The future of self driving cars is going to be great for huge corporations like Tesla, which will provide cars, Google, which will write the code and Uber, which will manage the fleet, however it is going to be very bad news for regular working people like taxi drivers, truck drivers and bus drivers who will lose their jobs permanently.
that's true of most technological advancements though. We can't just hold back technology because people used to do something that we figured out how to automate. Not to mention how dangerous driving really is as he brings up. Give it a hundred years and people will be looking back at the way people used to drive around by hand in a similar way to how construction workers at the turn of the last century would work in terrible conditions in factories where they'd regularly suffer from injuries. I mean like seriously, driving is one of if not the most dangerous activities that most people participate in, and a lot of us do it twice a day to commute to work. Let alone the people that you mention that do it on a daily basis for their work.
Self-Driving Cars should ONLY be accepted if: -there is a manual override for the self-driving car in case of electronic failure. -there is anti-hacking software to prevent a car from getting hacked (and the passengers kidnapped). -accident-prevention programming protects it's passengers over people on the road.
Manual override? Bad idea. Humans are slower than robots, so if you're going to get involved in an accident, the car will hit the kill switch before you can react. Anti-hacking software? Pipe dream. With quantum computers able to break all encryption, your network will get hacked, no matter what. Your data isn't secure anymore! Programming promoting passengers over pedestrians? The vehicle will not get into an accident with anyone (unless there is a fault that the machine can't control)
well, in the world we live in, your data IS not secure. but yeah, manual override HAS to be there in case of malfunction or dangerous misuse of technology by people. there is also the fact that with these cars, someone could know your every move by "simply" (probably not so simple but...) hacking the gps beacon that is sure to be there and track you; or the data just being available to companies that pay for it and can place even more ads tailored to you (helloooo even more focused publicity! think of it like your ads on your computer: you go to an online shop, you get the ads for all the great great type of products you went looking for etc etc)
John Whitesell A manual override is pointless,,by this time everyone would have forgotten how to drive.Just think about what has happened now with automatic gearbox, no one knows how to drive a manual(even u). They need to make sure each car can independently operate without a network as a back up system if the the network goes down. This independent system must be isolated or even hardwired to be separate so the car can still be functional without a network or if the network is hacked. Once any technology is prolific enough, hackers will target them. So security is a must.

Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has begun its fleet of Self Driving Uber vehicles this year. Its gone from rumor to reality. Each one of these vehicles is accompanied by a human safety driver in case of error. However the entire trip is autonomous. I grew up in Pittsburgh and cant wait to go home for a visit and have the experience first hand. Uber excited!
You should've also looked into the potential drawbacks. Safety: -Aside from glitches which you roughly mentioned, what about hacking? Viruses could cause massive havoc. - If there is an accident who gets blamed? Will car insurance exist? Economy: - Taxi drivers are already being outperformed by Uber but with self driving cars they'd become irrelevant. Bus drivers, subway operators, train operators and anyone in the transport business would lose their job. -Parking tickets and other fines actually contribute a lot to police funding. Without these and with the decrease in jobs taxes may need to be raised. -Car repair shops will also lose a lot of business and many will shut done. Environment -What resources will be used to create these cars? Most likely fossil fuels since green energy has proven to be too costly and ineffective. These are just a few points I could come up with from the top of my head.
I would come to agree on most of these however that last one is meh. You see cars already are mostly powered by fossil fuels and made of for example steel. This most likely wouldn't change with self-driving cars HOWEVER if it did it'd change for the better and change from fossil fuels to green energy. Then again as the car's interiors probably would become more luxurious so it may cost more resources for the interior. And this may also happen with the exterior, however I'd argue that exteriors of car's would become more luxurious whether self-driving ones are implemented fully or not at all because that's what everyone else see's BUT you when actually driving the damn thing. So you wanna look fancy. Anyways that's just my opinion on what the future holds
Just saying, buses and taxi's may still exist even though there are self driving cars because well, not everyone has the money to buy self driving cars, same as right now, not everyone has the money to buy a car so they use taxi's or buses, same as a world with self driving cars, people will take self driving taxi's or buses.
The possible answer to the question to "is it better to be in control with greater risk or surrender control with lesser risk" is that we kinda do that all the time. Would you rather drive, swim, take a boat across the ocean or take a plane (that you have no control over)? Most likely that individualist thought/question will lose to the alternative that will benefit the population because across the board, malfunctions will be very low overall. Most will have fail safe mechanisms in place anyway.

I guess the cars register pedestrians too, and simply stop if someone walks in front of them. The cars coordinate between each other, so no human with slow reflexes would cause an accident.
that's an idea, but dodging him by other mean are ideas as well, an automatic car would most likely simply stop, leaving you exposed to the criminal, to avoid it dodgin sideway to have the obstacle be a kid that would in front of it anyway.
Another thing to bring up is what if the car decides to take you through an awful neighbourhood and some gang fight breaks out? I don't want my car stoping at a stop sign
I'll take it a step further beyond just self-driving cars. A.I. and robots could also seriously change everything as far as how we approach work and could change how our economies work in the future as well, but one downside being it could almost completely eliminate a lot of different jobs and force a change to how our economies work today. Also, keep this kind of series up. I always love seeing other people speculating on where the future can go based on technology.
Sure, self driving cars sound awesome, but what if you enjoy driving? I commute early in yhe the morning, allowing be to avoid all the traffic stress. Pop on some tunes and put down the windows, and you got a really enjoyable drive. Would automation take away this simple pleasure? What about professional racecar drivers?

