      Yes. We had no water or power for 2.5 days. With a recent diagnosis of type 1 diabetes from my son, things were terrifying and difficult.

    🐓🐔l watched my three chickens do a synchronized dust bath. It was almost unbelievable because they were literally identical in there movements. Very cool to watch. And on another sad note... Poor Sally got her bottom pecked horribly bad by the two lSA chickens. I immediately separated her. Now l'm treating her for vent gleet. She is getting better. She will always be separated now. I added on a 8x8 run for her. 🐔It is so stressful but what can l do....l love her. I give her baths and bought blue Cote today. Hoping it helps. Thanks Sara

      Oh no. Poor Sally I’m so sorry. They’re so good at hiding pain but I’m sure it was so difficult for her. Sounds like you’re doing everything right, I’m proud of you. Maybe eventually you can give her a friend or two ❤️🐓

      Wondering if two rescued rabbits 🐇 would be a good fit. Do you know anything about domestic 🐇 rabbits?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 роки тому +1

      Oooh maybe! They definitely would need their own food and shelter. But they might be able to coexist. I think it would be a little tricky to keep each of them out of the others food and that kind of thing, and I have never had a pet rabbit but I think that might be a really neat thing. Let me know what you end up doing!

    My flock bathes themselves everywhere in the run. 😂 the others wait for a place where one of my Marans start. They are big and really get a good hole to lay down. I do add DE but not in large quantities. I just bring the container with me and sprinkle some in the areas they love. If anyone is new to chickens and is thinking about using DE, they should be very careful not to breathe in the dust! It can cause some serious respiratory problems! I have a fire pit in my yard but we burn various things in there so I have a smaller one that we had before we dug a huge pit in the back. I only burn tree debris in the small one and then use it for my chickens. My son and I have a chemical allergy so I am so very diligent about what I use.
    Sarah- I just got 4 more peeps!!! I need help 😂😂😂 Two Plymouth Rocks, a Columbian Rock and a Gold Laced Wyandotte! My coop and run are pretty small so it looks like we have a big project on the agenda this spring! My Roosters will be happy and so will my girls because they are torn up from mating. Just got 6 aprons in the mail yesterday so I hope the girls don’t give me a hard time putting them on.
    Thanks for the tips!! 💜💜

    Do you layer the topsoil first then a layer of poultry dust on top, or mix it all together? How often should you change and clean the dirt bath? Thinking of making one for the small wild birds at my allotment.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi! I don’t worry about layering too much as they’ll mess it up within five minutes 😉 the only thing is that since poultry dust is so fine, it’ll blow away easily, so maybe put that lower if you do layer intentionally. I wouldn’t change it unless it gets a lot of poop in it or it gets wet in rain etc. (Though you can just really poultry dust, everything else will dry out just fine.) ✌🏻❤️🐓

    If you can still buy it, Avon skin so soft lotion/oil repels mosquitoes. But lotion on or put a little oil (1-10) in a spray bottle with water, shake it and spray anything you want. Works great, if Avon still sells it. Is Avon still a thing?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  Рік тому

      Hi! I know Johnson and Johnson (or even store brands like my beloved Amazon) make a baby lotion that’s the same idea too! I use it on my kids and I. It’s a light green bottle and it’s an aloe baby cream. ✌🏻❤️🐓

    I thought you make lye by adding water to wood ash. Does it matter? I'm assuming people have been using wood ash for dirt bath for a while, so it'll be fine. But, I just wanted to be safe.
