I have also put it through extreme testing by digging 5 foot deep trenches, holes, and have dug out stumps most people would not dare do with a machine they built by hand. So far, every weld, every part has held up to almost 60 hours of pretending it is a larger tractor than it is. You can check our playlists to see some of the projects it has done. Tractor weights approximately 1900#. Total Estimated Cost for this project start to finish was about $4,000. Comparable to a Kubota BX25 at $25,000. Thank you for saving the tractors.

Great work Norman. One of the most pleasing jobs I had, throughout my working life was as chief fabricator and lead mechanic at a large small engine repair shop, back in the late seventies. Now retired, and all of my family passed away, you have inspired me to fire up the welder, Mill, and lathes once again. Keep up the good work, hopefully in a year or less, I'll have some pics to forward you. Thanks again for bringing back good memories, and inspiring an Ole part to get off his butt and get busy again. Awesome videos. You should add a gripper to the backhoe or make your loader bucket split. So you could grip things like a small log you wanted to cut up. But a very beautiful rebuilt tracter. I forgot about the white paint on the tracter till you mentioned it. Great Job!!!

You can install a flow diverter. They are very common and easy to use. You probably already know that. I am not being critical. I love your work.

Nice job Norman, I think the only thing I would’ve done different is to put it on a four-wheel-drive platform and use a 2 stick control for the backhoe, and add a thumb nice job it looks great

I like how you keep the controls where they kinda should be are old backhoe 3 middels where boom control 1 bbucket. 1 lower 1 uper boom left otriger on left out side. And right out riger outer right side and foot petells are swing
I really really like your tractor. sir, for my needs I think I just need the front end loader. in less their could be quick attach and detachable back hoe. but I really need the back for my rototiller and a few other attachments. I like your videos keep up the great work saving me money all the time. lol

Hi Norman.
I have to point out that the seat back is not for loungin about but it serves an extremely important safety function.
For example if the front axle of the tractor goes into a hole or some dip in the ground the back of the machine
will move forward in an arc and the controls will hit you in the back. Inertia will prevent your upper body to move along with the tractor since it is not attached to it. Your body hitting the controls can adversly move some of the hydraulics and hit something or someone.
I would suggest that instead of having a swivel seat, a lockable seat back that can be moved from the front to the back and padded on both sides would be an easy solution.
Your safety has some importance here.

Flux core is for amateurs, you should be doing .045 Lincoln L56 or something comparable for structure welds. Great job on the cub cadet anyhow 👍🇺🇸
I took old steel car rims drilled 5/8 holes into bead lip and welded heavy office chair caster wheels into holes my jack stands fit nicely on front bead lip. Set front tires on 2 rims one rim n stand in middle of tractor and used home made crossbar on floorjack slid rearend out of 1450 cub with 1 hand

did you use all 2"x 16" cylinders? great job, i think it looks a lot better without the white. i would love to see a video on the hydraulic system from start to finish. nice job with the seat also
Hi Bill, The cylinders on the backhoe vary in size, but are all 2" bores. Thanks for the suggestion on the video. I will add that to my list of videos to make and I should be able to have it ready in a couple of weeks.

I like the 'case commercial' style paint job. The machine looks great. How come you decided to go with a direct connection not use a pto?
Thank you. I was going for a CAT color scheme. I decided to leave the hydro pump on full time because I didn't like the manual clutch set up that the Cub 149 had originally and since it has a starter/gen, I couldn't hook up an electric PTO easily. In the future I would like to upgrade the engine by adding a starter, Stator, and electric PTO.

when selecting the loader sticks, did you consider a joystick i.e., X-arms, and Y-bucket? that way you can simultaneously move both with one hand and steer with the other say if you wann work fast? (side question: would this mean it would demand more form the hydraulic system since all cylinders are working?)
hey I did consider a joystick but I don't like them. I prefer sticks like are here. I can move both motions with the same hand. when using both spools the valve will send fluid to the cylinder with least resistance first then flow into the second motion

Excellent work. The loader controllers are total opposites tho. The standard is on right side with the lift being the left lever and bucket is the right lever. Several reasons one being most enter on the left side of machine and them being on the right you don't bump when getting on and off. Another is like on most shutle shifts are on the left side like on the IH hydro lever. I'm not knocking it but just pointing out it would be awkward for any one who is use to the standard to operate. I would still love to have it tho😃
Thanks for the input. I put the loader valve on the left so my left hand can operate all of the levers while my right hand remains on the steering wheel. It makes the ergonomics better for me. The right lever has the float position so it had to be for the loader arm. I didn't have room to mount the valve upside down. Thanks though for the feedback. I will be building more so I will consider your suggestions
Also, for Garden Tractors there was no "Standard" back then anyways. We modeled the loader controls after the ones made by Kwik Way Manufacturing which had the loader controls on the left, as did Johnson Manufacturing. Some were on the right too. So to each their own I guess! My first loader was one from Kwik Way and it was on the left, so I've just gotten use to it being on the left.
Hi Norman, you did a great job on the TLB. It looks like the pf engineering plans? I really like the finished project! I more than some know the work that is involved in doing one of these. I did the exact same conversion to a John Deere 322. If you search UA-cam for "John Deere 322 backhoe" you'll find it. I would really like to get your feedback on it, as you have done it yourself. Excellent job man! I have is used mine alot. I like how small these machines are verses the capabilities they have. you can put turf tires on and not destroy the lawn. I own a contracting company and use mine to dig footers, clear brush, etc. Amazing little machines. again Great job Norman!
Thanks Jason for your comment! I actually watched your videos over and over before I attempted my build. I did use the PF Engineering plans and overall I am very happy with it. The only thing I would do differently next time is change the angle of the front end loader boom arms. The PF plans put the bucket too close to the tractor so it's hard to see where the bucket is in relation to the ground. I have a Kwik Way Front End Loader on a Ford LGT 145 and it has the width of the loader arms wider, and it puts the bucket a foot further out in front of the tractor. So I have better visibility and more reach when dumping. Other than that, I am very happy with how it came out. I have used mine to dig out small stumps, some drainage ditches, and some holes for posts. I am actually planning to build another backhoe for the front of a Jacobsen Turfcat GW224 Commercial mower. I am going to make the reach of the backhoe a foot longer and dig a little deeper. Thanks again for your kind comment!
isavetractors yes, there a more than a few things I would do differently if I ever built another one for sure. The PF Engineering plans are a solid guide, but need to be tailored to fit each tractor. I don't see myself building another one in the near future, but I will be doing some upgrades soon. 1st I plan to add the John Deere 420 rear conversion. The 420 rear axle has a hi/lo range and a foot engage posi lock up. Then I will definitely be doing the extend-a-hoe on the backhoe. I really wish I would've extended the entire setup from the start. As it sits now I can dig about 4'10". Not bad, but I'd like to get closer to 6'. I did notice the fel bucket is a little more narrow than the wheels, not a big issue, but it's always nice to have the front bucket wide enough to clear a path for the wheels. This is the only video I have watched so far, going to go watch your others of the build now. btw, I see you have a ton of tractors sitting around. If you come across a JD 420/430 rear axle that you would like to sell please let me know. I have 3 420's, but all are in to good of condition to tear apart. Looking forward to your next build.

