The very best part of BAND-MAID’s exceptional music is the “twin vocal concept” comprising KOBATO and SAIKI.

There is a song that has bluesy rock and controlled chaos in one song. When I first heard BAND-MAID's Different, it felt like a new kind of hard rock that I had never heard before. The five members do completely different things, but they harmonize without interfering with each other.

Blues rock straight to speed metal, really shows Band-Maid's versatility! Band-Maid is their own genre!

So much talent, and stretches so many genres of music. I've seen them twice in concert now and will try to see them everytime they are near.

It's interesting the the reviewers that are musicians really enjoy Manners !!!!! It's got a real bluesy feel to it and is great song. The team vocals are some of the best vocal performances of Saiki and Miku !!!!!

There is an interesting story behind "Black Hole". According to Akane, Kanami asked her how fast she could drum. Akane said around 190 bpm. Then Kanami went off and wrote "Black Hole" that peaks at 220 bpm! So Akane goes and writes the drum patterns for the track. She wrote 7, for the band to choose which one. She labelled them:
    1. Easy
    2. Comfortable
    3. Normal
    4. Possible if I work hard
    5. Tough
    6. Painfull
    7. Hell
Akane said "Of course, the band chose Hell"!

Wonderful reaction. It’s so refreshing to listen to someone who recognizes the subtle details of their composition genius and their over the top musicianship. No wonder you listen to Jazz too. I‘m coming from the Jazz side, I got my musical education in a renowned Jazz school. I was hooked by Band-Maid right away. The way the musical brain of Kanami works and her approach to compose a song reminds me much more of a Jazz Group or a classical quintet than the usual garage rock approach. Band-Maid is one of the most interesting rock bands actual, unmatched among most other rock bands IMHO and my favorite since 9 years 😊

A band whose effect is exactly what they sing about here in the second song. ❤‍🔥🤘🏻
The ladies still say it best in the first song. 👇🏻 :) Greetings from Germany.

I've seen these ladies twice live now....they don't disappoint on any aspect of their songs. Talent in every position. Their music is just so active and engages your auditory senses to a much higher degree than most.

Well said, “Their music is just so active and engages you auditory senses to a much higher degree…”. Our Maids Do Not cut and paste. They appreciate and love their Masters and Princesses (i.e. fans) so they develop their music for all to appreciate (over multiple plays so that more gems can be discovered and not be bored).

Lots of great bands out there. Creative songwriters. Great technicians. Chsrismstic performers.Dilligent players who work to bring the best out of the tune, themselves and each other. Then there's BandMaid. They're not just an ordinary band. Excelsior should be there motto.

Great reaction and since discovering Band-Maid, I've asked doctors if I could get three additional ears installed as I can't keep up with all the different parts. I've found that I need at least 5 listens to a new song just to focus on each instrument. I like to think of these two songs a bookends to Band-Maid music; groove based blues to chaotic progressive speed rock/metal. Thanks for your reaction to Band-Maid.

Manners - MISA taking a leisurely stroll around the fretboard.
Black Hole - "Beautiful Chaos" What a perfect description for an amazing song.
Two songs from opposite ends of the Rock music spectrum. Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things.
    Thanks for the reactions!

I am going to post parts of several info files, I hope YT lets this go through.
"About the bass forward sound of Band-Maid
When the band started, Miku the founder and singer, could not play guitar. Their management wanted a second guitar for "Optics". They didn't want to add another member to the band, and Saiki the new Co-Lead singer refused to carry a guitar. So Miku said that she would do it. At first all she did was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane told her of she was going to hold it she needed to learn how to play it. So Kanami the lead guitarist started to teach her how to play.
The problem was, she wasn't good enough at the time to fill in the music where the rhythm guitar is supposed to be. So MISA the bassist was asked to step up and fill in that part of the music. While normally the bass would be tied in with drums, MISA was now free to become a Lead Instrument. While Miku would fill in the bass parts, tying in to the drums. And for awhile, that was how it left. However, Miku was forced by Kanami to become a GOOD rhythm guitarist. Not by actually making her do things, merely by setting an example. Kanami constantly practices and is always trying to learn new techniques, just like MISA and Akane do. So Miku couldn't say that it was too hard. So she applied herself, and has become a very accomplished rhythm guitarist. Today, she does some lead riffs, that were originally done by Kanami, so that Kanami can add more embellishments to their music.
But even now. MISA and her bass forward playing has become a central part of the Band Maid Sound. So I doubt they ever change it."
    Next file, about Akane and her drum patterns in Black Hole;
May 2021 Player Magazine Interview with Akane
    - This time the last song BLACK HOLE had a great impact. In your previous album, Rinne was awesome, though…
Akane: I felt like “Finally this came!” (laughs)
    - Finally you played this. I wonder what you will do in the future…
    Akane: I wonder too (laughs).
    - Was it originally like this in the demo?
Akane: Yes. I had to keep kicking (the bass drum) longer, but it had many parts a human can’t play, so I modified it within the range of a human drummer, and it’s still like this. As for the last bass drum pattern, I made seven or eight patterns, and they were like “Names like ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ are not easy to get, so name them according to your level”, so I actually named them like “Easy, Comfortable, Normal, Possible if I work hard, Tough, Painful, Hell”, and they chose “Hell” (laughs). It’s the phrase named “Hell”.
    - (laughs) However, didn’t you expect them to definitely choose “Hell”?
Akane: Yes, I expected. I was prepared for it. I was sure they wouldn’t choose “Easy”.
Next file, about Miku and Saiki's voices, and Miku and Saiki are Co-Lead vocalists. Saiki is the primary lead, Miku the secondary lead, Kanami is the backing singer.
"Miku the Secondary Lead Vocalist is a Mezzo-Soprano, meaning she can sing lower and higher than Saiki the Primary Lead Vocalist, who is a Contralto/Alto. However Miku doesn't have the same vocal power that Saiki does. I have two different analogies explaining it. The first is audiophile: Miku only has a pre-amp installed, while Saiki has has the pre-amp and amplifier installed. The second is the hose: Take a hose with a screw nozzle, open it up so it covers the largest area, it doesn't spray very far or hard, that is Miku's voice. Tighten up the nozzle and now it can go very far with much more power, but it doesn't cover as wide an area, that is Saiki's voice."
I and others would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, so please feel free to ask away.

Without diminishing the input of the other band members, it starts with composer and lead guitarist Kanami. She started on piano as a child and apparently concentrated on classical music until her high school years. The beauty of her compositions are highlighted by a series of cello covers by Alexej Bagrintsev.

Always great to get a classical perspective on Band-Maid, especially your remarks about hearing the different parts and how they fit together to make up the whole. Exactly the way you would hope a good quintet would be written and performed!

Two very different and very complex compositions from Kanami. Everyone gets to shine but the parts always remain an integral part of the whole. I rate Kanami's compositional skill up there with Mozart...though I prefer her works for quartets and quintets.

From what I have read in comments, Kanami asked Akane what her fastest BPM was, and Akane said 190 BPM. So Kanami said I'm writing a song for 220 BPM, so deal with it, lol.

OK - I hear from the comments that you did take my advice on the groovy song and the chaos song.
Yeah, this is one of my favorite music videos on UA-cam. This version of manners is easy to love. BASS!
I have to admit though that I had to listen to Black Hole several times. And doing so have expanded my music taste.
It is very complex. As you say, they all play their own stuff. But still, they harmonize and it is one song.
And Miku really do two things. As far as I can hear, her singing and her guitar playing are not in sync. Or maybe I am wrong?
It is, of course, Kanami that has written this. She has composer frenzy and write music 24/7. Its her life.
