  • Victron Solar Charge Controller Features Explained
    We have now had the Solar Charge controller installed for a few months are really liking it. In this video we walk you through the features of the Victron Solar Charge controller and the Victron Battery monitor. You can connect to the charge controller using Bluetooth on a mobile phone which allows you access all the features and date that you require.
    The charge controller is connected in to our 2 AGM leisure batteries that we are using to power all the 12v appliances in our van along with the 240v appliances via our inverter.
    If there is anything that you would like us to cover in one of these videos then send us a comment and we will produce a video for you. We will be continuing to document the build process of this Mercedes Sprinter Campervan Conversion and will bring you along the way with us.

    082920/1431pst. Thanks again, I’m watching your visual user instructions for the second time. The more I go through, the most I am able to understand the functions of VICTRON MPPT Charge Controller. I have VICTRON 100/30 with Bluetooth and am quite satisfied at the intelligent device. Presently am using INTERSTATE (US spec) 12V flooded single Battery, for Garage lighting (LED) purposes. I’d replace INTERSTATE with LiFePo4, in due course time. Thanks to you for your descriptive description, which is better than going through scant info by the manufacturer. Stay safe, bless you and 73s...

    Could the BMV be used as a BatteryProtect device, I mean to shut down all current from battery if voltage fall to some value?

  • @blessedwithchallenges9917
    @blessedwithchallenges9917 3 роки тому +1

    Since the Victron MPPT has auto shut offs at high and low voltage, if you add a $40 Victron Smart temperature sensor, it will work in tandem with the MPPT so you can program a high/ low temperature cut off, which is vital for lithium batteries. Then you don't need a BMS, since the two are taking care of what a BMS does. Now the expense of Victron is the same as buying a cheaper MPPT and a BMS. Most people don't seem to realize this amazing feature about Victron for lithium...

I don't have a clue what the max charge current rate is tolerable for these batteries. I'm wondering would the Victron dump a full 50 or 100 amps in bulk mode & if it's safe or does it have some sort of sensor to throttle it to the best charge rate for the battery capacity?

    I have a bluesolar charger with bluetooth dongle right now. If i want to add a battery monitor using the victronconnect app, I still need ANOTHER bluetooth dongle for a BMV700/702 right? If I did not want to spend the full $200 for a BMV712 that is. I have doubts about the in-built Bluetooth due to distance connectivity. Any advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.

    • @christee2908
      @christee2908 5 років тому

      You need a dongle for the BMV702. There is no possible connection for a dongle on the 700. Distance connectivity depends indeed on where you install the the BMV, you have a bit more freedom thru the lenght of the dongle cable, and in some locations this could be of help.

    Ello mate super helpful video!! I fitted my victron mppt 100/20 today and was surprised at the current coming in from the solar being so low around 0.5a. Am I right in saying that this is because it was in float mode? So when the batteries are nicely topped up it doesn’t draw in as much from the solar?

    • @SunscreenDreams
      @SunscreenDreams  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Joe, thanks for your lovely comment. Yes this may be because the batteries are fully charged and therefore don’t require any draw from the solar. To test it out put some load on to the batteries, i.e fridge, lights etc and see if the current increases. We will be putting a new video out in the new few days so keep an eye out for that!

      Andy , hello permit me to respond to your query. There’s no user serviceable component in any VICTRON MPPT Charge Controllers. But there are 2 options built in to charge Batteries of 12/24 configurations. I’d recommend that you assemble LiFePo4 cells to that specification. LiFePo4s are preferred over flooded Pb Batteries. 73s...

    What does the Absorption bit mean? I’ve seen bulk and float but not heard absorption and what that actually means?

    • @misslovell
      @misslovell 2 роки тому

      He answered it in a comment above, "Absorption mode happens after bulk charge. When the battery voltage reaches the preset absorption voltage it switches from bulk to absorption. At this point it switches to. a constant voltage charge suitable for the battery type. It will the hold this until either the preset absorption time is reached or the current being drawn at the batteries drops to the preset level. Once this happens the battery is fully charged and the controller switches to float mode."

      Another question I have is this
      I live in rural Australia no mains electricity so I run everything off of Solar friends in Adelaide have pulled an old system of their roof and have given it to me . The panels are 250 watt and 39 volts so I hooked up two sets of three in series then parallel the two sets of three
      I purchased a victron 150/75 and have 12 @ 100 amphr batteries
      They have 6 more panels I could have if I hooked up another two sets of three and paralled it could the victron handle the extra input or would it simply not fully utilise the amps going in
      I just don’t want to damage the unit

  • @fitshapebootcamp210

    Great video guys! Just one question, if I install my panels on the roof and connect them up in series, would it damage the panels if I leave them connected together but not to a charge controller? I'll need to finish other aspects of the build before connecting up the charge controller.

    • @SunscreenDreams
      @SunscreenDreams  5 років тому +3

      Thank you, I am glad you found it useful. Having the panels disconnected will be fine, over an extended period of time if can’t damage some cadmium panels but you will be fine. Disconnected panels do get hotter than connected panels so would make sure that there is good airflow around them.

      Hmmmmmmm. That’s a worthy intelligent enquiry and or suggestion. The newer versions of VICTRON MPPT Charge Controllers have built in Bluetooth transceiver. But their range is not more than 20 feet, there about. Perhaps VICTRON guys could look into getting the device to communicate in WAN system. That would be a great blessing when traveling (vacation/ visits) to keep an eye on Charge System back at home. Thanks to Dhanajayan and Leo. 73s...

    • @frodev728

      you would connect your “lights” to the load output terminals, and the controller switches the load output on and off. alternatively you can use a relay or other electronic voltage sensing circuit to sense when the load terminals are switched and switch anything based on that...

      @@frodev728 That's ridiculous, who is going to use an expensive charge controller to turn lights on and off? @@stevec5000 It depends on the use. Remember that originally Victron as a firm is pointed to boat users, so this streetlight function could be handy if your boat moored somewhere in a bay and you want to make others aware of your location at night. Then this feature comes in very handy to indicate your position when lying at anchor. If you are at anchor, you must switch on your anchor light between sunset and sunrise. That way other ships can easily avoid you. This streetlight function makes this possible automatically.
      Using this function in an MH or campervan I see no clear advantage. But an example would be: use it with a inverted relay connected to it, who can then also arrange certain functions and close these functions during the nighttime. Charging phone , computer, ...loading devices when there is solar energy available, and during the night they are switched off.
      There are quite a few things that you can do with this function, be inspired.

    The controller will work out the sunrise/sunset times over the course of several days. This is done through the voltage received from the solar panels and will be cleared, when disconnected from the battery (unlike all the other settings).