Your so Bias. Self driving cars are cool but when it comes down to the change in society to the point that Architects don't add parking lots on the properties they make isn't good. How bad will this affect "Manual" drivers? Many factors could play out. One similar situation which occurred in the 1910's and still is to this day is Jaywalking: blame the pedestrian, not the driver: It's your fault for playing on the typical horse smelted street you grew up in and yet; you suddenly get plowed by a speeding hunk of metal that a rich man couldn't operate properly or even safely. Take note that the DMV was founded in 1915. Also, the first gas-powered car was invented in 1886. The DMV at the time was only in one state of, one region of, one county in, one town that had a set of rules and guidelines which was Motor vehicle laws. All other parts of the country didn't have this yet so many, many, drove reckless for quite some time. What is my point? Autonomous car companies will eventually yet slowly attempt to eliminate the Driver. Not just that, Architects will soon change their building designs. Auto-mechanics may loose their jobs and carriers in the because of the lack of customers since the Driver is non-existent. Taxi drivers are out of the work force causing huge unemployment for major cities since many of these cities like New York, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo are dependent on Cab Companies due to tourism and also Bus drivers of all sorts. They have other means of transportation you may say but this will just stress those existing forms, look at Japan's railway infrastructure: Trains are always over-crowded. To have driver-less cars many urge for; you have to sacrifice what modern society is economically and culturally for change. I say no.
Also if the majority of the world is Self-driven it would be a matter of time until the young aren't taught how to drive because of ignorance which leads to many problems.
I'm not buying a self driving car. I enjoy driving and am perfectly willing to accept the risk of my injury owning one. Seriously me giving up my passion for cars is stupid.
How does the self driving car crash even work? 1) Car A is malfunctioning and stops communicating with other cars and following safety laws. 2)Cars B scenery picks up Car A, and warns other cars of incoming Car A. 3)All cars work together to avoid danger. 4) Human passengers call cops. 5) Car A is safe. Traffic is safe. It's literally the same premise as herd immunity except with cars. The less humans on the road, the safer the group is.
I agree with a concept like this, the danger is really, the system in the car failing, a single failure could be critical. For example, your car is on a high-way and supposed to notice a guard rail.. some malfunction somehow causes it to not notice it - and you die. Censor doesn't work - Car crashes into another. For some reason the part, technology, censor, or anything else malfunctions and your breaks or some other critical piece stop's working.. The list goes on. Technology would need to advance massively, and there would need to be proof of this. Our phones, computers, etc, would have to reach such an amazing level of convenience, whenever a phone was just recently produced with an explosive battery, do you really think people are trust worthy of something capable of killing you due to a "malfunction" like a car? Cars malfunction all the time, new and old, so right now, with current technology, its hard to find a solution that sounds practical, trusting technology to NEVER fail just sounds like a fairy-tail, and again, depending on the severity of that.. It can have deadly consequences. While we can implement better technology over time and make car malfunctions sounds pretty improbable, it is still a possibility, technology can fail, especially as it ages. While everyone can come up with solutions, it doesn't key in on practicality, or affordability, with multiple companies in competition for the future of cars, I'm sure they will all want to have their own technology (so they can profit from it etc.. as all businesses do). This would cause communication, and keeping cars on a huge network to be rather difficult, due to different companies wanting different things etc. Why should company A share his leading technology with company B? For a large network to be in sync? HA. Why would company B want to buy company A's technology if he were able to sell it.. For practicality to consumers? That gives company A a huge advantage, again, HA. I'm not saying it isn't the right option to go towards self-driving cars in the future, and I'm not saying there can't be precautions to practically make many things impossible, but no matter the low probability, it's still possible, but right now, affordability, practicality, and the reality of our situation means that vehicles that are capable of self-driving within the next 15-20 years will probably not be capable of having EVERY precaution, just for the sake of affordability, and the limitations of current technology, those fears will be common-place. I'm also not trying to say that this means that it wouldn't be safer etc, I am just pointing out an unfortunate flaw in the concept, money comes first, the consumer comes second. Its hard to trust a company with that belief to manufacturer something capable of ending your life due to a "failure".

Very thorough, but CGP Grey did a nice video on how self-driving cars could also dramatically reduce traffic. We also wouldn't need traffic lights since cars would be able to communicate with each other. Of course on such a broad topic it's near impossible to cover everything, but self-driving cars are just part of the change. Now that we have self driving vehicles, we can use those for factories or something. You won't need those human-driven mini trucks (what are they called)? anymore. They can be smaller since they don't need to house a human. Likewise, larger self driving cars (CGP Grey suggests we call them autos) could do manual work without the need of a human to employ them. Plows and other vehicles could be automated and redesigned for optimal efficiency without having to incorporate a human controller. All in all, it this was enjoyable, I just wanted to point out a few things you missed, but it's difficult to cover everything with such a broad topic. I hope this series continues!
I'm not gonna lie, I'd love the idea of living in a self driving RV that just ferries me around the world, waking up every day in a different state or even a different country sometimes while I relax and watch the world fly by. Make it electric and able to autonomously charge itself whenever needed and I'd be living the dream

That Merc was massive! Surely if most self-drive cars are being used to pick up and drop off then most of them would have one seat since most journeys are taken by individuals on their own. Unless they act like small busses running overlapping rides.
An interesting conflict will be when public transportation and taxi industries collide. Imagine if the bus system was replaced with a series of self driving cars that could come when called or scanned specific stops for people who lacked/lost their phone or other device. That would be almost identical to what driverless taxi companies seem to be headed towards. As far as city infrastructure, if cars go all electric, then buried roadways become far more practical due to lack of exhaust. Surface streets could be converted into all sorts of things if there is drastically reduced need for them.
The only way self-driving cars will be both safe and efficient will be when all people drive them, because they will all work together to eliminate accidents and therefore will allow for greater speeds.
If Self Driving Cars are to become popular in the future, they should also allow the option for a human to drive if the automated system fails or if the driver prefers to drive themselves ( if they are registered as a qualified driver with a license of course).
To add to your point of self-driving cars being personalized, I do think that there would be different options for different incomes and in turn the car that you rent out every day, as opposed to the car that you own, will be an example of class status. For example, there may be a bottom tier where a self-driving car is very basic, where there's no personalization/entertainment purposes. After this tier, there would be an option to personalize your own car to your desires (e.g. watching videos, having a comfortable bed, etc). The final tier is what celebrities would most likely afford, a personalized stretch limo of some sort, with all of the features of the middle tier packed into the last tier. However, there would also have to be higher roofs for these cars for easier movement between the facilities.
I think there will become a mandatory thing in the near future, once it becomes clear that the safety factor out weighs other arguments the government will make it mandatory. Anyone who still owns a manual controlled vehicle will face steep insurance cost since "Autos" make fewer mistakes than humans, they either won't need to be insured or can be insured for less. So people who just can't give up their car or motorcycle will probably have to also pay a fee from the government for the privilege of self driving.

