Arthas was a man of good intentions. He swore he would stop at nothing to protect his people, the people of Lordaeron was all that was on his mind. He saw the plague first hand, and what it did to his people, and vowed to put an end to it. He started by killing Kel'Thuzad, but of course that didn't help really. He saw his people turning in mere moments from alive and well to hungering undead, turning on their own loved ones. That took a toll on the young prince. When he reached Stratholme and found the plague had been spread, he did what he did for his people. He purged Stratholme, sacrificing the few in an attempt to save the many. But by doing this he disconnected himself from the Light. Not necessarily by choice, but he did what he felt was the only option. The Light abandoned Arthas, setting him further down his path of darkness, taken not by choice but by a will to save his people. By taking up Frostmourne, in order to save his people, he completed the journey towards Darkness, blinded by his desperate desire to save his people and his kingdom. In my eyes, Arthas was never a villain. Merely a Hero blinded by his desire to do good and tricked by the forces of Darkness. Arthas' story is truly a sad one.
He is the Darth Vader of Warcraft lore. The fallen hero, dark and menacing. My favorite character by far. Sad to see what has become of this once mythological lore.
I agree. he did nothing he thought was wrong, he believed that if he picked up the most powerful sword at the time that he could save his people from the plague, he believed that he could only save the rest by killing the ones he knew had already come to death, and that is why he had become the thing he once fought against. if it weren't for the legion already being there, he would still be here as the paladin he used to be.
@@francoluiz5278 I couldn't agree more, both Anakin and Arthas had good goals and good intentions, both born for greatness but got tricked and manipulated down the path of darkness.
Arthas is the best story of Warcraft universe, but you can't have perfection everytime. I left WoW after WOTLK pissed off about the changes of Cataclysm, and with Mist of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor I was sure during a long time that the plot died. But you know, if Arthas will always be the best character of Warcraft, the second is Illidan. And with his return in Legion I started to think about... And BFA achieved to convince me. Arthas is dead, but the entire "good" lore no. Illidan, Sylvanas, Jaina, their stories continues and i will follow them now. The king is dead but his realm is eternal ! For Azeroth !
Arthas is a highly tragic figure in the series. Struggling to protect his people and feeling kept below his potential he seeks for a way to prove himself worthy as prince and as paladin. He lost mind, honour and friends over his fanatic search for a way to stop the Plaque. And to achieve this goal he sacrificed his soul and only to become his worst enemy and fully aware of his deeds. Unable to end them for Ner'Zhul is way too powerful.
Was he unable?! didnt he kept the scourge away? my pov of the situation was that he knew the only choice he had was to sacrifice himself gaining Ner'Zhul's trust to obtain the power and through it...... peace. Remember that Arthas prefered always sacrifice instead of dishonor like a true paladin. Yes he killed Uther and Therenas who intended to fight the scourge face to face. He stoped Malfurion's plan and Illidan's but if they succeded that would unleash the full power of the scourge though Azeroth. He was fully aware of the situation and maybe the only one who understood it's place in that crisis. So it was that he's last words were "father is it over?", or the motive behind keeping Jaina's locket.
Ragen Crimson i played every single warcraft game im fond with the universe. Im just saying he had his reasons to did what he did and maintained some of his soul untill the end. I know Blizzard enfatized his human side and the "power corrupts" ideology on him and that's why he is my favourite hero/anti-Hero on all the lore, BUT the culling was a need to a bittersweet victory and if the corrupted he wanted to slay the rest of Azeroth he would, with Ner'zhul's power... but the lich king didnt. It's somehow like Illidan. Somehow Arthas (in the LK) managed to kept the scourge at bay. That's the principal reason that Bolvar offered himself to be the next LK . Besides that, if you know the lore, when Sylvanas commited suicide she saw young Arthas falling through oblivion, because his soul (like you said) was trapped and maintained there forever. So there was a light in LK, there was some Arthas in there... but that's my point of view of things. ;)
In light of recent events... I am legitimately in tears. I can't stay with this company but I will never forget the memories and friends I've made. No king rules forever, my son.

