Byzantium did reconquer most of Italy at one point, although it did not last that long.
The Byzantine Empire controlled some possessions in Italy until the 11th century. The exarchate of Ravenna falls in 751.
Also spain, africa, Justinian did something of a restoration. He was only slowed down by the first appearance of the Black plague on humans. Back then it was fondly named the Justinian Plague after him. And that of course destroyed the empire economy and manpower and that prevented him from taking his conquest any further and from keeping hold of what they had taken. But even with the plague he managed to take back parts of spain.

My brother in Christ I'm telling you this as someome who played into the 1950', save the game twice, shut down hoi and reset you pc, and then continue playing, it will make the torture a little quicker.

Everytime you fight japan you have to go across an entire ocean because some random nation becomes a major its just really unlucky
I will teach you how naval works , the patrol order makes your ships search for enemy fleets to kill them , strike force is like a suport order , when a battle starts the fleet that is on strike will help on the battle , convoy raid is simple as convoy scort , naval suport is good for helping in naval invasions and fighting on a coast , and dont make a huge task force make a balanced one . I will put the numbers that I use of the ships for each order
Patrol Order - You dont need much of these they will search one naval region at the time
1 - Carrier
2 - Battlecruisier or Battleships
4 - Heavycruisier
12 - Lightcruisier
30 - Destroyers
8 - Subs
Strike Force - Use at least 4 of these , and remenber where you place this force will make you navy better or worst
4 - Carrier
4 - Battlecruisier or Battleships
4 - Heavycruisier
20 - Lightcruisier
12 - Destroyers
8 - Subs
Convoy raid - You will need a full commander of these to have 100 % efficiency , make your submarines with the smokels I or II
25 - Subs
Convoy Scort - DO NOT PLACE ONLY SCREENS ON THIS ONE , cuse if you do when the enemy strike forces arrives , your strike force will not have enough time to protect this fleet and you need a lot of them to have 100 % efficiency
1 - Battlecruisier or Battleships
2 - Heavycruisier
10 - Lightcruisier
30 - Destroyers
4 - Subs
OR this is more Risky
10 - Lightcruisier
50 - Destroyers
4 - Subs
Naval Suport - If you are losing some battles on the coast use this to help you

FYI at its height the Byzantines owned basically everything you can core via the secondary decisions, originally eastern roman borders included parts of Iraq too

I don't know if you know this or not by now and i've noticed you make that mistake a couple of times but when you give a fleet to move to a specific zone or port then you assign them a mission especially strike force mission they cancel the previous order and go to the mission you selected but in strike force mission case the v go the the nearest port to them not the mission to them so that's why most of the time when you send them to a location then assign them a mission they won't go there
Hope it help and i love this chaotic way of playing it keeps the game interesting and of course your suffering and your voice going from excited to self deletion is always an amazing bonus

The countries shown in the we are at war with golden boarders arent actualy majors it bugs out. Hover your mouse over the button and it tells all the majors
You know in the game rules you can set countries on their historical path while still staying on ahistorical.
