    This video was my introduction to your channel. I have no need for that lens or intention to buy it, but this was exactly what I want to see in a lens review: the tactile experience of using it, the actual scale and feel of it, and the how all the little details actually work. Great job.

    This is the best review I've seen about how this lens would help me with the type of photography I enjoy. I like nature. I don't want to have to lug monster equipment along. I have really enjoyed my Olympus equipment because it allows me to pursue my passion without needing two people or staying close to my truck. BTW, I have seen reviews from several other Olympus pros. Each point out different features and uses.

    I have to make a confession: I first tested the lens and then browsed around for reviews. Yours is by far the most accurate according to my thoughts after renting the lens yesterday (2021-10-20). I’ve tested the premium lens as well, and although I’d leave Lamborghini out of it, it is as simple as that. The FF users need to get their hands on this lens to see what this (MFT-M43) system offers. Then we can talk about prices. I will probably not buy either lens, because for my needs, they are not a justified expense to my photography. However, my message to the ones that already own the 40-150 f2,8 pro, I say “think of the 150-400 f4,5 Pro as a 40-150 f2,8 Pro on steroids” because this is how I would describe it.

    Great review Rob. First one to properly explain the audio switch, and bring up the short throw on the zoom ring, that is very nice! The thought of replacing the 100-400 and the 300 with one lens is very enticing, now off to play the lottery!

    I am really impress by this new lense and the way you speak about it, you are the only one, and I saw lots of video on it, to speak about how practical this lense is. I am a wildlife photographer but far to be pro according to me, this lense seems to be absolutely perfect but the price for me is too expensive even if I could buy it . I choose the new 100-400 mm lense and I hope I will enjoy using it . Thanks again for your video and shoot well.

      I want both.
      I can't afford either.
      If I won the lottery...
      I'd actually buy the 100-400 to go with my EM5MII (although first of all would probably get the updated Mark III with a couple of other lenses I want more than either of these lenses).
      If I won enough to get the 150-400 I'd probably also have enough to buy the EM1X to go with it, which I feel you also need to get for balance 😂

      But if you take it just take the money to by a very good but heavily overpriced lens.

    • @ptfap
      @ptfap 3 роки тому

      @@peterebel7899 Sorry, you do not get the point - this is not a prime lens, it is a zoom, pretty versatile especially when photographing wildlife - and that is what this lens was specifically designed for.
      If you compare it to FF lenses that cover some of the reach of this lens then we are talking about roughly 2x the price and at least 2x the size and weight. Granted these are FF lenses BUT this is especially the beauty of m43 as it allows much smaller glass. And this lens shows in a very effective way what really is possible in m43.
      I am shooting Nikon Z FF and Olympus m43. I only stopped investing in m43 as we all know the trouble of Olympus selling its camera division and at least I am not sure about how future Olympus m43 cameras will look like and how JIP (the new owner of Olympus camera) will proceed in the future.
      Other than that I would not hesitate investing in that lens in a heartbeat instead of going the FF route with any other brand.

    Hi Rob, this was the best review of this lens I have seen to date - leave the specs to read on the web and focus on the experiences when shooting. At the price, I won’t be buying one any time soon, but would love it. Your explanation of the short zoom rotation and the practicalities of zooming using this and the tc switch whilst swinging the camera into position really makes me want it even more - the number of times I used to miss with the zooming on my old system and also changing to a TC on my 300!. The focus preset plus the ability to have a lens function button at the flick of a switch - this lens is so intelligently designed. You have a new subscriber of the strength of this video. I love my Olympus gear so will be checking out your channel with interest. I will also be looking for the sample images on your website, ASAP!

    Much to like about this lens as well as a stellar A F sys from the Olympus camera combined with it. I, like you, am not a fan of often changing lenses but prefer having one lens that covers a lot of range. I chose the Olympus 12-200m to go on my G9 for this reason. It covers a significant area & takes good images. This 150-400m also covers lots of ground & according to you takes stellar photos. I have an original Honda CT 110 trail with a 1000 miles - worth @ $4 or $5 thousand - I plan on converting to future camera gear purchases. Thanks for the quality review.

