After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

The ending of Bart vs the Space Mountains shows you Mount Rushmore so that gives you four presidents at one time.
Now we’re talking!
Legendary
I applied for NASA once. The application asked if I ever played this game and I checked the "no" box. I never heard back from them.
Hahahaha
I think that some games are made to recruit people intro the government.
Haha
I wanted to go to Nintendo College (Yes, I thought that was an actual thing) I love Space Shuttle project.
Hahaha it should be!
On the initial password entry screen, there was a technique for it that made it easier. The letter, number, shuttle name, etc. that you were supposed to select would come up second. Right as you are allowed to input, the initial digit will switch to a different one, then back to the one you're supposed to pick. Once successful, you wait the same amount of time for the next digit and so forth and the same with the shuttle name. It becomes a little more difficult when you're trying to enter a password to continue where you left of previously, though.
3:56 When my brothers and I played this game, we sometimes joked that Dan Quayle must be in charge of the space program now to explain why the oxygen pumps were designed to block the elevator during the level where you board the shuttle or why they couldn't just get the whole crew on the elevator at once or why they only had seconds to board the shuttle.
Love your channel man, being a salt and peppered man myself I sub to a lot of retro game channels and yours is among the best. Quality content that makes me look at NES games in new ways, Cheers from Kansas City because back in the day on the internet you had to tell everyone where you lived and maybe I had three scotches on a Tuesday.
Haha thanks so much man :)
I received this game as a birthday gift and loved it even though I was not really good in the launch puzzle parts but loved the space station repair and challenges. i'll download this into my Switch to show my 9 yo space loving nephew that No Man's sky has nothing to it 😁
Haha that’s awesome
This looks like a really innovative game, kinda surprised I never heard of it. The graphics look quite good for the NES, especially the animation.
For sure. Certainly a mixed bag entertainment wise, but pretty great in other areas.
Maybe the game being so frustrating and tedious was intentional to test your nerves, patience and resolve in order to become an astronaut. Maybe it was actual astronaut training xD
Haha right? Can’t take the stress of the simulation? Well you’re not ready for space cowboy!
One of my fav NES games and recently found, bought, played, & enjoyed it... then put it on a shelf for months and totally forgot it owned till insaw this vid
Haha dust if off!
Extravehicular is most def the word of the day lol. I think Robocop has a pretty good presidential appearance. You might want to “check that sh*t out”
Oh yeah? I will!
"Extra-vehicular-activities are so slow and awkward"
Yep. Accurate in the simulation department again. All the debris aside, overshooting and flying off is a real danger, only being actually safe because of the tether. Inertia is a bitch.
It definitely feels accurate!
Operation Secret Storm (Color Dreams) has Bush Senior in the instruction manual in glorious cartoon form.
Ooohhh that’s a good one!
Ooh, a games no one played that I actually played! (Via rental, never owned it). Its interesting that its basically just a sequence of mini games... but the end result is a completed space mission.
Ha nice! Yeah it’s exactly that, just mini games sandwiched between longer mini games :)
I loved and played this all of the time as a kid.
Lucky!
Very innovative for a NES game but the best part about it was that it came with an insert for astronaut ice cream.
No it didn’t! That’s wild!
I miss when video game companies would do stuff like this, nowadays you don't even get a kickass instruction manual with cool artwork and shit.
Oh, and this would go perfectly with TMNT 2's free pizza from Pizza Hut
@@HylianFox3 It brought a part of the video game world into the real world for us to experience. It made it more memorable and is why everyone remembers the TMNT 2 coupon.
Looooved this game! Rage quit and obsessed over as a kid
Haha that sounds about right!
Hell yeah! My dad and I beat this back in the day! It was frustrating as hell, but very rewarding. I need to find a copy again.
Nice! The music is sooooo good!
@@BigOleWords it really set the mood so well! It seems like you and I could be some long lost friends, from your MF Doom references to your love for Tim and Eric, and Wonder Showzen. I’m in Memphis, maybe if I’m ever down in ATL we could grab a brew and talk about the past 👍🏻
I think I'd still make this one out to be a underappreciated gem on the NES, though even I'd admit there's still things one would have to put up with quite a but, even when understanding that real life astronaut missions aren't that simple to begin with. Perhaps a prime example of an NES gem that come as an acquired taste if one fully understands what one is getting into beforehand. I would agree that a remake of this game would be welcomed though.
I’d agree with that. I mean I love Solstice but ti recommend it comes with many man caveats. For some people it’s great and for others it never will be :)
Not one I have ever seen before, even at the video stores. But, "Dude, Thanks for letting me know let's go for a burger Ha.. Ha..."
