  • I put together a compilation of my Instagram posts for anyone that does not follow me on Instagram at millstaps_jimiisms. These are clips from a two week span when I had the pleasure of playing an original 1970 Uni-Vibe owned by my friend Nico of Sabbius Custom Shop Effects. In the first one, I had the fuzz cranked just for fun. It needs a little less distortion and more cranked amp to get the true Trower sound. In the second one, you can hear clearly how it works on a clean guitar in Jungle. The third snippet is me jamming over SRV and being too lazy to turn off the stereo.
    All were done using my new Sunburst Partscaster with Q-Pickups from Croatia. That guitar turned out so well. My effects chain is in order: 1970 Uni-Vibe, Sabbadius Rainbow (Maui) fuzz, Detrick_FX wah-wah, Fulltone Supa-Trem (preamp only), Fulltone OCD v1.4, Framptone 3 Banger splitter box into a vintage 1963 Fender reverb then to a 1960 Tweed Bassman, and the other channel going to a 1964 Super Reverb to fill out the room sound.

      Sitting here playing, I'm somewhat oblivious to the actual value posting these videos adds to the Jimiverse. Then I get your kind comments and realize that they do add a little value. I guess the cool part is that I grew up listening to Jimi and Robin when they first burst onto the scene. Now I realize how much influence they had on my playing as a kid. I was playing blues for years and years and then after that fateful day when I posted a Jimi tone/Bassman video, I realized that I've always had the passion to play the harder rock stuff so I ditched the blues and played from my heart. Now I'm satisfied. Don't fight the true you.

      The one thing that seems to be missing in ALL of the modern clones is the spatial phase shift the original does to the signal. They all use the same circuit so there must be some aspect of the original circuit that everyone can’t duplicate exactly. It could be the fact that a lot of the original components are not available today. I just acquired an original early ‘70’s Uni-Vibe. I’ll probably post a few more videos with it.

      Yes, when I was listening to Robin, I realized he may have had more of an influence on my playing than I realized. He was definitely what we thought of as a Jimi prodigy back in the day. I was lucky enough to find a bunch of Trower CD's in a case that my friend sent me a few years ago full of all kinds of Hendrix CD's, some still unopened.

      @@millstapTrower, to me, is a British-flavoured Jimi Hendrix offshoot. Clearly the tone and blues-inspired licks are there, but the crazy showmanship and psychedelia isn't his focus; it's much more buttoned up and neat. I never really got _big_ into him, but Bridge of Sighs is a fantastic album filled with great jammable tracks. I always liked Too Rolling Stoned for its lengthy ending jam that just vamps on one bass note.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 місяців тому +2

      @@ColinBrain I have that album but I haven't listened to all of it yet. I will. Yes, the British are all uptight and proper by nature. I kind of laughed when I saw Jeff Beck say that Jimi was doing everything that he wanted to do but he couldn't because he was held back basically by their proper, stiff upper lip culture. That's a great excuse anyway. Remember when the old farts tried to shut down the Beatles when they were playing on the roof. That tells you everything. I just wish I could go back in time and watch the audience when everyone had come to see Jimi, including the Beatles, do his thing. America rules baby! But, I'm pretty sure Jimi couldn't have gotten away with it in America at the time either. It was pure destiny that he ended up with the British counter culture. They let him do his thing, thank God.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  4 місяці тому +1

      Good to see you back again. A squeak should be easy to fix. I would think lube would help. I had one that was a tiny bit squeaky lately and I sprayed a silicone lube underneath the treadle. Try spraying the tension bracket area. It depends on what type it is. A lot have a bar that goes over the top of the shaft. Try that area. You probably already did that though. Make sure the plastic clutch that holds the rack gear against the pinion gear is greased a little. The sprays can get into hard-to-get places like the treadle shaft and tensioner. Sometimes wahs can get microphonic and amplify the squeak.

    Hi Millstap!
    I have a Bassman 59 reissue and I can't seem to get rid of that incisive ice pick sound when I crank it. I like to run presence at 6, mids at 9, bass at 4 and treble at 5. I'm looking for clear tones that saturate nicely without getting the sound all muffled up or boomy. I've tried blending channels but I would much rather use the bright channel on its own since it gives me more clarity. I just can't seem to retain that glassy tone without sacrificing upper frequencies. Let me know your thoughts. Fantastic playing by the way! as usual 😀