Arthas is truly one of the greatest antagonists ever brought to fiction. A fallen hero, blinded by his goals to save his people, and corrupted because of it. Truly a sad story, one that the players saw through the eyes of the fallen prince himself as they played through his story across two different WC3 campaigns. Then there was the book invincible, and then there was Wrath. Blizzard never missed the mark with Arthas. The pinnacle of their storytelling prowess gave us a truly iconic character that will be remembered long after the game is gone.
@@Aykock, the only reason I even know about Warcraft is because of Arthas. I then started looking into the lore behind Arthas' story. I still have not played the game because I refuse to play a game that is locked behind a subscription.
+Shaydee1990 You mean Arthas' and Varian's? Arthas was never friends with Lothar all though Lothar had spent some time in the capital with Varian after the fall of Stormwind.
I really hope that they don't make another movie about Arthas or any of the characters. They would completely ruin their characters like they did in the first movie
I enjoyed the story in Shadowlands except wha they did to Arthas. I play for the quests, not the gear. I hardly spent any time in Torghast outside of non-daily or weekly quests.
It's so sad, to think back to this, to what World of Warcraft used to be, this level of greatness will NEVER be reached again, not even close, damn you Blizzard.
As late as this all is, remember that the reason Arthas is held in such high regard by the community is that he was an excellent tragic hero. He purged Stratholme because all its citizens were infected by the plague and would soon become undead, their souls lost. The entire point of the Culling of Stratholme was to show that Arthas truly loved his people, and to “save” them he had to kill them before Mal’ Ganis. He was arrogant for sure, which was his downfall. He was willing to endure any burden, suffer any curse, pay any price, just to save his people. He believed he could endure, but whispers are so much louder when you are alone. He came to Northrend “alone”, just after committing the most traumatic act in his life.feeling betrayed by his mentor and close friend/lover. He had Muradin for a time, but soon it was just him and the whispers of Ner’Zhul. So it is not really a surprise he fell into insanity and the service of the Lich King. Who could endure that?
everytime i think about arthas i tear up and just quietly say to myself "Poor Arthas....He just wanted to save his people..." Poor Arthas indeed, he literally defiled everything he loved when all he wanted to do was protect...
@@MrCmon113 Arthas. He lost his horse at young age, he lost so many friends to scourge, his mentor left him at his hardest moment and his love betrayed him, he stopped the evil forces, but then, Ner'Zul took over his mind. Arthas returned to Lordaeron as a hero and left it as a villain.