Being a foreigner, further to the very well explained technical details and user perceptions, I appreciated the "middle English" pronunciation, which gave me the chance to listen carefully without trudging by reading the subtitles. A couple of things… the Olympus 150-400 is NOT small or lightweight, nor is it cheap. I have a hard time recommending a $7,400 lens for a cropped-sensor camera. With 20mp there is very little room for cropping.
      I switched to a Sony a7rIV 2 years ago. The body is basically the same size as a pro OM-D body, and with 61mp I can crop if I need to virtually extend the reach at the telephoto end. The Sigma 150-600mm sport lens is smaller than the Oly, effectively the same aperture, and only $1500.
      The Olympus 300mm f4 pro lens is great, even with the 2x teleconverter. For the price I would still recommend something with a full-frame sensor.
      I used micro 4/3 cameras for 10 years, and found the ragged edge of the performance. Once I tried the Sony a couple of years ago I couldn’t make a case for the smaller sensor.

I want to keep the 40-150 primarily because it's versatile for snakes and the herons I shoot. However, I want a little more reach for ospreys and occasional bald eagles in my area. FYI I am a current Canon EOS R5 shooter with their 500/4 lens..

      Thanks Steven, the 150-400 IQ is more like the 300pro than the 100-400. It has that crisp detail with soft bokeh like the other Olympus pro lenses.

    Sony Northtrup put up a video claiming that an A7R IV in crop mode (26 megapixel) paired with the FE 200-600mm will give better results all while being considerably cheaper and a bit lighter. Thoughts?

    • @RobKnight

      I haven’t used the Sony setup you mentioned, but on spec the smaller size is probably due to the slower aperture, plus that lens is .5lbs heavier than the Olympus. The Sony also has a minimum focus distance of 2.4m vs 1.3m on the Olympus. That has a big impact on the usability of the lens in terms of working up close. Has Tony used the Olympus 150-400? My guess is that he hasn’t.

  • @heymikeriley

    How does the aperture compare to FF? I understand the micro 4/3 crop factor, but what is a good approximation for FF aperture equivalent on this thing? Looks like a dream lens

    • @RobKnight
      @RobKnight  3 роки тому

      “Equivalent aperture” generally refers to depth of field. You get a bit more DOF with micro4/3 lenses than you would with full frame lenses at the same aperture. When it comes to telephoto lenses and wildlife, this is a plus.

    There are no doubts that's a great lens, Olympus knows how to build incredible lenses. The only problem is the camera AF that's still one or two steps behind others.

      In your experience, where is the AF lacking?

    • @davdenic
      @davdenic 3 роки тому

      The keeper rate is pretty lower compared to others, now I'm thinking to upgrade my EM1mk2 to mk3 or em1x but at the same time I have some doubts.
      Many times the AF is not able to recognise the subject or it focuses the background instead of the subject which is clearly in foreground.
      It's a pity because we can have very long Tele but the AF makes me loose many shots. I'm quite expert and tried different settings but in the end I just know I will miss shots.
      I shot with EM1mk2 300/4 mc14 or mc20.

Saturday I was shooting at some Red kites (Milvus milvus) when they were mobbing another bird of prey (Buteo buteo), suddenly a couple of ravens started mobbing all them. Thanks for the comprehensive review. I am about to skip over to your web site to have a look at the images you have taken with it. I am very keen on checking this lens out when it becomes available in Australia. The price is way above what I thought and hoped it would be. I am currently using the Panasonic 100-400 on the Mark lll. At times I can get really nice images but I am often very disappointed when subjects are distant and, in particular, doing birds in flight. I know that this lens isn't even anywhere near in the same ballpark but to consider such a big outlay (AU$12000 in Australia) it would have to outperform by current system immensely. I would love to know if you did manage to take images with the Mark lll and if the quality was on a par with the M1X. I am disappointed that the bird eye detect firmware upgrade is only for the M1X. I hope it filters down to the Mark lll. Do you know if there is any thought on that happening? If I do go mad with such a huge outlay I don't want to be adding the M1X to the shopping list as well. I already have 2 Mark ll cameras as well as the Mark lll. I have been waiting 2 years for this lens to be released and I want to see if it lives up to the expected hype and that it will be a gamechanger for wildlife and action photography.

      Thanks for the comment, Carol. The 150-400mm’s performance on the mkIII is basically the same as it is on the 1X. I don’t know about future firmware for the mkIII. The 1X has dual processors, and I don’t know if that facilitates the bird detection. I’ve seen some pretty nice discounts on the 1X lately. Maybe you could fly to the US and pick up the new lens and a new camera. Sounds like it would be cheaper than buying the lens in Australia!

