Hi 👋 This pooping video was reminding me my child hood. When I’d stay with granny ( R.I.P. ). I’d have use bucket at night Then outhouse during day No shame at all Peace and clean be with y’all ❤️🌻🙏😇😎😆
The fact that you can make a video about a toilet 13 minutes long is impressive! 😆 We are actually working on modifying our toilet this week. Adding a pee diverter
@@FnAVanLife Not sure. Here n the states it’s Tractor Supply. Maybe try a feed store. They are sold to use in stalls or animal cages and such. It turns to sawdust when wet and also dries out the solids. It’s only about $6 here. Probably dirt cheap there if u can find it. The best part is that you just throw it in a dumpster when u change it. I know! I know! Diapers from babies and adults are thrown away too. Lol!!
I think your system is great. I’m confused about the chemical smell in the cassette toilet you spoke about. We have a Thetford cassette toilet in our van, and it does have to be emptied often, but when you empty it, you clean it out and rinse it. We don’t use any chemicals usually. We have occasionally used a few drops of the bacteria/enzyme treatment, but that cuts down on the smell. It doesn’t smell like chemicals at all. Maybe you are talking about a different system. We love our cassette toilet.
It's probably because of the bacteria enzyme that yours doesn't smell. Or you are used to the smell of that type of toilet for us it always seems to smell like a port a potty due to the chemicals being used. Another question is it for trips or full time use? I wonder if that makes a big difference too. 8
I say this in the best way possible... You two are f-ing nuts! Thank you for making this video. I know I personally asked you about this, so thank you for tackling this in the way that only you two can. I get so much joy out of watching your adventures. Thank you for making my day FnA!
@@FnAVanLife Well, you didn’t do the required toss, leaps, spins and you didn’t stick the landing on Frankie’s ass! All point deductions. Sorry. I did give you a 10 for grace though so there is that!
This is in the top five best video you have made!!! You put allot of thought into this one! Love the skits. You two were hilarious!!!!!! Great subject and helping tons of people find a lower cost version is GREAT. You had me rolling in the isle and that is not easy to do in myself converted van:-)!!! Loved the video!!!!!! I am FnA forever!!!
Thanks so much!! We miss seeing you on the live chats and getting chances to talk with you. You area amazing and we are so grateful to have you in our FnA family.
So so funny!! I think your toilet system is really good. Inexpensive and works well with less fuss. I agree those cassette toilets are GROSS! Your presentation… hilarious!! 😂😂😂
If u use pine pellets you wouldn’t have to use urine diverter or go to the trouble of unscrewing it. I agree that either is better than the expensive ones.
I did the same think when driving a semi...except minus the dirt. I just stopped somewhere and threw it in a dumpster or trash can. Will do the same when I start nomadic life in the short bus I am working on.
First! Here is a tip for putting that bag in the bucket. Twist the bag a few times so it looks like a long closed umbrella. then, just put the bottom of the bag down into the bucket. Super easy. We have the cassette toilet but we use the bag method if we need to drop yesterday's lunch. So, essentially our bathroom is a number 1 only. PLUS, because we can, we bought one of those fold up toilet seats for when we are out in nature by ourselves. doesnt take up that much room in the van and makes those morning dumps in nature way more comfortable without having to use a plastic bag.
I know we are supposed to comment on the poop video and that was good. You can make anything funny while being informative. But I wanted to say I love your new look Frank. 😀
Everyone always watches the poop in the van videos, lol! Great job and I think you are right on...KISS method is always better but I think my OCD would require double bagging!😊💩
I also use a porta potty which you call a cassette toilet. A proper cassette has a fixed toilet and separate tank. Our porta potty has a five gallon tank and sits in its own compartment. We use baking soda found anywhere in the world and cheap. No chemicals and no paper in the toilet. You can empty it anywhere: pit toilets and rest stops and dump stations in the US. In baños and cat holes in Latin America. There is no plumbing and no need to flush with water. I mention it not to convince you but someone wondering about a toilet for a van it is a cheap and simple option if the bucket and dirt choice doesn’t appeal. Good on you for explaining your choice so clearly.
