  • Boom made aviation history on the morning of January 28, 2025, with the first supersonic flight of our demonstrator aircraft, XB-1. After taking off from the Mojave Air & Space Port in California, XB-1 safely and successfully reached an altitude of 35,290 ft. before accelerating to Mach 1.122 (652 KTAS or 750 mph)-and breaking the sound barrier.
    With over 1,000 years of combined aerospace experience, the XB-1 team has devoted nearly two years to ground and flight testing. Each team member is driven by a deep passion for aviation and a singular mission: to make commercial supersonic flight a reality.
    During XB-1’s first supersonic flight, Chief Test Pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg broke the sound barrier not just once, but three times.
    Here’s a closer look at each of XB-1’s test flights, documenting its progression up to the sound barrier and beyond: boomsupersonic...

    Such a privilege to have seen this event live. I saw Neil step on the moon, I saw Apollo - Soyuz, First flight of the Space Shuttle, First successful landing of an orbital booster both the Falcon and Super Heavy. Now I've had the privilege of seeing a new era in super sonic flight. Congratulations Boom!

    I was born in the late 90s in the UK and seeing Concorde in museums always makes me very proud but sad at the same time. Seems like commercial aviation has really regressed over the last two decades (in terms of bold innovation). You look up at the sky and most of the planes look the same.

    Let's get a grip: the achievement is that a private company took a plane supersonic with smaller booms. However, i'd have been interested in the decibel level of the "booms". Otherwise, this is just revisiting what happened 70+ years ago by Chuck Yeager and by the Concorde in the early 70s.

      Crazy how you're loud and wrong. This company has no intent of making a quiet sonic boom. This is why all of the routes for the Overture are planned to be transoceanic. The company who is doing this is NASA, who actually just did an engine test of their Quesst, which is their demonstrator. Ironically, one of the ways of achieving a quieter boom is by making a tiny cabin... which is the opposite of optimal for a passenger aircraft. Seems you haven't done anything with that interest of yours, lol.

    • @Infigo96
      @Infigo96 12 годин тому +1

      This plane is not about smaller booms. It is about going through the process of developing a supersonic airliner. A process much more involved than in the concord days where they made it fly and that was good enough (but a feat of engineering then).
      And making it make sense economically.
      Why this? Because you start somewhere, when this is through its trial it is time for the overture to slowly start getting tested.

  • @mapgeek6
    @mapgeek6 9 годин тому +2

    I'm getting a kick out of the fact that the XB-1 uses the same engines as the T38 chase aircraft used in the test. I know there are a lot of armchair engineers in these comments saying "what's the big deal" or "don't they know this was done in the 1940's?" or "military planes break the speed of sound all the time" but you're completely missing the point. It made no noticeable boom on the ground when it went supersonic, unlike military aircraft or the Concorde, which can break windows in houses. Also, it's a privately developed aircraft. No privately developed aircraft has ever gone supersonic. This will be developed into a commercial airliner to carry people without breaking regulations about loud sonic booms. They call it "Boomless Cruise." In order to accomplish that, well, they need to go supersonic first, which they did. It's a proof that their aerodynamics worked, that their construction techniques worked, that it's indeed much quieter, and it's a mighty fine achievement.

    • @Nuurix
      @Nuurix Годину тому +1

      I see that point, but they still havent build a commercial passanger jet prototype yet (thats still a huuge step to go) + they still havent addressed how all of this, even in an ideal world where the perfect jet exists, will be profitable? Regulations will still apply even without sonic booms, which include maintenance and operating costs. Maintaining a jet engine costs so much more and we are not even talking about operating costs for fuel and personell.. Pilots would have to have specific type ratings on this specific aircraft model, which drives personell costs up unless they manage to operate these planes at huge scale, which I dont see. The only way this idea of supersonic commercial travel can work is if a) there are so many jets in operation to drive operating costs down and b) the market actually is willing to pay for higher ticket prices, because you can travel faster. Both premisses have been utterly debunked by the whole concorde thing and even if concorde could have flown without a sonic boom, they still wouldnt have overcame those economic issues. Still cudos to the engineers building this atleast they are having fun. Its the investors that are literally burning their money with this nonesense, but I dont really care whoever invests in this I guess its their money to lose.

      The Boom XB-1 is considered special because it is the first privately developed aircraft to successfully break the sound barrier, marking a significant milestone in the potential return of commercial supersonic flight, acting as a technology demonstrator for the larger passenger airliner, the Boom Overture, which aims to offer fast, efficient supersonic travel for civilians; essentially paving the way for a new era of supersonic air travel.
      Key points about the XB-1:
      Supersonic achievement:
      It was the first privately funded aircraft to achieve supersonic speeds during a test flight, exceeding Mach 1.
      Technology validation:
      The XB-1 is designed to test and validate key technologies that will be incorporated into the larger Overture airliner, including advanced aerodynamics, carbon fiber composites, and efficient supersonic engine designs.
      Civilian focus:
      Unlike previous supersonic aircraft like Concorde, the XB-1 is specifically designed for civilian passenger transport, aiming to make supersonic travel more accessible.
      Development by Boom Supersonic:
      This experimental aircraft is developed by Boom Supersonic, a company dedicated to bringing back commercial supersonic flight.

      @AntiVaganza 9 годин тому

      @@CONVAIR_106 Not entirely true:
      From their FAQ:
      How much faster will boomless flights be?
      When in Boomless Cruise, speeds are 40-50% faster than conventional airliners. This means a flight from New York to Los Angeles can be up to 90 minutes shorter. Hybrid routes with overland and overwater segments, such as Chicago to Frankfurt, will also see incremental time savings.
      Overture’s advanced autopilot will continuously optimize speed for Boomless Cruise based on real-time atmospheric conditions. Boomless Cruise is possible at speeds up to Mach 1.3, with typical speed between Mach 1.1 and 1.2.
      How does Boomless Cruise work?
      Boomless Cruise leverages well-known Mach cutoff physics, where a sonic boom refracts upward due to temperature and wind gradients affecting the local speed of sound. This is similar to how light bends when passing through a glass of water. By flying at a sufficiently high altitude at an appropriate speed for current atmospheric conditions, Overture ensures that its sonic boom never reaches the ground.
      They do go on and admit regulations have to chance for this to happen;)

      Concorde was developed initially for military use by the military utilizing public funds. This is the first privately funded aircraft being developed specifically for commercial civilian use. The XB1 is their precursor and test-bed for the "Overture" which is aimed at being the passenger craft which will reintroduce commercial supersonic passenger air travel ... hopefully. That explains many of the design choices of the XB1 ... such as the tri-jet configuration for purposes of redundancy as will be required for commercial passenger air travel.

Concorde was always going to be a civilian aircraft. More was learnt about stress and it’s affect on airframes during Concorde development than any previous and subsequent R&D. I have no doubt, this information was shared with the UK aircraft industry. Those stresses I mention cause air frames to be scrapped as they are time expired due to stretch and shrink cycles exceeding manufacturers specs.

      The US, tried and failed to emulate Concorde in the 60’s and 70’s but were hamstrung by JFK’s specification that it had to be faster, bigger and fly further than Concorde. Concorde is limited to Mach 2 due to physical constraints that would end and aircraft’s life early. This is why JFK’s specs were just too much for a run of the mill plane.

      @ You're welcome. This aircraft is meant to be a testbed for Boom's Overture, which is a planned supersonic airliner. Essentially it will be a spiritual successor to Concorde with modern technology, though with slightly fewer passengers and would travel at Mach 1.7 instead of Mach 2 for better efficiency.
