      @@zimri-lim8254the bbc had a very big influence on Brexit if it was stupidity or malice you decide.
      But the days just before the referendum the BBC told everyone "remain" would be winning and the brexiteers would never get a majority.
      That made the remainers lazy and they just didn't go to vote cause they were winning anyway.
      Pretty much the BBC singlehandedly caused Brexit.
      And don't get me started on the Scotland referendum, the months before the referendum you couldn't turn in the BBC without seeing a program about "our friends the Scots" and documentaries about that beautiful country Scotland.
      After the referendum... Not so much anymore, almost nothing even.

    • @epincion
      @epincion 18 днів тому

      @@dantownsend4246in fact Badenoch backed off and very few ‘EU regulations’ embedded into UK regulations have been removed. Why?
      Well once she actually took office as a minister she discovered that EU regulations are based on international regulations set sector by sector by expert technical bodies, indeed often these international regulations were set by expert bodies called and paid for by the EU because of the three ‘big gorillas’ of the world trade jungle , the EU, the USA and China - the EU and it’s ecosystem of 19 (soon to be 20) comprehensive FTA’s with other developed nations is the only one that is still committed to the GATT/WTO concept of global trade being a level playing field where all nations big and small follow the same rules and disputes are arbitrated by neutral referees.
      The US and China are retreating back to the big power mercantilism of the former imperial powers where trade with them is entirely on their own rules that suit them and disadvantage others.
      Hence common rules do exist and Badenoch found out that scrapping scores of ‘EU rules’ was in fact scrapping international rules - the very rules that the UK rolled over into the new bilateral trade deals it has with a number of nations.

    Great post, in fact as Minister for business and trade Kemi Badenoch backed off and very few ‘EU regulations’ embedded into UK regulations have been removed.

    • @ab-ym3bf
      @ab-ym3bf 18 днів тому +2

      True, but on the other hand, the UK sees no problem in violating international rules when they see fit. Maybe it was a leap too far for now..

    • @epincion
      @epincion 18 днів тому

      @@ab-ym3bf during the transition period when Truss was Minister in charge of making new trading deals the model that was adopted was to take the trade deal the EU already had with that nation (and the deal the UK had been using) and then roll it over as a template for a new bilateral deal between the UK and that nation.
      This involved rolling over the scores of sectoral agreements of mutual equivalence of standards (MEA’s) which get around all the myriads of non tariff barriers (NTB’s) in modern trade between developed economies.
      NTB’s are essentially sets of standards and they are much deeper than you think.
      For example in a Sanitary Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS) which is an MEA covering all the NTB’s in trade in food, fish, agriculture etc, there are not only standards about quality of the food but also about the certification systems and the qualifications of those employees of those certification bodies. So right down to things like standards for the training of the veterinary surgeons who inspect the produce.
      Hence MEA’s and NTB’s are complex and detailed and international in reach.
      So Liz Truss was happy to roll these over into the new bilateral UK free trade agreements (FTA’s) with nations like Japan.
      However it’s curious that the EU-UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement (TCA) has next to no MEA’s so in no way is it a comprehensive fit-for-purpose FTA.
      Why no MEA’s in the TCA?
      It’s here that the Brexiter’s EU derangement syndrome kicks in. As Michel Barnier noted in his now published diary, during the transition period he asked Lord Frost when the UKG would be sitting down and negotiating all the needed MEA’s and in particular an SPS deal (this was specifically promised as part of the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol (NIP) and Frost told him that the UKG had no intention of signing any MEA’s with the EU and that instead the EU must just accept the UK as a ‘sovereign equal’ and with no binding agreements!
      It’s the Brexiter ‘we can have our cake and eat it’ delusion.
      In the case of the NIP we also now know Johnson and Frost had told the DUP they would not implement the NIP which is why Johnson openly told the DUP they could bin any paperwork about a NI-GB customs border. Frost himself later wrote a self congratulatory article in the Telegraph saying that ‘we signed just to get Brexit done but had no intention of every honouring the NIP’. The EU and USA both warned that failure to honour the NIP would end trade and diplomatic relations not just between the UK and EU but between the US as well.
      Johnson dug his heels in and for over a year talks in all fronts froze and eventually Sunak realised the damage and negotiated the Windsor Framework which implements the NIP via bespoke MEA’s only applicable to NI.
      Rees-Mogg later said that the EU should just accept the UK as equal and that there should be no customs borders at all - in effect asking for all the privileges of the single market but not being in it.
      The disconnect is that the UKG did roll over and sign all the MEAs with other nations like Japan because they knew full well that no other nation would buy the nonsense that no legally binding agreements were needed.
      So right now absent the needed MEA’s in the TCA the EU has taken a pragmatic approach.
      UK rules still mirror EU rules since the UK only left the EU recently and because the UK bound itself to keeping international standards in its other new trade deals so the EU unilaterally accepts UK certification on imports from the UK for now but requires the paperwork be seen with every consignment arriving at a port of entry to the EU. This hugely adds cost and delay for UK exporters to the EU. If there was trust due to a signed MEA then the paperwork and inspections would be minimalised.
      Brexiter Badenoch soon learned that if she did scrap what she called ‘EU rules’ embedded in UK law then that would end trade with not just the EU but also with many other nations.

    • @ab-ym3bf
      @ab-ym3bf 18 днів тому +2

      @@epincion the roll-over deals the UK got are, afaik, only temporary deals so that the UK would get some time to get it's ducks in a row.
      Hence why the other partners accepted all the existing MEA etc stipulations in the copy-pasted deals.
      Once those deadlines pass, and proper negotiations will start to replace those roll-over deals the UK will be confronted with the lacking rules, standards, institutions and other requirements to function as a stand alone WTO member.I'm not sure the UK has even filed all the necessary tables with WTO yet.
      For sure the 2025 review of the TCA will be where the EU once again will have top open the eyes of the UK, since so far they still do not comply. Setting the TCA on shaker grounds unless Starmer has shown to be making some progress in that direction.

    • @epincion
      @epincion 18 днів тому

      @@ab-ym3bf I agree and the big stumbling block for the Tory UKG has been its ideological exceptionalism (a hangover of the attitude from days of Empire and it’s Imperial Preferences), when the reality is that the UK now a middling size power with a declining economy is going to have to accept dynamic equivalence whereby it has to automatically update changes in EU/EEC rules in order to trade in goods as efficiently as is possible as a third party with the EU and it’s wider system ecosystem of FTA’s.
      The incoming Labour Government might be more willing to grasp the nettle although they also are fundamentally an English and Nationalist party just like the Tories (and by Nationalism I don’t mean racial but the ‘we are exceptional’ attitude).

    Everything on TV has an allotted time slot. Of necessity whatever goes on in whatever programme it is must fit in to that time slot. Discussions nearly always take longer than the time slot allowed and this means that cuts must take place. It goes without saying that everyone who speaks thinks that everything they say is wise and precious and should not under any circumstances be cut.
