At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

I got one for you Matt. Five or six years ago my fishing buddy decided to get into bait casters. I had to tell him that TREE BASS were extinct & to quit throwing his baits "UP" in the trees! At that point I mastered using the boat hook to pull down the limbs. Yes I taught him to cast, an old spook without hooks was a great aid. But he had me rolling at times! He's every bit as good as I am nowadays. But your 💯 percent correct about putting baits where no one else will. And I also have a homemade plug knocker on the boat. Our best fish come out of tree roots.

Matt, I find that the last method, with the heavy lure retriever, works best for large baits if you are directly over your stuck lure, especially if the retrieval weight doesn’t knock your lure free on first contact. To that end, I keep some of my weighted lure retrievers wrapped around marker buoys, the kind that only unwind to the depth achieved by the retrieval weight. Tossing these overboard after connecting the weight to your taught fishing line causes the buoys to position themselves nearly directly above your snagged lure, speeding the retrieval process by quickly allowing VERTICAL knocks of the weight against the snagged lure. For smaller lures, I sometimes send down a 4 Oz weight attached only to my fishing line with a snap, with no other line attached to the retrieval weight. For musky fishing in flooded timber, I always carry an adjustable length pole.

I agree 110% with your 4 tricks, but I have a 5th trick I use before going to the lure retriever. I have some cheap homemade saltwater style pyramid lead sinkers and some old crappy snap swivels. I used some old used braided line to tie the swivel side of the snap swivel to the sinker. When I hang up my crankbait I just snap the sinker onto my line and send it down. It knocks the crankbait loose most of the time. Maybe a gentle jig or 2 and if that doesn’t work then I’ll go for the real plug knocker on a string like you have. Old timers did this with old spark plugs. Good fishing!

Good tips Matt and I’ve used 3 of them before but the sling shot I don’t use even though I was aware of it cause to me no lure is worth risking a $3-400 rod outfit.

That is a great topic that I've never heard anyone else talk about. I've become pretty prolific at getting snags out. In a video once I seen you do the slingshot and use your Rod to get your bait unsnagged. I wondered how that works. Man I love the cutoff rod and reel to use for your snag remover. I found the snag remover that I wanted bought one and upon the first time using it fired it down my line just to have to break off my line lose my lure and my new retriever Good stuff matt! Ps figured out why the livescope on my new boat isn't working. I'm pretty pumped to hopefully get to try it out tomorrow

I’ve lost tackle and had countless frustrating moments, but trying to put my bait in the thick of the junk where there’s a higher chance of snagging has caught me so many fish and forced me to get better at casting. This was a key piece of the puzzle for me as novice angler(arguably I’m still a novice, haha) Great tips as always

Matt, I never “send” my rod, in your example the bait was shallow, but in water deeper than 7 feet, that is truly risky business, water logging your 250-300 dollar reel and risking damaging the rod tip is not worth a 6-10 dollar bait. Like your other suggestions, also consider old spark plugs as retrievers as well.

I hate it. Every aspect of it. I’ve been a big MLF guy since it’s birth, conservation is very important to me. I think this may ruin them. Everyone knows profession anglers need to get paid more. It’s sad that payouts today aren’t even half what they were 20 years ago. And they are going to cut payouts by a million!? It’s a business and they need to do what they need to do to survive but taking money from payouts is not the way. I’m sure there are at least 10 dudes on the admin side getting paid wayyyyy too much. Need to take the money from them. This is BS. Going to bring a lot of fans back to Bass for their primary group
