  • I know I have some strong opinions, am I a dinosaur? Maybe I am, it's all sort of the product of what we grew up with in a way I think and what we're comfortable with. The right to repair the thing I own, and the ability to do so without being hamstrung by discontinued parts etc is very important to me, and I think that's where a lot of it comes from.

After watching your review of the Aprilia Falco, I bought one. It has no technology except the digital speedo which is annoying to an extent but I don't really care. The bit of technology it has which I couldn't do without is the big ass v-twin, that thing's advanced enough for me.
I do take me phone with me but that is switched off and under the seat.
The fuel light, I find the fuel light handy.
And the headlights, they're handy too for seeing where I'm going at night.
Got a feeling I might be a dinosaur.

Tech is cool, when it's useful and/or needed. I do think I'm a dinosaur though. My bike is stock, year 2000 gsx600f. I realised I do have additional tech for the bike - charger lead, usb port, UA stem mount and phone case (satnav), drift xl (as helmet "dashcam"), sena for chat to riding buddy. I don't feel the need for anything more though. I'm old (65) and only ride for pleasure (pleasure is a massive understatement!!!!) so my needs/choices are probably not relevant to a daily rider. I'm always open to new ideas, etc, but just love the raw feel of connection to the machine. Great vid, Cheers, Andy.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  7 місяців тому

All of those things aren't really tech ON the bike if that makes sense, it's all ease of life stuff for keeping your phone alive, sena for comms etc. Comms is a big thing for me, even just safety wise they're great to warn people you're riding with of stuff.
Haha mega pleasure :P Now it sounds dirty :D I would disagree, daily riders a lot of the time want/need the same stuff, the only things I'd add are dashcam hard mounted and bags. Thanks Andy, and keep enjoying that bike :)

I'm old enough to remember when bikes were simpler and I am also old enough to remember the fact that it was a big deal to ride a bike from the UK to France and today I would happily ride either of my bikes across Europe with nothing more than checking the fluids and tyre pressures so they are definitely more reliable but I am with you on the tech front. I get why some people like it but, for me, riding a bike is an escape and I like the analogue experience that you get with less tech. I find that a lot of tech just distracts me from the act of riding or makes the experience more remote and if I want that I'll jump in the car. I am a dinosaur no question but I'm perfectly happy to be a dinosaur.

Yeah bikes from the 70s and 80s(which I adore) definitely all had their "character". That said I think late 90s on, at least anything I've ever had my hands on, are bulletproof too. I do find it mad when people call modern bikes unreliable tho.
Exactly, definitely a lot of it can numb you to the experience of actually riding the bike. Cars for me are just coffee and spotify machines. That's honestly the only pluses I see to most of them now :D Dinosaurs are cool to be fair

In 2020, I bought a brand new BMW GSA. It's got every option you can ask for. I also have my 2014 Road King. I love the simplicity of the Harley, It really doesn't do anything very well but makes me smile when I ride it. If I plan a trip, I usually pull out a paper map where you can actually see those hidden back roads you would never even consider or be shown by your GPS.
You said the only time you've activated ABS is when you did it on purpose. Its because you know how to ride and understand threashold braking. ABS has saved many people though when in a bad situation.
Yeah, the less tech, the better. Oh, the can't live without is definately Cruise Control. Didn't know how much I appreciate it now that its on both my bikes. definetly a big plus on the long haul.

    • @TheGorillaBiker

There's nothing like the visceral feel of a noisy, clackety bike :D I still have maps, I love maps, but I often just take roads that look nice these days and know GPS will put me right when I'm done exploring. I've found some really nice roads that way.
Track riding helps that immensely tbh, I do feel everyone should do 1 track day ever, you learn a huge amount. It has for sure, I don't dislike ABS or anything, I just don't personally care if I have it or not, there aren't many techs on bikes now that aren't objectively good.
Haha I'm afraid to ever have cruise control tbh :D I might fall in love.