Sadly the Space Shuttle president had no such awesome dialogue :(
I played this one. I was used to Contra and Mega Man so I didn't play it very long. For some reason it reminded me of silent service at the time
I can see that!
The Quayle joke is funnier when written- though it is still funny that Mr. Potatoe Head himself is sorta-kinda in this game.
I wonder if this is his ONLY video game cameo- but, I suppose that isn't that suprising, given that he's no Jack Kennedy.
😅
I assume it is, but then again you don’t see a lot of actual presidents show up in video games
I played this all the time as a kid. Never actually beat it, but I loved it, especially since it has one of the best NES soundtracks IMO
The music is pretty jamming!
Excellent review as always, my dude
Thanks player!
Awesome review as always, and loved the back story 😎
Thanks bud :)
It definitely was an ambitious game for the time, but most kids didn't have the patience for Sims like this. I bet there were a lot of parents that might have enjoyed it more if they could ever put down the Tetris crack-pipe.
Haha or it’s meth equivalent Dr Mario.
best NES channel out there and there are a fucking ton of em
Hey thanks so much!
I like this game!
I also have it for the Atari with the console overlay that makes it look like a control board haha, good times.
Whoa really?! Neat!
Are you sure that's not Activision's Space Shuttle: A Journey Into Space that you're thinking of? The Activision game is more of a simulator than the game covered in this video.
@@KasumiKenshirou exactly! It's the same game
This is one those random affordable nes games I have never seen in person. It looks interesting.
For what it is, it’s definitely pretty interesting!
I have never even heard of this one and I'm moderately well versed. Looks very interesting at least, and with a rockin soundtrack that's sometimes all you need! Thrillhouse loving this game instead of Martin going to space camp. I feel like there are other presidents in games, but I might be thinking of Rodney from skate or die...who gets no respect. Big Bird ran for president once, no joke!
If only he were president in one of the 5 Sesame Street NES games!
Out of sheer boredom, i just played through the counts game and my God does it seem long as all hell. Decent end screen though, kinda a preschool castlevania vibe 😄
I played this game as a 7 year old and had absolutely no clue what was going on.
I wanted to be an astronaut from pre school till college. That's when I flunked out of the sciences and discovered that I wasn't smart enough to be an astronaut. I even cut gym so I could spend more time studying physics. Wasn't enough to pass
But how much time did you devote to your Space Shuttle Project studies?!
@@BigOleWords i bought a copy of the shuttle operations manual. I wonder whatever happened to it
I played this game when I was younger once
Lucky child!
I didn’t play it to long I don’t think I got passed the launch pad
I'm not sure if it's better for it or not but the Atari 2600 game "Space Shuttle: A Journey into Space" by Activision didn't have golf like meters or mini games 😂
Interesting!
I didn’t know about the space walk stages. I’ve Never got the first mission off the ground!🤣 Is Lincoln anywhere in North & South?
Hmmm I don’t think so but now I’m gonna check!
I had this game, it's like a B+ in rarity, one of the rarest I own(ed). Micro Machines I still have, box and instructions. Plus Quattro Adventure. I only got to the 2nd or 3rd screens in this game, barely made it to space.
Did not know it had any rarity! That’s definitely a random collection of games :)
@@BigOleWords There are lists online if you do a search for it i think. Those were my 3 rarest (well still have 2). I'm still kicking myself for selling Panic Restaurant though 😮
Thanks for the great vid! I am not sure if this counts but what about America Daitōryō Senkyo? It is a US presidential simulation game for the famicom/nes based on the 1988 presidential election in the US.
The Famicom never ceases to amaze me. How is that a game?!? It counts for sure :)
Welcome Thrillho!
There ya go: Top 10 politicians (real or fictional) in NES Games. lol
My vote is for Mayor Haggar from Final Fight
He was mayor in Mighty Final Fight!
Hitler takes the cake in Bionic Commando.
Does Arnold Schwarzenegger count? 🤔
Damn I would have probably been all about this when I was 9
I was all about watching someone else play it at 9!
I remember when I see this like 8 years ago when I was learning as much as I could about the nes. I got it for 25 and was like wtf did I buy
Ooof you might’ve over paid there depending on how much you enjoyed it!
crap, i was hoping this ended with your friend being a real astronaut
Not yet at least! He is a scientist so I guess it’s still a possibility!
@@BigOleWords hope he gets to go to space
This looks like a cool game !!!
It is in its own weird way!
How much blood in your stool is TOO much? Inquiring minds want to know.
