@@iamsherlocked875 but that's the thing - regardless if I know what that tastes like or not, she didn't describe the flavor. Even if I were going off of okonomiyaki, she said it was similar to it. So what makes it different? I understand that it's something special in how it's prepared and the location but it's hard to understand why someone should go out of their way to get it when no one knows what it tastes like.
Okonomiyaki and monjya are some of my most FAVORITE dishes, I get ingredients from the Asian grocery store and still make them back home in Greece too! ❤❤
Savoury Cabbage pancake topped with excessive sauce, sometimes some cooked thin meat slices(bacon/chicken) with some dried smoked fish flakes and powdered seaweed as toppings/sprinkles That’s a flat/unleavened pancake not one of those super airy sweet pancake like the yanks love making.
I haven't met a single Japanese person who likes Monja. It's like Jellied Eel from East End London - yes it's "local" but was born out of starvation more than anything else.
I've heard it's not the most popular either LOL. I've heard older people enjoy it more. I'd still like to try it once, though. Even if I end up not liking it.
I’m normally more of a Okonomiyaki person over Monjyayaki, but it looks like you had mentaiko in yours? And mentaiko could get me to eat anything lol Also this looks like such a fun experience in general 💕
This looks incredible until I remember that I get horrible sea sickness from the rocking on ANY SIZED BOAT that's larger than a house-boat within an hour of stepping on. Dramamine, those wrist pressure things, whatever you got, will not work for me. It sucks because I absolutely love the ocean and being around water.
I tried to go deep sea fishing once, but spent the whole day sick as a dog, despite taking Dramamine before we left. It was a really rough day on the water, there was a storm further out making it very choppy, but I’m afraid if I tried again on a calm day I’d just have the same miserable experience.
Oh, wauw! Odaiba itself is also extremely cool to visit high tech, futuristic, Odaiba Marine Park Beach, Shopping malls, great restaurants, on a grand scale. For the manga/anime people it's the place where the 1:1 scale (moving) Gundam is and the Bandai Gundam Base Tokyo store.
Having been to Japan many times and falling in love with the culture, language and food, Monjayaki is something I can never eat again. It doesn't taste bad, it's just that the texture is so unappetizing.. like it never seems fully cooked!
When I went to Japan last year and was being dressed in a Kimono, the woman styling my hair asked if I had tried this yet. Didn’t know what it was so she googled it for me, and she laughed her ass off by my look of sheer disgust 😂 I tried to hide it but it just doesn’t look appetizing. I eat with my eyes first and then texture is second most important for me. This dish disregards both of those things lmao I’m sure the FLAVOR is amazing, but my gaijin ass can’t handle it.
Same here looks and texture can ruin my desire to eat. Of course I have never been so hungry (starving level) to eat anything that looks like 😂What is that?!!!🥘 nope
Looks like a great experience! I hope they’d have some cushions though, because as soon as I saw how you were sitting and heard “2 hours”, my back suddenly started aching! 😅
Okonomiyaki has been referred to as a “Japanese pizza” or “Japanese frittata.” The batter is made with flour, tempura scraps (tenkasu), grated yam (nagaimo or yamaimo), and eggs. Monjayaki can be seen as a variant that lacks eggs or yams and often includes kombu dashi. They’re both mixed with shredded cabbage and other ingredients such as sliced pork belly, shrimp or squid. Protein toppings are spread on top of the patties while they are pan frying. Then they are topped with okonomiyaki sauce, seaweed, Kewpie mayonnaise and/or dried bonito flakes.
I lived in Japan for 16yrs and had it only one time, the place I had it, I was a regular customer and it was one of their specialties, Monjava was the name of the place. Not a lot of people ordered it. It's probably more popular in a specific region cause where I was at in Kyushu, none of the people I knew or worked with really cared for it or raved about that specific dish. It's worth a try once though.
Monjayaki doesn't sound bad, it's actually sounds tasty and I'd definitely try it, this is coming from a Dutch Canadian who grew up on sauerkraut, and a bit German mett brot (mettbrötchen, special made raw minced pork on a bread roll with spices and onions, the pork should only be bought from a butcher who knows how to make it, it absolutely has to be made that same day, and should have under 35% fat.)
It's just a watery okonomiyaki due to extra dashi making it a watery batter. Looks like this one had mentaiko. Pretty common, not a weird food by any stretch.
Very interesting 🤨 Now you’ve piqued my curiosity! 😮 But I’ll tell you that my Japanese sister-in-law has surprised me with lots of dishes I had no knowledge of. 😅
hahaha I randomly got shown your "couples ringmaking" reel from last year on IG earlier today and I was like OMG STOP THE BUS THEY DOIN IT YA'LL! and then my wife pointed out it was from like a while ago and I made us get out at the next stop so I didn't have to explain myself. I completely agree with Michael that the shortness of the episodes and/or season really did the series disservice. Had they had longer episodes and/or season, they could have explored Osha while she was Sol’s padawan and the special connection they form. While there, they could have shown us a young Yord who becomes friends with a young Osha and that bond. Maybe introduce Jecki just before Osha leaves and why it was so traumatic for her even as, at that point, she still desperately wanted to be a Jedi. While there, introduce the political element of senators who don’t trust a powerful entity who seemingly have zero oversight or accountability. Then, when Brendok happens, you understand the immediate external pressure Vernestra feels from the political side. You push up ep 3 and 7 more toward the middle or closer to the first half to explore what happened and why Osha and Mae carry the emotional scars they do. You sprinkle in the Jedi that die in ep 5 during the earlier scenes as instructors or classmates or passing by in the background so that when they die, it has some, any weight at all. Then, you play some with Plagueis and Qimir if they are master and student and show maybe that Qimir is chafing under Plagueis (or Tenebrous or whoever this is) and wants an acolyte to escape from the harsh loneliness of the Sith life as well as someone to teach. All the while remembering how Vernestra and the Jedi who threw him away fuels his anger and hurt. Then have Osha spend some time with Qimir for a while and have her wear her down even as she tries to uphold her old Jedi ideals. In the meantime, the Jedi work on Mae and have Sol have to confront Mae and the Jedi Order over what he did. The show could have benefitted from deeper exploration of its themes and characters with longer run times and season, but 8 episodes at ~35 min each was just not enough time. Yeah, you could edit the series into a 2hr movie, but you would have an even flimsier story and relationship that wouldn’t have been any different than what we got.

Monjayaki is my fave way to eat cod roe. And cheese is a must! Thanks for sharing need this boat ride now!
Was about to comment the same. Mentai Mochi Cheese Monjayaki is the best combo.

In case you don’t know what monjayaki is, it’s similar to okonomiyaki, which you also likely don’t know what it is.
Hey, I've seen Ranma 1/2. It's the...pancake...thingie. With giant spatulas as weapons!
(Pretty sure that last part is necessary.)
in her defense, i knew what okonomiyaki is but this is my first time ever hearing of monjayaki
Monjayaki is a looser version of okonomiyaki.
If Okonomiyaki is a pancake, monja is oatmeal.
