Unique meeting of four music ensembles resulted in a wonderful acoustic recording based on traditional songs of Moravia. Album Beránci a vlci (Lambs and Wolves) follows the vision of
Moravian world music like rivers that constantly and with continual change roll through countryside, from which they gather their strength from many sources. This vision has its origins in a concert titled Z kořenů k world music (From the Roots to World Music) which took place at the festival Folkové prázdniny in 2014.
Musician and composer Marian Friedl describes album Beránci a vlci. Two forms of contemporary folklore are represented by Ženský sbor z Kudlovic: a women’s choir from Slovácko (Moravian Slovakia), and RukyNaDudy from Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, a band focusing on archaic musical instruments and playing styles from Beskydy. These two formations are complemented by jazz musicians with a close relationship to folklore and seekers of borderless genres from the trio Jitka Šuranská.
The theme of the album Beránci a vlci is about wandering across the borderlands, a liminal space where one penetrates the other. The accuracy of borders between now and then, life and death, rams and wolves, happy and sad, positive and negative, disappears. Despite being surrounded by omnipresent borders defining black and white, as soon as we get closer to the interface of two opposites, we find out that the world here is much more colourful than we expected.
Congratulations to Indies Records on landing an Angel Award (cena Anděl) in the 2017
Folk category with the Moravian folk-jazz project Beránci a vlci ('Rams and Wolves') on 20 March 2018. Richly deserved.
