While it is true that Lewandowski has been the best club player for the 20/21 season, his performance at the national level leaves a lot to be desired. I was raging pretty hard when Poland lost against Slokavia in the euros, which goes to show terrible that national team is. Meanwhile, Messi lead his country to their first international trophy in 25 years, while being Copa America's best player (most goals, most assists etc). This is a huge accomplishment. So if we consider performance at the international level (which the voters clearly do eg. Modric), then the argument for Messi becomes a lot stronger. This year it is definitely a toss-up between the two. It could have gone either way depending on how weight the voters placed on international tournaments.

While it is true that Lewandowski has been the best club player for the 20/21 season, his performance at the national level leaves a lot to be desired. I was raging pretty hard when Poland lost against Slokavia in the euros, which goes to show terrible that national team is. Meanwhile, Messi lead his country to their first international trophy in 25 years, while being Copa America's best player (most goals, most assists etc). This is a huge accomplishment.
So if we consider performance at the international level (which the voters clearly do eg. Modric), then the argument for Messi becomes a lot stronger. This year it is definitely a toss-up between the two. It could have gone either way depending on how weight the voters placed on international tournaments.
