How to get to town from Zurich Airport by train
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- This video shows you how to go to the city centre from Zurich Airport. The airport is served by frequent train services by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS), the tickets of which can be bought as soon as you reach the baggage reclaim hall. A single Second Class train ticket costs only CHF 6.80. Simply go straight on when you enter the Arrival Hall and you will reach the Airport Centre, where the train station can be found in the basement.
There are no ticket gates in the station, but there will be inspectors on the train, so be sure to have a ticket with you. Before boarding, you should validate your ticket by folding it once and sticking it into the orange machines in the platforms. Double decker trains are used, and will arrive at the Zurich HB (Hauptbahnhof, Main Station) in around 10 minutes. This has got to be the fastest and most cost effective way to get into town at an expensive city like Zurich.
Over 100,000 views? Thank you for your support all this time! While the details in this guide may not be 100% correct and partly out of date, it is good to see that it is still simple and effective for most people after all these years!
As a Swiss native, it's always interesting how others see what we consider as "normal". So pure and cute to watch. Love it.
That's good to hear. The only thing I was not used to is the lack of ticket gates, and that I should not even have to validate the ticket I bought - However, given the number of views of this video, it was a magnificent mistake indeed.
I am curious.... What is the purpose of the Ticket Validating Machine then??
Very informative, thanks, I am going to Zurich this March for the first time.
Thank you so much ❤
Thank you! This video could be an official "SBB/CFF/FFS" video - (Swiss Rail Way Company) - like clock work. Perfect in every aspect - videography and handling of difficult lighting conditions to perfection included. Thank you !
PERFECT! Thank you for this very informative video. I travel a lot and always like to plan well. This is the only video I could find that details how to get a train ticket from Zurich airport to the center "step by step." I very much appreciate that. And the comments about validating--I really don't care whether you have to validate or not. It certainly doesn't hurt and it could hurt very much if you needed to validate and didn't do it. Excellent video. Thank you.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Please share this video with others so that more people can see it.
Agree with you. Even now, after 4 years, it's hard to find a good video about the topic. Without long history lessons, useless videos from airport and train. The exact video contains all necessary info in just 3 minutes
Very good video. Short, simple and with all the relevant information inside. Congratulations!
Thanks for the insight, makes my arrival and transit into Zurich HB a lot easier. 👍🏻
You are welcome. The only new tip I could think of is that the ticket for the train may be bought in advance online, saving you the need to fiddle with that ticket machine.
@@kylohk ok, let me search that. Cheers.
Thanks a lot! First time going to Zurich from NY and I wasn't sure how to do this city center thing but this video was a great help.
This was very informative, especially about validating my ticket! Has anything much changed since you made the video?
If you like to get around Zürich it would make sens to take 24h ticket as it is valid for 24 hours on all mode of public trasprotation (Trains, S-Bahn, Streetcars, Busses, Cablecars, Boats...) withhin the Downtown Zürich (Zone 110) and Area around the Airport (Zone 121). It is not much more expensiv then a Ticket just downtown Zürich.
In your case it would make sens the oneway as you are late at night and only want to get to your hotel.
Thanks. I finally learnt about this 24/72 hour after validation concept when I was in Warsaw of all places!
did you actually fold your ticket and stuff it into the validator? haha..
i am sorry, but thats so funny. you only have to validate tickets that look like the ticket drawn onto the validator. and yours doesnt.
Great video, just one question do these trains have toilets onboard?
Very helpful
Thanks, this was very informative and to the point.
Thank you, Lo! Informative and well-edited!
You are more than welcome. Looks like I have a knack for making videos showing people how to take trains from airports!
Hi, thank you for the video.
I will be traveling there soon for the first time.
Could you tell me if I can buy a cell phone chip in the zürich main station?
For the life of me I could not find that ticket machine. Found a big bank of machines in the airport hall. Got intimidated by the crowd and went to the “store” where we got tickets to the hb as well as a pass for the tram, so it was all good.
Good Informative Video👍 Thanks for your effort.
You are welcome. Will you head to Zurich this year?
Angkutan umum ( bush/bus ber logo Zurich, ), kalau Indonesia busway nya( trans jaya).
Thanks but not discussion how how to interpret the Ticket and which Platform to go to
Can you get these tickets ahead of time ?
can we use swiss pass to take train from airport to zurich hb?
