it doesn't need to be better to be worth it. it isn't better right now, anti-cheat but more important to me, modding just isn't as easily supported. Unity Mod Manager for instance just doesn't work, and figuring out how to do it manually is not something that is documented because they expect the tool to work. but it doesn't need to be better to be worth it, freedom and privacy is more important than the small issues we have. Linux is better overall, but it isn't specifically better for gaming.

@@xymaryai8283 the game files are the same as on windows. Modding works the same as on windows, you can probably use that unity mod manager through wine/proton. If there is not already a Linux alternative for it.
Win 11 is a terrible product and I refuse to use that spyware machine. Linux will definitely be my daily driver after Win 10 reaches EOL, sometime before 2026. Corporations suck and their products should not be the mainstream pick when free and open source alternatives like Linux exist.

The forced TPM 2.0 requirements is what kills me where is the proof TPM 2.0 is more secure I have a motherboard with no TPM what so ever can game on Steam without remaining secure on a scam service either Microsoft goes back to the old route or we will all boycott Microsoft and have them file bankruptcy the customer has the power not the corporation.
One thing i wanna suggest tho is, get acquainted with Linux in the meantime, I've been messing around with linux since 2015, finally jumped ship in April last year after windows screwed me over and never looked back. Been running Debian since, only started dual booting it with Mint since the past weekend and yeah I'm really happy. I wouldn't have been able to jump at a moment's notice if i didn't mess around prior to it. Best of luck ✌️
Why wait? You can get started with a dual boot or even just a virtual machine to start messing around with it today! Another good suggestion I've read is to start switching to open source alternatives to the programs you use, so when it comes time to finally switch, you're not learning a new OS and new apps at the same time.
With MS going full in on AI and the spyware and security threats they will be, there's been a huge uptick in Linux as an alternative videos out there which is great. Add in what Valve has done with Proton along with the WINE team efforts, there is little reason why any studio would not include Linux support other than corporate affiliations. I would like to see Lutris improve game support for new releases.
I have purchased a new PC and as someone who doesn't want to touch win11 with a 10ft barge pole I will be putting linux on it and probably surprising a lot of people by being able to play games on it if conversations I've had are anything to go by. Already have linux on my laptop and had no problems.

Congratulations having a new PC 😉 One question regarding that: did it come with a windows license? If so, did you do that on purpose? No offense here but people also need to acknowledge, that we should stop buying PCs with pre installed and licensed Windows. Not only those come with bloatware but we throw money into Microsofts big mouth. Why should they stop doing such nasty stuff like "Recall" then? Why, if Windows is "sold" that much, should big publishers care about other OSes? This decision when buying a new PC must become way more concious then it is today. @@Nightwulf1269 I got one with my laptop as I intended to dual boot it at first but then I never actually loaded it again once I put linux on so I just got rid of it. For the PC I skipped the windows licence, £100 saved.
@@Person01234 great, thank you sharing that. My experience is, that for most people it's just a question of courage to just try it. When they do, they never look back. I mean, there are some special needs which make it fairly difficult. E.g. if you're into music creation, there are lot's of programs which have no real twin in the linux world and do not support the hardware connectivity though they are basically running under linux. But without that hardware support they render useless. But that are rare exceptions. For the majoriy it's just about doing it.

I made the jump 6 months ago and I haven't had a single regret. Started out with Pop!_OS and then made the switch to Arch. With everything happening in the world and the constant integration of AI into everything at an OS level, I feel it's safer to educate ourselves and get away from Big Brother and Big Tech. Gaming on Linux is one step into a better future.
💯!! I completely agree. I still have windows installed on my other drive for some work stuff and a couple games but I stripped every Microsoft related thing from it. Linux is the way to go! The more people we can get using it the better support and compatibility we will get as well!

That would be amazing! My biggest issue right now is support for peripherals. For example I can't use certain features on my Corsair mouse because I can't use ique software. And non of my SIM racing equipment is compatible with Linux. I'm working on trying to create a system/workflow that in corporates both with our losing functionality. Have tried gpu passthrough with vfio/kvm/qemu only for running games in Windows VM seamlessly and near native speed? Also there's something called "looking glass" for kvm. I have never used any of these technologies and I am wondering how well they work.
I have used GPU passthrough before. Once it's set up it's fairly seamless but setting up GPU passthrough properly can be a little bit of a task and I suggest having a dedicated GPU separate from the main one that is running your Linux environment.
After not seeing any compelling reason to move off Windows in decades, Microsoft has finally put down the last straw for me and once they stop supporting Win 10, I’ll only use a pirated copy of Win 11 in a VM when absolutely necessary. If MS has finally pushed me off Windows, I know there will be many others as I really, really didn’t want to spend the time learning a new OS just to do what I already can. But it’s at that point for me and I see an unprecedented number of others showing the same sentiment
Come on over to the good side!! You won't regret it! It's a learner curve but like I said in the video most distros make it really easy and some even help you learn along the way.
@@TheBlackDon Yeah it does seem a lot easier than when I first dabbled with Linux. And before the main issue was a lack of polished software options, drivers, things that add to the curve. Now hardware drivers are not much of an issue and while the software won’t be apples to apples till a lot more people move over, it’s workable now. I considered, only briefly, changing to Mac but it’s trading one abusive partner for another, and paying more.
Question? How does gpu works on linux, i mean can i use for example adrealine driver and 7900xtx or might be issues. I know older and more popular hardware is easier to run but i need to know cause no one gives clear answer. Also is there really that bad stutter in some games especially titles with DirectX engines?
So AMD drivers are already built into Linux distributions. You won't have any issues with a 7900xtx. On my laptop I have a 7600m xt and it runs perfectly without any additional set up. I have never experienced any stuttering. I used to on my desktop but that was on my Nvidia 4060 on Wayland before official support came. It really works no differently from Windows except you don't need a program to install drivers. You just either have them baked in if you have and or you can install Nvidia drivers through most software centers or the terminal.
My Radeon RX7600XT likes Linux very much and AMD is all over the FOSS filosophy... so the amdgpu drivers is included in the kernel by default:.. no need to install any GPU drivers at all... Linux rocks... :-)

I really hope they do make Linux mainstream more than it is now. There is just so much overhead with the Windows PC. Also all the privacy issues that go with it. And now Microsoft is forcing everyone to get a Microsoft account in order to use future Windows operating systems

