Usually the lost luggage in US will be open, for the security, so any valuable just pack in carry-on. I travel over 200 days international and US demestic. They ALWAYS open lost suitcases, most of the time just for safety. But my college had her Apple laptop lost bc of it. If I have lots valuable I will pack another backpack plus my carry-on suitcase.
Omg this same thing happened to me except with ice hockey sticks. I flew to Canada for a tournament. My game was in less than a day and they forgot my sticks in the US. I was freaking out because I couldn’t play without the sticks. They came at 12 at night. I was so happy the next day.
You know that convenience includes coming over to the airport? They can ship it to her house but it would be a longer process than coming over to the airport. So she chose the best option for her. 😊.
This actually happened to me when I was coming back from living in Japan for half a year. I had two big suitcases and a duffel bag that were left behind in the Tokyo airport due to a flight delay that caused us to have to RUN through the airport to get to our next flight (which was a different airline than our first flight so the bags weren’t transferred over, we would have had to pick them up and check them again, which we didn’t have time for). So they were technically “lost” but I knew where they were. I got back to the states and filed for my lost luggage to be sent to me at my home address. I got them back within a week or so, and didn’t have to pay any luggage fees. I was really worried about the luggage fees transferring over to the other airline since it would have been around 300USD for the fees. Got waived because I chose to get home over my luggage lol. (I wasn’t too worried about my luggage because I had an AirTag in each bag that showed the exact location of each bag) Guess that’s a way you can get out of baggage fees. 🤷♂️
I used to work for the airlines at IAD at the baggage claim office. The baggage coming from the overseas flights were always a exciting moment because people s belongings were more times than not getting rerouted. Unfortunately 😢
nah because this happened to me when i went to the us in may. i was using united airlines and one of my luggage was on the next flight to newark new jersey. the flight was leaving that night but they said they would ship it us the next day.

Baggage can get lost. That’s why I would not put expensive things on a checked bag. I would put them on a backpack or carry on bag. If it doesn’t fit carry on, don’t buy it.
I have arrived back in one of my hometowns after 14 years from leaving when I was 4 in Italy just over a week ago. Swiss air told me my luggage got delayed through an email. I didnt fill out the form online as I was already at baggage claim office and i was using someone elses data and bless them for actually helping, her luggage was also delayed along with mine and another like 13 of us. Im glad you ended up getting yours, my luggage is similar haha!
The reason it may have been opened is because CBP has to check some of the bags the come from international travel. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip and hope everything went well!