Yes, even higher than today. Manually driven cars, motorcycles, etc will once again become the toys of the wealthy, as they were when cars were first invented. No one else will be able to afford them.
My biggest problem with self-driving cars comes down to an ethical question: suppose a self-driving car is put in a potential accident situation where it has to make a decision - make a move that saves the driver but kills an innocent bystander or save the bystander but kill the driver. Either way, programmers will have to deliberately program the system to let someone die if certain situations arise. Sure, we could argue that such a situation would be rare but what happens when they do occur?
In practice, that situation would never happen. Even if it did, the computer would have faultered anyway (to cause the accident) so it would have no control over who dies.
+Andrew Smith well, say it's still in the late tech adoption period. So many are on the road and many bugs are fixed, though some people are still driving normal cars. And some drunk goes on the wrong side of the road. The car can sense this, though it cannot go left, as that's the other lane, and it cannot just apply the brakes, as the drunk will continue on and hit them anyways. It's only choice is to dive right, however, there's a pedestrian right in the path it'd be required to go. Would the car spare the pedestrian, or the occupant?

Your video got me thinking. I could see a use for self driving tech as delivery trucks, or you could call up a pick up truck to get your stuff from "Home Owner MegaHell".
I think early acceptance of self-driving cars might come from very small cars that are not only driverless, but also passengerless, used for delivering packages or groceries, for instance, like what delivery drones are being developed to do. Imagine a car the size of a washing machine. These vehicles would be far less scary to society since not only do they carry no passengers that might get hurt in a collision, but could be purposefully built to be flimsy, with light plastic shell bodies that would cause little damage in a crash. After all, protecting groceries is not as big a priority as protecting pedestrians or other cars. Also, since they would most likely travel in suburban areas, high speeds are not a priority, nor a potential liability in case of an accident.
The idea of not owning a car and having it be this big network is bullcrap for me. I want to OWN my car. Put my stuff in it, and the like. I hate having to rely on other people to get around.
My issues with self-driving cars are as follows: As a "Car Guy", I love the motor vehicle and the simple zen-like joy of driving. Sure not *every* drive is a joy, and commuting in heavy traffic is irritating, but the drivea that *are* make it all worthwhile. There is something to be said for carving through the corners of a narrow mountain road in a GT car, or going mudding in a jeep and coming home so filthy you have to be washed off with a hose in the driveway. Most seem to think "because I enjoy it" isn't justification enough. That attitude of safety over fun has lead us steadily further into a bleak and depressing future. The second big issue is the loss of an entire sector of steady middle-class employment. Trucker is the most common decent paying job in the country, and even this one step into automation will put millions out of work with nothing to replace their former jobs. Many people in transportation live inland, in areas where their aren't any real alternatives; It's trucking or McDonalds. Speaking of employment, do you seriously think we'll be allowed to sleep in self-driving cars? Remember when airlines started offering wi-fi and now employers suddenly expect that what was downtime will be used for "productive" work? (My boss is one of those assholes who already expects me to answer my phone even when I'm driving). No! Greed knows no limits. We'll be expected to work even harder because our isolation is not enforced.
Economically speaking, today's economic systems just don't work in the self driving future. All the technology that allows self driving cars to exist will be implemented in many other ways. How much faster, cheaper and more sanitary would a fully automated McDonalds be? I work in a warehouse and people run in to things on the Forklifts all the time. That wouldn't happen anywhere near so much with automated lifts. By the time self driving cars start changing the infrastructure of cities, automation will have changed entirely the way we get work done. All this leads to unrecoverable loss of employment. In today's economic systems that would lead to a crippling negative feedback loop. Loss of jobs leads to decreased income for companies who then can't afford the tech that's eliminating the jobs. Clearly future economic systems will have to adapt to what is an inevitable change. Automation implemented correctly has always led to safer, faster and cheaper ways of doing things. Not only should automation take those jobs away. We should find ways to accommodate that transition without negatively impacting peoples lives. This coming period of change is going to be the hard part. Especially in the political world.
lordundeadrat People have proposed a universal basic income. But it's probably not going to be until we're dead that the mere idea of not having to slave over a machine or stove over a lifetime will be accepted. It goes against what people like to hold onto as their perception of America. I suspect Europe and Asia will flourish though while we still battle over healthcare and worker's rights.

Even if you don't reduce your commute, a self driving car can give you time as this video said, to do other things reducing said stress. Those other channels I highly recommend!
I think that self driving cars will present a lot of new ideas to world, and other applications like for aircraft, or ships presents a lot of interesting things that could easily change.
I came here from AHH. This is interesting, and there are a lot of advantages (and downsides) you didn’t get to talking about too. Cars are used for far more than transportation of one to ten humans; self-driving cargo trucks would also be pretty revolutionary. I would be interested in watching more of this, but as I said I came over from AHH and my opinion might not be typical of your current viewership. My main criticism of the episode is that you said “as always” before what was clearly the planned catchphrase of the series. I’m not sure it makes sense to say “always” there on the very first episode.