Yeah Linux definitely still has a ways to go but most of the issues nowadays are just compatibility issues. Otherswise it's a rock solid experience for normal everyday computing.
Fedora 40 some of the steam games not launching for me have tried different proton version but no luck. How do I troubleshoot this further. Is there any logs will store for games not launching
do you know about protondb? it's a website where users can list details about what proton version & steam launch options they use to get a given game to work on their PC. You'll find it useful if you don't know about it already
Yeah I would def check protondb to see the compatibility for the game. I would say you need to google each game individually and apply the proton version that works best. Typilcally I just use ProtonGE and it just works. But I am not sure which games you are trying to run. I only play a handful of games currently
@Silverblue-se6iy most of them not worked. Still testing and trying on different distro as well. Witcher 3 was worked after latest nvidia 555 July released version on KDE same nvidia version crashed my os on Gnome version.
I switched to Linux Mint from Windows about a month ago and haven't looked back. I only have to get on Windows (I did dual boot just in case) when my nephew wants to play XDefiant, but that is about it. I was glad that some anti-cheat stuff works, like Helldivers 2 and Elden Ring work perfectly fine for me. And was glad that MMOs work out of the box as well, like ESO, EQ, LoTRO and DDO. I play so many games, and aside from XDefiant, they all work beautifully. Couple simple tweaks here and there, but thanks to ProtonDB it couldn't be easier for the most part.
Yeah I agree! It's getting better and better every day! I think I saw some people get Xdefiant working on the steam deck It might be worth a shot taking a look at one of those tutorials! Then you won't need your windows at all!

i tried linux mint and gaming was super laggy, at least in cs2, like 200 fps less and drops, returned to windows that same day, i tried to like linux but it seems that is not for me.
I agree it's not for everyone. Just like Mac OS is not a bad system but it's not for me. I don't play cs2 so I can't give you much feedback there but I am able to run the finals, overwatch, and pretty much any single player game with no stutters and good fps. The only thing I still need my windows install for is COD and Sim racing.
I really want to move linux, but for some software and games didnt run like r6s so yeah i'm still not thinking for using linux and btw i'm using laptop software like msi ai for controlling my battery laptop, i hope can move to linux
I'm not sure about MSI but I know Asus and Lenovo have alternative software to still manage your hardware. Someday you will be able to make the switch!! 😎💯
Way ahead of ya mate, Bazzite as a daily driver on my desktop and of course steamos on my steam deck. Hoping Nvidia continues to get more Linux support so more people can jump in with less hassle. I had a few issues with gamescope and the RX7900XT but given time those issues were fixed.
If anyone can help, I'd be eternally grateful - I'm running the game Sons of the Forest under Linux Steam, and I really want to run a mod-manager (RedModmanager - which has to run only one time as a standard Windows app in order to install it's fixes). Mmmm, I don't have too much experience with Redmodmanager. Have you tried checking out some forums on Reddit that's typically where I go. I did a little bit a research and came accross this on github github.com/ToniMacaroni/RedLoader. I hope this helps!!
There's something called Nobara. Currently installed it on my old laptop recently. (might try to run those linux sh I got from my GOG game purchases, but mainly my desktop is my main gaming machine) Nobara is apparently developed by the same person who did Proton-GE.
Done. Running ArchLinux. I got so tired with Windows and Microsoft schenigans. And finally HDR more or less works with Plasma so out good excuses. Everything seems to work just fine out of the box (intel 12900k, Aorus Z690 PRO / Radeon 7900 XTX). I was a bit worried on how Baldur's Gate 3 runs. But luckily no issues so far! And also Stellaris, Crusader Kings 3 and other Paradox titles seem to work just fine. Well. there was one issue. YNAB 4 crashes all the time with Wine with my huge-ass-multi-year-ledger. So therefor decided to learn how GnuCash works and it seems to do the job just fine.
Nice!! Arch is probably my favorite overall. I bounce between Bazzite and Archcraft. I'm lazy so I like that Archcraft is pre riced and ready to go for the most part.
@@TheBlackDon I try to avoid and fight against distrohopping currently. Did that way too much 15 years ago :) Have to say that Arch (or linux kernel) has changed a lot in 10 years. Last time I had to configure and setup all kind of modules to get the system working. Now everything is OK from out-of-the-box. Makes ArchLinux installation so much more easier as no need to configure Xorg-settings or fight with the audio. Great stuff!
Not going to lie, there are times that I think such videos are a propaganda for people to hate on Windows. (Not referring to your video but to others that tells people to switch to Linux and etc.) However, I have made the switch to Fedora 40 last Sunday and since I know what I am doing I got everything set-up without any problems. I can do basic tasks, game, emulate, code and chill. (I am no content creator but I can also stream and edit pictures/videos.) I am actually enjoying it and if nothing goes wrong I may just stick to it. So far, I am having the same experience as I would on Windows. (Based on my use case of the operating system.) Even though I like the UI style of Windows 11 and how everything works out of the box, I have made the switch because of "Co-Pilot" and because of "Recall" I know that re-call isn't available yet but I do care about my privacy so that's what "motivated" me I guess. I could be wrong but I'd say even right clicking is faster than on Windows 11.
Yeah I have seen a few of those videos. I still use windows for certain things I don't dislike the operating system itself I mainly don't like the direction they are going and all of the Microsoft apps. I'm glad you made the switch! Welcome! I do think most tasks are just faster on Linux, Less ram usage as well. I love that I can make everything a macro. I like using window managers too and mapping everything to the keyboard for a really nice productive environment.
I was a lifelong Windows user, I paid for the product and I was honestly disappointed with the way Microsoft treats its customers. The ads and the telemetry are inexcusable, I'd fully understand if these were featured in a free windows copy that you wouldn't have to pay for, like Google does with its services. But no, Microsoft has the audacity to demand stupid amount of money for a bloated adware some dare to call OS. Anyway, I'm a Windows 11 refugee, I switched to Mint about a month ago and never looked back :D
The amazing thing is that Linux is the best way to play retro windows games. I love playing Shogu, I had to do a lot of tweaking to run on windows (due to glide api) on Linux it worked out of the box with Heroic. I was impressed
90% of my steam library seems to work fine, i don't really play that 10% of games anyways. it's mostly stuff that was either free or like 50 cents, and some ubisoft/ea games i'll never play again.
If Vsync gets more polished on Linux I'd switch, (Vsync and fps goes haywire in other apps when I have a game running), I don't even mind a few games that don't work.
I ditched Windows 11 and then went to Bazzite Linux. I use it as my daily and has not impeded my PC usage at all. All my other PCS I have around my house are running zorin or Linux mint. My wife is the only one that has a Windows 11 PC still.
Awesome!! I downloaded bazzite on my wife's computer. It's actually a good distro for people who casually use their computer. Minimizes them messing anything up with it being immutable. I personally bounce back and forth between Bazzite and Archcraft.
@@TheBlackDon Because Linux Mint was VERY finicky on my gaming PC (controllers not working, audio was insistently crackling, Steam Proton not working, it couldn't even restart properly) (It is also worth noting all of this was on an RX 6650 XT, and AMD is reportedly more Linux friendly than nVidia) .....only for it to install on an old all YOGA laptop from like 8 years ago and literally everything is flawless about the OS

