  • Only two countries in the world have public transport that is more expensive than Australia but there are calls for a radical solution to be tabled.
    Making it free.
    So, would it work?

      Below a certain price point, it’s better to be completely tax payer funded.
      Eg with cheaper tickets, the system still needs to pay for:
      * ticket inspectors
      * entry and exit screens
      * ticketing software and hardware
      * administration of fines and appeals
      * etc…

      Maybe not the companies, but companies employ many people that are paid salaries and wages, including bonuses. These are spent within society so surely there must be a direct or indirect tax to capture sufficient revenue for government? If there isn't, then it's the government's policy makers not casting the net far or wide enough.

      Public transport prices are growing faster than inflation and are badly managed. Woke initiatives to go full electric and mass demand by migrants are forcing travel expenses to continue. If we make our government make this free, our government then has to take focus of these other issues.

I, along with many others, would argue it is an ideology; thus my description of the term is: 'an elitist proposition to radical social (usually progressive) change' for this definition covers more of what I am talking about. Having public transport free would reduce the amount of vehicles on the road, which would reduce congestion and it would reduce emissions. It would also make buses more efficient due to less congestion. I used public transport between 2000 & 2008 to travel to work and back. I preferred public transport to driving as a weekly ticket was $30 then.

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 18 днів тому

      Yep and also means less wear and tear on the road, thus less frequent maintenance. Then shift that funds to get more buses. If the city has higher population density with good corridor for public transport, then maybe they can consider building tram for higher capacity if its feasible to do so.

Maintenance is needed badly hence this Big Build Project is implemented and with this it should run a 24 hour service so for those who like to go to concerts in the city or other functions that require odd hours can be rest assured a safe trip home.
    As for the Airport rail should be done ages ago as the airport is arguing over how it should be built must stop!!
    Ticketing should be at the door like that we see at train stations, so if you have a ticket the doors will open, Free for those who are looking for jobs, Free for those that are on a pension and the like, for those who have a Bike better tracks with signage as we see on roads, rail crossings in rural hot spots to be eliminated. $2B was the cost of trialling for one year (i.e. loss of revenue only). If the trial were to be successful, the cost of maintaining the payment equipment and systems would be eliminated, and the number of transport police could be substantially reduced because they wouldn't be needed to check if passengers had paid; they would only be needed to deal with bad behaviour. I have no idea how much these savings would be because it wasn't mentioned in the video which was woefully short on facts and barely worth the time it took to watch it; it was a silly 'entertainment' piece.

      What about non-user benificiaries? People who never use public transport still benefit from its existence - a tram with 100 people on board is 20 less cars on the road IF they all carried 5 people each - most cars only carry one person, so that's 100 less cars on the road per tram. A train with a thousand people on board could be a thousand less cars on the road. People using public transport means less congestion, less noise, less pollution, less accidents, etc - so it is not fair to suggest only users should pay.