Will we have Separate Roads, Highways to Drive on or even Special Raceways to Drive our Muscle/Sport Cars on? 10:50 the Psychology Today article (which simply quoted the Census) says the average commute time is 25.4'. But the narrator says it's 25.4 ' PER DAY. You need to DOUBLE the commute time to get the daily time req'd.
This technology sure has some mountains to climb and in multiple ways before it should ever be allowed to be used... 1.) For Argument: "Driving will be safer!" - Consideration: In 2014, the U.S. population was roughly 318,600,000 (according to both U.S. Census and World Bank statistics). In that same year, we had 33,736 automobile deaths. That equates to about 0.01% of the entire U.S. population. So this begs the question, "Should safety be prioritized over freedoms?" If you answer "Safety," then everyone loses because of the requirements necessary to achieve such a safe outcome. We're talking about technological interactions that would be ethically questionable at best, systems meant solely for restricting human control, all of which would use technologies that can't account for every scenario human drivers deal with daily. All of this is assuming the recent incident with Uber's self-driving disaster isn't a barometer for tomorrow's supposed "innovative virtues." (Referring to the death of a pedestrian who was recently killed while the car was in automated mode.) 2.) For Argument: "The government will someday mandate this." - Consideration: They'll outlaw guns long before they outlaw manual-operation of automobiles, regardless of any amendments contained within the Constitution. For this technology to take off, basic buy-in will need to happen first. They're nowhere near having full buy-in by consumers and since they already realize this, companies pushing this technology have decided to lure consuming companies into their enchantments by enticing them with fleet opportunities (i.e. - Wal-Mart and a few others who have recently purchased X amount of the self-driving semis). Taking it a step further, don't gloss over the number of manually-operated automobiles already on the road (some new, some old), the number in dealership lots who have major inventories to sell-off (again, some new and some old), and the amount of manually-operated automobiles currently in warehouses, being produced via annual dealership demands, or individual orders being produced. The number of years it will take to get all these off the streets is likely to take much more than 20 years. Adding to this, ask yourself, "Since the government is subsidizing the research going into this technology, does that mean they're also planning on subsidizing the purchases of these mandated automobiles?" You better hope they do because if they ever decide to force you to buy a car that meets autonomous requirements, that might cause problems since the very thing they would be forcing you to have would be the very thing likely causing many people to be unable to afford them due to the resulting job losses. (Then there's the "Encroachment Tactic" where they gradually turn their automated inch into a fully-automated mile via piece-by-piece, which will take even longer to do.) Last but not least, full automation will sometimes simply not work. You have people in the country, small towns, suburbs, etc. who have specific requirements where full control is absolutely necessary, you also have situations where you need to get out of a location quickly (i.e. - crime, riots, fires, wife giving birth, etc.)... 3.) For Argument: "It will eventually be too expensive to have a manually-operated automobile." - Consideration: Anyone who says something like this with insurance rates in mind needs to reexamine how the concept of insurance works since it's a model that bases individual costs on total population outcomes. The total is shared by all. If these autonomous automobiles reduce accidents, then technically, they will reduce rates, too, due to insurance providers having fewer claims. If owning a manually-operated automobile becomes too expensive for other reasons besides insurance, then *everyone* needs to worry because it represents a bigger problem: Conspiring manufacturers who likely collude with the government...but like insurance commissioners, automobile sales isn't something that is completely unregulated, either (i.e. - DMV, FTC, various organizations and departments who lobby for consumers). Funny enough, the manufacturers will likely own some level of expense when consumers look to them for various liability concerns, which the manufacturers will do everything they can to avoid (see the California case where they've been trying to figure out some of the insurance issues this technology introduces). As a result, the manufacturers will likely be forced to hire more people to accommodate technical aspects of these automobiles, which they'll use to bump costs up or else hike certain systems of coverage we haven't even seen yet--either way, the consumer will be the loser in the end. 4.) For Argument: "This is just like the horse-and-buggy times." - Consideration: Anyone that uses this same tired argument is myopic. Back in those days, people gave up the horse for something that had better capabilities, longer range, more power and sacrificed no control for a new mode of transportation that used technology that wasn't bulletproof. If we're going for safety, we need to be bulletproof, right? This technology has been out and about now for what, 3? 4 years? And we've already seen more than a few deaths with it...so no, this isn't within a quarter-mile of being equivalent to the horse-and-buggy exodus. 5.) For Argument: "This will let you do more stuff when on the road." - Consideration: Said time efficiency will also result in your employer expecting you to do work stuff during personal time(s) or start work well before you get to the office, especially if you're running late, which will likely give way to new penalizing systems: Your daily travel routes (from home-to-work, from work-to-home, and yes, even your lunch runs, etc.) will all be timed, then your time(s) will be lodged into an employer's central travel database, and finally, any deviations or deficiencies from said allotted time averages will then result in various forms of either financial penalty, reduced insurance discounts or higher insurance premiums--because yes, you'll have insurance even with these cars--expanded employer expectations, etc. 6.) For Argument: "You'll still be able to drive your manually-operated automobile but you'll have to use a race track." - Consideration: Not everyone has access to a race track, not everyone has an automobile trailer, and I'm also betting that the automated technology will still lack specific abilities to properly park you for the proper offloading requirements. I haven't even graced the economic issues this technology represents nor have I discussed the colluding intentions (invisible hand) being exercised by our government in doing everything they can to take your keys away and have even more control over your daily lives... All of this could be fixed if a system was devised that permitted *only those with disabilities* to be the *only* users allowed to use this technology via a new licensing system. Everyone else would be outlawed from its use, individuals and companies alike because the gains don't outweigh the costs (financial and otherwise). Some disruption can be good, but this isn't one of those times. Just my opinion.
The thing I'm worried about is the transition to this new future. Without an entire movement that people stop driving themselves, one human driver could play havoc with the self driving network and thus safety would become a major issue. Ehh that's how i see it.
Personally I'm looking forward to self driving vans/rvs that way when i'm on a family vacation we can all just pile in to the one thing and play cards for the entire trip lol
This all sounds well and good, but I worry that the shared self driving car is going to go the way of the public bathroom. It would just suck to call up a self driving car and then find the interior full with "mystery stains".
I love my car. it's one of my last freedoms. I love being able to choose roads right away without messing with a GPS, feeling the road under my hands and feet... I just want to be free. Personally, taking that away and strapping me to a robot is the same as putting me in a cubicle in the office again.
So I'm a car guy and I like driving, this feels like a sad thing :( though I do understand their need. Regardless though, I ain't gonna give up my non-self driving car.
I'm unconvinced by the idea of not owning your own car so much... I mean, what you describe is basically a taxi service without some guy you have to awkwardly converse with. Uber are big on it because it saves them having to pay driver wages so they're gonna LOVE it! Obviously, there will be people who do use things like uber and don't own their own car but I can't see it being what most people will opt for. For a start, say if everyone or even the vast majority of people went for this non-owning service. There will either be waiting times for a car to pick you up during the peak times. (commuter hours ironically) which means people are going to be late for work or having to wait outside their offices after work, or if there are enough cars to accommodate that, then there will be a whole lot of cars doing nothing for the grand portion of the day which I guess is no real bad thing but then I fail to see how that is better than people just owning their own cars. I think people will still primarily be owning their own cars. But can certainly see taxi services introducing self driving cars far quicker than the average consumer.
The only problem with this idea is what happens to racing. So much history of the car and motorbikes is due to racing. The rush of speed, the need for control and so many other factors lead to so many changes to vehicles and continue to this day. With self driving cars what happens to the thrill?
I wonder if people will end up living in a private car with a mattress inside as a way to save on rent while working an office job. Just pay to rent storage space for your stuff for several months out of the year, and only take an actual apartment during part of the year.

What happens when someone messes up the car (drink, being drunk, etc)? An uber driver knows if you messed up their car, and cleans it if needed. Another question is what happens when a car breaks down, or when a person can only afford a car that has a 50/50 shot of something messing up every time it turns on Something else to add, how are self driving cars handling things like hydroplaning or ice
Should mention security (hacking) as a concern, and the event of malfunction. The driver needs to be ready to take over in a moments notice or the car ready to pull over when control is lost via damage or loss of signal etc.
This guys forgot that people also like driving themselves, owns classic cars, and some people want gasoline cars and some people want electric cars. That is World that we lived in.