The Microsoft OS was designed for developers and users to create and run software from an interface. It also took care of file management but generally left all control over the PC to the user. Nowadays the Windows platform wants to manage and integrate into every component on the PC. Even now they are working with hardware manufactures to make PC components Microsoft compliant through things like secure boot and hardware TPM. It should be obvious to anyone that Microsoft are attempting to push out their competition, or at the very least control the distribution of Non Microsoft resources. It's not there yet but they are taking more ground every day and I for one see where it's heading. Only through a drastic and immediate shift in OS popularity will these hardware manufacturers reconsider how much influence Microsoft should have.
This is so true. I see the direction they are going and I really don't want to let it happen. If more people start using Linux manufacturers will have to adjust. I was just saying on another post that I can't wait till I walk into a best buy and see a whole Linux section! I may be dreaming here but we need to make it happen.
It's not only Steam that I want on Linux tho I'm a big GoG user, alas lot of games are still working on windows. Hopefully Valve is doing more and more work to help portability of games, I just wish DRM-free games from GoG would all work.
To @dranon0o point I guess it just needs to be easier where you don't have to run games through a certain platform for it to work they should just work from where you got the game from. But I guess that's the point of the video. If we all just use Linux we will force the devs and companies to just make everything work with Linux.
I love GoG too. But I very much disagree with you here. The reason for my disagreement is API rot on Linux. Linux has no solid gaming API and all software on here relies on package maintainers maintaining the ever changing landscape in linux and recompiling/distibuting. Now in Gaming land on Windows, Devs ship a game and most of the time it remains immutable binary with no updates (or just updates at the start and that is it). This is why native linux games work in the initial years, then API rot sets in on linux side, and all of a sudden your games don't run any more and the game devs will never ever update it. But with windows APIs, these APIs are backwards compatible at binary level pretty much for all time. So Wine with Windows games is our very best shot at game preservation. Ain't not game devs got time/money to keep recompiling their native linux binaries and distrobuting them for free. Just does not happen. So what we have right now with Valve/Proton advancements is a golden age for gaming.
All my GoG games work fine... I run them through Heroic. Some I had to do some searching and a lot of troubleshooting to find the right settings or versions of Wine/Proton to use. Steam makes it easy for Steam, but other companies do not care (yet), so the work gets put on you.
The last problem that i have and motivate me to spent space on my SSD with a dual boot is the games, but, now i try my new laptop without dual boot, install Steam and play Red Dead Redemption 2, and i am surprised with how easy is to play games, i have some trouble with Nvidia driver install because of the Nvidia Optimus, but i ha e solved with an gnome extension that allows to select between integrated/discrete GPUs
Unless you're playing a online game with anti cheat. Most games just work nowadays. If we can get more on more people on Linux devs will have no choice but to enable things for Linux. Thanks for being a Linux user!

7 out of 10 native games have some issues on distros other than Ubuntu. Libraries missing, fonts missing, shaders can't compile, etc. Wine / Proton runs fine (because it's technically a Windows layer)
Linux has the huge problem of high switch costs compared to Windows. For office work I think Linux is awesome but everything I'd consider being more of a "power user" on Windows who is not very tech savvy will have a lot of issues with Linux. You just have to consider that, to many people, jumping through extra hoops is already a no-no. Like Proton QT for example. Most people are used to seeing something and it "just works", Linux doesnt provide that due to lacking adoption. Most people arent devs like me, they will get frustrated, they dont wanna search for potential workarounds for 4 hours just to play a simple game or run an emulator. I like Linux Mint but this wont be the year of Linux, neither will next year, especially not for gaming....

I 100% agree with you. The Anti-Cheat system is understandable piece of the environment, but until the game manufacturers get off their lazy collective butts the linux community is suffering. I just recently switched to Linux Mint and I am testing now. I still am dual booting both, but I am finding my PC runs better on Linux and NO added applications that I don't need. I hate that windows is adding ton's of AI spyware and all the telemetry its currently doing behind the scenes. Run Wireshark and you'll be amazed how much slower your internet connection is on WIN because of this. Linux just provides a better experience so far. I do have one thing to say and yes, it was troublesome to get my nvidia card working on Linux so this is keeping a lot of people away from Linux. It is getting better though! I am looking forward to the day I can finally say goodbye to Win 11 ! Spyware junk.
I am looking forward to it too! There are still a few things that I do have to have a windows drive available on my computers. I acatully don't really have any issues with my nvidia drivers on linux. Most if not all the distros I use just seem to work for me. I do have a new card tho so idk if that is the reason why you are experiencing isssues?
@@TheBlackDon no I have a 3050, still just testing to see what works and what doesnt. Having some sound issues but working on it. Most of it is getting used to Linux and getting out of the habit of windows. It's a comfort issue. Mint has been really good though.
Low key. The one thing that’s kinda the most frustrating on Linux is piracy. It feels like you have to go through all these hoops just get it to work and there’s no easy guide on how to do it. While with windows it feels more intuitive
what usually works for me is adding the game to steam (as a non steam game) and then running it though proton, I'm currently playing Elden Ring like this with no problems. Usually fitgirl installers run fine with wine, then just find where the game was installed and add to steam. hope it helps ;)
if games with anticheat actually ran on my Linux system I would mainstream Linux and never go back to windows, but sadly thats not the case... what really really makes me mad is Easy Anticheat already has a Linux SDK but none of the devs will utilize it.
I'm almost OK for linux to remain as is. The reason being if it goes mainstream, there is a risk of corporate takeover and resulting enshitification just like what we see on the daily with Windows land. I like my Pop OS as it is. It's not intrusive, doesn't abuse privacy to my knowledge. Just lets me get on with doing my stuff and playing games too. Remember, we have already had Poettering and his SystemD - and now he is gobbled up by Microsoft as an employee since 2022. Conflict of interest.
My Windirt 11 has died suddenly and has destroyed the EFI-Partition on that SSD so that even my Supergrub-Stick couldn't find a Windirt anymore on that drive. So I installed MX-Linux instead which I had in it's version before in a Dualboot-Szenario on a HDD on the SSD as its actual version with the debian Bookworm Kernel. And since that I work and play almost the same way as before in Windirt 11 and even better and more efficient than ever before. Okay, I have a little experience with Linux and Terminalusage but with that new Derivates like MX you also can do the most tasks without it when you are not familiar with terminalusage but I like it working from time to time with the commandline and I think this is also good in terms of learning stuff for you job-life. So forget about Windows and its data-greedy behavior especially now with Copilot&Recall and the new nonsense of automatically activating Onedrive when installing Windows 11. No more Windows 11 or Versions to come on my private devices and especially not for gaming that works fine and smooth for most of my games. Horrible enough that one has to use that garbage Window-Os in most jobs!
Yeah Linux is really not that hard and a lot of times if you try to use the terminal a quick Google search gets you right where you need to be. Most of the Linux community doesn't mind helping either. I'm glad you made the switch!! I will never go back to daily driving Windows on any of my devices. Thanks for telling your story!! 😎💯
@@TheBlackDon next week i guess are the last parts here and I can update my machine a little bit from a 8 year old Intel-System to a not so old AM4-System with an Ryzen 5 5.600 and guess this will speed up the whole thing a little. Then I will install the new KDE Plasma 6.1 and the actual Gnome so that I can sometimes change my desktop form day to day. That's also a advantage you will never have in Windirt. I'm always glad finding channels like yours with interesting Linuxstuff and it's daily use which demonstrates clearly that windirt isn't necessary any longer and where I can find new infos about Linux. Sorry but Linux still has a massive problem with ease of usability for external hardware it also lacks some critical apps like whole Adobe lineup. Another problem is the obsession of the Linux community with only using foss when there is clearly better proprietary stuff around(Im not hating on open source just there’s just some stuff that has better proprietary versions) and the elitism in general(UsE tHe MaNuAl). There is also the point that your workplace/institution you work at will force you to use stuff that is only available on windows. I also hope for the year of the Linux desktop but unfortunately I think its not there yet
Yeah these are all extremely valid points. I am not one of those enthusiast that only use foss programs. If the proprietary version is better I will use and don't even mind paying for it if it's worth it. Overall tho I do think Linux is a better operating system over windows. I do wish it had more external support like you mentioned. For instance I got a new Corsair mouse and some of the features I cannot use because I cannot install icue.
Adobe works on Linux. It is just hard to install it because it's a bad program (good for use but bad for users) All of you need works on Linux if you have a bottle well made. The simple problem with Linux is when you want really use a Windows program, it's a little bit hard. For the rest, Linux is simple better far better on all points. Games run better too with more stability and more performance except few ones.

