Facts 7ft is 7ft and there actually really aren't that many TRULY GREAT 7ft players: Shaq, Wilt, David, Dirk, Kareem... idk if we can name more than 10 but regardless in any era of course thr 7ft dude is the biggest guy LOL he's just young he doesn't realize how different it actually was. Nowadays the centers can be 6'9 hell how tall was Ben Wallace? Was he 6'8? Rodman was like 6'8. Russell was only 6'9 and would hold Wilt while still jumping over other equally tall opponents.

Early in Shaq's career, when he played for the Orlando Magic, I saw something I've seen just that one time. The Magic had the ball on offense, 4-on-5, because Shaq was late coming up the court. He built up a head-of-steam, running right at the basket. A teammate passed to him for a dunk, and it seemed to me that the opposing players just got out of the way of Shaq, instead of playing defense. Maybe that's not what happened, but it looked like it.

His ability to gain position, his footwork at that size, his agility, his post game, jump hooks, back spins into lobs, black tornado spin, drop steps, pivot game , passing, etc. he had game. Thinking Shaq is better than Kareem just proves that you don't know a lot about basketball other than dunks.

The rules of the game when Kareem played in the 70s did not allow for much contact. Rules changed in early-mid 80s.

Been watching the Lakers since I was 10 years old in 1979, Magic’s rookie year so I saw both of their careers (not Kareem’s prime) and Kareem was better. Now I will say this, one of y’all referenced when Kobe said Shaq would’ve been the GOAT had he been dedicated and that is a fact but he himself will tell you that he wasn’t dedicated like that, he was cool with being the MDE instead of the GOAT. We can only judge what they did, not what they could’ve done and by that measure Kareem was better.
One reason Shaq played against more taller players is because the league just had more teams when Shaq played than when Kareem played (4 expansion teams) and if I remember correctly more roster spots(?)
I would argue that it is quality versus quantity and Kareem played against more tall players than you think he did:
Bob Lanier 6’11”, Walt Bellamy 6’11, Wilt 7’1”, Walton 6’ 11”/7’, Jack Sikma 6’11, Artis Gilmore 7’ 2”, Moses Malone 6’10-11”, Parrish 7’, Laimbeer 6’11”, Ralph Sampson 7’4”, Hakeem 6’11”-7’ and Ewing 7’ are all centers that Kareem faced in his career and there are more but I didn’t list them because they are a tier lower than these dudes are. Other than Zo, Duncan and Robinson who did Shaq face that was better?
You can’t say Kareem didn’t play against as many seven footers as Shaq (implying that Kareem had it easier) without looking at the difference in weight /skill of some of the people Shaq played against. In one clip one of y’all points out a dunk Shaq had against Georghe Muresan because he was 7’7” except he was a journeyman-bum level player. Kareem dunked on Mark Eaton who was 7’4” 300+ pounds and unlike Muresan was actually the all time leader in blocks for some years. Yes Shaq is the most freakish player ( sorry LeBron and Zion) this league has ever seen but he didn’t have that drive to be the absolute best version of himself while Kareem did and it showed on the court, while it wasn’t as flashy the results are the results.

Average height in the NBA has only increased about 4 inches since the start of the NBA. Most of your favorite players are under 6 foot 4. It's rare that the tallest player in the league is a super star.
