Backpacking Desolation Wilderness - American Lake, August 2022

I had the honor of taking my 7 year old on her first backpacking trip. We started at the Echo Lake trailhead and took the water taxi up Lower and Upper Echo Lake. We camped two nights at American Lake (Wilderness Zone 33). Getting to the lake from the trail was an overland, off trail adventure. We were glad to have our GPS/map. We spent one whole day hiking along the south shore of Lake Aloha, Waca Lake and Pyramid Lake, climbing rocks and swimming. The whole area of Desolation Valley is like a giant playground. Not much wildlife other than chipmunks and bats. But the weather was gorgeous and we had a total blast.