As long as you don’t have a smooth experience with no problems with the stuff most people want to use on and with a computer(printers/mouses/certain programms/etc) Linux will not be a valid alternative for most people who are not that tech savvy

On Windows, you have to install the drivers, on Linux most of them are integrated and functional. Scanners work instantly on Linux... On Windows, you need a program compatible with the scanner. Mice? I haven't heard of a problem with a mouse in a long time. In my day-to-day work, I see people having problems with Windows. That's because people like you, who don't really know what Linux is, criticize and scare people. You make people believe that Windows is only what works on a PC, when it's not. Linux Mint or Ubuntu are much better optimized for novices than Windows. If you're an expert, then there's no limit. I'm surprised, I was not familiar with that card so I had to look it up. I've seen older cards work so I'm surprised it did not work well with that one.
This means you will voluntarily install a kernel module rootkit binary blob for pretty much every game that has multiplayer, anything else is the death of multiplayer gaming due to profuse cheating. OSS purists and the core userbase will be pushed out by gamers, because that's where the money is. Gamers want their games to seamlessly work, not listen to you list your principles like a vegan. If you really want this to become the norm, then fine, more options are always good.
oof, another dreamer.... well here why it will never happen. linux just doesn't have a stable enough graphic pipeline on the long term to handle any serious graphic developement. just look how x11 or wayland is a mess. windows works on the long term while linux any package can be depreciated in a heart beat.this is why android has its own graphic pipeline by the way.
Yeah, one can dream. I guess my point is if enough people are on Linux we would get native driver support. No developers or manufacturers want to support Linux cus it's not a big enough user base to make it worth their while. According to proton db 60% of games work on Linux. As for software I'd say it's about 20%-30% work but there are a lot of alternatives. I will say my biggest pain point is peripherals. They just don't support Linux since their native software like ique, synapse, ghub. That and a few games are keeping me from deleting my windows drive.
I've been exploring Linux at the beginning of the year because I heard Steam Deck is Linux based why Valve doesn't just make their own distribution is BEYOND ME it's not that hard and they can enable donation services so people can get off Windows I am not risking HoloISO as a steam-machine there's better distros for that. Linux is picking up the paste while Windows still relies on End of Life when they could just be like Linux and keep it running through donations Linux has no harsh upgrade requirements which will be the downfall of Microsoft. If Microsoft doesn't want to dismiss the TPM 2.0 mandate and go back to old Microsoft it's time to ban Microsoft for not listening to their customers which will give them a bad name and reputation Microsoft has been KNOWN to making things simple but I've noticed with their new "modern" gimmick they've been failing everyone's computers lately costing people trillions of dollars all for the sake of some stupid TPM 2.0 requirement but yet Linux is SOMEHOW being more secure WITHOUT the use of TPM 2.0 which tells me Windows is now a scam service for the pathetic.
I agree 100% Microsoft will not make it with the way they are going with Windows. I do hope that Valve releases the desktop/laptop version of SteamOS. I think the best thing for the desktop right now is Bazzite. I peronally jump between Bazzite and Archcraft on BSPWM. I enjoying using WindowManagers more then the stardard desktop environment.
I personally have been using Linux as a daily driver for majority of my gaming for well over 3 years now. And it's been great, apart from select games that refuse to enable anti cheat cheat support, but those are easily ignored or replaced with a alternative.
if someone find a way to protect linux from cheaters like signed kernel, then yes, otherwise it will lack in that area when games with anticheat will ban linux gamers
Anticheats arent working anyway. All thay do is collecting personal data. Easyanticheat is terrible garbage. However if you feel like you are protected from cheaters while installing uselles harmfull software on your pc. Than you have bigger problems than cheaters for sure
If you want to make linux better for gaming then buy a steam deck. The more linux gaming devices there are the better game makers optimize their games for linux and better driver support from hardware manufacturers. I tried to play games on linux and each game I wanted to play had blocker level issues. Will wait when new AAA games be working on linux from day 1 with no problems and all key hardware features are supported with no issues (DLSS, VRR, RTX, HDR ...). Ping me when this will happen.
Yeah I have a steam deck and I love it. I agree, the steam deck is a big factor in this becoming the norm. If they start selling steam computers that would be even better! But in order for us to get to the point where everything just works on day one we need a larger audience already on Linux so companies feel the need to support it and not say oh not enough people use that so let's not use our resources there.
Linux will never be the norm. It's been at 2% for a looong time, then up to 4% only recently because of steam deck. People complain about win 11 now, just like they did with Vista and 8. If people are absolutely desperate, they will just jump to using overpriced macbooks instead of window$. Lack of hardware and software support and (on average) worse gaming performance don't help the case for linux either

Switched from windows 10 to mint recently because of the amount of bloatware and the fact that they made it so hard to remove edge(it keeps on running in the background for some reason).
Switched to Linux very recently, and I have no regrets. I actually enjoy using my computer much more now :)

it doesn't need to be better to be worth it. it isn't better right now, anti-cheat but more important to me, modding just isn't as easily supported. Unity Mod Manager for instance just doesn't work, and figuring out how to do it manually is not something that is documented because they expect the tool to work.

