What a brilliant story! I ended up in Scotland in 1978 as a 11 yr old Chilean exile, my PE master Arthur Ross noticed that I was being bullied because of my skin colour, one day at PE this giant of a man asked if I'd ever played Rugby..I said "no Sir never" he then told me to turn up Saturday morning and that was that. I fell in love with Rugby Union, played for Boroghmuir where I met Norrie Rowan who came from the same hood (Lol) that I grew up in...and always Scotland. I couldn't believe that Chile qualified super proud C'mon Chile and of Course C'mon Scotland!!!
Ps: The bullying stopped...I was hanging out with the 30 biggest guys at school...I played scrum half :)

My story is the other around: I'm the grandson of a Scottish Grannie and English Grandad who somehow found themselves in Chile (I've always been a Scotland rather than England rugby fan)
So imagine my surprise when learning Chileans actually owe the development of the game to the French! (who were also Chile's last tier 1 rival in 1954)
And as you wrote: c'mon Scotland! and of course ¡Vamos Chile!

Bad information at least printed!!!!Chile Argentina and Peru formed a joint army called the army of the Andes led by the Argentine patriot Jose de San Martin and supported by the Chilean OHiggins to free us from the Spanish oppressors, a great joint effort was made and we were able to become independent in a united way that involved the crossing of thousands of men on horseback through one of the highest mountains in the world, the Andes mountain range and the Peruvian highlands, the Arica desert, the driest in the world. Today in day between Argentina and Chile there are multiple youth competitions called binational games where children from both countries travel to sports matches, Chilean children are assigned an Argentine partner who receives them at home and vice versa, we have many agreements in sports training, as an Argentine I am proud that our Chilean brothers qualify for the rugby world cup

In Chile, we know that this World Cup is for learning, that we are a long way from the great Rugby nations, and that it takes years to even reach them, but as a former player, it is a dream come true that these young boys have been able to qualify and be able to take our shield and flag to the most important event in rugby worldwide, we won that right on the field with courage and "huevos" as we say here, even if we lose by many points, to be able to participate, gain experience and be there! it's all worth it! One thing to know about sports in South America, is that there are no sport teams in schools ( with the exception of a few high society schools). You have to play on a club and pay to play, and since almost all clubs from across every sport is amateur here, almost every player, young or adult, has to pay to play (with the exception of football). So it is really hard to spread sport awareness around these countries apart from football. So what Chile did in all these years makes it way harder to imagine for someone who comes from the uk. Even here in Argentina, most people grow up to be an adult without knowing a single rule of how to play rugby, and somehow we are a tier 1 nation. Now imagine that in countries like Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. When not long ago, before they had a professional team, their players had to have a full time job while playing for their national team.

    • @hanoitripper1809

    • @Tu_Kivensito_Bombon

@@hanoitripper1809 there aren’t sports in schools in these countries as far as I know. There physical education where kids play football, basquetball, handball or volley, but just for practice or basically have fun, they don’t make teams to actually compete with other schools. Only a few schools may have teams that compete, but with clubs, not with other schools.

What really helpes progress South American rugby is the very recently incorporated Super Rugby Americas, as it allowed for the gradual professionalization of the game, thus seeing players from Chile and especially Uruguay benefitting form the franchise.
In the case of Uruguay, in particular, Esteban Meneses and his coaching staff played a central role in improving the quality of the Uruguay team

@@Tu_Kivensito_Bombon rugby is played in very few schools which are the british schools (only 14 in the country), and school tournaments are very repetitive because we always end up playing against the same 4 top schools. The clubs are also involved with the school in some sort so they also have an upper hand in club version and we basically play against the same teams in every tournament. Buuut in clubs theres a bigger variety of teams since it includes universities and schools which haven't had the opportunity to play rugby so thats a big plus.

@@Tu_Kivensito_Bombon that is not true, in chile we have sports in schools just not as many as they have in usa which makes sense considering the difference in populations, i competed in football (soccer) and volleyball representing my school against other schools, and we also had cheer (the cheerleaders at my school even went to an international competition) and other sports academies that didn’t compete due to lack of other school teams

I was happy for them when they qualified but now knowing their history it makes it even sweeter. It's Japan, Uruguay and Georgia all over again and I could not be happier. These countries are so important to rugby, the underdogs with a huge amount of heart and passion. A real feel good which rugby desperately needs right now. Chile's humble beginnings to the development and the vision of one man who saw the potential of this nation. Now playing in a World Cup where they can capture the fans hearts and show the world what they can do. I can't wait for their opening game and see first hand this team play live, from my living room. Hell of a video! Chile hit it´s performance peak in those qualifiers and have been struggling to maintain that level since then, but I do believe they will be hungrier than any other team to show their best to the world.
There is, however, a dark side to the Chile story which I hope doesn´t further develop. I´ve been reading out there many demeaning comments from Chileans expecting unrealistic results and criticizing the inconsistency of the team instead of getting behind them. I really hope the Chilean crowd understands that the path to professionalism and competing at world cup level is that... a process...and that they will enjoy and celebrate the occasion, and take their lessons to continue growing. Good luck Chile!