If you think you're a dinosaur, I definitely am at nearly 60. I looked at the new GS at the NEC show and there were layers and sub layers to the menu. Honestly it puts me off as well as making the new bikes expensive. Keep the bike out of warranty and are these bikes fixable at home???
What do I want keyless for?
Trouble is now, if you're looking for a reasonably powerful bike, you can't buy a bike without all the tech.
We're still using 12 year old Garmin 660 navs. Still work fine.
(We used my van to get our bikes to the French Alps last summer. Van/ truck has it's place)

Haha I did say in my brain :P Altho my knees feel prehistoric a lot of the time too. Age is but a number as they say :)
Yeah the amount of options on bmw displays now is literally insane, I'm glad they make it all available and all and don't hide it from the owner behind maintenance mode walls etc. That'd be my issue tbh, I've dealt with modern cars and they can be a bloody nightmare. 150 possible causes of a code etc.
Keyless I've used in rental cars and it's a gimmick imo, it's fine but I really wouldn't miss it.
That's a very fair point, even the newest Vstrom is getting very busy with extra bits. TFT displays is another thing for me, if they break or crack etc you have to replace the whole unit.
I'll have to look at a Garmin nav then, thank you :)
Yeah there certainly is, I'd really like to grab a long bed truck or van over here. We'll see!

Consumerism. The British bike industry collapsed in part due to their unwillingness to change and innovate. The Japanese trained us to expect new, bigger, and better every year. The computer industry and the phone industry has taken this even further. As you say motorbikes are perfect, reliable, great brakes, great handling, great suspension, reliable electrics. In reality there are no bad bikes. So what can manufacturers entice us with? What can the UA-cam review industry talk about or nit pick about? They spend a lot of time reviewing all the infotainment, communication, integration, gadgetry, and how big the colour TFT is. I am happy to join you in the Jurassic. I don't want any of it. Don't need any of it. Here in Surabaya I use Google maps if I don't know how to get somewhere as there is no good AtoZ.. I keep the phone in my pocket. I stop, yes, I stop and check it from time to time, and yes I have to turn around, or amend my route but that doesn't matter. Remember the dinosaurs were here for millions of years longer than man or electronics. Good video. 👍

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  7 місяців тому +1

Same as big companies, have to have that year on year growth eh!! Phones are also mad, I like phones but my one is ancient tech at this point, I paid cash for it 3+ years ago and have had literally no issues, same as my PC, built it myself for editing, it's slower but does the job :)
There really are no bad bikes anymore. Hahaha yeah I generally skip any review section for infotainment, I've literally never cared for it, it makes no difference once you're actually riding the bike eh. Jurassic park always looked fun anyway :D
If I'm not on a timeline I never use google, only if I have limited time will I get it out. They were also much much cooler than electronics, but I'm not so that one doesn't count :P Thanks!

Quite a few times I asked myself this question as well. I was always happy with technology, but lately, I'm a bit adverse to it most of the time. But I think it's my engineer mindset that doesn't like the way the technology went, more than being a dinosaur itself.
I love automation in example, but I hate most of the new automation, that requires even a light bulb to talk with an API in china, and the manufacturer might shutdown that at any moment and you end up with an overpriced bulb with a security exposure. So, basically I don't like over complication, I don't know if you are familiar with, but I love Slackware, the simplest Linux distro, with it's main philosophy, K.I.S.S. BTW: the remote service to control automation is the cheapest, development-wise technology, because you don't need th efficiency or reliability of the embedded automation.
Coming back to the bikes, tracktion control and ABS are great, also EFI (most of the time), quite reliable. The electronics that go wrong, are usually more complicated software that goes over layers of operative system and when the electronics and software interact with mechanical automation, like electronic suspension, moving screens, dashboards that are drawn (I hate the complication of drawing the controls when you can just have a component that represents the movement with a gauge).
Also, I like to evaluate what is the bike for, let's say you build the comfiest tourer for europe, the Goldwing, BMW RT or GT, etc, I think all the electronics make sense. but then, you have a bike that the spirit is to go around the world, and you add cruise control with radar, electronic suspension, motorised centre stand (talking about the GS), I feel like they lost the essence, I want a bike that I can fix in Mongolia, otherwise I would buy an RT or a S1000XR that is the sport tourer. But the new GS with all the electronics is closer to a XR than to it's own family model target.
Sorry for the long rant, just wanted to give an example. but at the end of the day, I do enjoy more working on older staff, even if it fails more, gives me more control.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  7 місяців тому

