I think the idea is that the armor is like oobleck (water and corn starch) when struck. It reactively hardens to the strike, but otherwise remains flexible. This is most evident after a hard strike to the armor makes it shatter, which elastic things typically don't do when struck.
For example, how Vegeta's armor cracked when Frieza was punching him. It makes a lot of sense that it'd be some kind of oobleckian polymer. My only real question is: how do the pauldrons stretch to fit the oozaru dude with nothing pulling on them?
@@mavendeo maybe it’s somehow designed to remain relatively proportionately shaped no matter what, so when any part of it stretches enough the whole thing grows?
Are you, perhaps, suggesting it **hardens in response to physical trauma?**
Thing about stormtrooper armor is most of those troopers (say, the ones shot in the opening of A New Hope) aren’t dead. It’s mass produced shit designed to be cheap, scary and to be JUST good enough to keep them alive by dispersing the heat and some of the impact from blaster fire. Good armor is expensive. Training and outfitting a trooper is also expensive. But bacta, the magical algae wonder drug that does all but regenerate severed limbs, is surprisingly cheap. A dead trooper has to be replaced; a damn-near-but-not-quite dead trooper can be dumped in a bacta tank for a few days and then shipped back out. It aint beskar, but it’s good enough. Just.
Yup and if the armor was really good (like beskar) then not only would it be really expensive, but they’d have nothing to recover as it’d be looted after every battle.
The armor does work against normal civilian allowed weapons. The rebels are using heavy weapons thought.
Also troopers have a 77% accuracy
Wich is very good
Wich just goes to show how much plot armor the protagonists in star wars movies have
wow that's like how actual armies buy and make products, cheap and just good enough to do what it's meant to
Just like modern body armor it will stop a few rounds, and you're still going to get injured but it keeps you alive. You may get knocked flat on your butt or you may be able to walk it off. And just like modern body armor storm trooper armor does have a failure point, a powerful enough shot or a enough shots will degradate the armor enough to cause a fatal injury.
It actually helped Raditz and was almost unbreakable for the z cast in the first arc so yes it is helpful against powerless enemies like most of the planets that the freeza establishment destroys
If i remember correctly, sayan armor is specifically designed to sustain blows that could otherwise be lethal. Some enemies like frieza actually needed techniques made specificalli for piercing, like the destructo-disk or Frieza's death beam.
Well it WOULD work as actual armor considering people don't typically shoot laser beams and punch craters in the ground. Since it's for protection when conquering other plantes I'm sure it would be fine against swords and such
Exactly no earthling gun is shooting threw that when they can take blunt hits from characters like broly frieza and a weaker character like zarbon who hits harder than the world's strongest nukes

Yeah in dbs vegetas armor only started breaking near the last 10 or 6 minutes of the ToP
Okay, in dragon ball z, that armour has still taken a LOT before breaking up. Usually the saiyan wearing it looks more beaten than there armour. I'm not sure how well the armour handels kinetic force combined with KI

Krillen one shot vegita through his armour on namek so he could abuse his zenkai. Their armour is piss
Stormtrooper armour actually protects you. Intead of getting a single fatal wound to the chest for example it disperses the hit across the entire body. Same goes for the armour the clones wear.
But because it disperses the force to the entire body, it stops you from dieing but it is often also enough force to knock you out. This is why certain badasses take multipile shots before dieing or being knocked out. Its not them biting through a damaged organ, but them just biting through a hard blow to the body.
The armour is also highly protective of the various other dangers you might come across in a fight. Shrapnel, things falling on their head and stuff should be of no danger.
Ofcourse more powerfull blasters do still kill you. The blasters the mandalorians use are often on the higher end of pistols, and han solos blaster is like the equavilant of a desert eagle. It is safe to say that anyone who he hits in the head or body is 100% dead

"Sans can wear this armour"
*Megalovania starts playing*
Thing about stormtroopers armor is that it actually does its job better than saying armor as depicted on screen. It disperses the plasma bolts fired at it through the whole armor so that instead of being lethal, the shot will just incapacitate. Majority of troopers we see downed are still alive as a result, unless they fall from great heights or get lightsabered or hit with a much, much, much stronger plasma bolt like from a heavy weapon

