I believe that we really do play from the soul, so who you are as a person will always come through in your playing. This is why I believe that I have been unsuccessful in my playing, I've got no personality 😂
That was a good one😂
I’ll have to watch this again next week when it’s my birthday. The thing I liked about when you soloed on Happy Birthday was that you threw in hooks that kept us knowing where you were in the “form” from time to time. Sometimes I play with guys that blow over the tune and never clue you in at any spot. Yes, I keep the form going in my head while I’m playing/comping but sometimes I think “wait, is he with us? I’m with the bassist but is he with us?”. Keying people in helps them help you formulate your ideas. All this is my opinion obviously, well except the part about it being my birthday next week. Merry Christmas Quincy! FP
Happy New Year Frankie!
It really is my birthday today 🤘🤘thanks Q for the inspiration and for singing !! 🙌🥁🙂
Happy birthday EP! Happy bday and happy holidays🎉🎁
What a cool drum lesson! Thank you Mr. Quincy Davis
My pleasure!
Hello Q!
Great lesson! I for sure sang that triplet etude with you!
It reminds me of the D.R.O.P method of Mark Guiliana (Dynamic, Rate, Orchestration and Phrasing) with added nuances!
Happy holidays!
Love Mark's book. Good call Joel. Happy New Year to you my friend!
@@drumqtips Happy New Year to you and all your community too!!!!
Thank you Dr. Q! I was working on Syncopation last night and watching this now realize I am not even scratching the surface in my approach.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You Quincy & Happy Xmas :D
Thank you too!
perfect! reminds me of the new breed exercises :)
That's a great one!
I thought the same. Very cool lesson!
Fantastic lesson! Loved this. Elvin also emphasised singing, as did Purdy of course. Meanwhile, dynamics, accents, textures, enhanced notes, groove and orchestration -- as you describe and demonstrate -- are the essence of musicality. Well done.
I appreciate that Chucky! And Happy New Year to you my man!
Joyeux Noel Quincy!
Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you too!
Really lovely ideas and examples, thank you!
You are so welcome Joey!
Very cool advice thank you Quincy !
My pleasure!
Yessir Q - love it man

Thank you for all the awesome content through the year! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!🥳🎄🥂
My pleasure! Happy holidays to you friend.
The secret to musical drumming is DAT EGO. Got it.
So you’re saying I have an ego? Cool
Those darn sticks!😂 Enjoy a wonderful Christmas, Quincy!
Happy holidays T Carr! Talked to the sticks after shooting the video. They'll behave next vid:)
LOL!!!@@drumqtips
Fantastic
Thank you and cheers!
Fantastic simple but crucial lesson. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very good tutorial in playing musical. I like your point in being creative but staying in the context of what is written.
Glad you liked it Vic!
Merry Christmas to you. Thanks for all the great vids this year, they’re always appreciated, and always motivating. Happy new year as well!
Glad you're enjoying my videos. Happy holidays to you!
Thank you for the things you do and free PDF. Merry Christmas and an happy new year...

Superb 👌 Nice Christmas gift🙏 These damn sticks got a mind of their own 😊
You feel my pain with those sticks. Happy holidays brother PE!
To you also merry Christmas and New year Quincy 🎉
Great content as always Quincy. Master Carl Allen stresses the importance of practicing musically, stating that "private practice determines public performance". Your video is a great example of practicing not only towards being a better drummer, but also a better MUSICIAN. God bless you brother!
Uncle Carl's words are so true! Glad you enjoyed and appreciated the video my man. Happy holidays!
This was a great lesson, though I'm really surprised by the sticks' behavior here. Vics aren't usually troublemakers. (It's the Promarks and Vaters you gotta keep an eye on!) 😂
Yeah I had a good talking-to with those damn sticks after the videos. They’ll be better next video🤣🤣
I have troublesome sticks also,Vaters and Promarks.Any tips to make them behave?
I like Stevie Wonders version of Happy Birthday!
Thanks for helping us begin to make music! As Catastrophe9726 said, I also would like to see this applied to a jazz standard. Thanks for showing us some secret sauce!
Noted. Thanks for the feedback. Lookout for a future video going deeper on this topic. Cheers Scottie!
Amazing lesson as always Mr Davis ! Thank you ! Can I use your Rythm Etudes in some videos I'd like to record please ?
Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Go for it! Just give me a shout👊🏾
@@drumqtips Thank you so much ! Yes sure !
Great video and approach to musicality !! The textures part i don't fully comprehend, you are just referring to add cymbals?
Textures can be anything that’s not a conventional single or double stroke on a drum or cymbal. Buzz, scrape, playing on the rims, etc…
@@drumqtips Clear 👍👍
It’s the sticks fault😂
It was!!! 😂😂😂😂
I have a round badge Gretsch kit with a 18” and 20’ bass drum like some of my drum hero’s used and I don’t sound like them!😢 it must be something wrong with the drums!🤬
Man, you calling me out counting stuff off too quickly. How’d you know?! 9:20
I have special powers Joey😜. Happy holidays my man!