It's definitely part of my engineer stuff that I look at these things and think "I would never have risked that". But that's part of everything automotive these days, they do seem to use customers as Beta testers without any long term road based reliability tests. Or maybe they do and just don't release the data.
Happily the automation I work with is all large industrial stuff, Kuka robots and the likes :) That's still fun and doesn't require updates etc once you have it locked down. But also yes, it's what I'd be nervous about buying a Tesla, they give you a "driver score" and everything which can affect your insurance. I hate that stuff. I bought it and own it don't monitor me.
I haven't used linux in a while, at least not updated I should say. I still use an old distro of Ubuntu for some stuff. I'll try it!
ABS is fine, it's a legal requirement for most stuff now in the EU so not like it's worth complaining about, I would like to see a cost breakdown of how much extra ABS and traction add to a bike. EFI is honestly great, very easy for the average person. I love carbs but they are definitely more work.
Couldn't agree more on the screens, I personally prefer how analog gauges look, but they also won't brick the bike if they break and can take a lot more abuse and are much easier to replace. Same with a cable operated throttle, throttle by wire has it's benefits but it's just not as robust as a cable.
That's a very fair point, and I think I always come from a point of bias, unless I'm doing a review then I try to think broader, but for these videos it's definitely my POV and for me it has to be reliable, easy to fix and yes, I want my bikes to be able to be fixed anywhere without needed to be towed or have specialist tools etc. Fair point on the GS, I think that's because they aim for the 98% who don't go around the world on them. Good point tho and not one I'd thought of that they've really gone from the original purpose of a GS.
Rant away!! :) And yes, having control for myself to fix something or just keep it running is critical for me.

@@TheGorillaBiker Pretty cool stuff you work on :).
I use to like the idea of the Teslas, but more I know them, more they look like a leased appliance, that is very expensive. Outside of the downsides of electrics in terms of practicality, I think the same, I want to own what I pay, I don't like the idea of paying for stuff that I don't own or will judge me. The onboard microphone and camera of the teslas streaming everything is shite. Let me run my own risks. But I think it's the tendency of new cars, not just electrics.
I had a r1200GS aircooled, before having the LC (2013) and I had engineering peaks of pleasure, when I had to change a bulb and could do it with a screwdriver or just twisting the support in the back of the front lamp, without doing mayor stuff, then just buying a new bulb in any auto parts for 2 euros or less. Led is supposed to be so simple and reliable, I recall building circuits, a led would never burn, but the led bulbs and lamps are made in a way that fail. There is a lot of technology in them, but then, they made leds obsolescent, haaha.

Eh...occasionally , most of the time it's soul destroying as per most jobs.
Cost per mile wise they look like a great investment, but insurance is more and the monitoring thing really bothers me. It shouldn't, if I'm in a car I drive like a retired person. They're basically boredom a to b machines to listen to music in for me :D But I just hate that nanny style stuff.

I think the motorcycle industry today has gone overboard, with all this over the top tech on bikes today. I think apart from basic ABS (not cornering ABS) there really hasn't been anything that really needs to be added to an bike. I'd like to think I'm a luddite but in reality, there's a lot of modern technology I enjoy; tunable fuel injection, cruise control, phone Bluetooth that can connect to devices like navigation...I love the new Navigation screen on 24 Harleys, but not enough to pay for it. I plan on adding a bigger, cheap Android pad hotspotted from my phone for navigation on long trips. (Android pads are cheap by comparison to iPads) I don't need a stereo system because I'm an old guy that listens to podcast through my intercom system. BUT I got along for years with motorcycles that didn't even have speedometers before the years of cell phones and I somehow managed. I'll admit I like the luxuries of modern vehicles...

The rider aids like ABS and traction control generally don't bother me, since I seldom butt up against them. Not having a fuel gauge doesn't bother me one bit. Gear indicator can be nice, as my brain is hard-wired to 5 forward gears, and refuses to adapt to 6. It's the smaller things that disappoint me, like clocks that can't be hidden or turned off, so you always see what time it is. Placing full LCD or TFT dashes on bike that they don't aesthetically fit with. When you've got so many menus, you have to add some kind of navigation toggle to the handlebar controls. And your perfect example (which isn't a small issue at all), of software dependent tech that stops being supported. Yep software obsolescence is ALWAYS an issue nowadays, same as my computer. Functionally fine but it's getting slower mainly due to software and my GPU not being fully supported any more for premiere pro.
They'll be happy out with them 20 years from now still!

