This scene scared me as a kid. I had to step out the room and go downstairs until the scene stopped playing. I would go far enough to where I couldn't hear the burning broken music discs
I see one of my ethnic friends come by at 8 a.m in the morning and i yell like an old morbid lady “ eeeeh raaape raaaape, eeeeeeeh”. Then white neighbor come out and see me an asian guy in my bathrobe with sunglasses. And say this to me “ hey neighbor, the sun says hello :o :). And i scream some more “ aaaaaaah raaaaape”
I never really thought about it before but I think Johnny Depp was playing Willy Wonka as more of a reclusive type in contrast to Gene Wilder's gregarious, fuller than life performance. He made Willy Wonka as someone who focuses more on his work than he does people, which is why he's always so awkward with them, such as when he's reading the cue cards from his hands. From the flashbacks I get a sense he may have been bullied as a kid, his father was strict and uncaring most of the time, and probably was homeless for awhile. It would make sense Wonka would be the way he is in Tim Burton's adaptation, so I have a newfound respect for Johnny Depp's performance.
I'm not sure about the bullying part (at least when you think about other kids), but he was definitely beat down mentally by his father, which means he likely had very few other childhood friends, which would have also attributed to his reclusiveness.
OMG it took me 15 years to realise that he is quotting a song.. that i just heard for the first time, like 3 minutes ago. I just thought that Willie was just being corky and wierd
@@keileabrooke You disagree? I mean, that's fine and all but I gotta disagree with that disagreement lol. His interpretation of Willy Wonka just seems so right with the tone of the film and the background knowledge that we get about his character. I honestly prefer this version way over the 1971 version mainly because of how much creepier and awkward Willy Wonka is in this film.
Disagree. Depps Wonka is akward and reclusive, but Wilders Wonka had a subtle thing about him that just felt off and that gave him a more creepy and disturbing vibe amid his jovial persona. Wilder is so much better. Plus showing Wonkas past with his dentist dad kills his mystery even more and that's a negative.
I don't much care for Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, nor for his version of Willy Wonka, but damn, Johnny Depp is a good actor. Doesn't sound anything like himself and he barely looks like himself either.
Nah, there are plenty of films where the on-screen Johnny Depp looks a lot like the off-screen Johnny Depp. Even in costume, he's usually fairly recognizable. Without prior knowledge, I don't think a lot of people would look at his Willy Wonka and recognize the actor.
Real Demigoddess ✌ well, i never saw the movie. the first time i heard it, a friend misquoted it and I havent heard it since. i thought it was such a funny phrase that i remembered it. i was wondering when i looked it up just now whether i remembered my friend correctly or if he misquoted. now that i see that misquote is a common one, I can rest in peace.

Not me forgetting about this movie and thinking the audio clip was voiced by Jesse Eisenberg. Really goes to show how much range Johnny Depp truly has, very impressive. He did Jesse Eisenberg's iconic voice 3 years before Jesse got his big break, and the same year he did his first non-indie film.