Yeap, after 6 years, every tuesday, I'm still bitter as hell xD, but I love the video :D (it was imposible to me do well a 25 players lich king content, bc my fps dropped to 1 xD)
After Arthas died he spoke to his father, but in the unreleased extended scene there's also another soul who appears, that of J.Allen Brak. He points to the shattered remains of Frostmourne, and says "You think you do, but you don't".
This song takes me back to the first time i learnt how to play, the barbarians that attacked the village, finding out about the plague, killing Kel'thuzad, culling Stratholme, going to northrend, claiming frostmourne, killing Mal'ganis, King Terenas, slaughtering the elves, the tale of the Burning Legion, encounter with Illidan, then the journey to icecrown glacier. Man. . . . I'm so grateful i grew up with games such as warcraft
The time of Arthas was a legendary period for all of us. I played WOTLK when I was 8 and although I didn’t understand everything (English isn’t my native language) I picked up on most of the gameplay and lore. There are many legendary periods of WOW but I personally think WOTLK was the most attractive one to me.
Invincible is proof that even in his darkest times, arthus was still a warrior who fought for life even if all he could do was right a old wrong and protect the world for a limited time
@@AngryG4M3R It was sacrilage what they did to the crown. If they truly felt anything for warcraft lore they wouldnt have done it. No, they just wanted a reason for an expansion.
For everyone who keeps asking: The song consists of at least two (though I suspect three) altered versions of real languages. Using the first six lines as an example: Lines 1, 2, and 6 all closely resemble Latin. Lines 3-5 are something I don't recognize, but it's definitely not imitation Latin.
So I just thought of something: Imagine watching a (not necessarily the next) WoW film and this starts playing at the end, with some sort of reference to what is to come :D
WoW and the first 2 expansions TBC and WotLK is like a core memory to me. No matter what I do or how much time passes I simply can not taint the memory of those good old days. I played retail, Classic, classic TBC and it's not as fun today, but it doesn't matter, The memories are there to stay.
Whenever I listen to this song I can't but keep feeling the love that Blizzard put behind the game at the time. Not saying music in current WoW is bad, not at all but this and a few others are true masterpieces. Details like this made this game perfect till Wrath
This video makes me love the " an karanir thanagor" part so much. Although nobody beats the choir boy in the trailer even if this song is actively giving me chills
Sending Arthas to "Hell", "The Maw" or whatever you want to call it, was just tragic. Arthas had a similar story arc like Darth Vader / Anakin, except that he never got a second chance to redeem himself once he got free from the Lich King and Frostmourne. I'm curious about whether we'll see him in this new expansion. Not a chance I'll play it, but I'm going to look out for the story.
Its not "if" we see him, he's more or less confirmed. Given we visit the Maw it would be like not seeing/hearing from Sargeras in Legion. He'll definitely appear.
Yes Arthas, I forgive you. But do us all a favor. Next time you see a sword that's been cursed by an eredar lord, DON'T fucking touch it. I know it looked really cool but just... take a selfie or something.
There were many nights where I fell asleep next to my laptop running around in Northrend. I'd every so often awaken to this song on the log-in screen or hear it in my dreams. I miss WotLK.
I love how the Eulogy of his horse, the death of Invincible being the inciting event that led Arthas to his path, is used to signify his sacrifice and corruption. But I cannot for the life of me, find the speech Arthas makes to his dying companion before sparing him further pain.
@@Hirotoro4692 No it doesnt? The reason he was willing to go so far to "save his people" in WC3 was because of the promise he made to himself here. It signifies the sacrifice he makes in an atempt to atone for his mistakes. The same type of sacrifice that he would repeatedly make on the path into Northrend. One of the first things he does when he returns to Lorderon is ressurect the horse. You can see that in WC3 he has a horse for the undead campaign.

@@francoluiz5278 I couldn't agree more, both Anakin and Arthas had good goals and good intentions, both born for greatness but got tricked and manipulated down the path of darkness.
Tell them what happened here
*Tell them the Lich King died*
*_And the fanbase died with him_*
damn that's so true
LOL...sad but true.
Warbel high five mate 😉 ^_^
I still play in bfa. If these "fans" left after wotlk they weren't really fans.
Arthas killed so many. Yet he's such a total cutie going to revive his pet pony before anything cos he loved him :3
Arthas is a highly tragic figure in the series.
So there was a light in LK, there was some Arthas in there... but that's my point of view of things. ;)
he is like a copy&paste anakin
Spycrab quit spouting your nonesense around. You have no idea. Arthas and Anakin are nothing alike.
He dropped. After 140 runs. This was the thing I wanted since I started playing. Had to listen to this.

In light of recent events... I am legitimately in tears. I can't stay with this company but I will never forget the memories and friends I've made. No king rules forever, my son.

Cough cough sylvanas.
@Jon Danson when she became the war chief: I see only darkness...
Three different WC3 campaigns actually, we took this guy from his debuts as a Paladin to him sitting on the Frozen Throne.
Yeah give some Hero with fucked up plot that Made character loveable, yeah the more suffering he/she get, the more we like he/she 😂

