What Is A Row Hipper?! And How Does It Work??!!

- I needed something to make rows in my garden. My tractor dealer hooked me up with a row hipper, BUT what is a Row Hipper? And how does it work? I couldn't find much info on the web about one, so we will learn together in this video.

Till up the ground more then what it is in the video, move your disk gangs together a little more, then you will get a nice row in 1 pass. If you want the row taller make a second pass. I have a row hopper from Steven’s Tractor, and it works great.

Looks great John. I built a single disc version a few years ago. It has a center piece that creates the row to plant in. We called this a hiller and used it for hilling potato rows and other crops to manage water run off and weed control. Not much video info on the subject as you noted. Does work best after the ground is plowed, then tilled and raked to remove rocks and debris. I like the three disc version for these types of rear tires. Ag tires can typically get away with single disc like the one I built. I built mine to do garden work for hire but everyone started doing raised garden beds around here and you can’t get a tractor up on those. Enjoyed the video I’m sure you will get a lot of use out of it.
Thank you Dave! When I was growing up everybody had gardens in the back yard, and if they didn't have a back yard it was in the front yard. Now you are lucky if you see a garden at somebody place in the country. I don't know much about how the row hipper is supposed to work but I figured out enough to get it to do what I need it to do. I think you would have been better off by running your tiller again in your garden before using your new hiller.

I sure like the total adjustability of the tool. I think running just one gang, you could even make small ditching swales with it. You would have to remove the thrown dirt by shovel, but it looks like it would lay down a nice shallow drainage ditch.

Looks good! We bought a bedder last year and spent some time getting it set up like we wanted. It sure makes short work out of what used to take us hours to do with a hoe! Have a great weekend!

Disk it, till it rip it, do something prior to using the hopper. I have an identical row hipper from Steve’s Tractor. It works very well. I love it. I also prepare my soil prior to using it.

I have one built by Howse(no longer in business😔)that I bought in 2013. They called theirs a ridger. It works great. I disk first, then pulverize with the tiller and then make my rows with the ridger. I make a row, go back down with the plow up and then make another row, make a row-skip a row. Look up Web Cajun on here for information about this. I do this with a John Deere 5105 and I will have very close to 5 feet between rows which allows me to get my tiller in there and clean out between rows. Great for a pea or melon patch. We have had so much rain in northeast La. this spring, it may be July before I can get anything planted. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Great tool, John. I think you are correct by saying to use the hiller right after tilling. Doing that and closing the distance will do a fantastic job. The MF is lighter and probably has a narrower stance. That might help too. The hillers might ride over the MF tire tracks.

@LouisianaTractorworks No, sorry John. I don't know much about them. I used to see them in use on the farms around me when I was a kid. The only thing I recall is they would hill the garden right after tilling it, so the soil was loose. That's how I remember it, anyway!
@@twinbrookacres Yea, That's what I thought but demoing it on flat ground let me see just how it cuts with the different setting. But what you are saying is the right way of doing it.

tool is lite and needs some weight on it thinking a 40 lb hanging weight like on a compact tractor

have to take the fact that was hard ground you was testing in there the weights i am thinking of are the 40 pound ones from deere is where i got mine from and i think you would only need one and that would help the tool from being jumpy when it hits a hard spot @@LouisianaTractorworks
That was painful to watch did you break it yet it's not very sturdy it might last a little while going to be even more stresses when you are moving actual dirt maybe if you set it up just right I wouldn't go too deep either let me see if I can find said I used to follow b a y o u you something something
