It pairs incredibly well with things like Clodsire and bulky Encore Dragonite to harass physical threats, and is one of the few Pokémon able to consistently take Chien-Pao’s icicle crash, the only other consistent Chien-Pao answer, Dondozo, lacks reliable recovery. Usually relying on Yawn cycling or connecting a Fissure to get rid of Chien-Pao. Avalugg, though it has to watch out for sacred sword, does not mind going head to head with most Chien-Pao variants
I love this bastard just because of the Project Habakkuk reference alone. It probably could’ve been an Ice/Grass type, but considering how well Abomasnow faired with that, it’s probably for the best. Maybe it could’ve gotten Heatproof, as a reference for how long it took the concept to melt in a lake, or Bulletproof, as a reference to the officer who, in front of a group showing the properties of pykrete, shot a chunk of pykrete and the bullet ricocheted into another person’s knee…
Tera Poison/Steel Avalugg with Body Press, Iron Defense, Recover, and Crunch has worked surprisingly well for me in lower tiers, provided you have something else that can switch in to special attackers.
I'm genuinely curious on what it'll take for gamefreak to finally bite the sniper bullet and redesign Ice Type's effective chart? Like it can't be that dramatic of a change compared to battle gimmicks like Megas, Z moves, Dynamax etc coming and going right?
I think the simplest and healthiest change would be to make Ice resist Water; buffing and nerfing types that need it respectively. Resisting normal would be nice, too.
@@gontagokuhara5262 Have it resist Water, Ground and Fairy. Ground and Fairy are already to dominant, alongside Water. Ice should resist Water as water easily freezes in the cold, even rivers freeze, Ground becomes less easy to work with when frozen and can't really act against Ice or break out of it without heat, and Fairy already struggles with extreme temperatures like Fire so it should equally struggle doing damage to Ice.
I'd go full scorched earth and make ice resist grass, flying, water, ground, and dragon. Baxcalibur becomes the anti-dragon, Lapras becoming the Fattest of All Time, Crabominable says No Thanks to birds, etc
I always called it “Ice Platform” because if there was a platforming Pokémon game, Avalugg would more then fit the bill of just standing there to be bounced on.
May I make a suggestion? For the Gen 9, where you show common sets, could you from now on also show common terra types? Would help a bit to know how it was played. Thank you
It's also worth noting that Avalugg _finally_ got access to Icicle Crash as of Gen 9- it doesn't really benefit it all that much, especially since it's been nerfed to 85 BP, but it's cool that it finally got it.
I’d replace own tempo with for filter/solid rock to help with the ice or ice/rock weakness, give it spikes or stealth rocks, and increase its hp or special defense by 20.
I would love for Game Freak (I know they won't) to create an ability to make defensive ice types usable. My idea is one called hard ice (name susceptible to change) which turns the rock and steel hits into neutral or maybe resists, depending on what's balanced, very much like thick fat. That wouldn't make Avalugg broken (or other Ice walls) but it'd be a nice addition to make them have less weaknesses while also making sense, since Avalugg's ice looks harder than Rock or Steel tbh haha
I think something worth mentioning is that there was an inverse battle metagame and Avalugg ended up as #1 in usage. It shows that Avalugg actually has really good stats and movepool, but the Ice-type is so terrible defensively it holds it back. If it was Steel/Fairy type it would be an OU staple since it got released I reckon. That physical bulk, Recover, Rapid Spin, Roar, etc, it could've been awesome.
I use Avalugg religiously on my monotype team. It walls the entire physical spectrum amazingly well, only really being threatened by STAB supereffective moves. The 1.5x defense buff in snow only makes it even beefier. Max Spdf invested avalugg can also take a non-supereffective special hit or two. To put its walling capabilties into perspective, Avalugg under snow takes less than half from CB Mega Ray's Dragon Ascent. My current set is +Spdf -Spa 252HP/4Def/252Spdf Iron Defense, Body Press, Rapid Spin, Recover, with HD boots and Ice Body. So far, this set has won 1v1s against Tyranitars, Corviknights, Chien-Piaos and even a leech seeded Mimikyu.
Honestly at this point, I think the main problem is the ice typing itself. I think Avalugg would do just fine if ice got a few more resistances. Then, even though they'd still has a lot of weaknesses to common attacking types, ice Pokemon would at least have some more defensive utility. Ice would continue to be the type of extreme highs and lows, which i think is appropriate. Personally, my candidates for types ice could resist are fairy, dragon, and flying. All of these types have potential lore reasons for being resisted by ice, and they're all common attacking types that would be valuable to resist.