How far is Zurich Old town from the Zurich HB station?
You don't have to stamp the Ticket, this is valid from Time of purchase!
In some ways, that was a wonderful mistake because it caused so many people to comment on it, increasing the "engagement" on this video thus causing the algorithm to allow more people to find this video!
I recommend using the SBB app to pay and find info etc.
Which app would that be? Do you have a link?
@@kylohk Look up "SBB app". I tried to post a link but the comment got removed automatically because links are considered spam.
@@zlamdat I see what you mean now. It is good that train tickets in most countries in Europe can be bought online in the form of e-tickets. This way I can just save the ticket in my phone before my trip, go straight to the train station when I arrive and save a few more minutes of my time.
@@kylohk Yes the train staff will just scan the QR code on your phone app. It is extremely convenient. You don't need to worry about losing a ticket or having enough balance on a store-value card.
@@zlamdat Come to think of it, I have been using e-tickets in the UK just like that for a few years since this video was made!
I feel sorry about it but I laughed when you "validated" that ticket by folding it. So unusual to see my home town from a complete foreigners perspective.
Let's just say I made a very pleasant mistake as it got so many people commenting about this!
May I know the purpose of the Ticket Validation Machine?? What is it used for? Is there really a need to "validate" the tickets??
@@KCHSG The machine is for "activating" a day on a multi day ticket. There are 6 lines for 6 days on the ticket. You put it into the machine and then it prints the date of the current day on one of the 6 lines. It also cuts away the left corner of the current line, so that the printer goes to the next line the next time you use the machine.
@@AlexanderOnFire Thank you for the explanation. I am back from Switzerland already and validated my ticket once during the trip. I understand what it is used for now 😁 Appreciate your explanation.
Cool. Informative.
Super!!!😊😊😊
Will there be a seat number on the ticket? Can we sit in a seat of our choice?
You can pick any free seat you like when you get on the train or simply stand the whole way if you wish. It is just like taking your typical metro train.
@Chevolen You are welcome. Do you plan to visit Zurich any time soon?
The video is very cool and helpful, but the cuts between the scenes are a bit... awkward? :) Nevertheless, continue doing what you do! Very nice and helpful! :)
To be fair, I did not bother with transitional effects until much later on. But thanks for your feedback anyways.
@@kylohk Oh, I see, it's already three years old. I didn't notice that, I'm sorry. :) You're a nice person, keep on going!
i have a swiss travel rail pass so still i need to buy the ticket for Zurich-Interlaken? plz help i am travelling first to switzerland
thanks KY great help
When will you head to Zurich next?
Where do i get tram 10 or 12
Can you also ride this train at the airport to go directly to Lucerne? Thank you.
There are trains to Lucerne, all right. Just need to look up the timetables.
Yes, you can buy a ticket to lucerne directly at the same machine, theire are then either direct trains to lucerne, or very good connection in Zürich.
Can we use Swiss Travel Pass for this train ?
yes
Hello, not sure if you still respond to an old video. Do they have tickets that can be used for 24 hours in Zurich? For all the public transport like trams, trains and boats?
Yes, you can get a 24 hour ticket like the one shown here: www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/travelcards-and-tickets/tickets/daypass.html
@@kylohk thank you
@@safieeaziz2398 You are welcome. Have you been to Zurich yet?
@@kylohk I'll be going in May
@@safieeaziz2398 Great, it should certainly be much warmer than right now! What do you plan to do while in Zurich?
How many stops before reaching the main station?
To my memory, the train only stopped at 1 station, Orelikon on the way to the main station.
Great job!
Just take the no 10 tram directly
to the airport. Much easier. Just
wheel your case on and off. No
reason to go up and down any
escalators.
How much longer does it take to reach the city centre?
@@kylohk
Only about 10 minutes more.
But you do not have to lug
suitcases /bags in lifts, on
escalators or steps. You
roll your suitcase off the tram,
cross a road ( not busy) and
walk straight into the Airport.
I live in Zurich and find if you
go by train to the Airport you
have to walk past loads of
people. Whereas the tram
is quieter and more peaceful.