Modding steam games is pretty much the same in the majority of the games.
Win 11 is a terrible product and I refuse to use that spyware machine. Linux will definitely be my daily driver after Win 10 reaches EOL, sometime before 2026. Corporations suck and their products should not be the mainstream pick when free and open source alternatives like Linux exist.

The forced TPM 2.0 requirements is what kills me where is the proof TPM 2.0 is more secure I have a motherboard with no TPM what so ever can game on Steam without remaining secure on a scam service either Microsoft goes back to the old route or we will all boycott Microsoft and have them file bankruptcy the customer has the power not the corporation.
One thing i wanna suggest tho is, get acquainted with Linux in the meantime, I've been messing around with linux since 2015, finally jumped ship in April last year after windows screwed me over and never looked back. Been running Debian since, only started dual booting it with Mint since the past weekend and yeah I'm really happy. I wouldn't have been able to jump at a moment's notice if i didn't mess around prior to it. Best of luck ✌️
Why wait? You can get started with a dual boot or even just a virtual machine to start messing around with it today! Another good suggestion I've read is to start switching to open source alternatives to the programs you use, so when it comes time to finally switch, you're not learning a new OS and new apps at the same time.
With MS going full in on AI and the spyware and security threats they will be, there's been a huge uptick in Linux as an alternative videos out there which is great. Add in what Valve has done with Proton along with the WINE team efforts, there is little reason why any studio would not include Linux support other than corporate affiliations. I would like to see Lutris improve game support for new releases.

I have purchased a new PC and as someone who doesn't want to touch win11 with a 10ft barge pole I will be putting linux on it and probably surprising a lot of people by being able to play games on it if conversations I've had are anything to go by. Already have linux on my laptop and had no problems.

One question regarding that: did it come with a windows license? If so, did you do that on purpose? No offense here but people also need to acknowledge, that we should stop buying PCs with pre installed and licensed Windows. Not only those come with bloatware but we throw money into Microsofts big mouth. Why should they stop doing such nasty stuff like "Recall" then? Why, if Windows is "sold" that much, should big publishers care about other OSes? This decision when buying a new PC must become way more concious then it is today.

@@Nightwulf1269 I got one with my laptop as I intended to dual boot it at first but then I never actually loaded it again once I put linux on so I just got rid of it. For the PC I skipped the windows licence, £100 saved.
@@Person01234 great, thank you sharing that. My experience is, that for most people it's just a question of courage to just try it. When they do, they never look back. I mean, there are some special needs which make it fairly difficult. E.g. if you're into music creation, there are lot's of programs which have no real twin in the linux world and do not support the hardware connectivity though they are basically running under linux. But without that hardware support they render useless. But that are rare exceptions. For the majoriy it's just about doing it.

I made the jump 6 months ago and I haven't had a single regret. Started out with Pop!_OS and then made the switch to Arch. With everything happening in the world and the constant integration of AI into everything at an OS level, I feel it's safer to educate ourselves and get away from Big Brother and Big Tech. Gaming on Linux is one step into a better future.
💯!! I completely agree. I still have windows installed on my other drive for some work stuff and a couple games but I stripped every Microsoft related thing from it. Linux is the way to go! The more people we can get using it the better support and compatibility we will get as well!

That would be amazing! My biggest issue right now is support for peripherals. For example I can't use certain features on my Corsair mouse because I can't use ique software. And non of my SIM racing equipment is compatible with Linux. I'm working on trying to create a system/workflow that in corporates both with our losing functionality. Have tried gpu passthrough with vfio/kvm/qemu only for running games in Windows VM seamlessly and near native speed? Also there's something called "looking glass" for kvm.
I have never used any of these technologies and I am wondering how well they work.
I have used GPU passthrough before. Once it's set up it's fairly seamless but setting up GPU passthrough properly can be a little bit of a task and I suggest having a dedicated GPU separate from the main one that is running your Linux environment.

After not seeing any compelling reason to move off Windows in decades, Microsoft has finally put down the last straw for me and once they stop supporting Win 10, I’ll only use a pirated copy of Win 11 in a VM when absolutely necessary.
If MS has finally pushed me off Windows, I know there will be many others as I really, really didn’t want to spend the time learning a new OS just to do what I already can.
But it’s at that point for me and I see an unprecedented number of others showing the same sentiment

And before the main issue was a lack of polished software options, drivers, things that add to the curve.
Now hardware drivers are not much of an issue and while the software won’t be apples to apples till a lot more people move over, it’s workable now.

Question? How does gpu works on linux, i mean can i use for example adrealine driver and 7900xtx or might be issues. I know older and more popular hardware is easier to run but i need to know cause no one gives clear answer. Also is there really that bad stutter in some games especially titles with DirectX engines?
So AMD drivers are already built into Linux distributions. You won't have any issues with a 7900xtx. On my laptop I have a 7600m xt and it runs perfectly without any additional set up. I have never experienced any stuttering. I used to on my desktop but that was on my Nvidia 4060 on Wayland before official support came. It really works no differently from Windows except you don't need a program to install drivers. You just either have them baked in if you have and or you can install Nvidia drivers through most software centers or the terminal.

My Radeon RX7600XT likes Linux very much and AMD is all over the FOSS filosophy... so the amdgpu drivers is included in the kernel by default:.. no need to install any GPU drivers at all... Linux rocks... :-)

Microsoft filed a lawsuit and the developers of linspire quickly disbanded. You can still get somewhat of a remnant of a known as "freespire" now

Yeah Linux definitely still has a ways to go but most of the issues nowadays are just compatibility issues. Otherswise it's a rock solid experience for normal everyday computing.
Fedora 40 some of the steam games not launching for me have tried different proton version but no luck. How do I troubleshoot this further. Is there any logs will store for games not launching
do you know about protondb? it's a website where users can list details about what proton version & steam launch options they use to get a given game to work on their PC. You'll find it useful if you don't know about it already
Yeah I would def check protondb to see the compatibility for the game. I would say you need to google each game individually and apply the proton version that works best. Typilcally I just use ProtonGE and it just works. But I am not sure which games you are trying to run. I only play a handful of games currently