Hisuian Avalugg is just a cruel Joke. Sure it gets a few more resists and turns some weaknesses into neutrals but my god its not worth to get a Ground weakness and turning both your Fighting and Steel weakness into 4x ones.
I like how with hisuian avalugg, they had the chance to really give it a great glow up to make it great, but instead they arguably gave it a worst defensive typing lol
The problem is that any Ice type will never be good defensively. For that to happen, you need stats roughly equivalent to Calyrex-Ice Rider save speed, and then have Weavile’s speed at worst.
My boy Avalugg helped me through my first Y playthrough. He might suck comp wise but he did shockingly better than what I expected from a defensive ice type.
What if it & its prevo got a Frostbite (should that ever come back in any form) version of Will o Wisp accompanied by some usable physical coverage to run alongside in the case of Assault Vest sets (especially in Hisuian form)?
Man, don't do Bug dirty like that, we have enough stuff resisting us as is. Maybe Water could work as something for Ice to resist, Water could use the nerf.
The defense buff was necessary but I miss the passive damage from hail, other types could gain immunity though aurora veil or something. Hail is not a counterpart to sand anymore.
I really like Avalugg, especially because in my monotype Ice team he is the core physical defensive mon and it actually works really well in conjunction with Aurora Veil. It takes 15 to 20% from a Urshifu under the veil. Pretty sick mon
I remember the first time I saw avalugg and that it was a supposed to be slow as molasses and physically defensive I said to my friend next to me "this thing is terrible, ice type is a terrible type to have as a defensive Pokémon what were they thinking?"
Even a mon like glastrier that got far better special defence, a monsterus 145 att great hp and defence is forced to be in the lower tiers seying something of how bad ice type is in singles. speaking of Glastrier, i wonder what tier it will end up in if it returns to gen9 with dlc or Pokemon home, its not the fastest mon for sure, but its buliker overal and stronger than avalugg so it can take hits better and do more damage.
@@N12015 yea fast ice types are good, but the slow ones are just weaknesses destroys them from beeing viable for the most time in the higer tiers, rock, steel, fighting fire weakness is just extremy bad specialy when only resiting 1 type to. glastrier will probably be a better tera user than avalug considering it have 100 HP 145 Att 130 Def AND 110 SP Def. defenitly looks like a better tera user than avalug
I'm curious if ice typing would be fixed defensively if it had an immunity to water. Water basically turns into ice if its cold enough anyways, and with water being as common as it is, it would be an interesting meta change
I really like Avalugg. But I hate that Icicle Crash is all it really has for a physical STAB move and Ice Body. Ice Body and Snow Cloak are overused as stock abilities to give to Ice Pokémon and they aren't that good of abilities in of themselves. At some point, Ice-types like Avalugg should've gotten Filter or Heatproof. Or make an Ice-type equivalent of the following: Water Absorb, Fur Coat, Sand Force or Flash Fire. And there's not even an Icy Terrain as far as I know.
I wonder if, in doubles, you could soak it to help it out. Or maybe use forest's curse or trick-or-treat...just a thought. Not sure if it would be worth it or not.
if avalug had decent special defense it'd be more fun to use - I get that the idea was "oh, it's really physically good but specially sucks" but add that to zero speed and ice typing and it's just unusable. if it didn't at least die from random special attacks I think you could work with the defensively useless ice typing
Let's see how bad Hisuian Avalugg ACTUALLY in the competitive scene if it ever releases Well ig its outclassed by Crabominable as a slow strong Ice type cuz of Avalugg's 4x weakness to Fight and Steel
You forgot notable Avalugg appearances in the games and anime... especially since it's possible Wulfric's Avalugg may be a descendant of Lord Avalugg from PLA, especially dince Wulfric is almost certainly a descendant of Gaeric.
An interesting buff I would think be great for avalugg would be to have an new (H) ability that makes all attacks against avalugg now use it’s physical defence to take the hit Let’s call it Icy Carrier (in reference to it air craft carrier impression)
One thing i’ll add is that a someone who enjoys using the ice type in monotype, I found avalug to be the defensive backbone of the team giving at least one mon that can take a physical hit and providing rapid spin for a type weak to rocks.
I always forget Avalugg exists because there was only like one trainer that had it, and its a rare encounter late game in the wild. But everytime i see it I absolutely love it and wish i had room for it on my party at that point.
i fought someone who used avalugg alongside slowking, since it was a physical wall and special wall teaming up and slowking could boost avalugg's defense with chilly reception. sounds gimmicky, but it only took 30% from my sneasler's close combat.