Chiaotzu’s self-destruct on Nappa in the Saiyan Saga was probably equivalent to a decent real-world explosive and Nappa’s armor suffered little to no damage so it’s incredible by Earth standards at the very least.
It seems useless now that characters are just planet buster level casually, but you have to remember that other than Vegeta and Nappa, the "average" Saiyans power level was about Raditz level before. Without armor, any normal laser could go right through them. Vegeta's armor was durable enough to keep Yajirobe's slice across his back minimal and knocking him out rather than killing him. It was not enough to fully protect him, but it very clearly gave much protection at the time. So it does have some resilience to it to block some of the damage of that blow. If I remember right it also helped Vegeta survive being crushed by Great Ape Gohan. During the time of Planet Vegeta, that armor gave protection from the enemies the Saiyans fought against. Now because of their power level, they only attract and fight opponents who can rival them. So yeah, it doesn't protect much against their current opponents. Vegeta himself only wears it as tradition. He is still loyal to Planet Vegeta and the Saiyan ways. He is the prince after all. Theres probably some sentimental value to it as well. Also, after being given their armor in early fights, they didn't realize how strong Freiza was in his perfect form. They wore armor in the hopes that it would help them out in some way.
Well, Raditz was magnitudes stronger than 21st WMAT Roshi, who atomized the moon. Considering that, the armor is still impossibly strong.
So it would be ideal for us as long as we don't fight gods
D-did he say Sans “megalovania intensifies”

Zarbons armor was the best.
It made him fight his best because basically every vital target minus the torso was exposed to striking
You sure your wording is right cause that wouldn't make sense at all
It protected center of mass from gunfire, which it should easily absorb. But it made him vulnerable to close range strikes. I'm not sure why people are confused by this statement
@@chrismanuel9768 probably because it's the same armor design as everyone else aside from the cape
If it is flexible then each punch will feel at it's 100 per cent.
Lol no its literally the opposite, leather is a very flexible fabric that provides good protection and the whole point of it is to mitigate damage by either blunt force or from cuts. So the Sayian armor would do the exact same.
@@DevilSlayr also what ever magic sci fi material or method its made with makes the saiyan armor flexible when pressure is applied from the inside, but rigid and stone-like when applied to the outside.
it makes no sense but thats what is shown in the show
@@jamesbarnett8832 tbf, technology is crazy in the dbz universe. Capsules, infinte energy sources, healing pods flying cars, laser blasters, drugs to turn you into an animal person etc...
So honestly the Sayian armor doesn't really break the norm.
@@DevilSlayrSo this is awkward because both you and OP are right. You are correct in assuming that a soft (as in padded) surface will avoid shock, and a cause of that is flexibility, which is correct. And the OP is correct in saying that a flexible material may not absorb shock well because it's stretchy, (imagine wearing a balloon as armor).
The key is thickness, a thick yet flexible surface will provide padding, but a thin and flexible surface will not, this is my conclusion. Have a nice day.
@@kingsizedmidget7294 well if thickness is the only concern than thats fine, if you ever get a look at damaged Sayian armor, you can see that in some areas its nearly an inch thick if not thicker. So we're not really talking about balloon armor here.

Could you judge the dark souls boss weapons of how effective they'd be as actual weapons?
One of the many explanations for storm trooper armor is that it usually keeps the trooper alive. Trooper armor won't stop a blaster from hurting you but it will often turn a fatal hit into an incapacitating one. This is why, in a new hope after attacking Leia's ship, they check to see if the downed troopers are alive.
Imagine how the people on the planets Saiyans conquered felt, not only are a bunch of great apes attacking them, but they're in full armor their blasters can't even get through
Vegeta going *out of his way* to get armor for Krillin and Gohan when they were going to fight Frieza only for it to do literally nothing is probably the funniest thing in DBZ to me.
The armor that Frieza Force soldiers where is effective if the person you're facing against is weaker than you.
So if Raditz landed on Earth and fought the US Military.
He could probably take a nuke to the face and his armor wouldn't even be scratched, like we're talking about a guy who can one shot the Moon.
Never forget that Yajirobe cut though Vegeta's armor in the Saiyan Saga with just a regular ol' Earth katana.
Then Toriyama laughed and said “now let’s give Vegeta those SSJ3 brows y’all wanted in 2002!”
i think its meant to not let weaker soilder get killed by blasters/ non ki projectiles
There upper arms are always exposed and it annoys me 😭
You are annoyed by the arms. Some of them have exposed groins. Like Nappa with his tighty backies.

