So glad to see that there are other folks out there who are particular about their ball caps. I think my wife is constantly amused by the way I go over the details of mine. I came across your video today because I was looking for a comparison between the '47 MVP and the New Era 940. Watched your video about that & it lead here. I have recently started wearing the 940s after years of 3930s and 920s. I totally agree with you that 940s are better than 5950s when it comes to comfort and fit. I only have a couple 5950s, both low profile, and they always seem to be either way too snug or way too loose.
I love the 39thirty because I have a big head and the L/XL just fits great. I guess, other than the 39thirty, I've only really ever tried snapbacks like the 9fifty. And I hate that with my big ol head I only have like 2 maybe 3 snaps buttoned. They look silly. But maybe, seeing as you said you have an L/XL, I'll try the 9forty.
I personally have fallen in love with the 39thirty. They have versions with the same fabric as the 9forty now. The stretch of the cap is just so comfortable. The 9twenty gives you that washed out relaxed cap effect similar to the '47 clean ups. The 9forty does look great, but the velcro backing I just wasn't into. Like another commenter said, they've now created 9fortys with adjustable backing like the 9twentys.
Torsim, the 39thirty is a great hat, I own a bunch. My issue is that my head size is right between their Med-Large and their Large-XLarge. I tend to go with a loose fitting Large/XLarge now. I wish they would make the 39Thirty with the exact same material as the 50Fifty and with a MLB trade mark on the back. All of mine have alternate team logos instead of the MLB logo.
@@charlesm.metcalf3731 ahhhh man, I had a big problem with the 59fifty size discrepancies. Sounds like the 39thirty just doesn't work for you. Yeah they just throw the secondary logos on the back of the 39thirtys. Glad to hear you found your perfect cap in the 9forty. The 39thirty is the perfect cap for me (recent discovery).
39Thirty fits are about as inconsistent as 59Fifty's. You get one, it fits perfect, you get another of the same size... too tight. Plus you may get another that's too loose. 59fifty's are a mail orderers worst nightmare.
@@BAR-ct7ti I own about 5 or 6 (39thirtys), they've been great for me with no sizing issues yet. I'm between a 7 1/4 and 7 3/8, so the stretch gives me that perfect fit. 59fifty sizing kills me. so many 59fiftys I've wanted, but I just can't risk it anymore!
@@BAR-ct7ti Which is why I really like the 940s! The best case scenario is that you live close to a quality retailer with a huge selection (I don't). Even when I go to team stores, I will try on 3 or 4 of the same style hat because of all the inconsistency when it comes to fit (especially with the 39 Thirtys and 59Fiftys).
The 39THIRTY is pretty much the only fitted cap I wear. The flex band is really comfortable and makes a fitted cap easier to wear. The 9FORTY is the best. The fit is perfect and the quality is perfect.
I bought several of those from Joe Gibbs Racing (their 2021 Team Caps were all 9forty stretch-snap) back when they sold them and got them forwarded to me. Loved them so much I asked New Era directly if they still made them, and they sadly said no. Which sucks, because they were absolutely my favourite as well, so comfy. Not great in the heat, but I'm in the UK, so they're very nice in cold weather lol. I try and pick them up whenever I see them still for sale.
in some other markets outside usa you can only get the 940 in strapback with slider adjustment. never seen one with velcro and team logo. i guess they knew that we from outside usa will never go to the stadium anyway haha, but i always prefer the strapback to the velcro and snapback. 940 is perfect in my opinion because it's not too low or too high and not as boxy as 5950.
HarryUnchained - wow, thanks for the info. Where are you from? That is fascinating that they change production outside the US. And I am 100% with you about some of the other styles being too “boxy.”
@@charlesm.metcalf3731 I'm looking at a 9forty with metal slider at the back at this very moment. Bought in The Netherlands. Never seen them with velcro over here! I do love my 39thirty though. The S/M is a perfect fit for me, so not too tight or too loose. I tend to wear the 9forty and the trucker cap in the summer, and the 39thirty in fall and winter. Do you know if there's a range of 39thirty's in wool? I've only found the 59fifty but find them way too big and boxy.
Hi Charles, thanks for your video and for the interesting comparison. I think establishing whether the 9Forty is Better Than the 59Fifty cap model is highly subjective and ultimately depends on personal preference and style. Although some people are fan of the 5950, their head and face shape might go better with a lower crown less structured cap like the 940. Personally I like both models and each has its pros and cons. The 940 is versatile and cheaper but I go with the 5950 low profile.
I love 39thirty but it's all about head size and shape, some like one thing another like something else, but 39thirty for me just has that comfy feeling no other cap can give me you put it over your head and it just sit like a nice fitting sock. I like 59fifty too but it's a real problem with the sizes, I don't have a store close to me where I can try before buy. So ordering them online are a bit of a problem, I ended getting a hat stretcher and buying sometimes the smallest size i can fit then if its tight i give it a stretch with the tool. But such a pain to always struggle with, 39thirty I buy it and it fits everytime 🧢🔥
A good fitting 3930 is golden, but I am just in between sizes. I have a stretcher and have used it plenty on 5950s. You would think NewEra would have some quality control in place to assure standard sizing. I am guessing Nike will buy them out in the next decade anyway :(

Personally, I absolutely love my White Sox 9FORTY. First and foremost, it was a heck of a lot cheaper than many other ball caps and secondly, it's adjustable. It's actually a 9FORTY with an old-school snap closure in the back, which I think is great. I've had 59FIFTYs in the past, but keeping the size consistent is impossible; invariably, they all shrink down over time and I freaking hate that. It's annoying.
Good video. I have to say I really like the 49FORTY (fitted e.g. L, XL, XXL, etc.). The 49FORTY never gets any love and is a bit hard to find. I have several. I really like the profile and soft cotton fit. The sweatbands have always been black on mine, which hide any stains or yuck wear. I've never really liked stretch fit or Velcro closures. I also really like the 9TWENTY. The 9TWENTY isn't quite a dad hat per say as much as the cleanup by '47, which is okay for me.
@@charlesm.metcalf3731 I think New Era has discontinued the sale of the 49forty. I snagged a few from a website over a year ago, but haven't really seen them since.
