What if Regulus Black is an animagi, and his animal form is Crookshanks. There is a lot of evidence he appears in the third book. It is said that he communicates with Sirius but It is never stated that the human pretending to be an animal can talk to an animal. The relationship that regulus has with Scabbers' could be thought of as a normal can and rat, but maybe he can tell it's his brothers old friend. Regulus may have gone into hiding and faked his own death to escape Voldemort's control. It is also said that their are deep scratch marks underneath Regulus's name plate on his door, that's kind of a weird detail to add. Also Crookshanks jumps on Sirius's chest just as Harry is going to kill him. Just a theory.