Ava is currently bossing around in NU,body pressing away, walling massive threats like cetitan, brute bonnet, staraptor etc
With Tera it can eat up hits from band arcanine,it destroys non Tera altaria and golurk with ice spinner,it’s also a good emergency check for cloyster,it can 1v1 mons like hitmontop and registeel with iron defence, stop bulk up incin easily
It is currently at the top of viability list around A- to B+,AVALUGG FANS REJOICE!
Guess you could say this was one... COOL video. Sure is ICE to see Avalugg get some attention.

Day 368.
More than one year has passed, the quagsire remake awaits...
Seeing the rain land on avalugg's back during battle is the best detail 👌
Game freak:Wanna see a bad Pokémon?(Points at avalugg)
Game freak: You wanna see me do it again?(Points at Hisui Avalugg)
Don't forget Avalugg one shot the titanic 🗣🗣🗣
Fun SV Fact - In BSS, the official singles format played on console, Avalugg is quite popular on hard stall.
That's enough material for a whole new Regional form.
Tera Poison/Steel Avalugg with Body Press, Iron Defense, Recover, and Crunch has worked surprisingly well for me in lower tiers, provided you have something else that can switch in to special attackers.
Why bite though?
@@winter9242 Can't hit Ghosts otherwise, only decent option iirc
@@patroka both forms of avalugg learn crunch though so I was wondering why bite
@@winter9242 Sorry, meant Crunch not Bite then
Finally my favorite ice type gets to be in the spotlight
And will melt in that spotlight since a spotlight would probably be like a special attack
this pokemon inspires absolutely nothing in me. i love it
Avalugg: Crippled by being a defensive ice type
Game Freak: Better give ice types more defensive play
Seems like we re getting into newer gen mons. Could you maybe please do one on tsareena. That would be amazing. Love the content
I'm genuinely curious on what it'll take for gamefreak to finally bite the sniper bullet and redesign Ice Type's effective chart? Like it can't be that dramatic of a change compared to battle gimmicks like Megas, Z moves, Dynamax etc coming and going right?
they changed a couple type interactions in gen 2 and nerfed steel defensively in gen 6 so there is precedent for it
I think the simplest and healthiest change would be to make Ice resist Water; buffing and nerfing types that need it respectively.
Resisting normal would be nice, too.
@@trevorjamesnegus Normal types already have it rough without Return.
Baxcalibur becomes the anti-dragon, Lapras becoming the Fattest of All Time, Crabominable says No Thanks to birds, etc
gamefreak: "what if avalugg, but with even worse special bulk and even worse defensive typing in exchange of 10 more speed and attack"
Thank you
1:19 Unlike Shuckle, Avalugg does chuckle
It's also worth noting that Avalugg _finally_ got access to Icicle Crash as of Gen 9- it doesn't really benefit it all that much, especially since it's been nerfed to 85 BP, but it's cool that it finally got it.
I’d replace own tempo with for filter/solid rock to help with the ice or ice/rock weakness, give it spikes or stealth rocks, and increase its hp or special defense by 20.
If Toxapex is Big Stall™️, Avalugg is our Small Stall™️.
Poor Avalugg. Hopefully it'll gain Ice Shard in the future, at least.
Anyway, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
Would love to see Hisuian Avalugg get Ice Shard, Accelerock, and Technician.
Avalugg is the kind of pokemon that is there to fill specific niches when needed, but useless when those things it was meant to deal with is gone.
12:31 How did you said this without laughing? Seriously, Hisuan avalugg has A WORSE TYPING than regular one, and is even frailer on the special side.
And all it took was a defensive stat of Pokémon that would befit legendaries, and that still is not enough.
Eh, X/Y is the easiest mainline pokemon games anyway, so literally everything worked.
What if it & its prevo got a Frostbite (should that ever come back in any form) version of Will o Wisp accompanied by some usable physical coverage to run alongside in the case of Assault Vest sets (especially in Hisuian form)?
Gen 9’s snow was good step in the right direction, but Ice seriously needs another resistance. Maybe to Grass or Bug or something.
Man, don't do Bug dirty like that, we have enough stuff resisting us as is. Maybe Water could work as something for Ice to resist, Water could use the nerf.
Nah, not grass or bug. Waaaaaaaay too many things resist em already.
Maybe a ground or flying resist?
Ice Resistances: Water, Dragon, Ice, Flying, Electric, Normal.
The defense buff was necessary but I miss the passive damage from hail, other types could gain immunity though aurora veil or something. Hail is not a counterpart to sand anymore.
