While it is true that Lewandowski has been the best club player for the 20/21 season, his performance at the national level leaves a lot to be desired. I was raging pretty hard when Poland lost against Slokavia in the euros, which goes to show terrible that national team is. Meanwhile, Messi lead his country to their first international trophy in 25 years, while being Copa America's best player (most goals, most assists etc). This is a huge accomplishment.
So if we consider performance at the international level (which the voters clearly do eg. Modric), then the argument for Messi becomes a lot stronger. This year it is definitely a toss-up between the two. It could have gone either way depending on how weight the voters placed on international tournaments.

Lewandowski should have got 2020 (idk why they didn't do it) but he didn't really do so much than most bundesliga goals in a single season. I know it's AMAZING, but considering he playerd in a RELATIVELY easier league than la liga, ended up the same in ucl, didn't do much in international games, messi deserves it. I know there are a lot of lewandowski fans out there and i guess i am kinda sorry for them for their idol not winning ballondor but if you look at FACTS, messi did deserve it, actually.
