to visit the Mauna and look through your own eyes and ask your heart how would it be "better" to have an obsolete bunch of materials brought up, while you contemplate how vast the universe might be; imagine a bunch of construction noise and lights (FOR YEARS!) as you gaze upon the heavens, wo. Oh wait, tremendous knowledge, that's what you want?! ....I guess you must see these things in a different way. To me, understanding human connection is just as critical as seeing into space, we should have BOTH! How can we send humans into space with such little understanding or respect for each other? By being open to understanding each other! ;)
ikravchik I would agree with your ignorance and assumptions about the locals you cite because YOU NEVER SPOKE TO THEM OR ASK HOW THEY FELT, just like those who illegally put up these telescopes in the first place. Your words are harsh and disrespectful. The Hawaiian people have bared enough of those who continue taking. This eye sore obstrocity is already being mocked by the European science community who has already advanced this technology with a better telescope. Maybe you should ask before making yourself look foolish in your emotional display and incorrect biased statements. Aloha means Hello and now Goodbye..
Okay one were not barbaric and two it is sacred and a bunch of people go up there I go up there every weekend to photograph as well or sketch don't get me wrong I love astronomy but I don't want to sacrifice a thousand years of history my ancestors were very excellent with astronomy they would look at the stars for navigation or they would climb to the peak of maunakea to study the stars but they didn't have to dig into the mountain there are many places to built this big telescope and there are13 telescope some don't even work if they can find another way to built it without digging or blasting into the mountain and in the state laws say that maunakea is sees lands and some it is for the people I read the history of maunakea and if you go up there would be a sign that say in black and white that maunakea belongs to the people so I believe that the people has a say in this that is all I got to say. Mahalo
ikravchik Barbaric? lol coming from a dude who has a cartoon pic lol if you knew what the hell was going on you'd know first off its not about being against science or technology. It's about illegally obtaining a permit to build on land its about desegration if those toxic chemicals leak into the delicate ecosystem of Mauna there goes Hawai'is largest water resource. Think about that fool before you start calling people barbaric you moron....
tmt is trying to do everything right.. I have followed this for years its a few people making too much of nothing economy culture wil be improved by TMT...and then there is the science...
I love Lanakila! Fearless
Much respect and strength! #protectsacredplaces
Ha!!!! trying to rush the groundbreaking before the Hawaiians arrive?!?! A’ole! Never happened! Right on Lanakila
The mountain only became sacred once they figured out they could get on TV
Aloha MAUNA LOA
~~~🌬️🌊🌴🌺🌋~~~
If king Kalakaua and queen Liliuokalani were here what would they say
Jaysenahuay Ahuna they wouldn’t allow it period this is desecration one main things Hawaiians don’t want to happen should be obvious
Aloha nui Lanakila.
Why is Richard Ha standing there behind Billy Kenoi? Is it because of his interest in geothermal at Mauna Kea and Hualalai?
No tumors on Mauna kea. We no need.
"and they even helped clean up afterwards"
Maika'i Kela E Kanaka Maoli O Hawai'i. True grace, strength and wisdom. KU KIA'I MAUNA!!!
I quote the Rock “Aloha, aloha hard.💪🏾
awesome! wish i could have been there in person. thank you for this amazing peaceful protest.
drop an A bomb on the protestors
I have heard that there really aren't any gods, spirits or unicorns up there. Superstition should never get in the way of science. What a disgrace.
Troels Hansen then put it in your back yard not ours
...and to think this could have all been prevented if we hadn't signed the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
Go Put-Put!
EO LANAKILA, 'WE TALK STORY, WE DONT TALK CIRCLE". ( ;
I think that at least if they take down the other telescopes then I think they could make the telescope
This is almost literally a book burn. Maybe the locals should sacrifice a child next. I'm pretty sure that was a sacred ritual.
In Texas they woulda been shot for talkin' foreenish.
Ian Ryan That's why they're non profit because they're trying to make illegal profit!...DUH
Can you elaborate on what profits you're talking about? Any source you could site would be helpful too
j02h Are you the lil mayor of the island who decides who 'has business' being there?
Isolationist xenophobia leads to strange and bad behavior too..
Ian Ryan The mayor sorta kissed ass and lied in the video...don't you think?
