Building the Ultimate Retro ThinkPad - Part 2

  • Hello everyone! Here is the much-awaited sequel to my last FrankenPad video, where we are making one fine machine for me to enjoy. In this video we are swapping the T60's motherboard for a T61 board, with some important information about the process and what not to do. Unfortunately some additional parts I bought for this were lost and one was a scam so that set me back from making all of the upgrades I had planned on doing. Guess we'll be doing that some other time. As always I hope you all enjoy the video!

    You sir have perfect timing 👍LOL I have just started going down this road, I'm looking on eBay to get the pieces I need.
    It's a little sad to think back in the day I have given away a couple of old t60, t61 with nvidia and flexview and t420 's to friends and family, I know I am a little horrified by the prices being asked for some of the hardware yikes.
    I currently have a second generation yoga x1 with an OLED screen and a p50 with a 4K screen but I still miss the keyboard and 4 by 3, to me that was always the perfect form factor and user friendly keyboard.
    So thank you for the tutorial so far and very much looking forward to episode 3. I really appreciate the effort you've put into this project and sharing it with us.
    Thanks Andy.

    That frankenpad looks great! I've always wanted a 4:3 thinkpad but i got japed hard on Kijiji and bought a 16:10 that i thought was 4:3. But at least the battery worked in my T400 (and had 100% health) so it wasn't a total loss. Keep up the good work!

    I've just watched it again waiting for parts for my T60 to Frankenpad it.
    Still deliberating on CPU, if X9000 is worth the price and thermals with its higher TDP ten T9300 and T9500. Waiting for part 3 with your conclusions on X9000 and ram upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, so expensive.

    I got a T60p off eBay - it has a Core 2 Duo T7600, 2GB RAM, but it's somewhat broken - the seller said it doesn't power on, the power LEDs won't light up, and the IPS display was dim when working. It looks like I might need to replace the mobo and I'll have to do the CCFL to LED mod. Is it better to FrankenPad it instead of getting a standard T60p mobo?

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 роки тому

      If you can get your hands on a reliably working T61 motherboard, it's definitely a worthwhile purchase. A lot of performance improvements over the T60.

      @@SebisRandomTech Alright so I got the laptop, and I transplanted the T7600 CPU into my normal T60. You should do the CCFL to LED upgrade video, since I'd like to repair this IPS panel and put it in my regular T60.

    Hi Seb, need your help
    I wanna get a thinkpad & my options are either t430s or t450s (where i live only s models are available for the most part and t430s & newer)
    Which of the two would you recommend ? What i5 or i7 processor should i go after ? Also a bit worried about t450s max ram being 12gb (can't overspend on a 16gig single ram stick)
    Thank you and keep up the good work.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 роки тому +1

      T450s (if it has the FHD screen) has a better screen and *far* better battery life than the T430s. On the other hand, the T430s is a bit more upgradeable, arguably has a better keyboard, and can accept an external GPU.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  4 роки тому

      Just keep the T60 service manual handy and it shouldn't be too difficult. In my opinion it's easier than some of the later IBM ThinkPads. The most annoying part is having to remove a few of the standoffs from the rollcage for the T61 motherboard to fit, however some people have managed to do the board swap without modifying the rollcage.
