    As mentioned MBA in Finance is typically a go-to path towards a successful Investment Banking career. According to my research, the MBA(Finance) degree is not focused so much on finance as it consists of a management aspect as well but, MSc.Finance is primarily focused on finance has a fairly technical curriculum compared to the finance part of the MBA program. So I have a few questions regarding that matter.
    1. Which of the two will give better chance in cementing my career in Investment Banking?
    2. If I choose to pursue MSc. Finance and happen to be one of those people who get into Investment Banking with an MSc. Finance degree, will I have to an MBA after to expect better opportunities or will the MSc. Finance be sufficient?

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  2 роки тому +1

      You're right. A more focused finance degree from a good bschool will give you more opportunities in the fresher space, if you're planning to break into finance. But it's also riskier since you will not have anything beyond the degree to convince recruiters. Also, top tier investment banks may require you to take a break after a few years to pursue an MBA. Lower tier banks may not insist on it.

    This is an awesome video!
    I had a unrelated question, however, I am posting it here. I was just wondering if taking up start up roles and passion projects over top consulting and finance firms will reflect poorly in an MBA application. There seems to be a trend in most profiles and I wanted to make sure I am making the right choices. Would love to hear your take on this. Thank you!

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  3 роки тому +1

      If those startup roles and passion projects are aligned with your long term goals, it becomes easier to justify it in MBA applications. Having said that, don't take all decisions based on what admission officers will think. Decide based on what you'd love doing, even if the MBA were not there in the picture.

    I hope you and your family are safe and sound. I really like the solid quality in your blogs.
    I am 25 , Bsc (Maths Hons.) Grad 2013-16. Involved in my family business ever since. I am not satisfied with the kind of work I do and I am not happy (really frustrated) with the atmosphere I work in.
    I am never sure if a corporate career is for me. I many a times cherish the lives of academicians( profs) .
    What are the options I have , considering I am just an average joe who is really confused.
    •MBA /MiM abroad?
    • 1 yr MBAs in india?
    • Should I consider a job first?

    Hello Team,
    I was just going through some article wherein it was mentioned that adcoms usually don't consider people from trading background because they don't add much value to the college/class, how true is this?
    I'm asking this because currently I'm working as a Risk Analyst ( which seems to be a typical corporate job) while on the other hand I've got an offer from one of the london based proprietary trading firm and I wish to join it, work there for a year or 2 and then go for GMAT to apply to foreign Bschool ,but due to the above reason I'm wondering if this will be a right decision to take or not. Can you please address my query?
    Thanks in advance

    • @MBACrystalBall

      Can you share a link to that article?
      Adcoms don't look at any applicant with a black and white filter. They may have some knowledge about what you do, but it's up to you to help them connect the dots and go beyond the stereotypes. How many years have you worked as a risk analyst? What's interesting about the London role that prompted you to apply? What do you want to do after your MBA?

    My profile is
    1)Very bad engineer with absurd marks(Overall percentage-53 and Final year percentage is 57 through which my marksheet shows that I have graduated with higher second class)

      Since you admit that academics hasn't been your strength, think about whether you really want to go back into that space.
      Many programs in the UK, and EU in general, are shorter (1-year long) compared to those in the US. So they attract more mature applicants.
      3 years would be ok for US schools, but for UK it would be better to gain more experience.

What would you recommend? Should I take up Gmat after july 19th (my cfa) and take the test by October because I have been pushing cfa for quite sometime because it was getting postponed due to Covid. Not the most optimal position to be in. Round 2 applications come with their own set of challenges. Which is why we recommend getting done with the GMAT at least 1 year before the application deadlines. A few queries to understand this better: Any reason you enrolled for the GMAT now? Knowing the uncertainty around the CFA, could you have started GMAT earlier?? Was the MBA a last minute decision? If so, would you be willing to take a step back and plan the entire roadmap with more practical milestones?

    1. Apart from internships, starting up, and volunteering, what are some non-conventional things you have seen college students do to add to their work experience? (I ask this question because, since the pandemic has started, for some fields, the scope of doing internships in India have become more limited than before)
    2. In the application process, apart from the resume, are there any other components, where the work experience is supposed to be listed?
    3. Is it a good practice to list extracurricular courses done online in the resume for b-school applications?

    • @MBACrystalBall

      1. All 3 you've listed can be done online. You'll have to keep any eye open for such opportunities.
      2. The primary online application form itself often includes fields to include your professional experience.
      3. Sure, if you think you were able to do something impactful, it doesn't matter if it was online or offline.

    Hi Sameer Sir/Team,
    I am in a fix and need your guidance.
    I have a total of 7 years of experience with B.Tech in IT and experience too is in the same field, currently working with IBM India as Advisory System Analyst. However, for past couple of years I feel that there is a stagnation in my career and even people with 20+ years of experience are more or less doing the same work as of mine which I don't want to do.
    In all these 7 years I have changed 5 companies in search of some change in my routine but it is exactly the same at all the places. Somewhere it is a bit better than last one but only temporarily and somewhere it worst. Honestly speaking it would be highly frustrating for me to do the same for next decade or so, I don't know how many years.
    I feel that an Ex MBA/one year MBA from a decent college could be something which can bring a change and want to go for it. I understand that it won't do some magic or wonder and there is again a risk of once again getting into the same job features even after getting an MBA, if I get into one. Still I want to try now rather than regretting later about the fact that I didn't even tried for my options. I know that I am late but I want to give it a try before it becomes too late.
    Do you feel this could be a solution or am I thinking/doing something wrong? or you can suggest something else too.
    I had always wanted to ask this but didn't know from whom and how so again bothering you as I know you would have faced this kind of question for some nth times.
    Please let me know if you need any more details.
    Thanks for going through the details and giving your time.

      You've answered several queries in your post itself. Sure, you can go for an MBA. But that will not guarantee you that the pre-MBA trend will not continue. If you are not able to find out what you want, no program will give you that clarity. So, if you decide to go ahead with the MBA plan, make sure you are at least financially secure to absorb any scenario you come across after graduating.

    • @MBACrystalBall
      @MBACrystalBall  3 роки тому

      Unlike brands such as LBS, Oxbridge etc that are known across the world, many other bschools don't have the same brand recognition.
      So the best opportunity to change career tracks is immediately after completing the MBA when you're still in the country - by using your bschool resources, alumni networks etc.
      It also gets increasingly tougher when you move out of the country you want to work in.
      The longer you delay the transition, the more difficult it can get.
      We're not familiar with PR agencies, but whatever we've heard about their style of working hasn't been very positive. Be extra cautious if you're considering that route.

      It's got less to do with the theory taught in the degree, and more to do with the level of responsibility the employee can handle. 1. In a European pharma company (Fortune 100) that’s setting up an audit team in India and I’ll be having multi cultural exposure there and
    2. The other is in a real estate ancillary industry (unlisted) in a company based out of Dubai who have operations across gulf and the job position would require travel across gulf for audit purposes.
    On work front both are good opportunities where the team is relatively new and I’ll be trying to streamline the audit processes but I’m unable to decide which will add better value to my MBA application.
    Based on your experience, can you please help me understand which would add more value to my MBA application, please. An opportunity in India in a fortune 100 pharma company where I’ll have multi cultural exposure or foreign experience in an unlisted company?