I don’t like tech either I had a 17 plate Africa twin dct I only went for the dct because it came up second hand at a really good price. It was a good bike I just couldn’t get away with an automatic. To answer your question on what tech I couldn’t live without that would have to be wheels. On another subject ! Do you miss your cbf1000 I’ve been rewatching your old films 😂 and I’m getting an itch for one . They seem very reasonably priced in the scheme of things and I know they are a solid thing as I started out on a cbf 500 . My current and only bike is a cb500x which does everything I need it to apart from long motorway journeys. I won’t be getting rid of the 500x I just fancy a cheap mile muncher for the sake of having one. I’m 6,2 and 17 stone not half the man you are but still find it hard to fit on most older motorcycles . I think all I really want is an extra famous UA-cam vlogmasters seal of approval.🦍

Hahaha wheels are important, but yeah DCT is a good tech and all but I can honestly never ever see myself buying one on purpose.
A CBF1000 combined with the CB500 would be class imo, I love the CBF, miss it still, really solid bike and a lot of fun. You should also fit very very nicely on there.

I wish I had an audience young enough to be embracing the technology on bikes... I think the majority of my subscribers are 55+ years old and mostly set in their ways! 😀
totally agree re nav... I have built in nav in my van and I foolishly believed I could update it by connecting my phone, but I don't think I can, so as soon as we start flying rather than using roads, I'll be screwed! 😀
My next weeks video briefly discusses the tech on bikes, but not in depth or for any time.
Boats are ace... they go on water and wizz around and some are incredibly fast and silly... they are also Byways Open to All Traffic... which I LOVE 😀
It does suck how expensive motorcycles are nowadays... but I actually think, that with the tech being software mostly, and the computers on bikes are not exactly clever... I imagine we perceive the tech to be more expensive than old mechanical stuff, because bikes were cheaper back in the day... but a mass produced circuit board with software on it is possibly cheaper than a mechanical device, when you think that smartphones are effectively throwaway devices once they get to a certain age, it shows how cheap a microchip can possibly be... I don't know... might be BS.
New tech I'd chose to not be without on a bike would def be cruise control over all the other stuff (not including heated grips in this as they are old tech kinda), I have a duff right shoulder, so really need to be able to relax it on longer rides which I can't while it is being my throttle, they also make average speed check areas much safer on my driving licence too! 😀
What I do wish would happen, is if manufacturers would put all the computer wizardry in a box separate from the dash and switches etc, so that if any of those ancillaries broke, they would be a lot cheaper to fix, and could possibly be done as a home mechanic, with only the CPU needing intervention from a dealership maybe. It'd also be nice if we could reset our own service lights on the dash, do firmware updates to the ECU via smartphone and patches that are free to owners like they are on cameras, computers, phones, and any other electronic device we can buy.

Hahaha well I count and am but a sprog yet so you can take that one :P
I think you can get Ford to update them, maybe, I just have no idea is it mental expensive. Haha definitely do not try to fly in el van :P
I look forward to it :)
Naaaaah never been a boat fan, I understand that other people love them but I've never understood the appeal, I've also never liked the beach either tho so yano I'm odd :) Top of a mountain for me :D
I know from work stuff chips and such are more expensive than you'd think, they get them smaller and more powerful but they do cost more to produce, the overheads at intel for instance in Ireland are utterly insane. I just know even if the cost price of an IMU is 250 to the manufacturer that's minimum 750 to the consumer.I'm just sad new bikes seem more and more unattainable to me when they should be getting more reasonable that I'm older and more established etc.
Average speed places need to go in the bin :P Mental that that's an accepted thing now. Cruise control is a lovely to have on cars, I'd not be without it, I need to test it properly on a bike.
Yes, I agree entirely with that last statement. You are wise.