If there's a sequel to the warcraft movies, i et the Arthas arc would be the best adaptation for the franchise.
There might. Duncan Jones stated he wouldn't mind doing a sequel, but it would be based on Warcraft 2, not Warcraft 3.
So possible movie about human arthas? Or am I mixing up the games.. It's been so long ;;
It would fit the timeline to base on Arthas' and Lothar's friendship
+Shaydee1990
You mean Arthas' and Varian's? Arthas was never friends with Lothar all though Lothar had spent some time in the capital with Varian after the fall of Stormwind.
I really hope that they don't make another movie about Arthas or any of the characters. They would completely ruin their characters like they did in the first movie
1:07 The chills
I had this playing when I unsubbed for the first time in 13 years during shadowlands.
Good bye wow. Had fun while it lasted.
Most sadly, tragedic, drammatic person in video games ever.
Crying when listening this...
Saddening, tragic and dramatic ****
Are you talking about Arthas or Invincible?
@@MrCmon113 Arthas. He lost his horse at young age, he lost so many friends to scourge, his mentor left him at his hardest moment and his love betrayed him, he stopped the evil forces, but then, Ner'Zul took over his mind. Arthas returned to Lordaeron as a hero and left it as a villain.
For some reason at the climax of the song, I hear the voice of King Terenas saying, "Remember who you are..... You are my son, and the one true king."
I told myself I would listen to this for an hour straight if I ever got Invincible. Looks like I’ll be keeping that promise lol

Man. . . . I'm so grateful i grew up with games such as warcraft
that awesome song still gives me goosebumps in 2019. in the beloved memory of wotlk.
This villain. This song. This fucking IS Warcraft. Damn I miss wotlk. What a time to experience wow. Pure joy
Playing this song while flying through Icecrown gives me goosebumps.
I WIL NEVER FORGET HIS NAME, ARTHAS.
6 YEARS EXACTLY.....EPICNESS NEVER DIES
After all these years...still brings tears to my eyes.
The man everyone wanted to fight, but none wanted to see die. I wish for Arthas's redemption.
Its almost criminal that a song this beautiful is made for a game. It should be a national anthem. Beautiful. Beautiful.
Too good!
This should be an National Anthem
Alex TheBest This is actually the National Anthem of Lordaeron
I don't think Lordaeron use "Arthas, my son" as a National Anthem but as a welcoming song for Arthas ( sorry for my bad english I'm French )

For everyone who keeps asking:
The song consists of at least two (though I suspect three) altered versions of real languages.
Using the first six lines as an example:
Lines 1, 2, and 6 all closely resemble Latin.
Lines 3-5 are something I don't recognize, but it's definitely not imitation Latin.
latin the lines that you dont recognize are Tarnassian (i think)
I think its elven
It's the common tongue in eastern kingdom actually, nok barash, aesir goibon, nuff rass landowars, bur agol, etc. apart from the few Latin words used
So I just thought of something: Imagine watching a (not necessarily the next) WoW film and this starts playing at the end, with some sort of reference to what is to come :D
So many years after and yet I'm crying when I see the lyrics and listen to this masterpiece.
No matter how bad the state of WoW gets, WotLK music will always hit me in the feels like a truck... first game I ever seriously played. Arthas 💕

Won't spoil it for you, but he's in the new story so keep an eye out :)
Its not "if" we see him, he's more or less confirmed.
Given we visit the Maw it would be like not seeing/hearing from Sargeras in Legion. He'll definitely appear.
Maybe they bring him back as the lich king 3.0 🤣

There were many nights where I fell asleep next to my laptop running around in Northrend. I'd every so often awaken to this song on the log-in screen or hear it in my dreams. I miss WotLK.
Me too. So much.
I love how the Eulogy of his horse, the death of Invincible being the inciting event that led Arthas to his path, is used to signify his sacrifice and corruption.
But I cannot for the life of me, find the speech Arthas makes to his dying companion before sparing him further pain.
Wc3 tells a very different story as to why he became the lich king though?
@@Hirotoro4692 No it doesnt? The reason he was willing to go so far to "save his people" in WC3 was because of the promise he made to himself here.
It signifies the sacrifice he makes in an atempt to atone for his mistakes. The same type of sacrifice that he would repeatedly make on the path into Northrend.
One of the first things he does when he returns to Lorderon is ressurect the horse. You can see that in WC3 he has a horse for the undead campaign.
There will never be another character better written than Arthas