The future of self driving cars is going to be great for huge corporations like Tesla, which will provide cars, Google, which will write the code and Uber, which will manage the fleet, however it is going to be very bad news for regular working people like taxi drivers, truck drivers and bus drivers who will lose their jobs permanently.
that's true of most technological advancements though. We can't just hold back technology because people used to do something that we figured out how to automate. Not to mention how dangerous driving really is as he brings up. Give it a hundred years and people will be looking back at the way people used to drive around by hand in a similar way to how construction workers at the turn of the last century would work in terrible conditions in factories where they'd regularly suffer from injuries. I mean like seriously, driving is one of if not the most dangerous activities that most people participate in, and a lot of us do it twice a day to commute to work. Let alone the people that you mention that do it on a daily basis for their work.
And I wont hear about Uber drivers making a pass at their passengers, and getting assault charges.

Self-Driving Cars should ONLY be accepted if:
-there is a manual override for the self-driving car in case of electronic failure.
-there is anti-hacking software to prevent a car from getting hacked (and the passengers kidnapped).
-accident-prevention programming protects it's passengers over people on the road.
Manual override? Bad idea. Humans are slower than robots, so if you're going to get involved in an accident, the car will hit the kill switch before you can react.
Anti-hacking software? Pipe dream. With quantum computers able to break all encryption, your network will get hacked, no matter what. Your data isn't secure anymore!
Programming promoting passengers over pedestrians? The vehicle will not get into an accident with anyone (unless there is a fault that the machine can't control)
well, in the world we live in, your data IS not secure. but yeah, manual override HAS to be there in case of malfunction or dangerous misuse of technology by people.
there is also the fact that with these cars, someone could know your every move by "simply" (probably not so simple but...) hacking the gps beacon that is sure to be there and track you; or the data just being available to companies that pay for it and can place even more ads tailored to you (helloooo even more focused publicity! think of it like your ads on your computer: you go to an online shop, you get the ads for all the great great type of products you went looking for etc etc)

They need to make sure each car can independently operate without a network as a back up system if the the network goes down.
This independent system must be isolated or even hardwired to be separate so the car can still be functional without a network or if the network is hacked.
Once any technology is prolific enough, hackers will target them. So security is a must.

I would buy self driving car but not a car that has google and a big ass camera on it.
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has begun its fleet of Self Driving Uber vehicles this year. Its gone from rumor to reality. Each one of these vehicles is accompanied by a human safety driver in case of error. However the entire trip is autonomous. I grew up in Pittsburgh and cant wait to go home for a visit and have the experience first hand. Uber excited!

You should've also looked into the potential drawbacks.
Safety:
-Aside from glitches which you roughly mentioned, what about hacking? Viruses could cause massive havoc.
- If there is an accident who gets blamed? Will car insurance exist?
Economy:
- Taxi drivers are already being outperformed by Uber but with self driving cars they'd become irrelevant.
Bus drivers, subway operators, train operators and anyone in the transport business would lose their job.
-Parking tickets and other fines actually contribute a lot to police funding. Without these and with the decrease in jobs taxes may need to be raised.
-Car repair shops will also lose a lot of business and many will shut done.
Environment
-What resources will be used to create these cars? Most likely fossil fuels since green energy has proven to be too costly and ineffective.
These are just a few points I could come up with from the top of my head.
Some points an actually smart person would say. Automated devices and vehicles are cool, but as you state, what about the others earning a living.
I would come to agree on most of these however that last one is meh. You see cars already are mostly powered by fossil fuels and made of for example steel. This most likely wouldn't change with self-driving cars HOWEVER if it did it'd change for the better and change from fossil fuels to green energy. Then again as the car's interiors probably would become more luxurious so it may cost more resources for the interior. And this may also happen with the exterior, however I'd argue that exteriors of car's would become more luxurious whether self-driving ones are implemented fully or not at all because that's what everyone else see's BUT you when actually driving the damn thing. So you wanna look fancy.
Anyways that's just my opinion on what the future holds
Just saying, buses and taxi's may still exist even though there are self driving cars because well, not everyone has the money to buy self driving cars, same as right now, not everyone has the money to buy a car so they use taxi's or buses, same as a world with self driving cars, people will take self driving taxi's or buses.

As a pedestrian, and having many close calls with the bumpers of a car or being sideswiped by car, I am all for autonomous vehicles to be a standard.
The possible answer to the question to "is it better to be in control with greater risk or surrender control with lesser risk" is that we kinda do that all the time. Would you rather drive, swim, take a boat across the ocean or take a plane (that you have no control over)? Most likely that individualist thought/question will lose to the alternative that will benefit the population because across the board, malfunctions will be very low overall. Most will have fail safe mechanisms in place anyway.

I guess the cars register pedestrians too, and simply stop if someone walks in front of them. The cars coordinate between each other, so no human with slow reflexes would cause an accident.

I'll take it a step further beyond just self-driving cars. A.I. and robots could also seriously change everything as far as how we approach work and could change how our economies work in the future as well, but one downside being it could almost completely eliminate a lot of different jobs and force a change to how our economies work today.
Also, keep this kind of series up. I always love seeing other people speculating on where the future can go based on technology.

Sure, self driving cars sound awesome, but what if you enjoy driving? I commute early in yhe the morning, allowing be to avoid all the traffic stress. Pop on some tunes and put down the windows, and you got a really enjoyable drive. Would automation take away this simple pleasure? What about professional racecar drivers?

Your so Bias. Self driving cars are cool but when it comes down to the change in society to the point that Architects don't add parking lots on the properties they make isn't good. How bad will this affect "Manual" drivers? Many factors could play out.
One similar situation which occurred in the 1910's and still is to this day is Jaywalking: blame the pedestrian, not the driver: It's your fault for playing on the typical horse smelted street you grew up in and yet; you suddenly get plowed by a speeding hunk of metal that a rich man couldn't operate properly or even safely. Take note that the DMV was founded in 1915. Also, the first gas-powered car was invented in 1886. The DMV at the time was only in one state of, one region of, one county in, one town that had a set of rules and guidelines which was Motor vehicle laws. All other parts of the country didn't have this yet so many, many, drove reckless for quite some time.
What is my point? Autonomous car companies will eventually yet slowly attempt to eliminate the Driver. Not just that, Architects will soon change their building designs. Auto-mechanics may loose their jobs and carriers in the because of the lack of customers since the Driver is non-existent. Taxi drivers are out of the work force causing huge unemployment for major cities since many of these cities like New York, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo are dependent on Cab Companies due to tourism and also Bus drivers of all sorts. They have other means of transportation you may say but this will just stress those existing forms, look at Japan's railway infrastructure: Trains are always over-crowded.
To have driver-less cars many urge for; you have to sacrifice what modern society is economically and culturally for change. I say no.
Also if the majority of the world is Self-driven it would be a matter of time until the young aren't taught how to drive because of ignorance which leads to many problems.

