This design relies only on the clearance between the rotor and housing so a slightly thicker walled tube would cause binding, and slightly thinner would cause leakage.
Pretty cool video I work with these pumps a lot. Just one note, real peristaltic pumps have a way to remove and dispose of the entire tubing without having to take the whole pump apart. Otherwise, it kind of defeats the purpose of this type of pump, which is to avoid contamination.

They're good for moving or metering precision amounts of liquid in a sterile environment or in a situation where one would want to dispose of the entire tubing circuit after use or periodically. They're self-priming, a simple design, and can move pretty viscous things like syrups. They can be easily serviced in the field by untrained personnel and may even be designed as such. It's another design to keep in the mental toolbox of 'using the right tool for the job'.

I spent almost 2 semesters in college, trying to make one on CNC machines for a part of a larger class project. (I needed something to pump small bits of oil into bearings) I really didn’t do anything different from what you did. Everything was machined to a couple thousands tolerance. Used a low speed high torque motor like you did. I could get them to half work, but not reliably. I also 3D printed many different styles of different pieces before machining anything. Eventually I got one to work, made about 20 of them and not a single one of them worked. I’m thankful covid caused campus to shut down back in 2020 cause I would have pulled out all my remaining hair trying to get them to work.
I really like how you marked the radius at which the roller axles needed to be drilled while the part was on the lathe - a clever trick I don't think I've seen before!
Very nice build. Those type pumps can be used for corrosive fluids as well as toxic fluids without any danger of contamination or damaging the pump parts. Good pump for making a continuous flow Ferric Chloride spray circuit board etcher setup.
Instead of the brass rollers, you could have used plastic (nylon or pp) rollers with a thin groove to keep the pipe in place. There will be a tendency to drag the silicone pipe while pumping
Fine job :-) I would replace the brass rolls with real ball bearings - less work, more comfort, besser surface and probably a longer lifetime of the hose ;-)

Jedyny minus tych pomp to szybkie zużywanie się wężyka. Pracowałem na utrzymaniu ruchu w pralni chemicznej i podawanie wszystkich detergentów było zrobione na tych pompkach (8 na pralkę). Średnio raz w miesiącu trzeba było wymieniać większość wężyków.
I remember my dad and I had a pump like that for pumping fuel into our RC planes. Every other guy at the field had the expensive electric pumps but ours was so much faster I never saw the point of upgrading.
Wow, that was cool. Perhaps you (or someone) can clear something up for me - why 3 rotating wheels on the tube, why not 2 or 4? 3 feels right, but I can't put my finger on why.

2:57 To be pedantic: you are connecting the motor via a belt drive, which consists of a belt running over two pulleys. Gears specifically engage directly with another gear, and reverse rotation, unlike pulleys, which need a belt but don't reverse the direction of rotation. Interesting video otherwise, didn't realize you could build a pump lathe-only that easily
Now I KNOW I did not just see you cut those zip ties with the good fabric shears did I!????!!!! 21 years of marriage I if there is anything I have learned, I do not touchthe fabric shears. Also, 40+ years of using zip ties, use a flush cutter to cut them flush with the catch. Those sharp cut ends will slice you open just as fast as a straight razor. I have reached my hand into a server rack before and pulled it back out with blood dripping, darned previous tech used zip ties and cut them with scissors at an angle... I spent more time cutting those zip ties out and replacing them with velcro and twist than I did replacing the power supply on the server that was throwing an error.
Eco-Lab uses peristaltic pumps to dispense liquid soap at millions of restaurants. I don’t know if they sell these pumps used, but they probably have ten thousand old ones, sitting in a warehouse. The problem with peristaltic pumps is that the fluid line gets squished, over and over; so it occasionally needs to be replaced. For that reason, peristaltic pumps are not such a great solution. But they’re cheap and accurate. Peristaltic pumps are only good if you’re dispensing an expensive fluid. The same thing could be accomplished by placing the fluid-line (with a one-way check valve inside) onto an electric solenoid. When the solenoid actuates with great speed, a certain amount of liquid will pass through the check valve. At the end of travel, a spring-loaded valve-gate would swing closed, just as the solenoid returns to its original position. So you could say that the fluid is stationary, it’s the pump that’s moving. Like a peristaltic pump, this system could be used to dispense small volumes of liquid with accuracy. It wouldn’t be infinitely variable, but companies like Eco-Lab aren’t looking for that kind of infinite adjustment anyway. Possibly increments of 10 cc. Actually, you could have eight of these kinetic check valves operating in unison to make a pump which is not centrifugal, and not positive displacement, either. It’s a bastard red-headed stepchild pump.

Nice work. This a one fierce peristaltic pump. We would recommend stepper motor instead of the dc brushed motor and the belt but we are biased.

Simple hand crank versions of this type of pump are used for RC model methanol fuel to prevent moisture contamination.
