This area recovered rather quickly, having some concrete buildings that were not destroyed by fire. The newer cars look late 40-ish. There is an American-looking soldier, etc. There are many still photographs from this era and area that look great, as though there never was a war.

@array s The film was most definitely restored, there's no doubt about that. However, the original film had to have been in very good condition. All restoration does is clean up the film so it looks as good or close to how it originally looked. If this film was shown in theatres back in the 40's, this is how it would have looked, probably even better. Film has insane quality to it. Many old films are being scanned in 4K because that's how much detail and information can be pulled from 35 mm film.
The WWII really damaged Japan economically as the rest of the world. Many of the items were very limited in supply, therefore lots of "black market" vendors popped up, especially with U.S. food items. Japan was already quite prosperous before the war, but right after, they were in deep trouble but recovered quickly later due to hard working and dedicated citizens willing to improve their living standard.

Looking at the street signs, we can see that the clip was shot in Shibuya, with signs for 道玄坂百貨街 (“Dogenzaka Department Store”) and カワシマ帽子店 (“Kawashima Hat Store”) revealing this was taken in the Dogenzaka area, specifically where Shibuya Prime stands today, next to the famous 109 building.
I am from Tokyo and can catch the location. 1. Near Shinbashi station, not far from Ginza, Sotobori-Dori Avenue. 2. Shibuya, Dogenzaka slope. Anyway I am surprised at the quality of this film. The film was possibly taken in 1946-50, during the period of U.S. occupation.

My first car at 4:20. A '49 Willys wagon. (I got mine in 1970). I'm assuming this is very later 40's cause I don't think those were made much earlier than that, and all the jeeps around as well. If you watch the 1929 Kyoto sound footage, you have to wonder how those people could even wage war by 1941, because there are NO motor cars anywhere even.

The film was taken around the Shinbashi area, in which you can see a Yamanote line passing through on the elevated rail way.Since Shinbashi was in the middle of CBD, most of the people appeared in the scene seemed to be office workers or government officials, who were relatively well off even though during the tough economic times. Scene No.3 was in Shibuya.
Thank you for this information. On numerous business trips to Tokyo, I stayed in the Dai Ichi hotel in Shimbashi. What a treat to see this footage. I wonder whether it was taken during the war, and what it looked like when the war ended.
From around 1950. There are American cars and US military vehicles on the streets. Also, the streets have been paved, and the street car rails installed. In 1945, there were few operable vehicles left, as all manufacturing was toward the war effort, and there were no parts being produced, or fuel available. The street looks like it may be in the Yurakucho/Shimbashi area of Tokyo, in the distance you can see the tracks on which the Yamanote and Kehintohoku lines run on today.

私はなぜあんな怖そうな人にお金をあげるのだろうと不思議でした。

そんなことより今から行く洋食屋が楽しみでなりませんでした。

0:00～1：45と3：02～は外堀通り新橋駅～内幸町付近で撮影しているようですね。3：25あたりから新橋第一ホテルが写っていて、4：37あたりで都電6系統（渋谷駅前→新橋）が写っているのでそうだと思います。1:48あたりからの映像は道玄坂周辺だと思います。右奥に東横百貨店らしい建物が写っています。米軍車両が写っているので戦後占領期の映像だと思います。
同じ通りを道路の反対側からも撮影しているところが面白く思いました。私も軍服姿の米兵が写っているのを見て1940年代後半の戦後の撮影だと思いました。
歩道に地下鉄銀座線の排気穴と思われるグレーチング(網目模様の蓋)が写っていました。歩道の石畳が綺麗でした。

終戦後の映像ですね。映像中に米兵が映っていましたし、ほとんどの看板などが、左から右へと書かれています。40年代のいつ頃なのでしょうか。これは男女並んで歩いているところを真ん中を分けて人がすすみ、その後の様子などを見ると、演出がされているのかなとも思います。

後ろに見える高架橋を走っている電車は地下鉄丸の内線と思われます。だとすると地上高架部分は限られていますので、撮影場所は特定できる可能性が有りますが、もう二つ三つ手掛かりがないと正確な特定は難しいと思われます。地下鉄丸の内線の施工工程に詳しくは有りませんが高架橋部分を先に建設した可能性が有ります。私が知っている地下鉄丸ノ内線の建設過程の唯一の話は、当時、日本を支配していた占領軍のGHQに地下鉄丸ノ内線の建設許可を申請した時のGHQの回答が「敗戦国が地下鉄を建設するとは生意気だ」と言うもので、許可が下りなかったそうです。下記にある古本さんの話が正解ではないでしょうか、画質が白黒ですがあまりにも鮮明です。８ミリではなく１６ミリフィルムかそれ以上だとするアメリカの映画会社のロケハン参考映像だと納得がいきます。流石に戦後３年では日本の映画会社も映画製作はしていますが、貴重なフィルムをロケハンに使用しないのではないでしょうか？この映像で場所が特定できるのはフィルム③の中に出てくる看板に「道玄坂百貨街」と在りますので渋谷と思われます。
ただの新橋の国電ガードのところですよ。田村町です。今と構造は変わってません。

タイトルのJapan 1940's in HDとなっておりますが、厳密には1940年代のぎりぎり後半～1950年代の映像ではないでしょうか。終戦で焼け野原となった東京も朝鮮戦争の軍需景気で急速に経済が立て直り、映像の新橋外堀通りの賑わいにも敗戦を忘れるほどの復興状況がよく現れております。ただ随所にGHQの姿が写っており敗戦を裏付ける程度でしょうか。

それにしても、高い建物が殆ど無い！1940年代末か1950年代初頭でしょうね。
The film was taken around the Shinbashi area, in which you can see a Yamanote line passing through on the elevated rail way.Since Shinbashi was in the middle of CBD, most of the people appeared in the scene seemed to be office workers or government officials, who were relatively well off even though during the tough economic times. Scene No.3 was in Shibuya.
Thank you for this information. On numerous business trips to Tokyo, I stayed in the Dai Ichi hotel in Shimbashi. What a treat to see this footage. I wonder whether it was taken during the war, and what it looked like when the war ended.

From around 1950. There are American cars and US military vehicles on the streets. Also, the streets have been paved, and the street car rails installed. In 1945, there were few operable vehicles left, as all manufacturing was toward the war effort, and there were no parts being produced, or fuel available. The street looks like it may be in the Yurakucho/Shimbashi area of Tokyo, in the distance you can see the tracks on which the Yamanote and Kehintohoku lines run on today.