Love how they made an incredibly durable armor that doesn't protect against one of the main things they use in battle... LASER BEAMS
Looks weird how they’re flexible meaning it’s soft but when they break it looks hard
Gotta love the trope of armor that only protects characters from things they are already resilient against.
They give you a passive defense boost so even if you can't really on it, it is always better to have one instead of none at all
Last statement reminds me of how in Dark Souls series you usually don’t wear armor because it’s good. You wear it because it looks good
I started crying when I saw the word 'sans'
Theres many instances of someone being shot or punched through the armor. I think I even saw rocks go though it once!

"I WASN'T WEARING MY ARMOR!"
The strongest direct attack any of the armor has ever taken and survived I feel like would have to be when Chiaotzu blew himself up against Nappas back. It took a point blank explosion and the armor stuck together
I haven't watched dbz but the Stormtrooper armor analogy immediately make sense to me, like it could protect you from plasma bullets of a cheap blaster but it wouldn't help much against a literal blade of plasma
You know you reached peak armor performance
When the armor becomes fashion
I mean I remember something my uncle told me about the armor he had in the US army.
It wasn't made to make them bullet proof, thats impossible. But in the event that they get shot its supposed to help make it more survivable.
Based on the show (up till about frieza) It appeared to do that. It even kinda helped them a little bit against frieza.
When it’s so flexible you could probably be impaled by blunt force before breaking, but the plot kicks in
That armor was for conquering small week planets (like earth) and on earth we have guns for defense so the armor worked perfectly for them as they don't have to fight gods at that time.
That's about the best damn description I've ever heard for saying armor :)
You'll find that despite Goku not wearing armor, he is protected by the plot armor

I never expected this man to be so cultured and wise.

'even sans can wear this armour.'

When you don't have a job so your job becomes remembering fictional lore
The armor starts breaking a lot more when you get to around dodoria’s level which in the frieza force was around the top like 10 or something and so in most instances it’s pretty good, nappa’s suit survived a lot of punishment and Vegeta’s was mostly intact aside from some padding on the shoulders and groin by the end of the saiyan saga
When one size really do be fittin all
Dude is dressed like he is going to a wedding, but before he just wants to talk to us about weapons and armor in fiction 😭
The saiyan armor has 2 significant features. First off is to add protection from less powerful races when conquering them. Secondly is to add durability to the body, on top of what their ki gives them. This durability is compounding and exponential, relating to the ki. Therefore it does add something, we just never see how much it adds because we almost never see vegeta without armor
Yajirobe almost cut through it once.
It apparently prevented vegeta from getting crushed by gohan in his great ape form but that’s really one of the only times it was mentioned to be useful that I can recall
in all fairness, wearing that armour while fighting the main characters in Dragon Ball is like trying to wear a Stab-Proof vest against a GAU-8
I was thinking the armour would just appear in some arsenals in 2025 for the example.

It’s mainly used for Smaller enemies, back when Dbz didn’t have planet busting humans and in the “Older” days, no real species could stand up to saiyans like others and if some could, they’d only do mild damage and the armor would protect them from any damage.

I don't think one time in the entire franchise a single person ever said "Thank Goodness I had this armor on, it really made a difference."
actually when Vegeta got sliced in the back, it probably saved him from a fatal blow
The only time I ever remember the armor actually working, was when kid Gohan headbutted Raditz in the stomach after breaking out of his pod.
When gohan hit raditz with a headbut the armour protected him, keep in mind piccolo was moon level when raditz came to earth and gohans powerlevel when he hit raditz was almost twice piccolo.
It's amazing armor when you're not fighting literal planet busters.
I would love to see a smaller series where you follow Saiyans invading less powerful species, and the armor actually stopping their weaponry or weaker powers.
Also. It could be a fear factor, like you see these guys fall from the sky and then blow up areas around them, and then they just walk up, their armor puts the fear into their opponents and stall them from actually fighting.
Arguably the armor protected Nappa from Chiaotzu kamikaze attack.
Thinking about it, it isn't very durable against gods and other Saiyan, but if you consider the Saiyan favorite pastime is to conquer less advanced planets it might make some sense?