An Argentinian here. Dear Squidge: please read up on Chilean History. Getting that painful bunch of misconceptions out of the way, your history of Chilean rugby is quite exact, and trully admirable. The Chileans were very smart in hiring proffessional coaches, high quality retired players from Uruguay and Argentina. On top of that, a South American franchise tournament was created a few years ago, which Argentina sort of didn´t much like or care for, being a much better rugby country than, in reality, every other nation in the whole continent at the time. What really happened was: a lot of argentinians were hired by other nation´s franchises, as coaches and as players. Every single franchise made great improvements, and argentinians started to admire some very talented players from all around, and learnt the hard way to respect the supposedly "weaker" opponents. Including countries like Colombia, Perú and Ecuador, helped speed up their development, even if suffering heavy defeats. I am quite proud of the argentine collaboration, which has made us humble, and that we have been able to share whatever knowhow or experience we have, and help bring about the talent that really was everywhere. Progress has been remarkable, indeed! Outstanding are Chile and Uruguay, and I wish both all the very best in the RWC and ever after. I dream that in the near coming years a competitive American "Barbarians" team can be formed to tour thye world and face all countries!

@@posteador Bad information at least printed!!!!Chile Argentina and Peru formed a joint army called the army of the Andes led by the Argentine patriot Jose de San Martin and supported by the Chilean OHiggins to free us from the Spanish oppressors, a great joint effort was made and we were able to become independent in a united way that involved the crossing of thousands of men on horseback through one of the highest mountains in the world, the Andes mountain range and the Peruvian highlands, the Arica desert, the driest in the world.

Out of all the games they play, I think Chile's match against Japan could produce the shocks of the tournament. Japan have been far from their best this year and I do fear for them at this World Cup. Also, Samoa v Chile will be an interesting game that the South Americans can be competitive in, although Samoa are an unknown quantity while still bedding in their former All Blacks and Wallabies, having the potential to upset both Argentina and England if they get their tactics right. Chile have the potential to do what Portugal did in 2007. Even if they come away winless, any tries or major points they get, especially against the big teams in Pool D, will be an achievement that can be grown upon in years to come.

Missed the best part of the story about that USA vs Chile game in Santiago. Right when the US had kicked a penalty to touch and were mauling down the pitch the flood lights in the stadium went out for half an hour! This was all live on stream. The players walking around the dark stadium with only the reflected street lighting. They had to stop the match and when they came back Chile rattled off those amazing tries against the cold American defense.

I'm a Chilean born English man. As a child I attended the Colegio Bautista in Temuco. Although the sport wasn't on the curriculum I remember playing impromptu rugby matches with my mates using an American football and begging the PE teachers (unsuccessfully) as a class to teach us. There was so much enthusiasm for the sport even back then in the early nineties and it's a joy to see how far the Condores have come.

Fantastic to see Chile get a go at the top table.
    Ditto Portugal.
Let's also acknowledge that Covid really affected qualifying among Tier 2 nations. Countries with central contracts, with players based primarily at one club, were able to train and play together during the pandemic (Chile and Portugal).
USA and Canada, with players spread out over much larger countries, and others based in Europe, barely saw each other during the pandemic, and had to play these qualifiers with minimal preparation. USA had guys flying in from all over the day before these games, and had players in Europe unable or unwilling to travel. Others refused the vaccine (it's the US) and couldn't travel to Chile or Uruguay.
It will be interesting to see what happens next time: will teams that are going down the 'let's have a professional league' regain the whip hand over the 'central contracts, have all our players in one team' approach?
Fascinating battle of ideas in Tier 2!

Spain and the US for different reasons could feel hard done by in not being at this World Cup.
To a lesser extent Canada too although they have fallen behind, plus if they weren't now in exile the structure in Russia is similar.
I have a sneaky feeling that 2027 will be a 24 (four groups of six) or 25 (five groups of five, with a last 16 round), in order to ensure the US qualifies next time. But the depth is now genuinely there.
Unless the 5th place teams in most of the groups get completely trashed I'd expect an announcement to that effect this winter.

@@Luic1987 The viewership of rugby isn't as big worldwide as soccer, so there's not much point making the WC too big. Not to mention the longer it is the more the schedule will clash with other sports and programming which is counterproductive for TV licensing fees, public attention and media coverage. The Rugby WC 2023 started a few days before the finals of the Basketball WC 2023, so you can see how squeezed things are already.