@Silverblue-se6iy most of them not worked. Still testing and trying on different distro as well. Witcher 3 was worked after latest nvidia 555 July released version on KDE same nvidia version crashed my os on Gnome version.
I switched to Linux Mint from Windows about a month ago and haven't looked back. I only have to get on Windows (I did dual boot just in case) when my nephew wants to play XDefiant, but that is about it. I was glad that some anti-cheat stuff works, like Helldivers 2 and Elden Ring work perfectly fine for me. And was glad that MMOs work out of the box as well, like ESO, EQ, LoTRO and DDO. I play so many games, and aside from XDefiant, they all work beautifully. Couple simple tweaks here and there, but thanks to ProtonDB it couldn't be easier for the most part.
Yeah I agree! It's getting better and better every day! I think I saw some people get Xdefiant working on the steam deck It might be worth a shot taking a look at one of those tutorials! Then you won't need your windows at all!

i tried linux mint and gaming was super laggy, at least in cs2, like 200 fps less and drops, returned to windows that same day, i tried to like linux but it seems that is not for me.
I agree it's not for everyone. Just like Mac OS is not a bad system but it's not for me. I don't play cs2 so I can't give you much feedback there but I am able to run the finals, overwatch, and pretty much any single player game with no stutters and good fps. The only thing I still need my windows install for is COD and Sim racing.
I really want to move linux, but for some software and games didnt run like r6s so yeah i'm still not thinking for using linux and btw i'm using laptop software like msi ai for controlling my battery laptop, i hope can move to linux

Way ahead of ya mate, Bazzite as a daily driver on my desktop and of course steamos on my steam deck. Hoping Nvidia continues to get more Linux support so more people can jump in with less hassle. I had a few issues with gamescope and the RX7900XT but given time those issues were fixed.

Currently installed it on my old laptop recently. (might try to run those linux sh I got from my GOG game purchases, but mainly my desktop is my main gaming machine)

Done. Running ArchLinux. I got so tired with Windows and Microsoft schenigans. And finally HDR more or less works with Plasma so out good excuses. Everything seems to work just fine out of the box (intel 12900k, Aorus Z690 PRO / Radeon 7900 XTX). I was a bit worried on how Baldur's Gate 3 runs. But luckily no issues so far! And also Stellaris, Crusader Kings 3 and other Paradox titles seem to work just fine.
Well. there was one issue. YNAB 4 crashes all the time with Wine with my huge-ass-multi-year-ledger. So therefor decided to learn how GnuCash works and it seems to do the job just fine.

Have to say that Arch (or linux kernel) has changed a lot in 10 years. Last time I had to configure and setup all kind of modules to get the system working. Now everything is OK from out-of-the-box. Makes ArchLinux installation so much more easier as no need to configure Xorg-settings or fight with the audio. Great stuff!
Not going to lie, there are times that I think such videos are a propaganda for people to hate on Windows. (Not referring to your video but to others that tells people to switch to Linux and etc.) However, I have made the switch to Fedora 40 last Sunday and since I know what I am doing I got everything set-up without any problems.
I can do basic tasks, game, emulate, code and chill. (I am no content creator but I can also stream and edit pictures/videos.) I am actually enjoying it and if nothing goes wrong I may just stick to it. So far, I am having the same experience as I would on Windows. (Based on my use case of the operating system.)
Even though I like the UI style of Windows 11 and how everything works out of the box, I have made the switch because of "Co-Pilot" and because of "Recall" I know that re-call isn't available yet but I do care about my privacy so that's what "motivated" me I guess. I could be wrong but I'd say even right clicking is faster than on Windows 11.
Yeah I have seen a few of those videos. I still use windows for certain things I don't dislike the operating system itself I mainly don't like the direction they are going and all of the Microsoft apps. I'm glad you made the switch! Welcome!
I do think most tasks are just faster on Linux, Less ram usage as well. I love that I can make everything a macro. I like using window managers too and mapping everything to the keyboard for a really nice productive environment.

I was a lifelong Windows user, I paid for the product and I was honestly disappointed with the way Microsoft treats its customers. The ads and the telemetry are inexcusable, I'd fully understand if these were featured in a free windows copy that you wouldn't have to pay for, like Google does with its services. But no, Microsoft has the audacity to demand stupid amount of money for a bloated adware some dare to call OS.
Anyway, I'm a Windows 11 refugee, I switched to Mint about a month ago and never looked back :D

The amazing thing is that Linux is the best way to play retro windows games. I love playing Shogu, I had to do a lot of tweaking to run on windows (due to glide api) on Linux it worked out of the box with Heroic. I was impressed

90% of my steam library seems to work fine, i don't really play that 10% of games anyways. it's mostly stuff that was either free or like 50 cents, and some ubisoft/ea games i'll never play again.

If Vsync gets more polished on Linux I'd switch, (Vsync and fps goes haywire in other apps when I have a game running), I don't even mind a few games that don't work.

I ditched Windows 11 and then went to Bazzite Linux. I use it as my daily and has not impeded my PC usage at all. All my other PCS I have around my house are running zorin or Linux mint. My wife is the only one that has a Windows 11 PC still.
Awesome!! I downloaded bazzite on my wife's computer. It's actually a good distro for people who casually use their computer. Minimizes them messing anything up with it being immutable. I personally bounce back and forth between Bazzite and Archcraft.

@@TheBlackDon Because Linux Mint was VERY finicky on my gaming PC (controllers not working, audio was insistently crackling, Steam Proton not working, it couldn't even restart properly)
(It is also worth noting all of this was on an RX 6650 XT, and AMD is reportedly more Linux friendly than nVidia)

Yeah, I understand. I can't fully get rid of windows myself. There are some things that I still need it for.
The Microsoft OS was designed for developers and users to create and run software from an interface. It also took care of file management but generally left all control over the PC to the user. Nowadays the Windows platform wants to manage and integrate into every component on the PC. Even now they are working with hardware manufactures to make PC components Microsoft compliant through things like secure boot and hardware TPM. It should be obvious to anyone that Microsoft are attempting to push out their competition, or at the very least control the distribution of Non Microsoft resources. It's not there yet but they are taking more ground every day and I for one see where it's heading. Only through a drastic and immediate shift in OS popularity will these hardware manufacturers reconsider how much influence Microsoft should have.
This is so true. I see the direction they are going and I really don't want to let it happen. If more people start using Linux manufacturers will have to adjust. I was just saying on another post that I can't wait till I walk into a best buy and see a whole Linux section! I may be dreaming here but we need to make it happen.