Absolutely love your videos! Great practical advice. Since my van is not complete, but I am living in it, mostly local w/ family and friend driveways, I decided to wait on the toilet and shower to see how often I felt like I needed it. For #1, I am using an old kitty litter container, a dollar tree filter, and vinegar spray. I pee at work and whenever I have access so I only empty it about every 4 days, and it’s not full. I have an emergency fold up toilet w/bags for #2, but I haven’t used it even once. My body has adjusted from an early morning routine to mid morning so I am always near facilities. Before this lifestyle, I really thought a toilet and shower would be an absolute, but I am realizing you just need backup plans! Keep up the great videos and talking about things most people won’t!
Awesome congrats on being in the van build process. We are so glad we can help give advice but know it is always going to be different for each person. Make it your own and make it work for you that is the most important part of making your van work.
I buy 40 pound bags of pine pellets aka horse bedding at Tractor Supply for $6. You don’t have to use much and there’s absolutely no smell even when liquids and solids mix. Much cleaner than dirt and probably cheaper too!
@@FnAVanLife I bet you can! It's just sawdust compacted into some sort of clear tubing (gelatin based maybe?) then cut into 1/2 inch pieces. The "tubing" instantly dissolves once a small amount of moisture makes contact they expand. I live in North Florida and even high humidity can make the pellets swell up a little sometimes! Great for cat litter boxes too!
The bucket was the first thing I bought for the van. We dig a hole, put the dirt in the bucket, and fill the hole back in with a small deposit. We don't use bags, because the dirt actually cleans the bucket very well. Like better than when we use vinegar and water. Also Carmela has used the litter box which is saw dust. So if your followers have cats, they can save more money and space and use the litterbox. The cats were only slightly pissed off, but nothing some wet food or treats didn't solve.
Best one yet. I think only you two could have gotten away with a POOP 💩 video and made it funny. I laughed so much, Thank you, but maybe I shouldn't have watched it while having a beans on toast lunch 🤭. Love the new hair cut Frankie. Hugs to Paco, Hugs UK
I don't have to do number 2 in my bucket very often but when I do I dump it out I don't have the bags and stuff cause I use it at my house in my room which is too far away from the bathroom for me plus in my car that is my tent on wheels I also have a bucket They work great! This was a great fun video you guys did good!
I have not seen any van videos suggesting adding soil to cover up the smell. Also, it is nice to see how to add my similar urine diverter to a bucket. Brilliant video!!
The bucket is a great option but I really like my Airhead. I went with the smaller urine container and would be willing to bet it takes up only a small amount of additional space compared to the bucket. As functional and convenient as the bucket option is, the Airhead feels like it takes that to 11. No tools required to clean, very sturdy construction, air tight seal on the lid, and you can even pee standing up if you're so inclined. The price is insane but as with most things, you get what you paid for. Super fun and informative vid, ya'll. 🙌🏼
The price is way to much in my opinion the size after would be similar though. If we had the extra money for it maybe plus being two people we would need the bigger bucket. Thanks for the Love Steve.
Yeah that is the best way to be in vanlife. We have a natures head right now cause it came with our Rv we got but i would go right back to the bucket any day. with a little modifications.
Awesome video. I did a bucket toilet but used an automobile red funnel that drains to a gallon jug inside the bucket (no tubing the jug is tall enough to touch the funnel spout), a bag over the back like yours and a $15 luggable loo toilet seat from walmart snaps on the top . About the same set up, haven't done #2 yet but plan on bagging after each use. I love mine and made it for about $25.
you guys are a nugget (as in GOLD) -- very informative, NO FLUFF, just what I was looking for. I've seen now maybe 50 reviews and videos on compost type toilets (some refer to these as "dry toilets", not to be confused with that model that has dedicated bag system). Some (like Trelino) make "attractive" (if you can juxtapose that word to "toilet") models and they're not grossly pricey and given their engineering I might actually go for one of those models eventually. But when all is said and done, your video highlights the important factors in this system -- 1) that you have used this model/system for 3 years and I see nothing in your video to suggest you'd consider something else (other than portable facilities though even THAT you might think twice about), 2) helpful hints such as using DIRT and some moisture absorbing material rather than dedicated materials (coco coir, etc.), 3) general info on working around the toilet environment so that it assumes center stage only when you need it t-- otherwise out of sight/mind. I will have to see what other videos you have done -- if they're all as good as this one, I'm in for a treat!
