Garbage sounds as good today, as they ever did in the past and they sounded and looked damn good throughout the past decades. A truly talented and a most resilient band. I love Shirley and I love her band. I also appreciate the political and social awareness expressed recently. I like where you're coming from, please keep it coming.

Listen I like them myselves but can we stop with this blind idolisation? First, they are not the only or the ''most'' resilient band. There are plenty of bands that have the same longevity and consistency. Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Placebo - you name it. Second, this is not ''her'' band lmao, they are all equal members here. Third, they always had this social/political element in their songs (not only recently, where have you been hello) - but in my humble opinion it used to be more nuanced, heartfelt and less-on-the-nose as it is now. Also, every musician now is ''socially aware'', so don't praise them for something literally eveyone else is doing. They are still good but uniqueness is lost.

your first point lists only male bands, or male-led bands - women in music tend to drop-off entirely once they're in or around 40. women in bands tend to only survive if they break solo or retain a younger image. garbage's resilience IS remarkable because they still exist despite this trend. Sure, there are a handful of other bands like Garbage, but it's really, really small. in my view, they are ALL worthy of celebration at this time.
i think you're right - it's not shirley's band, it's a cohort. this perspective is part of a global issue of why bands break up or don't last - their singers become the stars and usually graduate into their own careers. harder issue to resolve though i can understand why people think of bands as associated with the singer.
im not sure if i agree with the social/political element in their catalogue. sure, theyve had some in the past, as most bands and artists do, but not really a collection as potent as this era. all of Garbage's previous singles are pretty much angst/personal issues (WDYLM, SG, Empty, Special, ITIP, WIGU, Push It, Milk, YLSF, etc.) = not really political at all. despite having more songs, their singles haven't really marketed or branded Garbage as a political or anti-power group. to have a new album and your two first singles are a fuck you to the system, its a bit of a departure from always singing about failed relationships or introspective reflections (despite, yes, having a handful of songs on and off the charts that were political). imo, Flipping the Bird is more of a style that fits garbage's branded/public image.
I dont agree that every musician is socially aware, but I do agree that it is a trend right now and garbage has definitely latched on. to think they are not unique because of this isn't fair though; with their sound and their history, they do bring a unique lens to the topic. songs like GodHead only arise as its sung from the perspective of a 50+ year old woman, and its sound only comes from a woman like Shirley. there's loads to celebrate with Garbage, and I think as time goes on should they choose to pump out more decent and relevant material, the more they should be celebrated for it.
old Garbage was better... I don't like this album. Last good album was "Not Your Kind Of People"

Daaaaaamn, it grabs you inmediately.
The chorus instantly brings to mind "The One" (side note: that song deserved more than bonus track status). Between the aggressiveness of the instrumentation and Manson's Chrissie Hynde homage, this is already one of my favorites off NGNM.