I'm a big GoG user, alas lot of games are still working on windows. Hopefully Valve is doing more and more work to help portability of games, I just wish DRM-free games from GoG would all work.
You can run GoG and its games through WINE or Lutris though
To @dranon0o point I guess it just needs to be easier where you don't have to run games through a certain platform for it to work they should just work from where you got the game from. But I guess that's the point of the video. If we all just use Linux we will force the devs and companies to just make everything work with Linux.
I love GoG too. But I very much disagree with you here. The reason for my disagreement is API rot on Linux. Linux has no solid gaming API and all software on here relies on package maintainers maintaining the ever changing landscape in linux and recompiling/distibuting. Now in Gaming land on Windows, Devs ship a game and most of the time it remains immutable binary with no updates (or just updates at the start and that is it). This is why native linux games work in the initial years, then API rot sets in on linux side, and all of a sudden your games don't run any more and the game devs will never ever update it.
But with windows APIs, these APIs are backwards compatible at binary level pretty much for all time.
So Wine with Windows games is our very best shot at game preservation. Ain't not game devs got time/money to keep recompiling their native linux binaries and distrobuting them for free. Just does not happen.
So what we have right now with Valve/Proton advancements is a golden age for gaming.
All my GoG games work fine... I run them through Heroic. Some I had to do some searching and a lot of troubleshooting to find the right settings or versions of Wine/Proton to use. Steam makes it easy for Steam, but other companies do not care (yet), so the work gets put on you.
The last problem that i have and motivate me to spent space on my SSD with a dual boot is the games, but, now i try my new laptop without dual boot, install Steam and play Red Dead Redemption 2, and i am surprised with how easy is to play games, i have some trouble with Nvidia driver install because of the Nvidia Optimus, but i ha e solved with an gnome extension that allows to select between integrated/discrete GPUs
Unless you're playing a online game with anti cheat. Most games just work nowadays. If we can get more on more people on Linux devs will have no choice but to enable things for Linux. Thanks for being a Linux user!

Until Linux is shipped with Laptops from the store, it will never become main stream for anything.

Unfortunately, under Linux it's still a lot of tinkering until a game runs. 😅 It's not easy at all in my opinion.
7 out of 10 native games have some issues on distros other than Ubuntu. Libraries missing, fonts missing, shaders can't compile, etc. Wine / Proton runs fine (because it's technically a Windows layer)
I guess it depends on the games you play the ones I play just work. With the exeption of COD and Sim racing I still have to use windows.
Linux has the huge problem of high switch costs compared to Windows. For office work I think Linux is awesome but everything I'd consider being more of a "power user" on Windows who is not very tech savvy will have a lot of issues with Linux. You just have to consider that, to many people, jumping through extra hoops is already a no-no. Like Proton QT for example.
Most people are used to seeing something and it "just works", Linux doesnt provide that due to lacking adoption. Most people arent devs like me, they will get frustrated, they dont wanna search for potential workarounds for 4 hours just to play a simple game or run an emulator. I like Linux Mint but this wont be the year of Linux, neither will next year, especially not for gaming....
Vallid points for sure. I do feel like if games just worked because it was already supported from day one would fix the headache of New linux users coming over. I wish I could be as strong as you lol for me that would be tough cus I enjoy sim racing. Actually most racing titles I play are supported on Linux it's just the sim equipment that's not :/. And my friend group forces me to play COD 😂

I 100% agree with you. The Anti-Cheat system is understandable piece of the environment, but until the game manufacturers get off their lazy collective butts the linux community is suffering. I just recently switched to Linux Mint and I am testing now. I still am dual booting both, but I am finding my PC runs better on Linux and NO added applications that I don't need. I hate that windows is adding ton's of AI spyware and all the telemetry its currently doing behind the scenes. Run Wireshark and you'll be amazed how much slower your internet connection is on WIN because of this. Linux just provides a better experience so far. I do have one thing to say and yes, it was troublesome to get my nvidia card working on Linux so this is keeping a lot of people away from Linux. It is getting better though! I am looking forward to the day I can finally say goodbye to Win 11 ! Spyware junk.
I am looking forward to it too! There are still a few things that I do have to have a windows drive available on my computers. I acatully don't really have any issues with my nvidia drivers on linux. Most if not all the distros I use just seem to work for me. I do have a new card tho so idk if that is the reason why you are experiencing isssues?
@@TheBlackDon no I have a 3050, still just testing to see what works and what doesnt. Having some sound issues but working on it. Most of it is getting used to Linux and getting out of the habit of windows. It's a comfort issue. Mint has been really good though.
Low key. The one thing that’s kinda the most frustrating on Linux is piracy. It feels like you have to go through all these hoops just get it to work and there’s no easy guide on how to do it. While with windows it feels more intuitive

you can use a windows vm to install fitgirls repack for example or other installers that don't work with wine

what usually works for me is adding the game to steam (as a non steam game) and then running it though proton, I'm currently playing Elden Ring like this with no problems.
Usually fitgirl installers run fine with wine, then just find where the game was installed and add to steam.

if games with anticheat actually ran on my Linux system I would mainstream Linux and never go back to windows, but sadly thats not the case... what really really makes me mad is Easy Anticheat already has a Linux SDK but none of the devs will utilize it.

I'm almost OK for linux to remain as is. The reason being if it goes mainstream, there is a risk of corporate takeover and resulting enshitification just like what we see on the daily with Windows land. I like my Pop OS as it is. It's not intrusive, doesn't abuse privacy to my knowledge. Just lets me get on with doing my stuff and playing games too. Remember, we have already had Poettering and his SystemD - and now he is gobbled up by Microsoft as an employee since 2022. Conflict of interest.

My Windirt 11 has died suddenly and has destroyed the EFI-Partition on that SSD so that even my Supergrub-Stick couldn't find a Windirt anymore on that drive. So I installed MX-Linux instead which I had in it's version before in a Dualboot-Szenario on a HDD on the SSD as its actual version with the debian Bookworm Kernel. And since that I work and play almost the same way as before in Windirt 11 and even better and more efficient than ever before. Okay, I have a little experience with Linux and Terminalusage but with that new Derivates like MX you also can do the most tasks without it when you are not familiar with terminalusage but I like it working from time to time with the commandline and I think this is also good in terms of learning stuff for you job-life. So forget about Windows and its data-greedy behavior especially now with Copilot&Recall and the new nonsense of automatically activating Onedrive when installing Windows 11. No more Windows 11 or Versions to come on my private devices and especially not for gaming that works fine and smooth for most of my games. Horrible enough that one has to use that garbage Window-Os in most jobs!
Yeah Linux is really not that hard and a lot of times if you try to use the terminal a quick Google search gets you right where you need to be. Most of the Linux community doesn't mind helping either. I'm glad you made the switch!! I will never go back to daily driving Windows on any of my devices. Thanks for telling your story!! 😎💯
@@TheBlackDon next week i guess are the last parts here and I can update my machine a little bit from a 8 year old Intel-System to a not so old AM4-System with an Ryzen 5 5.600 and guess this will speed up the whole thing a little. Then I will install the new KDE Plasma 6.1 and the actual Gnome so that I can sometimes change my desktop form day to day. That's also a advantage you will never have in Windirt. I'm always glad finding channels like yours with interesting Linuxstuff and it's daily use which demonstrates clearly that windirt isn't necessary any longer and where I can find new infos about Linux. Sorry but Linux still has a massive problem with ease of usability for external hardware it also lacks some critical apps like whole Adobe lineup. Another problem is the obsession of the Linux community with only using foss when there is clearly better proprietary stuff around(Im not hating on open source just there’s just some stuff that has better proprietary versions) and the elitism in general(UsE tHe MaNuAl). There is also the point that your workplace/institution you work at will force you to use stuff that is only available on windows. I also hope for the year of the Linux desktop but unfortunately I think its not there yet
Yeah these are all extremely valid points. I am not one of those enthusiast that only use foss programs. If the proprietary version is better I will use and don't even mind paying for it if it's worth it. Overall tho I do think Linux is a better operating system over windows. I do wish it had more external support like you mentioned. For instance I got a new Corsair mouse and some of the features I cannot use because I cannot install icue.
Adobe works on Linux. It is just hard to install it because it's a bad program (good for use but bad for users) All of you need works on Linux if you have a bottle well made. The simple problem with Linux is when you want really use a Windows program, it's a little bit hard. For the rest, Linux is simple better far better on all points. Games run better too with more stability and more performance except few ones.

