Very impressive small wave surfing - generated and maintained excellent speed throughout, perfect balance and weight transitions. Superior skill on display there to go along with an excellent board choice in those conditions.
Intermediate mid 40's here. got this board a week ago and I can confirm the mashup does surf beautifully and effortlessly on small waist high waves as a quad too
Outline looks great combination ! Honestly these are quality small waves clean with a bit of power and easy entry, wonder how another small wave board would work. The mashup looks really good
Was thinking the same, those were actually quality waves. Anyway, the Helium construction really sets it apart for airs and these super quick snaps because those boards are incredibly light.
I had a few surfs in some windy, stormy surf on it… nothing overhead, but it transitioned between sections really nicely with the foam being more forward!
Large endorfins are my go to! From time to time I will put a medium set in to get a little more “loose” feeling in a board if it feels too stiff with the large set up!
Awesome vid! Could you tell me why this works better as a thruster over a quad while the dominator 2 works better as a quad over a thruster? I have heard many say the Dominator 2 should be ridden as a quad, given that the tail for the Mashup was based off the dominator 2 only slightly wider, why is it that a a thruster works better for the Mashup?
Because the fin boxes in the Mashup were repositioned to make it work really well as a Quad, Thruster, or 2+1. Both Dan and Rob worked on making the fin cluster ideal for all three fin setups. Today Kevin likes it most as a Thruster with Kelly's KS1 Endorfins Thruster, and also as a 2+1 with Machado's 2+1 set from both Futures and FCS. Today Rob surfs it most as A 2+1.
@@stevehills5753 I got that board a week ago with the Dan Mann FCS .running it as a quad and its works brilliantly .you will be surprised how that boards really is easy to surf. making turns and manoeuvres with the mashup just happens naturally. I got my best surf ever in years with that board on small waist high waves doing moves I never did ever before. and I am mid 40's
Completely up to you and what you like the feel of… I have surfed all three setups, quad, thruster and 2+1, ultimately enjoying thr 2+1 the most in small surf because of the slide and loose feeling it gave! Thruster and quad loved projection down the line on this mashup! But definitely play around with fin setups to find what works for you!
It does very well. The rail, fin cluster placement, rocker, concave and volume distribution through the back third of the Mashup were all designed with good waves in mind.

@Kevin Schulz, did you ride the 5’2” @ ~25L? If so, how did it go for you? Did you feel, similar to your video on the Flat Earth, that going up to 27L+ was better? Maybe less skatey? Thanks!
That was some really, really, really impressive small wave surfing. I would have looked like absolute shit in those waves and he was flying all over the place.
I own the mashup in the 5'9 with the ks1 endorphins. Currently riding as a quad setup. I find it more tricky to paddle for wave than the seaside, but once up it really wants to be thrown around. Need more practice time on it. Surf around here has been really big and messy lately..
How do you find the Endorfins??? What size are you riding please? Weight and height? I just bought a 6'6" Mashup. I'm 5'11" 215LBS 48 years old. I used to gave the old KS fins and they were rubbish to me. Big fan of FCS2 Performance or Mick Fanning. I got the Mashup on futures so I'm a bit lost now 🤦🏻♂️ Cheers!
Hey guys this boards being advertised as a groveler (1-4 ft on your site plus this video). How would it go as a daily driver for the experienced surfers who can only buy 1 board? Have you found a max wave height that it can be pushed to in typical southern CA breaks?
The max wave height so far is two feet overhead, but none of us have ridden it in anything bigger yet, so we're not sure what the upper limit is. The Mashup's tail is very thinned out through the swallow, and so is the rail through the back third of the board. Both these design elements coupled with the fin box positioning and rocker help the board feel drivey and firm in more powerful wave faces, despite how much volume is distributed through the forward 2/3rds of the board for paddling and groveling and gliding.
Great question! I think in a “good wave” … something with a big wall and a line this board would hold pretty well with the baby swallow and step-down deck in the tail!
Been surfing slop like that for 38 years it's easy to surf small waves because you have to generate the speed, as a big wave is controlled turns and the waves generate the speed which i personally hate.
Not sure, there is still a lot of contradiction about this board being shared on other reviews. Paddle power is the main discrepancy. Yes everyone has an opinion but showing a 120lb ripper isn’t a good example for me. Maybe show also a 160-170lb rider as well..

Exactly my point. The dude can rip an airplane wing.. need to see the masses on one. Average joe, weekend worrier.. furthermore it would help to know the dimensions too on that board? Thanks.
Those are not small waves at all. Most boards will go mental in waves like these. Sorry, but Californians are delusional when it comes to a lot of things: acceptable house prices, "cold" weather, and definitely waves. We call this chest high and super fun where I live, as do many, many surfers worldwide.