Hope you liked Switzerland,
after the hustle and bustle
in Hong Kong or China. Or
anywhere in the East. Here
in Switzerland it is safe, quiet
and peaceful.
@@111-w9d7y Sounds good. I remembered that the hotel I stayed in during that trip was along a tram line with a direct tram to the airport. Maybe I could try that next time.
Zurich train ( kereta api cepat ber logo Zurich).

There is no validation of the ticket required. Your ticked is good for 1 hour after purchase...
Thank you for your reminder! It does not hurt to have yet another comment about this!

Can I use the same ticket on s-bahn and IR or are they two different companies?
@Conchita Mendez that means I take the train from Zurich Airport to Zurich main station, and i don't need to get a new ticket to take another train to interlaken?
@Conchita Mendez ah thank you!
What is the journey time but?
10 minutes. This airport is very close to the city centre.
It's mentioned in the video!
Is there any difference in quality between the IR, IC and EC trains? Which has the best quality seating in 1st class?
IC trains stop at a few large cities along the route while IR trains stop more frequently. I normally travel 2nd class. The seats are not a lot better in 1st class. However, 1st class is quieter. If you are travelling during rush hour (same times in all countries), or on holidays, I travel 1st class as the 2nd class coaches are usually quite full. Also if you have a 2nd class Pass you can always upgrade to a 1st class ticket at the station for the difference of the two tickets.
Wait! Are you come from Hong Kong?
Yes, I do! And you?
Wow but why you go not Ziegelbrücke
Cool
0:44 and could it be paid in €?
The label on the machine at 0:49 may say so?
@@AlejandroParis Yes, it accepts Euros in €5, €10 and €20 denominations at the very least.
I went through there some months ago. It may be important to mention that it only gives change in Swiss coins, which it equiparates to euros, so you loose money. Careful with this scam
@@AlejandroParis I am not surprised. If you pay in a currency foreign to the country you are in, you will most likely be provided an unfavourable exchange rate. Maybe paying by card is the safest, assuming that your bank charges reasonable fees when it comes to foreign exchange.
It says i uave one hour what if i missed my train?
If you are travelling in the day time, there should be another train within less than 10 minutes. If you are travelling late at night, good luck!
@@kylohk If the ticket is valid for one hour, does this mean that I need only to buy a single oneway ticket to city and then ride back to the airport using the same ticket within the hour .? TIA
@@sixtyfy6601 yeah
@@sixtyfy6601 I don't think so. It's another direction - ain't it?
If the summer of 2022 will right, my father will not have any problem, n he can go usually to my brothers in Germany, n my cancer-examinations will also negative, n one of my brothers could have at least a free week, he or they do(es)nt work on that week, i wanna go to visit them. But unfortunately a 12 hours car journey o flixbus is not good 4 me! If one of the two hungarian airports, Ferihegy o Debrecen had a flight to and from Zurich or at least Basel, of course i wanna fly, after that i must to select ground transportation or my brother comes for me by car. My younger botha lives in Ravensburg. Yes, in Ravensburg please! The town is or was famous 4 its boardgame and childbook-factory, the Ravensburger AG. And these airport can be reached within 3 hours by car please! But i havre read on UA-cam n the timetable of die Deutsche Bahn, that there r several trains between Basel Bad Bahnhoff and Ravensburg please! But the Munich airport seems also good solution!
9999 views? What luck...
10 minutes and 6 euros? That's A JOKE !!!
buy a half-fare card for 100 chf a year and all tickets will only cost you half of the amount. yeah i know it's expensive, but if you look at the great infrastructure throughout the country it' can be justified.
@@Gagon32 No it cannot. Not for visitors. This video is about how to get to town from the aiport. One can assume that mainly visitors will be on this ride. 6 euros for a 10-minute ride IS expensive.
@@martinc.720 Yes it can.
You are in Switzerland the prices are normal for swiss standards but if you are from a country with lower income it can be a bit frustrating.
From a swiss perspective the prices make sense, if you are price sensitive switzerland might not be the ideal place to be honest.
Not only for this ride but for...everything.
The taxi would cost 30 minimum, so this really is a steal. Also the ticket he bought includes travel in the city as well, so you can get to your hotel/accommodation as well.
@@qornopiratu i visited Zurich recently. Its actually a very good deal to buy a 24h ticket