As long as you don’t have a smooth experience with no problems with the stuff most people want to use on and with a computer(printers/mouses/certain programms/etc) Linux will not be a valid alternative for most people who are not that tech savvy
@@yonko5220 I've been using Windows for over 30 years, and I'm still using it in the corporate world, and I can see how difficult it is to use Windows compared with Linux for 90% of things. Printers? On Windows, you have to install the drivers, on Linux most of them are integrated and functional. Scanners work instantly on Linux... On Windows, you need a program compatible with the scanner. Mice? I haven't heard of a problem with a mouse in a long time. In my day-to-day work, I see people having problems with Windows. That's because people like you, who don't really know what Linux is, criticize and scare people. You make people believe that Windows is only what works on a PC, when it's not. Linux Mint or Ubuntu are much better optimized for novices than Windows. If you're an expert, then there's no limit.
Oh, and one last thing: the lifespan of a PC isn't 2 years like it is with Windows. Linux lets you use a PC with the same experience and no degradation for years and years.

I'm surprised, I was not familiar with that card so I had to look it up. I've seen older cards work so I'm surprised it did not work well with that one.
This means you will voluntarily install a kernel module rootkit binary blob for pretty much every game that has multiplayer, anything else is the death of multiplayer gaming due to profuse cheating. OSS purists and the core userbase will be pushed out by gamers, because that's where the money is. Gamers want their games to seamlessly work, not listen to you list your principles like a vegan. If you really want this to become the norm, then fine, more options are always good.

oof, another dreamer.... well here why it will never happen. linux just doesn't have a stable enough graphic pipeline on the long term to handle any serious graphic developement. just look how x11 or wayland is a mess. windows works on the long term while linux any package can be depreciated in a heart beat.this is why android has its own graphic pipeline by the way.
Yeah, one can dream. I guess my point is if enough people are on Linux we would get native driver support. No developers or manufacturers want to support Linux cus it's not a big enough user base to make it worth their while. If all Linux user could just get 1 or 2 more people up switch over it would make a difference. Maybe not a big enough one but a big start.

Pretty much everyone want to do what they want and unless a big company step in to focus the development.it won't happen.glad valve is helping on that side. They made their own compositor and their own hdr implementation while Nvidia is pushing explicit sync. So if Linux succeed,it will be again a corporate os.

90% of software and games don’t work on Linux
According to proton db 60% of games work on Linux. As for software I'd say it's about 20%-30% work but there are a lot of alternatives. I will say my biggest pain point is peripherals. They just don't support Linux since their native software like ique, synapse, ghub. That and a few games are keeping me from deleting my windows drive.
I've been exploring Linux at the beginning of the year because I heard Steam Deck is Linux based why Valve doesn't just make their own distribution is BEYOND ME it's not that hard and they can enable donation services so people can get off Windows I am not risking HoloISO as a steam-machine there's better distros for that. Linux is picking up the paste while Windows still relies on End of Life when they could just be like Linux and keep it running through donations Linux has no harsh upgrade requirements which will be the downfall of Microsoft. If Microsoft doesn't want to dismiss the TPM 2.0 mandate and go back to old Microsoft it's time to ban Microsoft for not listening to their customers which will give them a bad name and reputation Microsoft has been KNOWN to making things simple but I've noticed with their new "modern" gimmick they've been failing everyone's computers lately costing people trillions of dollars all for the sake of some stupid TPM 2.0 requirement but yet Linux is SOMEHOW being more secure WITHOUT the use of TPM 2.0 which tells me Windows is now a scam service for the pathetic.
I agree 100% Microsoft will not make it with the way they are going with Windows. I do hope that Valve releases the desktop/laptop version of SteamOS. I think the best thing for the desktop right now is Bazzite. I peronally jump between Bazzite and Archcraft on BSPWM. I enjoying using WindowManagers more then the stardard desktop environment.
I personally have been using Linux as a daily driver for majority of my gaming for well over 3 years now.
And it's been great, apart from select games that refuse to enable anti cheat cheat support, but those are easily ignored or replaced with a alternative.

Yeah that's the biggest pain point is the anti cheat support. There will always be cheaters just need to minimize it as much as possible.
Anticheats arent working anyway. All thay do is collecting personal data. Easyanticheat is terrible garbage. However if you feel like you are protected from cheaters while installing uselles harmfull software on your pc. Than you have bigger problems than cheaters for sure

If you want to make linux better for gaming then buy a steam deck. The more linux gaming devices there are the better game makers optimize their games for linux and better driver support from hardware manufacturers. I tried to play games on linux and each game I wanted to play had blocker level issues. Will wait when new AAA games be working on linux from day 1 with no problems and all key hardware features are supported with no issues (DLSS, VRR, RTX, HDR ...). Ping me when this will happen.
Yeah I have a steam deck and I love it. I agree, the steam deck is a big factor in this becoming the norm. If they start selling steam computers that would be even better! But in order for us to get to the point where everything just works on day one we need a larger audience already on Linux so companies feel the need to support it and not say oh not enough people use that so let's not use our resources there.

Linux will never be the norm. It's been at 2% for a looong time, then up to 4% only recently because of steam deck. People complain about win 11 now, just like they did with Vista and 8. If people are absolutely desperate, they will just jump to using overpriced macbooks instead of window$. Lack of hardware and software support and (on average) worse gaming performance don't help the case for linux either

Switched from windows 10 to mint recently because of the amount of bloatware and the fact that they made it so hard to remove edge(it keeps on running in the background for some reason).