Sadly nowhere is but I live in hope that it is allowed in the near future. But the way things are in your beautiful country I won't be able to leave Australia. I was booked for Alaska May 2020 and deferred to May 2021 but that is in doubt too. My dream would be able to get there and to have this awesome lens with me. The lens would be a bit cheaper in the US but I would have to pay huge import duty when I return to OZ. The 1X has dropped in price so maybe if the bird detect is as brilliant as they say and it isn't available on the mklll it may be worth selling one of the mkll's and getting an M1X. But who knows what the future may bring. Hopefully an update of the firmware to give me bird detect in the camera I have or the lens is so great I can manage without it.

    What's your opinion on this?

    • @RobKnight
      @RobKnight  3 роки тому

      There is a big difference between selling a business and closing a business. The Olympus imaging business has been sold to a company who has specifically said they intend to continue the imaging business. The only people who have said Olympus is “getting out of the camera business” are those who haven’t actually read the press releases or statements in full. Even the BBC reported that after the first press release about the sale which didn’t say anything of the sort.

    • @quazisanjeed6395
      @quazisanjeed6395 3 роки тому

      @@RobKnight, Let me quote from the BBC news release of 24 June 2020:
      "Olympus, once one of the world's biggest camera brands, is selling off that part of its business after 84 years.
      The firm said that despite its best efforts, the "extremely severe digital camera market" was no longer profitable.
      The arrival of smartphones, which had shrunk the market for separate cameras, was one major factor, it said.
      It had recorded losses for the last three years....
      Olympus is now seeking to strike a deal to carve off the camera part of its business so that its brands - such as Zuiko lenses - can be used in new products by another firm, Japan Industrial Partners.
      In a statement, the Japanese company said that it was business as usual until then."
      Now, the bottomline is; Olympus Corporation doesn't own the camera division any longer. Therefore, lot of thought is required before investing 7.5k dollars for a glass of this caliber. Example: recently I bought the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM (6.2k dollars) with little thought. The moment fund was available, I made the purchase together with a 2x TC of same brand. Because I'm convinced I'll get the lens and camera support from Canon for many years to come. Wondering whether same can be assmued for Olympus!

    • @RobKnight
      @RobKnight  3 роки тому +1

      It’s funny that you quote that BBC article. I remember being surprised when I read that because it showed such lazy “journalism”. At that point Olympus had released ONE press release that stated their intent to sell the imaging division to JIP. That’s it. That entire article was written out of complete conjecture based on a one-page press release that didn’t say anything about “getting out of the business”.
      Since June there has been a lot of communication from Olympus and JIP about their intent moving forward. All of that information is considerably more important than an assumption made by the BBC (and many others, I might add) several months ago.
      Based on everything Olympus and JIP have said, publicly and internally, I am confident about the future of the new OM-D company. As a sponsored ambassador for the company, I’m staking part of my livelihood on all of this. And I don’t do that lightly. No one in the company has told me anything about closing or exiting the camera business.

    • @quazisanjeed6395
      @quazisanjeed6395 3 роки тому

      @@RobKnight, well, in case Olympus was confident about the future of their imaging equipment business, this issue wouldn't have popped up in the first place. They definitely are not as optimistic about it as they were in the past. It is no secret that they account for a small segment of the camera market. So, there is a niche but now, that chunk also seems questionable. The entire camera market has shrunk substantially due to the emergence of smart phones. The statistics speak about that reality clearly. That's why they are selling to or teaming up with JIP.
      Foot note: When I stepped into digital photography in 2008, started out with an Olympus Point & Shoot pocket camera model FE 340. Undoubtedly, it introduced me to the wonderful world of digital photography. But sadly, it didn't impress me with the quality of its output. That was achieved by a Canon P&S camera bought same year and allured me into their world till now.

    • @RobKnight

      The idea now is that the camera company will be more nimble without being a small part of a larger company. Which makes a ton of sense if you’ve ever worked with a large corporation like this.
      Don’t let your point and shoot experience from 2008 decide your opinion about micro 4/3 in 2020. 😉

      Not if you compare it to similar quality lenses with constant aperture and built-in teleconverter 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Although I would have loved to have more than three days behind the lens so I could shoot some different subjects, I am very pleased with the optical performance overall.

    It is an overpriced f/9 lens. With teleconverter even f/11. What a hell. Not just overpriced, also your subject separation is gone. Nice try from Olympus to see the table silver before going out of business finally.

    I have to laugh at the "pro" designation. I can't see a Pro using micro 4/3rds. The label is just to attract the neck ornament brigade!

      As a professional photographer who uses m4/3 (as do many of my colleagues) I think your comment is pretty ironic 😆