Yeah, mine can't fly... it's not a white van! 😀@@TheGorillaBiker Mountains are cool.. and mostly, unless they are a volcano, don't wobble as much as the water.
Ahh interesting, I'd have thought they were really cheap by now... they are in everything! The dash on my old KTM 390 Duke was over £600 to replace as that had all the brains in it... and they had to replace mine 4 times, the first due to a total meltdown on day two of ownership and the other 3 due to water ingress... I was glad for the warranty for sure!
You have just migrated though and are doing adulting a bit by sorting out a home to live in etc, once you are stable again, you'll find bikes accessible, am sure...
It is wrong we are having home servicing effectively taken away from us on new bikes. I am very glad I live in the UK rather than a large country though, at least a dealership for me is always going to be less than 30 minutes ride.

White vans can fly!!!! Mine never told me that! Haha I just like being high up and dry :P I don't get sea sick or anything it's just never done it for me for some reason :)
The older stuff is, but the problem is they can't make enough of them after the pandemic I think which is keeping prices high, the lead time on PLC stuff is still mad. That's very poor, glad you did have the warranty! You'd think they'd have sealed them up better after the first one :P
True enough, the Tuono V4 calls to me daily :P
Yeah, I just feel if you own something you should be able to do 100% of the stuff affordably and not be beholden to dealerships......but I am a silly goose. That's nice to be fair, America is huuuuuuuuuge :D

You're not a dinosaur but it is 2024 so you can identify as one if you wish. I don't mind tech on my bike. My RKS has RDRS, plus for long trips cruise control is a must plus I will use it on my short jaunt into town so I won't get a speeding ticket. Johnny law is everywhere around here. Another tech that is a must is heated grips and heated seat, a must in the spring and fall. Would you count cardo as tech? It's great when riding with someone, who has one, and is great for nav from my phone. With that being said I also love the simplicity of my KLR, rock solid and basically bullet proof. The problem with the KLR is I'm always searching for 6th gear and I can't count how many times I've locked up the rear brake without ABS.
    cheers

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  7 місяців тому +1

Hey that could be fun, Stegosaurus or something. Now the big question I have is how many times have you had tech related issues on the RKS? I know you had some on the Pan Am and also how often did it keep you down for? Yeah cruise is definitely useful, I'd never own a 4 wheeled vehicle without cruise for sure. I think due to the fact I've never had a bike with those things myself I don't miss them, and the thoughts of more things to break and fix make me uncomfortable :D
If Kawasaki had added one extremely long highway gear to that bike it'd have made it so much better. Haha locking up the rear is fun tho :P

Yes you a dinsoaur or maybe getting to an age where technology scares you 😉😉😂😂. But you do have a point. Vehicles with alot of technology tend to date quicker than those without. Look at the new and old harley Road Kings and Ultra's. The Ultras date quicker due to all the tech it has. This may change with the new TFT screens as software can be updated.
Since getting a bike with cruise control, it has been a game changer on longer rides. That and being able to stream music/podcasts when doing highway riding.

    • @TheGorillaBiker

Hahaha I like USING tech, especially if it's in a rental car etc, I just absolutely hate paying for it and trying to look after it :P Basically I'm poor :D
Exactly. Any bikes I see still being sold and re sold for the 20th time are all based off a simpler build idealogy, and that's something I find very appealing. I don't want to buy 400 daily bikes over my lifetime. 2-3 good ones would have me very happy. S/w can be updated but those screens can't really be repaired, the right to repair is top of my list on everything, if I own something, I want to be able to fix it.
Cruise control is definitely a very nice to have, I do that with my cardo anyway :)

At some point, if you hang enough doo-dads on it, you’re dealing with a car and mechanizing everything that makes riding fun. I have a KLR, FXR, Sportster, and am getting a Z900rs next week. All basic bikes, all good enough for me. Can work on em by the side of the road (except maybe the Z). When I go ride, I go to get away from phones and gadgets, GPS and cameras. That stuff is for the birds.

I ride daily for work so some ease of life mods will always be on my daily bike, it's also a 120 miles a day trip :) The Z you could work on at the side of the road! It's a pretty straightforward machine. GPS on my phone I love though, I used to use physical maps but they take up space and go out of date, GPS is great for when you need to get somewhere by a certain time.
      Haha fair enough!