I'm not buying a self driving car. I enjoy driving and am perfectly willing to accept the risk of my injury owning one. Seriously me giving up my passion for cars is stupid.
How does the self driving car crash even work?
1) Car A is malfunctioning and stops communicating with other cars and following safety laws.
2)Cars B scenery picks up Car A, and warns other cars of incoming Car A.
3)All cars work together to avoid danger.
4) Human passengers call cops.
5) Car A is safe. Traffic is safe.
It's literally the same premise as herd immunity except with cars. The less humans on the road, the safer the group is.

I agree with a concept like this, the danger is really, the system in the car failing, a single failure could be critical.
For example, your car is on a high-way and supposed to notice a guard rail.. some malfunction somehow causes it to not notice it - and you die.
Censor doesn't work - Car crashes into another.
For some reason the part, technology, censor, or anything else malfunctions and your breaks or some other critical piece stop's working.. The list goes on.
Technology would need to advance massively, and there would need to be proof of this. Our phones, computers, etc, would have to reach such an amazing level of convenience, whenever a phone was just recently produced with an explosive battery, do you really think people are trust worthy of something capable of killing you due to a "malfunction" like a car?
Cars malfunction all the time, new and old, so right now, with current technology, its hard to find a solution that sounds practical, trusting technology to NEVER fail just sounds like a fairy-tail, and again, depending on the severity of that.. It can have deadly consequences.
While we can implement better technology over time and make car malfunctions sounds pretty improbable, it is still a possibility, technology can fail, especially as it ages.
While everyone can come up with solutions, it doesn't key in on practicality, or affordability, with multiple companies in competition for the future of cars, I'm sure they will all want to have their own technology (so they can profit from it etc.. as all businesses do).
This would cause communication, and keeping cars on a huge network to be rather difficult, due to different companies wanting different things etc.
Why should company A share his leading technology with company B? For a large network to be in sync? HA.
Why would company B want to buy company A's technology if he were able to sell it.. For practicality to consumers? That gives company A a huge advantage, again, HA.
I'm not saying it isn't the right option to go towards self-driving cars in the future, and I'm not saying there can't be precautions to practically make many things impossible, but no matter the low probability, it's still possible, but right now, affordability, practicality, and the reality of our situation means that vehicles that are capable of self-driving within the next 15-20 years will probably not be capable of having EVERY precaution, just for the sake of affordability, and the limitations of current technology, those fears will be common-place.
I'm also not trying to say that this means that it wouldn't be safer etc, I am just pointing out an unfortunate flaw in the concept, money comes first, the consumer comes second.
Its hard to trust a company with that belief to manufacturer something capable of ending your life due to a "failure".

Very thorough, but CGP Grey did a nice video on how self-driving cars could also dramatically reduce traffic. We also wouldn't need traffic lights since cars would be able to communicate with each other.
Of course on such a broad topic it's near impossible to cover everything, but self-driving cars are just part of the change. Now that we have self driving vehicles, we can use those for factories or something. You won't need those human-driven mini trucks (what are they called)? anymore. They can be smaller since they don't need to house a human.
Likewise, larger self driving cars (CGP Grey suggests we call them autos) could do manual work without the need of a human to employ them. Plows and other vehicles could be automated and redesigned for optimal efficiency without having to incorporate a human controller.
All in all, it this was enjoyable, I just wanted to point out a few things you missed, but it's difficult to cover everything with such a broad topic. I hope this series continues!

Sure the tech is cool but the one thing i enjoy more than anything is driving my 1965 v8 mustang coupe that took me 2 years to restore.
I'm not gonna lie, I'd love the idea of living in a self driving RV that just ferries me around the world, waking up every day in a different state or even a different country sometimes while I relax and watch the world fly by. Make it electric and able to autonomously charge itself whenever needed and I'd be living the dream

An interesting conflict will be when public transportation and taxi industries collide. Imagine if the bus system was replaced with a series of self driving cars that could come when called or scanned specific stops for people who lacked/lost their phone or other device. That would be almost identical to what driverless taxi companies seem to be headed towards.
As far as city infrastructure, if cars go all electric, then buried roadways become far more practical due to lack of exhaust. Surface streets could be converted into all sorts of things if there is drastically reduced need for them.

The only way self-driving cars will be both safe and efficient will be when all people drive them, because they will all work together to eliminate accidents and therefore will allow for greater speeds.

If Self Driving Cars are to become popular in the future, they should also allow the option for a human to drive if the automated system fails or if the driver prefers to drive themselves ( if they are registered as a qualified driver with a license of course).

To add to your point of self-driving cars being personalized, I do think that there would be different options for different incomes and in turn the car that you rent out every day, as opposed to the car that you own, will be an example of class status. For example, there may be a bottom tier where a self-driving car is very basic, where there's no personalization/entertainment purposes. After this tier, there would be an option to personalize your own car to your desires (e.g. watching videos, having a comfortable bed, etc). The final tier is what celebrities would most likely afford, a personalized stretch limo of some sort, with all of the features of the middle tier packed into the last tier. However, there would also have to be higher roofs for these cars for easier movement between the facilities.

I think there will become a mandatory thing in the near future, once it becomes clear that the safety factor out weighs other arguments the government will make it mandatory. Anyone who still owns a manual controlled vehicle will face steep insurance cost since "Autos" make fewer mistakes than humans, they either won't need to be insured or can be insured for less. So people who just can't give up their car or motorcycle will probably have to also pay a fee from the government for the privilege of self driving.