This definitely gave me something to think about for my bus conversion! Just worried about how it works when you have your monthly situation as a woman and how that works even if you're using a cup. You'd still have to empty that somewhere. I was heavily thinking about the cassette toilet though because it would just feel more like a real toilet to me. Definitely much to consider here so thank you for the vid!
I use a cup! I try to find public bathrooms whenever possible but in the van it's totally fine too. I empty it into a few pieces of paper towel and put that in the trash then clean it in the sink. I've also dumped it in the pee jug which works too but the color and smell are a bit off putting. So putting it in the trash is a really easy and clean solution. Hope that helps!!
Hilarious as ever!!! Wij did i have to think about you2 nearly soaked the Van????? In the sea... Anyways i have 1 compost toilet in my tiny guesthouse and am going to build one for my own tiny house. Thkx for sharing it was very helpfull
I don't use dirt. There is a product called "Feline Fresh," natural pine pellets that smell awesome no matter what, and instead of a full scoop, you only need about 20 pellets (aka less than a hand full). I buy a 7 lb bag at Walmart that lasts several months for like $3. Awesome video, though; comedy is the only way to present this subject. LOL Well Done!

Cool vid guys. What about the number 1 part? We only see the diverter but where does it go? You have a bottle for this? Does that not smell? And if it goes directly out on the floor? This will smell even more when you stay a few days. And if you simply go after number 1 it will smell for the next van that comes here. I don’t understand this method of direct drain under the van!!
Hey Mitch! we were literally just talking about if we needed to make a whole video about the number 1 part - it's a whole thing haha and the WORST part of living in a van LOL We will absolutely be making a follow-up video with all these questions answered.
Was thinking of converting my marine toilet into a compost toilet. Use it as a bucket by closing valves to stop flushing then line it with plastic bag and compost material. No pee diverter, will use a laundry detergent bottle for pee because of the molded handle, besides I cannot pee sitting down (it is an old man thing). Had picked up a couple Hobo Women hitchhiking and they had a plastic bowl on the outside of their backpack which was their modern day chamber pot. They would line it with plastic bags, do their business in the privacy of their tent, then toss the bag into a dumpster.
Why not! If you don't like it you can always switch it back. Plus if you're lining it with bags, there wouldn't be much mess to clean up anyways. Happy toilet making Mike!
Yes, the poop pot is the way to go. I feel just like you 2 do. Why pay more money for a system that is often more gross than just pooping in a pot? My van builder put in a urine diverting toilet. You can only use the toilet to pee. The good news is, all you have to do is push a button to release the pee. Because urine is sterile, it’s not supposed to be a big deal. However, girls don’t always go in a clean neat stream. And if you don’t you still have to clean the back of the toilet - ever time. 🤢 Yuck, I quickly stopped using this toilet and bought myself a 💩 pot. Although, I do do (haha) things differently. I use cedar chips and separate the urine from the poop. I do pee in a measuring cup (it was the cheapest wide mouth plastic container I could find at Walmart) and I get the added bonus of seeing how much I pee. Too funny. Then I pour it into a gallon jug and empty that in a toilet or in the wild. A ranger told me to pour the urine over a large 🪨 rock. Deer 🦌 love to lick the rock to get the left over salt. Oh, look I am helping animals. I’m going to try dirt instead of cedar chips and see if I like that better. I empty my pot every 2 to 3 days. BTW I just ordered a new pot that collapses so when you store it it’s a lot smaller. I’m buying it off Amazon I think it was 20 bucks. Well this is more information than you probably wanted to know but maybe your viewers would want to know it. Happy trails! 😎🥾🚐
totally mylibertyvan! Some of the fancy expensive ones are literally glorified buckets anyways so what's the big difference! We've heard good things about cedar and will keep an eye out! Must be interesting to measure your pee like that haha like oop I need to drink more water!! lol Thank you for helping the animals!!! LOL xo
Guys, ew, nope. Shelley here, so the bag breaks down in the trash can? I am allergic to moldy soil, worked for compost company, my head plugs right up! I don't know how y'all do it! I struggle with our black tank chores & pooping into no water!🤢💩🤮
F*ck it, use a bucket. I'm thinking cat litter and vermiculite added to the soil might help to quell the smell. Plus, there's a commercial on TV advertising this spray called, ironically, POOPH. They say it instantly kills odors. And even "Oh Dears." Safe for pets, people and the Planet. Having a sense of humor helps too. You two definitely have that shit down pat. 😁👍
We throw it in a trash can. A dumpster or other big enough can we can find. It's not so big when you pull it out even full it's only half a garbage bag.