I've got a small thing. Your backhoe controls. Wouldn't it be better if you had the 2 outside controls for jack legs, 3 in a row for boom, dipper and bucket with the 1 remaining for swing? Have you designed the controls so that if you pull boom, dipper and bucket together it digs a level horizontal ditch? I just get curious about such things. Nice fabrication job. Happy digging.
Yes it's set up like you said except for the middles are the outriggers. I put the middle ones as outrigger so the hands wouldn't be so close together.

Great build. Did have a few questions though as I just went through the whole build. Whatever happened to the dually idea from the beginning? End up being to much work that wasn't worth the effort?
Secondly, was there any reason you went with the 149 series tractor versus some of the bigger more beefier series like 782 or 982, or something along those versions that are similar to the JD 425/445/455 lines that everyone seems to rave about in the garden tractor world? Not complaining was just more curious since this is machine that will be doing a fare amount of heavier work.
Lastly, whats your opinion on the cub cadets once they went away from IH to MTD around 81? Do you typically try to stay away from post IH cadets for one reason or another?

Hey Zach, Thanks for watching the entire build! I did end up ditching the dually idea, as it would have made moving around in tight spaces a little harder. Good observation though! I will save the dually for another project in the future.
I went with a 149 because of the wide frame and hydrostatic hand controlled set up. I didn't use a Super Cub Cadet like the 982 because they are not common here in Maine. I didn't use a JD 400 series mainly because of cost, and because my company is focused on Kohler K Series Engines, and the JD 400 series don't have them.
The IH Cub Cadets use the Cast Iron Rear Ends, and MTD ones use an aluminum Rear End. I wanted the Cast Iron one for the added weight and durability with the backhoe.
Hi again I was going to order the same pump off northern, but the pump info say don't use a pulley. It looks to me that you are running a pulley so could you please let me know what you are using. Thanks I sure do love your tractor i'm trying to do the same with my old Craftsman 18HP tractor

Just curious Norman but you originally said it was going to have a dually set up with ag tires, i see you stayed with the ag tires but didn't go with the duals why not?
I don't have a good reason. I have another set of ag tires and spacers, so I may add them on still and see how they look and perform! Thanks for bringing that up!
Hi Norman, what sort of pulley are you running on the hydraulic pump? I've got the plans from PF Engineering and they call for a split-tapered bushing pulley on the pump side too.
I'm using split taper pulleys just like they recommend

4 to 8 GPM Gear Pump from Northern Tool. I believe it was the concentric brand. But any gear pump that puts out 8GPM would be sufficient for this sized backhoe

Those are 50 pound wheel weights. I ended up not using them and that's why they only make an appearance in this video. Good eye!

There are supposed to be rubber seat stops for the bottom of the seat pan.
Do you have a blue print for the backhoe? And you also added foot controls to you have a print or parts list of doing this?

are you using some kind of pressure reducing valve ? also do you like the speed rate that the 4-8 gpm pump puts out?
DriveTrain Production the loader valve has an adjustable pressure relief. I do like the 4 to 8 gpm pump. the speed is helpful when using more than 1 backhoe spool at a time

I recently bought a cub with a loader and backhoe from a guy and am missing the hydralic plans anyway I can get you to send me some better pics of the hydralics?
It's not as easy and sending you hydraulic plans. For you, you need a basic understanding of how a hydraulic system works. Hydraulic plans for one machine won't necessarily be the same on another.
HI Norman! Me again I am looking for some good advice. someone gave Me A John Deere 400 Garden tractor. It's A tank. but it is burning a Little oil And I'm planning on doing a complete overhaul and restore on it. and videoing it for someone. So you will be able to watch me fail and recording. also going to put a loader on it. My question is where would u recommend me getting me rebuild kit from. I have only found them on ebay and I don't know about some of them. I only work on bigger Ag tractors. So the little stuff is a little different any advice would be great. the engine is a QK532 Kohler. Also where did you get your plans for the loader. Thanks. Colin.
Hey Colin, The JD 400 is great! We will have a complete rebuild kit available for the K532 engine in the near future. Our kits will be as comprehensive as the ones we currently offer.