Or they'll just pay higher insurance rates. Yes, even higher than today. Manually driven cars, motorcycles, etc will once again become the toys of the wealthy, as they were when cars were first invented. No one else will be able to afford them.
My biggest problem with self-driving cars comes down to an ethical question: suppose a self-driving car is put in a potential accident situation where it has to make a decision - make a move that saves the driver but kills an innocent bystander or save the bystander but kill the driver.
Either way, programmers will have to deliberately program the system to let someone die if certain situations arise. Sure, we could argue that such a situation would be rare but what happens when they do occur?
In practice, that situation would never happen. Even if it did, the computer would have faultered anyway (to cause the accident) so it would have no control over who dies.
+Andrew Smith well, say it's still in the late tech adoption period. So many are on the road and many bugs are fixed, though some people are still driving normal cars. And some drunk goes on the wrong side of the road. The car can sense this, though it cannot go left, as that's the other lane, and it cannot just apply the brakes, as the drunk will continue on and hit them anyways. It's only choice is to dive right, however, there's a pedestrian right in the path it'd be required to go. Would the car spare the pedestrian, or the occupant?

I don't think I'll ever get into self driving cars, but the idea of less idiots trying to kill me on my motorcycle sounds nice.

Your video got me thinking. I could see a use for self driving tech as delivery trucks, or you could call up a pick up truck to get your stuff from "Home Owner MegaHell".
I think early acceptance of self-driving cars might come from very small cars that are not only driverless, but also passengerless, used for delivering packages or groceries, for instance, like what delivery drones are being developed to do. Imagine a car the size of a washing machine. These vehicles would be far less scary to society since not only do they carry no passengers that might get hurt in a collision, but could be purposefully built to be flimsy, with light plastic shell bodies that would cause little damage in a crash. After all, protecting groceries is not as big a priority as protecting pedestrians or other cars. Also, since they would most likely travel in suburban areas, high speeds are not a priority, nor a potential liability in case of an accident.
I will never give up my driving.

The idea of not owning a car and having it be this big network is bullcrap for me. I want to OWN my car. Put my stuff in it, and the like. I hate having to rely on other people to get around.
My issues with self-driving cars are as follows:
As a "Car Guy", I love the motor vehicle and the simple zen-like joy of driving. Sure not *every* drive is a joy, and commuting in heavy traffic is irritating, but the drivea that *are* make it all worthwhile. There is something to be said for carving through the corners of a narrow mountain road in a GT car, or going mudding in a jeep and coming home so filthy you have to be washed off with a hose in the driveway. Most seem to think "because I enjoy it" isn't justification enough. That attitude of safety over fun has lead us steadily further into a bleak and depressing future.
The second big issue is the loss of an entire sector of steady middle-class employment. Trucker is the most common decent paying job in the country, and even this one step into automation will put millions out of work with nothing to replace their former jobs. Many people in transportation live inland, in areas where their aren't any real alternatives; It's trucking or McDonalds.
Speaking of employment, do you seriously think we'll be allowed to sleep in self-driving cars? Remember when airlines started offering wi-fi and now employers suddenly expect that what was downtime will be used for "productive" work? (My boss is one of those assholes who already expects me to answer my phone even when I'm driving). No! Greed knows no limits. We'll be expected to work even harder because our isolation is not enforced.
Economically speaking, today's economic systems just don't work in the self driving future. All the technology that allows self driving cars to exist will be implemented in many other ways. How much faster, cheaper and more sanitary would a fully automated McDonalds be? I work in a warehouse and people run in to things on the Forklifts all the time. That wouldn't happen anywhere near so much with automated lifts.
By the time self driving cars start changing the infrastructure of cities, automation will have changed entirely the way we get work done. All this leads to unrecoverable loss of employment. In today's economic systems that would lead to a crippling negative feedback loop. Loss of jobs leads to decreased income for companies who then can't afford the tech that's eliminating the jobs. Clearly future economic systems will have to adapt to what is an inevitable change.
Automation implemented correctly has always led to safer, faster and cheaper ways of doing things. Not only should automation take those jobs away. We should find ways to accommodate that transition without negatively impacting peoples lives. This coming period of change is going to be the hard part. Especially in the political world.

But it's probably not going to be until we're dead that the mere idea of not having to slave over a machine or stove over a lifetime will be accepted. It goes against what people like to hold onto as their perception of America. I suspect Europe and Asia will flourish though while we still battle over healthcare and worker's rights.

Two other great video's that discuss the benefits would be CGPGrey in regards to how self driving cars will help end traffic jams, gridlock, etc and the other would be from the Vlogbrothers on how limiting commuting times improves health! Even if you don't reduce your commute, a self driving car can give you time as this video said, to do other things reducing said stress. Those other channels I highly recommend!
I think that self driving cars will present a lot of new ideas to world, and other applications like for aircraft, or ships presents a lot of interesting things that could easily change.

I came here from AHH. This is interesting, and there are a lot of advantages (and downsides) you didn’t get to talking about too. Cars are used for far more than transportation of one to ten humans; self-driving cargo trucks would also be pretty revolutionary.

My main criticism of the episode is that you said “as always” before what was clearly the planned catchphrase of the series. I’m not sure it makes sense to say “always” there on the very first episode.