    • @millstap
      @millstap  3 місяці тому

      For starters, I don't think the Bassman is known for its glassy tone. That's where the blackface circuit circa. SRV shines. Unfortunately, Fender designed the Reissue based on components available today. Where the original used a 12AY7 in V1, the Reissue uses a 12AX7. That jumps the gain from 40% to a whopping 100%. Blending the channels, as you have heard, makes the gain even higher so it's pretty crunchy. Yes, stick with the Bright channel and try maybe a 5751 in V1 which has a 70% gain factor. I'm not sure the 12AY7 is compatible with the Reissue circuit but it's certainly worth a try. I always used 6072's which are low noise 12AY7's. It's very difficult to find NOS 12AY7's that are not microphonic. Once you lower the gain, you're closer to the original sound and then you can crank it a little more and get more power tube distortion which sounds much better. Plus, I only use NOS Tungsol 5881's. You might want to try the Reissue 5881. Even with these changes, the glass probably won't be there but for me, the more clean headroom I can get, the better all of my effects sound. You need a nice, clean, high headroom foundation with lots of bass which makes the Bassman the perfect choice. It was the most powerful amp of its day and that is why it became the Holy Grail amp for guitars. Everything evolved from that 5F6-A circuit. A great combination of amps is a Bassman with a Vibroverb or Super Reverb to bring in the glass of the blackface circuit. Those amps blend together very well.

    • @dhs4726
      @dhs4726 3 місяці тому

      @@dhs4726 Tubes do make quite a difference. Which ones are in it now? I was alway obsessed (years ago) with New Old Stock tubes and I can't imagine how much money I spent and wasted too. But, I did find some great sounding tubes and RCA's usually were at the top of the heap. I have never taken the plunge of trying current production tubes so I'm not familiar with them even though I am eventually going to have to find the best sounding new tubes. They just don't make them like they used to. Now they don't last near as long as the tubes from the 50's and 60's. The NOS Tungsols are still readily available and at a decent price but I've heard good things about the new reproduction 5881's.

      @dhs4726 3 місяці тому

      @@millstap I've never biased the power tubes myself, but last time I got them checked it was 26ma per tube. My main issue is not being able to get more of the higher frequencies without that shrill ice pick sound, I've been going at it for months but still haven't succeeded. I'm using JJ Electronic ECC83S/12AX7 tubes, I think I'll be looking for some other options soon

      I'm looking for a good one in original condition. I may never find one at a decent price. That pedal was an eye opener on the secret to Jimi's sound. Anytime it was in his pedal chain, it was on and boosting his signal in a glorious way.

      @@millstap actually I was thinking about them last year....they have new ones but no foot pedal, wish I still had it, along with the 3 Blackface Fenders...Twin, Super and Tremolux...owned them all at the same time, very different sounding but all very Fender....Fender Heaven...👍

      @@HerringboneRecords Yes, after playing a real one, I realized the newer clones don't quite cut it. There is something magic in that circuit that is hard to pinpoint. I assume they can't get the correct components anymore, especially the bulbs and photocells, and the result is less than what the originals were.

      @@HerringboneRecords I know. I'm watching most of them. But, when you ask them if the bulb and photocells are original, they don't answer and the only way you would know is to take the cover off which they never do. I know one of them states it has been refurbished with a new bulb and photocells. That kills the vibe in my opinion. Some have new transformers. Everyone agrees to change the large electrolytic capacitors but even those could still be good. I have a 1959 Sprague Tel-Ohmike TO-5 which can test those caps for leakage up to a 600VDC rating. I would leave them in if they test good. You really have to test play each one because some of the later ones even when new, didn't sound as good as the late 60's models. Also, I think Leon Hendrix is trying to sell one for $25,000 supposedly owned by Jimi but some have already said it is a model after Jimi died so he couldn't have possibly owned or played it.

    Can you make a gear video about this tone?

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 місяців тому +1

      Well, I can, but it won't include the Uni-Vibe. I'll try to do something simple in the near future. It's pretty basic. The vibe, a fuzz, a wah-wah, a preamp boost, and an overdrive into the 1960 Bassman, in that order. I do run a vintage 1963 Fender reverb unit right before the Bassman.

      I'm going to try to replicate that tone! I found it simply perfect! I have the Funky Vibe '68 (Sabbadius), Fuzz Face made by Marks Amps (brazilian made), Clyde McCoy Wah, Klon (to sound likecranked amp), a '63 reissue reverb unit, and a reissue 59' Bassman.

      @@mauriciobiasottimiguel1360 The Bassman is always on 3-1/2 volume. I might do a video soon on the importance of the guitar cable and how it is also a tone changer in the chain of effects. I'll throw in the rig rundown too.