No way. Grass and Bug are already rough offensively and don't need more beatings.
Make Ice resist Water and Flying.
first time I can remember seeing gettyimages in the intro. or at all really
One of my absolute favourite Ice types (and Pokemon in general), I'm glad to see it did... something, at least. More than I expected!
Ah yes.. ice rock… a famously great defensive dual type
4:27 Bars, man, straight up bars
So am i the only clown that went sturdy mirror coat just for the memes????
hoping for bronzong one of these days
I hope you guys talk about how Avalugg takes less than 50% from a swords dance boosted last pokemon Kingambit iron head in snow with aurora veil
How bad SLOW Ice type is. There's also G-Darmanitan who was fast and overwhelmingly strong and terefore busted, and kinda the same for Kyurem.
I'm surprised they didn't delay Avalugg because of the Hisuian variant.
unfortunately, no one knows when the pokemon home update will come that will make hisuian mons tradeable to scarlet and violet
Would it really add much? Aside from having an even worse typing of course.
*Cuts to H-Avalugg getting deleted by Machop Karate Chop*
Isn't worth to wait for a Pokémon would drop to FU without any fame anyway.
I'm curious if ice typing would be fixed defensively if it had an immunity to water. Water basically turns into ice if its cold enough anyways, and with water being as common as it is, it would be an interesting meta change
Avalugg has also been pretty good in 1v1s since its introduction too. Gen 6 1v1s is where I learned to love Avalugg.
Avalugg the defensive Ice type that WORKS**************************
I really like Avalugg. But I hate that Icicle Crash is all it really has for a physical STAB move and Ice Body. Ice Body and Snow Cloak are overused as stock abilities to give to Ice Pokémon and they aren't that good of abilities in of themselves. At some point, Ice-types like Avalugg should've gotten Filter or Heatproof. Or make an Ice-type equivalent of the following: Water Absorb, Fur Coat, Sand Force or Flash Fire. And there's not even an Icy Terrain as far as I know.
Yo Patreons, where Bronzong and Escavalier at????
I'm waiting for something like a Dunsparce redo so that the best of the Gen 9 Pokémon-Dudunsparce-can be talked about
I wonder if, in doubles, you could soak it to help it out. Or maybe use forest's curse or trick-or-treat...just a thought. Not sure if it would be worth it or not.
What if Avalugg had been a steel type instead of ice type?
if avalug had decent special defense it'd be more fun to use - I get that the idea was "oh, it's really physically good but specially sucks" but add that to zero speed and ice typing and it's just unusable. if it didn't at least die from random special attacks I think you could work with the defensively useless ice typing
Can you do one for Mimikyu? Please and thank you
Let's see how bad Hisuian Avalugg ACTUALLY in the competitive scene if it ever releases
Well ig its outclassed by Crabominable as a slow strong Ice type cuz of Avalugg's 4x weakness to Fight and Steel
You forgot notable Avalugg appearances in the games and anime... especially since it's possible Wulfric's Avalugg may be a descendant of Lord Avalugg from PLA, especially dince Wulfric is almost certainly a descendant of Gaeric.
As a huge fan of Avalugg, the day has come for me to feel sad watching FSG!
do primarina next or dhelmise theyre my two favorite pokemon
Well since someone mentioned Habbukak does anyone else remember Naval Ops?
An interesting buff I would think be great for avalugg would be to have an new (H) ability that makes all attacks against avalugg now use it’s physical defence to take the hit
Let’s call it
Icy Carrier (in reference to it air craft carrier impression)
One thing i’ll add is that a someone who enjoys using the ice type in monotype, I found avalug to be the defensive backbone of the team giving at least one mon that can take a physical hit and providing rapid spin for a type weak to rocks.
I always forget Avalugg exists because there was only like one trainer that had it, and its a rare encounter late game in the wild. But everytime i see it I absolutely love it and wish i had room for it on my party at that point.
AVALUGG BROS RISE UP
i fought someone who used avalugg alongside slowking, since it was a physical wall and special wall teaming up and slowking could boost avalugg's defense with chilly reception. sounds gimmicky, but it only took 30% from my sneasler's close combat.
I can tell this video is gonna be filled with so much hard and painful truths.
"Hopefully, it's Hisuian form will bring Avalugg some greater sucess". Yeah... about that...
Wait wtf--I don't play Pokemon games much but I thought Hisuian Avalugg was out already ??
It's not
Im looking forward to using this in my SV kalos only run.
(Unfortunately I'm not sure if it's usable without easy to get AV)