10:50 the Psychology Today article (which simply quoted the Census) says the average commute time is 25.4'. But the narrator says it's 25.4 ' PER DAY. You need to DOUBLE the commute time to get the daily time req'd.
This technology sure has some mountains to climb and in multiple ways before it should ever be allowed to be used...
1.) For Argument: "Driving will be safer!" - Consideration: In 2014, the U.S. population was roughly 318,600,000 (according to both U.S. Census and World Bank statistics). In that same year, we had 33,736 automobile deaths. That equates to about 0.01% of the entire U.S. population. So this begs the question, "Should safety be prioritized over freedoms?" If you answer "Safety," then everyone loses because of the requirements necessary to achieve such a safe outcome. We're talking about technological interactions that would be ethically questionable at best, systems meant solely for restricting human control, all of which would use technologies that can't account for every scenario human drivers deal with daily. All of this is assuming the recent incident with Uber's self-driving disaster isn't a barometer for tomorrow's supposed "innovative virtues." (Referring to the death of a pedestrian who was recently killed while the car was in automated mode.)
2.) For Argument: "The government will someday mandate this." - Consideration: They'll outlaw guns long before they outlaw manual-operation of automobiles, regardless of any amendments contained within the Constitution. For this technology to take off, basic buy-in will need to happen first. They're nowhere near having full buy-in by consumers and since they already realize this, companies pushing this technology have decided to lure consuming companies into their enchantments by enticing them with fleet opportunities (i.e. - Wal-Mart and a few others who have recently purchased X amount of the self-driving semis). Taking it a step further, don't gloss over the number of manually-operated automobiles already on the road (some new, some old), the number in dealership lots who have major inventories to sell-off (again, some new and some old), and the amount of manually-operated automobiles currently in warehouses, being produced via annual dealership demands, or individual orders being produced. The number of years it will take to get all these off the streets is likely to take much more than 20 years. Adding to this, ask yourself, "Since the government is subsidizing the research going into this technology, does that mean they're also planning on subsidizing the purchases of these mandated automobiles?" You better hope they do because if they ever decide to force you to buy a car that meets autonomous requirements, that might cause problems since the very thing they would be forcing you to have would be the very thing likely causing many people to be unable to afford them due to the resulting job losses. (Then there's the "Encroachment Tactic" where they gradually turn their automated inch into a fully-automated mile via piece-by-piece, which will take even longer to do.) Last but not least, full automation will sometimes simply not work. You have people in the country, small towns, suburbs, etc. who have specific requirements where full control is absolutely necessary, you also have situations where you need to get out of a location quickly (i.e. - crime, riots, fires, wife giving birth, etc.)...
3.) For Argument: "It will eventually be too expensive to have a manually-operated automobile." - Consideration: Anyone who says something like this with insurance rates in mind needs to reexamine how the concept of insurance works since it's a model that bases individual costs on total population outcomes. The total is shared by all. If these autonomous automobiles reduce accidents, then technically, they will reduce rates, too, due to insurance providers having fewer claims. If owning a manually-operated automobile becomes too expensive for other reasons besides insurance, then *everyone* needs to worry because it represents a bigger problem: Conspiring manufacturers who likely collude with the government...but like insurance commissioners, automobile sales isn't something that is completely unregulated, either (i.e. - DMV, FTC, various organizations and departments who lobby for consumers). Funny enough, the manufacturers will likely own some level of expense when consumers look to them for various liability concerns, which the manufacturers will do everything they can to avoid (see the California case where they've been trying to figure out some of the insurance issues this technology introduces). As a result, the manufacturers will likely be forced to hire more people to accommodate technical aspects of these automobiles, which they'll use to bump costs up or else hike certain systems of coverage we haven't even seen yet--either way, the consumer will be the loser in the end.
4.) For Argument: "This is just like the horse-and-buggy times." - Consideration: Anyone that uses this same tired argument is myopic. Back in those days, people gave up the horse for something that had better capabilities, longer range, more power and sacrificed no control for a new mode of transportation that used technology that wasn't bulletproof. If we're going for safety, we need to be bulletproof, right? This technology has been out and about now for what, 3? 4 years? And we've already seen more than a few deaths with it...so no, this isn't within a quarter-mile of being equivalent to the horse-and-buggy exodus.
5.) For Argument: "This will let you do more stuff when on the road." - Consideration: Said time efficiency will also result in your employer expecting you to do work stuff during personal time(s) or start work well before you get to the office, especially if you're running late, which will likely give way to new penalizing systems: Your daily travel routes (from home-to-work, from work-to-home, and yes, even your lunch runs, etc.) will all be timed, then your time(s) will be lodged into an employer's central travel database, and finally, any deviations or deficiencies from said allotted time averages will then result in various forms of either financial penalty, reduced insurance discounts or higher insurance premiums--because yes, you'll have insurance even with these cars--expanded employer expectations, etc.
6.) For Argument: "You'll still be able to drive your manually-operated automobile but you'll have to use a race track." - Consideration: Not everyone has access to a race track, not everyone has an automobile trailer, and I'm also betting that the automated technology will still lack specific abilities to properly park you for the proper offloading requirements.
I haven't even graced the economic issues this technology represents nor have I discussed the colluding intentions (invisible hand) being exercised by our government in doing everything they can to take your keys away and have even more control over your daily lives...
All of this could be fixed if a system was devised that permitted *only those with disabilities* to be the *only* users allowed to use this technology via a new licensing system. Everyone else would be outlawed from its use, individuals and companies alike because the gains don't outweigh the costs (financial and otherwise). Some disruption can be good, but this isn't one of those times.
Just my opinion.

The thing I'm worried about is the transition to this new future. Without an entire movement that people stop driving themselves, one human driver could play havoc with the self driving network and thus safety would become a major issue. Ehh that's how i see it.
Personally I'm looking forward to self driving vans/rvs that way when i'm on a family vacation we can all just pile in to the one thing and play cards for the entire trip lol

This all sounds well and good, but I worry that the shared self driving car is going to go the way of the public bathroom. It would just suck to call up a self driving car and then find the interior full with "mystery stains".
I love my car. it's one of my last freedoms. I love being able to choose roads right away without messing with a GPS, feeling the road under my hands and feet... I just want to be free.
Personally, taking that away and strapping me to a robot is the same as putting me in a cubicle in the office again.

I'm unconvinced by the idea of not owning your own car so much... I mean, what you describe is basically a taxi service without some guy you have to awkwardly converse with. Uber are big on it because it saves them having to pay driver wages so they're gonna LOVE it!
Obviously, there will be people who do use things like uber and don't own their own car but I can't see it being what most people will opt for. For a start, say if everyone or even the vast majority of people went for this non-owning service. There will either be waiting times for a car to pick you up during the peak times. (commuter hours ironically) which means people are going to be late for work or having to wait outside their offices after work, or if there are enough cars to accommodate that, then there will be a whole lot of cars doing nothing for the grand portion of the day which I guess is no real bad thing but then I fail to see how that is better than people just owning their own cars.
I think people will still primarily be owning their own cars. But can certainly see taxi services introducing self driving cars far quicker than the average consumer.
The only problem with this idea is what happens to racing. So much history of the car and motorbikes is due to racing. The rush of speed, the need for control and so many other factors lead to so many changes to vehicles and continue to this day. With self driving cars what happens to the thrill?

I wonder if people will end up living in a private car with a mattress inside as a way to save on rent while working an office job. Just pay to rent storage space for your stuff for several months out of the year, and only take an actual apartment during part of the year.

Here is a question for the not owning a car. What happens when someone messes up the car (drink, being drunk, etc)?
An uber driver knows if you messed up their car, and cleans it if needed.
Another question is what happens when a car breaks down, or when a person can only afford a car that has a 50/50 shot of something messing up every time it turns on

Should mention security (hacking) as a concern, and the event of malfunction. The driver needs to be ready to take over in a moments notice or the car ready to pull over when control is lost via damage or loss of signal etc.