I have the separett- (1K)- cra cra as a bucket would have sufficed. Venting it is the most difficult issue. I still dispose of me bag about 1x a week. Me and 2 🐱🐱sh$*@^ in the van is a lot of ca ca.
I only ask, as of this year I will retired and looking to emulate your great ever new journey. You guys should publish a book on the how to, “open roads to the unknown”.
I'm from New York, and my wife is from Toronto, Canada. Well, the bucket system is used in many different places around the world. Also, that is what a composting toilet is a bucket that someone designed to look like a toilet.
What happens to the waste? I'm thinking about options to use at home in case of an emergency. I live in the suburbs. If anyone has any advice I'd love to hear them
Brilliant video and wasn't full of sh1t lol 😂🤦🏻 Seriously was a great video. I never heard of anyone having issues with the Cassette toilets if you use the correct 2 chemicals ok me for the holding tank one to flush i think that eliminates any odours. BUT might depend on the make and also if the unit is working correctly as intended I guess (and how often emptied/ventilation climate etc?) ... I guess these can all be a factor in all toilets but flushing port-a-pottie with the two different chemicals and also Thetfords are both suppose to be good I've heard and known people who had them. I've actually got a Port a Pottie one still in the box in my loft lol.. I've had about 5 years but had planned on using that for camping or when I build out a van, but also considering now a LWB high top with a permanent shower and flushing toilet anyway for comfort and living off Grid, so might not be needed. (Always there for any camping trips Inna tent I guess!) Lol.. Tbh I've always been a bit freaked out by the idea of not flushing a toilet/having it just covered over but I'm a bit OCD with things anyway lol 😂🤣🤦🏻 Great video as ALWAYS! Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
I think the flushing thing is because we are used to the flushing of the toilet. It like a person who smokes they are used to the motion of bring the hand to there face. Thank you for all your information this will help others reading the comment section.

Thank you that means a lot to us.
Thanks this is great as I am trying to make one right now
You got this! It's so simple when you go with the bucket 🪣
loved the thumbnail, lol that was great
Hahaha perfection. 💪
Awesome!
Thanks so much Martin!!!
Well done! Wait til you hit your 60s and 70s. You'll be needing it more than twice a day! Maybe you'll be post-van by then. Much love to you.
LOL Susan!!!!! 😆 who knows maybe we'lll be back in a van after having taken some years off. Or maybe we'll be full dirt bags and never leave the van!
@@FnAVanLife it does thank you! 🙏🏽
You two guys make a good couple
That's so sweet of you to say! We agree lol
Hilarious as ever!!!
Wij did i have to think about you2 nearly soaked the Van????? In the sea...
Anyways i have 1 compost toilet in my tiny guesthouse and am going to build one for my own tiny house.
Thkx for sharing it was very helpfull
nice!!! Love a good composting toilet - clearly hahaha
Nice toilet
Thanks Jesus!!!
I wonder if we can find this in Central America. Thank you for the tips as well.
You def need a part 2
Haha you got it!
Very entertaining and informative
That's a fine line!!! Glad to hear we rode it Matthew lol 😆
Y'all are hilarious, but all good to know.
Laughing and learning, the perfect combo 👌
Have to give you a view and a thumbs up becuase of your thumbnail.
Lmao thank you hope you did enjoy the video as well.
You're the third that I follow that the latest video was heavily toilet centric.
So, how do you squat up there to get the best colon alignment?
hahah we are very western in our seating approach
@@FnAVanLife Boooo! Squatting is like magic for pooping!
I have watched this several times and still don't know how/where to get the urine diverter. Please provide the url.

The link for his ebay site.
It is now in the description. Thank you, sorry we missed that.
What about cat litter mix with the compost??
I worry it would smell like a cat box haha I guess we need to try it!
What size bags you use? Where do you get them?
we use regular garbage backs - Frankie says medium lol we try to find the ones that have stretch and no scent.
EF yeah guys! Your skits are great. I want to be in one.
Heck yeah Dave!! That would be awesome!!!!
Hey Mitch! we were literally just talking about if we needed to make a whole video about the number 1 part - it's a whole thing haha and the WORST part of living in a van LOL We will absolutely be making a follow-up video with all these questions answered.
yeah!!! great idea for a toilet!!!!