That is an important question for an astronaut!
Love your channel. After years of watching AVGN, it is nice to hear positive reviews of sh#tty games. Ever think of doing a colab video with him?
I don’t know if the World could handle that much James!
If your friend actually became an astronaut from playing this game I’m super angry that I didn’t spend my time better playing a game that would make me a well kept trophy wife.
I guess bubble bath babes look like they had a pretty lax life but I have no idea where that life lead…..
I don’t like pool water up my nose and I doubt I’d like snorting anything because let’s face it….that’s where they are now.
Cool shirt!
Hahaha
Hmmm...I am wondering, was this officially licensed? Was this by a well-known developer?
Yes it was. And Imageneering made a ton of kinda crappy NES games like all the Simpsons titles :)
Looks cool. To bad gameplay is not any better.
I actually played the crap out of Space Shuttle Project
Nice!
I've been looking for a decent ROM of this game to put on my NES mini because I really do want to play this game, but it seems like every one I've tried is bugged in some way, mostly with a glitched-out title screen and other glitchy graphic image stills which make certain screens unreadable. Anyone by chance know of a good place to get a ROM of this game that's in excellent shape?
I think it might be a problem with the emulator rather than the ROM. I used to see the same issue you're describing years ago when trying to play the game on an EverDrive, but I think later firmware updates fixed it. I would advise trying out the ROMs you already have on a few different PC emulators to see if it works on any of them.
I played this for the first time in like 20 years yesterday and got 1 whole stage farther then I did back then. shit just keeps hitting the Satellite I put out and I don't know what to do.
That section makes no sense. You have to time it perfectly so it sits at the top for like three seconds and then it opens.
@@BigOleWords Yeah I wound up here because I was trying to figure out what the fuck to do
4:15 There is the obvious Socks the cat rocks the hill
Haha 16 bit?! Get out of here! ;)
@@BigOleWords Whoops I missed the NES bit. I got nothing.
@@goatbone Naw Socks is a good one. It's slim pickings out here!
It will be cool to see hack of that game with the Soviet space carft Buran :D BTW there is an Atari 2600 space shuttle simulator as well and it looks better then this in my book :D
Had no idea!
US Presidents in NES games, hmm...
Well, there's this game
Bad Dudes
Power Blade 2 (he's spoken to by the Delta Foundation's CEO but not actually seen)
I think The Lone Ranger has you rescue the president from Butch Cavendish in the final area, but I'm not 100% sure (EDIT: you do rescue the president at the end of the game. The Lone Ranger sure is one Bad Dude!)
There's also a Famicom game that's a presidential election sim
Pretty sure Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure has a president as one of the 'historical dudes' you need to get back to their proper era, again not 100% sure because that game sucked (EDIT: George Washington is indeed in the game)
Gotta look into this all proper. It really is a great subject for a list.
That’s awesome! I was thinking real presidents, but that’s great info!
Also, Mario’s Time Machine has Lincoln. That’s three including Bush and Washington!
I honestly thought the reason for nobody playing the game being due to the memories of the Challenger explosion.
Yeah I guess it was only 5 years later…
what an odd concept for an NES Game.
You mean and AMAZING concept for an NES game ;)
You mean thrillhouse lol
THRILLHO
@@BigOleWords lol only cause the game didn't give him enuff spaces😅
ya i actually thought it was a decent game. Very different game than most. It would have been a decent rental back in the day
I am very interested in seeing a video about presidents in nes games
Haha well I’ve only got a few on my list so far. Need more stat!
This one IS one I never played, despite digging pretty deep into the NES library back in the day. Just zero interest in the whole thing.
If you've tried the best, time to try the rest ;)
There's a Famicom game called "America Daitōryō Senkyo" about the 1988 presidential race. It was bizarrely the first weird import only game I became aware of via a one panel blurb in NP back in the day.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_Dait%C5%8Dry%C5%8D_Senkyo
That's amazing, I've never heard of this!
@@BigOleWords On a similar, strange old-school political note.. also check out "Gorby no Pipeline Daisakusen". It's kind of like Pipe Dream with Mikhail Gorbachev as a mascot lol. Famicom is full of random wtf games. Love your channel, keep it growin.
This game is strangely engaging. It sounds like a total bore, and the game play is just 'meh.' Still, I kept pushing through each mini game.
Haha yeah that's how I felt about it too!
Wow I thought I knew my NES, but I never heard of this one, ever. It looks pretty cool? Only US-release? /your biggest swedish fan
I believe it is one of the odd North American exclusives :)
