Thank you. As a homeless artist who's spent my whole life feeling like I'm just getting started, this spurs me to be something, and I swear, the past three days since I first listened to this have been unlike any other in my artist's journey. I know you're a part of that: I've also got a lot of crazy shit going on, like my first concert I'll have ever done by myself that's coming up soon, but you've inspired me with this song. I find it and everything it makes me imagine about you to be worth a rent-free eternity in my mind. Thank you. Thank you.
My mistake, I meant "post-singer-songwriter era", not just "post-songwriter era". I think it has to do with the fact that you can clearly see a deep mastery of the classic language of this genre, but a remarkable parallel intuition and energy capable of subverting and updating it. From the ridiculously unrigid but impactful and memorable melodic lines (it's not uncommon for there not to be a melody - or rather, it could be another one, as you can see at the beginning of this video; the melody he sings isn't the same as the one on the record, it's an analog track - and the touchstone of “pop” songs is usually the golden discovery of a melody - that's not quite how it works here), the title of the song being something extremely unusual, without a word, the combination of esoteric/abstract language with slang and more urban and contemporary language (using “fuck these people” as one of the first lines is great - you're like, what the fuck). I also found the combination of super “classic” instrumentation with modern production tricks interesting (cuts and seams, the use of only one piece of drums, a sampled hi-hat/the drum machine during an entire song (Try As I May)), with abrupt cuts clearly made on a computer. At the end of the day, like all “post-anything”, it's the use of a pre-existing language in a very new context, although not entirely (that would be pure avant-gardism). Another thing I thought was great was that he released this song first on his website; you had to download it, just like the lyrics, you downloaded an editable Word file with the lyrics, which creates a feeling of closeness with the text and the author that is very new and comical. And the covers of the singles and the album, all these details lead me to this idea of him renewing not only the process but the object itself (the songs) in a very creative way. Finally, another thing I've been thinking is, why the fuck was this the only single from the album, when the first three songs are clearly more direct and ear-catching? Interesting!
@@jmrm2227 amazing response! I hope my initial comment did not sound snippy. I was only quite curious! In a lot of his songs I see an attempt at a kind of objective correlative-> but through beat sensibility (stream of consciousness-> wild mobile thread) inparticualr Nina + A field of cops is like Van Morrison fucked kerouac over an open, humming nerve. I love the stuff! Never heard anything like it. Then again, I'm not very knowledgable about music. I would love to know if you have any (new) music recommendations. You seem to have a good ear.

@magiccowbell9023 in all my time being homeless, you're the first person to ever tell me that. Much appreciated. ♥️
Man as a fellow musician we all need to support each other more. Good luck out there 👍
You're the beginning of a post-songwriter era
I'm not kidding this time
@@jmrm2227 genuinely, what does post-songwriter mean?
