  • In this video, we’ll discuss stereotypes and discrimination based on weight. We’ll define terms such as “lookism” and “weightism,” and we’ll specifically explore how weight-based discrimination affects people in multiple contexts (e.g., in relationships, in school, at work, and in the healthcare system).
The “What Is Beautiful Is Good” Stereotype: Physically-attractive people are rated more favorably than physically-unattractive people, for example on dimensions related to social competence, intelligence, and overall, but not on dimensions related to morality and integrity.
Lookism: The combination of positive stereotypes and preferential treatment given to physically-attractive people (and the opposite for physically-unattractive people).
Anti-Fat Bias: Negative attitude toward, belief about, or behavior against people perceived as being overweight.
Weightism: Discrimination against people because of their weight; the behavioral component of anti-fat bias.
Weightism By Association: Discrimination against a person of normal weight who is associated with someone who is overweight or obese.
Perceived Controllability: Assumptions about who is responsible for the attribute, status, or condition.
