  • I was not getting the results I was looking for while sublimating the rock slates. I tried several time and temperatures to get an even color on the slate . I bought a silicone mat and with that I found that the paper did not stick and it seems to help from burning the paper with that being said I still could not get a 100% sublimation on the slate.... until I figured out why. I hope this helps someone down the road with sublimation.

I appreciate that you showed alllllll of the processes you went through to get the desired result. I wish I would've seen this a couple of days ago LOL. This definitely helps with the anxiety I felt to try a second one.

By far, the best, most informative video for how and how not to sublimate slate! I used your recommendations, 400 deg, face up with a silicone pad and medium pressure, making sure the slate was centered so that there was even pressure, for 330 seconds and it turned out perfect first try. The only difference is that I had already preheated the slate face down for 1 minute just before I saw your video and don't know yet whether or not that made any difference (better or worse). I have had many other degrees of success and failure using other recommendations and still could not figure out what I was doing wrong. The most important things to know are that not every procedure works for everyone's situation, as there are so many different variables, (ie, different slate, paper, ink and press manufactures along with size of slate) and also what you may be doing wrong to cause the different undesirable effects. No other videos seem to emphasize or even mention these 2 important points. Finally I have found success with slate sublimation with your help! Thank you.

Thanks so much for sharing. I keep getting the white fog type thing on mine. Sometimes it looks like ghost fingers lol It's driving me nuts. I feel your pain when you say you had to save your sanity. Same. A bunch of tried and failed. Seems every 2nd or 3rd try might turn out right then it'll happen again. Not using the silicone though, perhaps I need to give that a go. Thanks for sharing. Really appreciated.

I did 2 slates about 2-3 months ago and they were perfect...today I tried one of a tiger and by the right eye it was faded, but the rest of the image was good. I do have a silicone mat that I replace the original mat with as that had brown marks on it and some blowout ink on it. I use a HTVRont heat press, I pressed at 400 F for 420 seconds. I wonder if using the silicone mat is not as thick as the original mat that came with the HTVRont press? Do you think that could be the issue?? My spinners do just fine. It is the slates I am having the issue with. Any advice would be helpful.

I think it could be the mat also let the slate warm up a bit before sublimation the slates are very cold and do not hold heat well .

With tumblers you can heat it up and it will fade your designs and print a much darker design to sublimate over the faded one . I'm not sure about a slate.

I tried today for the first time and there is like orange ink on my photo by the eyes and hair, do not know how to correct this ,used medium pressure for 8 minutes as instructions on slate said

Did you wipe it off before you sublimated it ? Most of the times it is dust or dirt and they are blue spots.

Orange ink sounds like it burned. I know this is a year old but did you ever figure out a sweet spot for time/temp for your slates?

I did mine and even wiped it off but getting smudges that will not wipe off.

That could that be "Ghosting " and not a smudge.

@@creativedesignsupply so there is no way to get rid of it, just more heat is needed???

The easiest way to prevent ghosting is to ensure the transfer paper remains stationary when taping your panel to it. Ghosting can happen anytime air or air pressure gets underneath the transfer paper - even when the paper is still taped to the panel. if it is blue specks it could be dust or debris, You can lint roll or use a lint free cloth.