Heck yeah Jorge!
Shittin on the he bucks 😂
Touchdown! Lol
Would dirt from Real Canadian Superstore be fine? I belive they sell it at the garden centre.
Probably! We like to find a mix with coco coar and peat moss but have used just dirt before too
I assume you've seen Chrome's (Vancity Vanlife) "Of Course Shit in Bucket, I live in a Van!" T-Shirts and Stickers?
Haha smart!!!!!
I guess when people are involved with each other Tinkling and Farting in each other's presences and that much of an issue!
Farting and tinkling are natural so we are ok with that. Alex has grown more ok with it.
Can you put a link for the diverter?
www.etsy.com/listing/844715096/diy-xl-compost-toilet-urine-diverter-and?ref=share_v4_lx definitely splurge for the XL!!!
LOL xo
love Love LOVE
🥰🥰🥰🥰
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I fuckin love you guys.
Thank you for the love. 🥰
I needed this video
Heck yeah glad we could help.
Heck yeah glad we could help.
Guys, ew, nope. Shelley here, so the bag breaks down in the trash can? I am allergic to moldy soil, worked for compost company, my head plugs right up! I don't know how y'all do it! I struggle with our black tank chores & pooping into no water!🤢💩🤮
Everyone is different you have to find what works for you and this works great for us. You got this Shelley!
Yes! Enjoy!😊👍
I wonder if it has to be activated with water? Haha having the shit down pat hahahaha
So where and how do you get rid of that waste bag?
We throw it in a trash can. A dumpster or other big enough can we can find. It's not so big when you pull it out even full it's only half a garbage bag.
I have the separett- (1K)- cra cra as a bucket would have sufficed. Venting it is the most difficult issue. I still dispose of me bag about 1x a week. Me and 2 🐱🐱sh$*@^ in the van is a lot of ca ca.
lmao love this comment. Love the creativity.
Lol...im from Tampa.. 💩 with pride🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 this is perfect!!!
Poor Bucket! Where did you get the urine diverter?
Haha the bucket is happy to have a job and travel the world!!! It's from Etsy. We've pinned the link!
Just curious, how do you guys maintain fitness, wealth, when will the adventure end, and what’s the next chapter?
Great Question Adenturer! We talk a lot more about this on our podcast but it's a journey for sure!
I only ask, as of this year I will retired and looking to emulate your great ever new journey.
You guys should publish a book on the how to, “open roads to the unknown”.
Which state are you from. How did you come up with the idea of pooping in a bucket.
I'm from New York, and my wife is from Toronto, Canada. Well, the bucket system is used in many different places around the world. Also, that is what a composting toilet is a bucket that someone designed to look like a toilet.
Where can you buy that urine diverter?
It should be in the video description. Johnny compost on esty.
It's black bean 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Poop soup lol
@@FnAVanLife I'm still giggling 🤣
Great video! How old is this video? 👍✌️
Brand new pretty much! Maybe a few weeks
What happens to the waste? I'm thinking about options to use at home in case of an emergency. I live in the suburbs. If anyone has any advice I'd love to hear them
You can put the waste in a composed bin. Or you can throw it out like normal garbage.
I don’t think I would be able to go 💩 poopsie in a bucket.
When you gotta go, you gotta go 😅
@@FnAVanLife that’s right.
Brilliant video and wasn't full of sh1t lol 😂🤦🏻
Seriously was a great video.
I never heard of anyone having issues with the Cassette toilets if you use the correct 2 chemicals ok me for the holding tank one to flush i think that eliminates any odours. BUT might depend on the make and also if the unit is working correctly as intended I guess (and how often emptied/ventilation climate etc?)
Tbh I've always been a bit freaked out by the idea of not flushing a toilet/having it just covered over but I'm a bit OCD with things anyway lol 😂🤣🤦🏻
Great video as ALWAYS!
Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
I think the flushing thing is because we are used to the flushing of the toilet. It like a person who smokes they are used to the motion of bring the hand to there face. Thank you for all your information this will help others reading the comment section.
What is DTB?
Direct to Bag 😅😅😅
you guys are funny

Hellz yeah
The boy in the front of the video his pants were down and he was sh*ing
No, I wasn't taking a poop in the video or in the thumbnail. But I have pooped it that bucket/compost system many of times.
